Are there any current ROMS or mods I could use to completely disable my capacitive buttons and have onscreen buttons used (GNex style)?
Thanks for any ideas,

just wanted to know what you guys and girls preferred for navigating a phones' (or a tablets') UI, and why?
what are the benefits and downsides of each?
thanks in advance for your replies!
I'm liking the capacitive so far on my Inc2, it stops dirt and grime from inserting itself next to and below hardware buttons. Also mine rotate when I turn my phone to landscape mode. If I was graced with a tablet I would like it to have as few "buttons" as possible!
I prefer hard buttons.
You don't have to look at the screen to press where you need to, and you dont need to remove your finger and reapply to click more than once.
hardware buttons
with buttons, its either you click or you dont (nothing accidental)
For navigating UI and managing things on my phone, I surely prefer the touch screen. BUT... when *anything* requires typing, real buttons beat touchscreen hands-down.
If only i could just use a mouse on my phone, lol.
I tried searching, so forgive me if this has already been addressed, but is there a way to temporarily disable the capacitive (menu and back) buttons? Sometimes when I am playing games or watching vid's with my phone in landscape I inadvertently hit the buttons with my palm. I know on my Transformer Prime we have the option to touch a small lock icon on the screen and swipe it to lock the on screen buttons while gaming etc. I am looking for a similar method do disable these buttons so I don't keep constantly undoing my last move in solitaire!
Thanks and any help is appreciated,
Mike
My buddy has the moto turbo, and it has capacitive buttons much like our OPO, but it still has a functional nav-ring. I love using the capacitive buttons, but I miss the ring functionality with the on screen navigation buttons very much. Doors anyone know if this is portable, or any kind of wip?
Cheers, and Merry Christmas!
I'm not sure what you mean by Nav ring, perhaps a screenshot? I'm guessing you're meaning something along the lines of pie controls, there's many custom roms that come with pa pie or slim pie included (in some cases both, eg mahdi). My preference is slimpie but they're both great!

Not talking pie, it's when you swipe up from the nav bar, and you get the ring with Google now by default. Just a handy shortcut. So on the opo, that works with capacitive buttons disabled, but with them enabled, no nav ring.
I'm on a cm12 build, so obviously its in the early stages with most features yet to be implemented, but even on kk ROMs, I haven't seen this mod.
On the droid turbo I believe the home button barely touches the bottom of the screen so the phone is able to follow your finger's trail and detect wether to show the nav ring or not. On the OPO the capacitive button are smaller than the turbo's even though you can't see their borders, so I doubt it would be possible to port this function to the OPO, but I'd be surprised if someone would manage to make it work
I too am looking for an app that allows that function. First time seeing it on the droid turbo and was eagerly looking for it. I don't like how the soft screen buttons takes up a portion of the screen, so I still prefer capacitive buttons.
My closest alternative right now is SideControl by Jawomo. Although it's just slightly less efficient than the Nav Ring, but it works similiarly. Just slide up from the bottom of the screen and it easily opens up a panel with my shortcuts. Works pretty well too.
Hope this helps!
I was wondering if it would be possible to disable on-screen buttons and have the fingerprint sensor used (and remapped) for home and multitask (double tap/long hold gesture), whether it be by kernel or custom rom.
On-screen buttons is probably the only thing that kept me from upgrading to m8/m9 and other phones like nexus 5 from my m7 and I would like to know if it would be possible.
The fingerprint sensor can double as home in settings without any modification.
But if you'll need back and multitask, I doubt this single button can do so much.
Would you like to try LMT launcher? You may be able to disable on screen button by simple tweak and use LMT swipe PIE and gesture instead.
I have on screen buttons to hide and I use LMT
I figured that since most apps have a back button (within the app itself) that the fingerprint sensor could be mapped for both short and long pressed, a short press for home and a long press/hold for multitasking/appswitch (or even double tap for multitasking/appswitch like I have on my m7 home button).
I have tried LMT/PIE gestures on the nexus 5 and it felt too bothersome in my opinion, though I also think that on the a9 it will be a little bit more tolerable if I have to use it for back/multitasking

Click to collapse
Does LMT interfere wirh the original and intended functions of the fingerprint sensor at all?
Not at all

So let's start a thread for the potential Mi Pad2 buyers.
Of concern to me in particular -- are the navigation capacitive touch buttons, haven't had the phone with the capacitive buttons for a long while now and the fact that the return/menu buttons are swapped comparing to native google placement, I'd need to disable them.
I've read up on some threads for disabling capacitive buttons by editing the build.prop file and wanted to make sure these methods still work for Mi Pad2.
Can anyone with the Mi Pad2 confirm if the navigation capacitive touch buttons indeed can be disabled? Ideally with a small Xposed module (and not the hog that GravityBox is).
Thanks!
UPDATE: Found the review which states that the option to disable capacitive buttons is baked into ROM. What about enabling the soft touch buttons for navigation tho?
