Just noticed today my camera lens has a fine scratch running across it. Its about a hair away from the shutter thankfully. Didn't think this thing would scratch that easily...Ive had a case on and haven't even dropped it once since I got it on day 1 of release!
Anyone else in the same boat as me? Now I'm pretty worried I will get another one across the lens area and it will cause my camera to be useless...and I already know vzw won't replace the phone for something like that (not that id want one of the junk refurbs anyway)

You can replace the camera lens for almost nothing. The cover you see when you take the battery cover off has the camera lense embedded in it and can be replaced in 2 seconds with a small screw driver. The cover is like $5 I think.

I can't seem to find it but I remember it was like $5 off a spare parts site. Maybe somebody else will chime in.

Didn't know u can replace cover tho. Good info to file away for later

That's good to know it can be replaced. The back cover from Verizon goes for about $8 also, so now I'm not too worried about scratches.
Thanks for the link! I guess color doesn't matter since you don't see that part anyway!

+1 to OP. Glad to know I have options. Fortunately the bad scratch I have stopped just short of causing any issues. No clue how it got there.

I wouldn't buy that one. I just got one and it doesn't match perfectly on VZW version. Notice the open hole towards the bottom. Also bottom inside parts doesn't allow it to easily sit flush. Screw holes match up though. The ebay one is the bottom picture.
If anyone knows of a way to get a VZW version let me know. Seems others may know of other sites? The actual fix is easy. Just need the part.
My problem is worse.
Ouch! Thanks for the heads up.

I got the extended battery more for the protection of the camera than battery life. The extended cover has a nice deep hole to protect the camera, speaker and flash. It also helps a tiny bit with sun glare on certain pics... a very tiny bit.

P990 (O2x) has a black back opposed to the G2x with the brown
Just been into phones4u and I can confirm the lense cover is different to the vodafone one I saw on Friday.... the voda one had an almost flush lense cover where as the
P4u phone didn't have a lense cover...
Thought I'd let everyone know asap
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I warned p4u that it was missing the lense and that they probably have a dodgy batch.... you can clearly see that the lense is missing.. .
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Could you not have posted this in the other thread? This kind of crap makes it hard to find anything in the forum. Also, my vodafone Sensation has a recessed camera, no flush casing.
Then yours is missing the lense cover that's meant to be on the case..... I'm sorry for making a new thread but personally I'd be happy to know this news if I didn't already know
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Why exactly would it be missing? HTC wouldn't send out a phone with such a GLARING error if it really was an issue.
People have said in the other thread, that all demo devices have covers, but devices we have don't. If you look at, where is the cover meant to go? That black ring inside the case is almost flush with the back of the case.
The phone vodafone let me play with was straight out the box. It was about 1/3mm indented within the case.
I'm not lying I just thought people ought to know. I'm going to there stored on Monday to get it and will maker sure it has the lense cover.

Any photo to confirm?
Like I said, I highly doubt HTC would send out devices with such a massive flaw.
No but I can safely say the phone p4u showed me whilst they checked it was unlocked for me, had a lack of lense composers to the one vodafone showed me on Friday after opening a fresh box for me. Definitely going to vodafone tomorrow to get it as I think the lense cover with be beneficial with time.
Tl;dr. There is definitely a difference from the phones I saw.

It hasnt actually been confirmed by vodafone or htc, your just giving your findings.
As far as I can see, no retail boxed sensation has the lens cover flush with the case.
It only seems to be demo phones that do. Perhaps early production models, used for demo only.
I'll get it tomorrow and show you... I'm not complaining nor am I from another board here to slate the sensation... I'm just reporting my findings as its something I'd like to know if I was missing a lense cover from a phone i just bought. The phone I was shown from vodafone was straight out of the box and not a demo.

What I dont get is how there could be so many phones without it. Its not like it even looks like its missing from my phone, it looks to be designed that way, there is no room to fit an extra lens over the hole.

^I agree with this.
Well, I hope you're not disappointed and find one with a lens cover. But also be ready in the eventuality that the design was changed.
Personally I think the only lens covers which are beneficial are sliding lens covers. Glass ones can get scratched and sure that protects the lens, but the only way to benefit from that protection is to remove the battery cover because if not you're still taking pictures through the scratches. And who wants to take off the cover every time they take a picture?
Please don't think I made this thread purely to spark an argument... it was not the intention if it seems that way. I'm just letting people know that there is definitely as difference.
I've had a bit of time to read peoples comments and am definitely getting the phone tomorrow regardless

I'm going to be interested to see what your replacement is like and what we hear back from vodafone and htc about the issue.
If it's recessed but edges are sealed that is even better option than if it was levelled with cover, don't you think? Less of a chance of scratching it.

that's what i mean! this is how the vodafone was that i saw on Friday...the case had the lense and it was ever so slightly recessed but it was all sealed.
The one from Phones4U didn't have the case lense, was about 1mm recesssed and Thought to myself dust will get in there a lot more and IF it got scratched, then you most likely need to pay more to fix.
thinking about going into to town at 9am tomorrow to get it from voda so i can spend all day playing with it whilst at work. Pretty sure this is the right phone for me. must admit...the main screen looks great have the curved edges
ok..my last post about this issue until i get the phone for myself tomorrow
I've just watched the slashgear unboxing vid and I'm 100% sure that the one he's carrying is the same one that was shown to me in Phones4u, where as the one i was shown in Vodafone definitely had a sealed lens cover on the rear casing...which would stop dust getting into the camera lens/battery area/chasis.
Can anyone who got it from Vodafone confirm this? I know a letter has been sent out to HTC about this, I'm personally just thinking about other people that are missing the lens, as i really think it's a faulty batch. The phone, when i played with it in P4U really did seem like it was missing the lens and didn't look complete without it.
This video shows a lens cover. Skip to 3:20, also at 4:10. You'll see the reflections.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-yRVxCvv7c
Again, don't know where he got the phone, but he posts here, so should be able to find out.
That video, 4:10, reflection isn't in the surface of the phone...there is no lens cover on that handset...but there isn't on mine either!
So i have had my fair share of smartphones but I have to say that my only pet peeve about this phone is how easily it is for the lens to smudge. I constantly have to find myself wiping the lens before taking any pictures. Is anyone else also having this issue?

Actually this is a good thread.
Why does not ONE single phone have a #@)*%@#ing shutter that closes over the lens? Like a regular friggin' camera. It seems so blindingly obvious. I've had to resort to using a loop made out of scotch tape to keep it from getting scratched or dirty in my pocket with all other stuff I throw in there.
Now sure maybe that'd add too much cost for phones. But what is even easier/cheaper? With less excuse?
Why do phone cases not simply have a little latched door that closes over it? Or a shutter that slides over the opening, to cover the lens and protect it? This is actually a much better question.. they have no excuse. I mean what is the purpose OF a "case" anyway? Protection.
The fact cases only have a dumb hole there and no protection is nuts. Even "good ones" don't have this. I haven't seen a single case with it... has anyone else?
Doors on the lens inevitably lead to scratches. Over time dust/dirt builds up between the lens and cover. Slide the door, scratch the lens. This is why I have an Otterbox Commuter case. The phone is already too slim to hold (for me), and the rear shell has tapered cavities for the speaker, flash, and lens. I put a thin strip of painter's tape on the back to cover the lens and flash. This is better than scotch tape since you can easily peel it off and reapply it several times, and you don't need a loop on the end which can get caught on things.

Like bob said the dirt scratches the lense and also the space constraints I would imagine. Looking at the camera there is physically no way to put a mechnical cover on it especially since it protrudes out. It just isn't possible.

They would have to make the bump way wider to house the cover when it retracts and it would look so ugly. Then they'd have to axe the little silver ring around it which would make it even uglier.
Hmm painter's tape..thank you bobj0e. Will need to get some.
Still I think cases should have a door or something. Sure the phone itself does not have room such a thing with today's tech. But cases should easily have room since they are adding thickness. Which means they are adding space between a door and the lens, there should be several mm between the two at least. Right? Doesn't it make sense some case should have such a thing, to protect the camera?
What are the chances that we will see replacement backings sold? Would they only be possible from LG or third parties too? I'd love to see a plastic replacement backing sold, if for no other reason than to have an extra back to use when I'm going out, just replace it at home and head out

I don't know, but I hope it is soon. I'd love to see some carbon fiber or leather backs being made.
with antennas and other components attached to the back glass wouldn't it be pretty unfeasible to see replacement backs?
What do you mean replace it at home and be out? You realize is screwed in right? It's also got a whole bunch of crap attached to it like antennas and wireless charging stuff.
If you mean like a skin or something, check out Skinomi they already have carbon fiber skins and others for this device.

I know it has screws but it can still be taken off, its just not "hot swappable" (easy to take off). I'm fairly certain it's still feasible to have different backings available, and maybe the replace it for going out was a little much, maybe its a bit more difficult than that, but to be able to replace it with something made of carbon fibre would be fantastic, just to not worry about the glass. Or even a replacement made of the same stuff for worse case scenario (it breaks). As for antennas and such, of course these would have to be taken into account for and added to any new ones.

You're acting like the back of the Nexus 4 is hideous or something. It's actually the most beautiful back side I've seen on a phone since the iPhone 4. Cool your jets and don't mess with what you have.
Q
I would love to see a replacement back that had a 4000mAh battery in it. I don't care if it added 6-8mm of bulk to the back. As long as it had a battery and another set of charging wires for the Qi charger I'd be happy.

Why don't you cool your jets before jumping to conclusions? I actually like the back and think it looks nice. However, it is glass and will crack eventually. I'm very careful with my phones and have never had a cracked screen, but accidents do happen. I also don't like how slippery it is. I'm getting a case for it to fix that problem, but just replacing the back with a different material would be nice. Just because YOU don't want a product doesn't mean others don't either.

Nexus 4 doesn't have a replaceable back and most likely never will... Use a good protective case when going out. I leave a case in my car and use it when I know I'm going out to the bar.
sometimes I joke to myself to tape the edges and the camera/speaker on the back and give the phone a quick once over using FlexSeal (rubber in a can) to protect it. LOL
That cannot be good for heat diffusion.

That seems hard to you? A proper torx screwdriver and a guitar pick would have the backing off in a hurry.
For those who say the backing is "not replaceable" must not have owned a Galaxy Nexus. At first people said it couldn't be replaced easily but then the white rear housing was released and people started swapping it onto their phones with no problem. And that rear housing requires much more patience and work than the backing of the Nexus 4 does.
I really wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing replacement backings in the near future. Ideally, I would like to see one without glass for obvious reasons. One with kevlar would be FANTASTIC!
I just noticed this morning that the housing that surrounds the lens is all scratched and scuffed. Phone is 2 weeks old, never dropped etc. I dont have a case for the phone so im guessing it was caused from being in my pocket. Has this happened to anyone else...its like I took sand paper to it.

I have been bothered by those damn scratches too! Then I saw a comment above about removing the plastic... I thought I had gotten all the packaging off but if you look closeley you will see the plastic scuffed ring in my photo. Glad I have that off now!!!
I'm thinking that plastic cover is the only thing keeping the lens off the surface when laying the phone down on anything "screen up".
It's a design flaw I suppose.
But I wouldn't take it off unless you have a case for your phone... Otherwise what's gonna keep the lens from physically touching the surface of the desktop or table when you lay your phone down screen up?

Anyone experience any lens scratching after removing the sticker and not having a case?
Well we know everyones protective cover gets all scratched up, mine included.
When you lay the camera down on its back the whole weight of the camera rest on the lens kind of a kind of a crappy set up if you ask me
Its only safe to assume the lens would get scratched also

Awesome! I'll give this a try. Thank you so much for your tip! Did you find that the camera lens touches the surface/gets scratched when you place the phone face up?
It's unfortunate the camera lens is designed to stick out past the backing slightly. It leads to scratches.
I think it's a result of thickness of the camera unit.
A nice fix with added benefit would be an OEM extended battery with battery cover to allow the lens to be inset from the backing.
