Help Needed to root my Desire S - HTC Desire S

Hi all,
I have just unlocked the bootloader from htcdev.com, the current HBOOT is 2.00002 and i tried using superclickuser after that to root the phone however superclickuser hangs during the rooting process. I also tried unlockroot same problem it says cant gain shellroot access. Can someone suggest to me what else i can use to root my phone with detailed instructions. When i tried clockword rom manager it says my phone isnt rooted? Can some1 help me out, please...
I am tired of waiting for HTC to release the ICS update and want to install a custom rom? any suggestions? cyanogenmod 9 isnt available for the desire s on their website, i am open to other stable fully functional roms.

Hello,
You just got another friend in the same boat.
I am too fed up with HTC & its service and want to root my phone, then backup the stock rom, after that try with Custom ROMs.
So far, I am only able to unlock the bootloader using HTC-dev way (I am HBOOT 2.00.0002)
SuperOneClick steps mentioned in xda is not working, It hangs and Step #7 and never goes past it.
I've checked and found over google that there are many users with 2.3.5 and above where SuperOneClick is not working.
I've also tried unlockroot[dot]com but no positive results...
Can anyone suggest if there is a way to root HTC Desire S 2.3.5 with HBOOT 02.00.0002 (HTC-Dev unlocked), so that I can backup the stock ROM first then go with Custom ROMs... ?
Any help / suggestions will be appreciated. :fingers-crossed:

There is a guide to do just this in the Index thread in the development forum. SuperOneClick won't work because the exploits it uses have been patched in the latest OTA by HTC.
If you don't want to install a custom ROM and just want root, then after you install the custom recovery flash superuser (attached) from it.

You only need to root your phone if you want root access on your current ROM. If you are going to flash a custom ROM, then root is not required. Most custom ROMs also come pre-rooted.
What you need it a custom recovery installed, and that just requires a copy of the recovery image.
I believe that you should be able to download 4EXT Touch Recovery, then flash the recovery.img from fastboot (because your phone is unlocked), then you can use 4EXT to backup your current ROM and flash a new one.
See link for Recovery Updater here:

Thanks a Ton friends... :victory:
I have successfully rooted my HTC Desire S and your explanations were just perfect to teach me and boost my confidence.
I would just re-iterate the steps I have performed to ROOT my HTC Desire S especially for people who will soon start looking for steps after August 31st, since I'm pretty sure HTC will fail once again to deliver ICS updates by their given deadline.
Step. 0
Setup Android Tools folder on your PC (Windows)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1272595
Step. 1
Unlock bootloader using HTC Dev (HBOOT 2.00.0002 S-ON)
Step. 2
Download 4EXT and copy the recovery.img into your Android Tools folder
Download SuperUser and copy the zip file into SD card
Step. 3
Flash your recovery with 4EXT (Go for Step. #3 in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525100)
Power down from bootloader menu,
Step. 4
Enter into bootloader menu (Vol + / - and Power)
Goto Recovery (You should get into 4EXT Recovery) and install SuperUser by locating it from the SD Card
Reboot from 4EXT menu
You're Done... Your HTC Desire S is now ROOTed
Your Stock ROM is now rooted, you can backup the current ROM using 4EXT, then go ahead with installing any Custom ROM as per your choice.
EDIT: I re-flashed with 3.2-RC3 version of SuperUser (http://androidsu.com/superuser/) as the previous version was not working properly in giving root permission to other apps.

Device: HTC Desire S (2.3.5 ROOTED)
HBOOT: 2.00.0002 S-ON

First of all, you mentioned that you were waiting for ICS. Well, it was released as a RUU (e.g. you loose all data), downloadable via HTCdev (I'm not allowed to post external links: htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads), enter "Desire S" as Device and "v4.0" as Android Version and you should see it (Desire S - HTC - WWE - RUU - N/A - v4.0 - 404.0MB - 14.01.401.2). You do not need to unlock or root to install it, if I remember right there were some information about people not being able to install it properly with an unlocked bootleader. Installing the update will lock the bootleader from what I've read.
You can also just flash a prepared version of this official update which preserves unlocked bootloaders, just search here. Not fully sure if that works with the HTC unlock, though, but I'm sure you should find it
Back to your question about reverting stock: you can always flash an unrooted stock rom, just search the forums.

S-OFF-procedure with no internet =no clockworkmod

I had no internetconnection when I did the revolutionary-S-OFF-procedure. So when the question come to update clockworkmod, I had to choose No. It was recommended to do a manual installation.
Do I have to do that before flashing a custom ROM?
Do I need to check something before flashing a custom ROM (and thereby rooting the device)
I want a clean ROM with good battery-time, had cynagoen on my wildfire, enjoyed that one, wich one do you recommend for me?
There are so many of them!
Edit: seems that I am unable to recieve or dial calls, send/recive sms etc after this? Cant even check internet...have been able to send some sms, but no connection what so ever after this was done?? Why is that?
Really no one who can tell me if I need to update CWM before flashing a custom ROM?
And no other that have had the same issues with no signals what so ever after this procedure?
pretty please?
You won't be able to backup and flash a ROM without a custom recovery like EXT4 or cwm. Install ROM manager to get cwm or use the oneclick installer for ext4 recovery.
XDA Premium App
HTC Desire S

Yes, you do need a RECOVERY before flashing any custom ROMs as it's the recovery that enables you to flash.
But first you need root, so follow instructions provided in the guide to root your device using GingerBreak v1.2
Installing Recovery
I'd then suggest that you follow the URL within this post which will download and install a small APK onto your device that will enable you to flash the excellent EXT4 recovery using a simple GUI.
I'd recommend this recovery over CWM and even though the post says that it's untested, that's no longer true as I've used it myself and it works fine.
Use fastboot.
fastboot flash recovery your_recovery_file.img
power+ Volume down key

Locked myself out - how to flash new recovery?

Good Afternoon to all of you!
So here is my problem.
I S-Offed my HTC Sensation and afterwards installed Revolutionary Recovery following this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Afterwards I installed the Firmware 3.30 and Virtuouse S4X Rom successfully on my device. But I wasnt to happy with this Rom so I decided I want to go for Energy Rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1226564).
Unfortunalety, the flashing of this ROM doesnt worked, while flashing it said "Status 1 Error". I searched in the post of this ROM and found out that its recommended to install it with a earlier release of Revolutionary Recovery or better with 4EXT Touch Recovery.
My big problem is: How do I install 4EXT Touch Recovery when I dont have any bootable ROM on my device anymore?? I tryed the Android Flasher but it didnt work...
Please help, I dont know what to do.
Best regardy,
Journeyman91
Remove sdcard put it in card reader
download IMG.zip of whatever recovery u r trying to install put sdcard reader in computer then move IMG.zip to root of sdcard. Put sdcard back in phone then fastboot...should find IMG.zip then install that way. Hit thanks if I helped

Please tell me you have a nandroid back up to revert to. And are you SuperCID as well? If you did back up, just revert back to the prior rom, I assume stock Sense. Then go to the market or the threads here to download the 4ext recovery.

[Q] stock rom with s-off ? what i need to do?

hello and sorry for the same questions asked over the same issue...
its my first time and im afraid to brick my phone
anyway now im with custom rom and want to go back to stock to receive ota updates.
my phone is rooted and s-off i want to stay s-off with stock rom.
1. is it possible ?
2. will i need to wipe data before the flash?
3. backup needed ?
4. will i get ota updates with stock rom s-off?
5. the ruu is europe 1.47 do i need it to match to my software/radio/hboot?
my phone:
SAGA PVT SHIP S-off RL
HBOOT -0.98.0002
RADIO-3805.06.02.03_M
EMMC-boot
@yonigo870
Since you want to stay s-off and a stock rom then....
1) Yes if you don't want need OTA. No if you want ota
2) Yes
3) If you want to restore your apps/data yes, google SHOULD be okay with contacts/calendar
4) Dont be silly, really, DONT TRY STOCK THINGS ON ALTERED PHONES, thats common sense (at least it should be)
5) You will not use a RUU, you wil use a pre rooted stock rom from the development forum
However, if you want to get ota updates you will need to go s-on and use a RUU, I suggest just getting the latest RUU
My suggesttion, rather leave your phone as is and install a stock pre rooted rom, you can always install the latest stock rom when the OTA is released and its made into a prerooted rom.

@foX2delta i agree with you
@yonigo870 flashing a ruu can actually force you into a bootloop if you flash the wrong RUU the best wasy to get to stock is to flash a pre-rooted stock ROM
heres both links to the RUU and pre-rooted stock ROMs

here is a few guides to help with that question i don't know anything about rom manager sorry i use 4ext touch recovery
Custom ROMS:
Custom roms can be found in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1146601 or head to the development section.
(Most of these ROMs are pre-rooted, which means that you don't need to root your phone after flashing one of the custom ROM.)
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using Recovery (Method 1)
(You can use your default recovery from Revolutionary tool but I recommend using 4EXTRecovery)
1. Copy your custom ROM "zip" file to your SD card (Root directory).
2. Turn off your phone.
3. Turn on your phone by holding the power button and the volume down button together.
4. Once you see the white screen, choose "Recovery"
5. Make a full wipe/format and clear all cache.
6. Choose "install from sdcard/zip file" and then choose your Custom ROM zip file from your SD card to flash your Custom ROM.
Optional: If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, just flash it like you are flashing your custom ROM(Step 6). Just do it before you flash your new ROM.
How To: Flash Custom ROMs using ROM Manager (Method 2)
(This method might be easier for flashing ROM updates or add-ons)
1. Go to ROM Manager (You can install this software from the Android Market.)
2. If you want to use 4EXTRecovery, please follow steps below, and if you're not using 4EXTRecovery, please skip to step 6)
3. Press your phone's option's button and choose Manual Flash Override.
4. Press OK and choose your phone model.
5. Choose ClockworkMod 3.x (After these steps, your ROM Manager won't ask you to flash new recovery again when flashing new a ROM)
6. Reboot into Recovery and make a full wipe/format and clear all cache then reboot.
7. Now, from your ROM Manager, choose Install ROM from SD Card.
Note: Flashing ROMs can be vary, some custom ROMs may require you to flash some of their own file first. Eg, The LBC Mod ROM requires you to flash "WIPE zip file" before flashing the ROM. Read their instructions carefully to know more.
NOTE: I am not responsible for any faulty or bricked devices after S-OFF or flashing new ROMs. Do it at your own risk.
How To: Flash a ROM in a "Perfect" Way (Method 3 - Recommended)
A great guide from vampire36 for people who encounter the following problems:
1. The ROM you flashed gets stuck on HTC screen (bootloop) while the same ROM works right for others
2. You get the same kernel and radio yet you find your cell to have more battery drain than others
3. Finally some strange force closes and restarts but works perfect for others
So this is basically one of the most perfect way to flash a custom ROM and is a way to help people who face such issues.
Please head to : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1257731 to see full instructions and discussions.

You can enter a boot-loop but I've flashed ROMs too many times to remember (stock & MOD) and never truly boot-looped. You may soft-brick your phone however, but with remedy. Rooting phones & flashing ROMs isn't for the faint-hearted. My phone was dead for almost 48 hours (within 24 hours of purchase). That's how I joined XDA.
Scary. Turned out it wasn't hopeless. Within an hour of Temp Root, I had self-styled flashed CWM Recovery (haven't run into the gung-ho method I crafted yet, at least on these forums), proceeded to acquire Permanent Root afterwards and within the week had flashed 4 ROMs. Invented a few tricks myself .
Point is you have to get your hands dirty. That's why you bought the darn phone in the first place! Pull your gloves & get those hands dirty!

Stuck at "optimizing android app"

I've a huge problem
I've a Sensation 4g I was on stock ics and i followed the guide to get root, htc dev unlock e CWM... (still s.off) after that I installed 4ext and ARHD 6.7.0.. and everything was fine..
Then i tried to install cyanogenmod 9 which requires CWM again.. so i've installed rom manager and installed cwm through it..
I was stuck on the bootloader image, so i tried to flash back my recovery which of course isn't working because i have CWM now and so i tried to flash back ARHD but it will get untill the beginning when it says "optimizing app" and it restarts and again and again....
Anyway i can fix this problem?? I tried to flash another rom "energy ics" which don't require 4ext.. but i got the same results!!! what should i do?! did i brick my phone?
anyway to install 4ext without having a rom working?

andre read my previous post to flash 4EXT this doesn't require a working rom
also in normal the backups are present on SDCRAD
ie /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup
so once you format the sdcard you will lose the backups

If I read this correct you have the official stock firmware that was with the T-Mobile OTA ICS update. This means your bootloader is locked even though you are S-off. You need to flash a engineered Hboot to solve this. Go to this thread to get a firmware package with this. Go to the "User-Friendly Firmware" thread by Kohr-Ah, or you can also use the firmware from GROG88's thread here.

You can flash custom ROMs with an unlocked bootloader. You just need to fastboot flash the ROM zip's boot.img each time. There are also more guides in the Desire HD forums.
