NANDROID partial data restore question?

ok, so android stores your sms/email/contacts in one of the partitions that are backed up using nandroid right?
So in theory, is it possible to wipe the phone/install a new rom/other distro,
Then restore say only the data.img that nandroid has made and restore the sms/emails etc without dumping all the other data (apps/rom version etc) back into the phone?

If its not possible. Might have to write an app....

Have you tried usung the app in the market called "Backup for root users"
I use it for the exact reason u mentioed including the market db.

I'm quite sure that you can do that. In fact, I have done it before. It involved using the cat command in the terminal to put the userdata.img file on the mtdblock1. But I can't exactly remember the command. It was something like
"cat /sdcard/data.img > /dev/block/mtdblock1"
Don't quote me on that, and it would probably do a little research to verify what I'm thinking.

Wouldn't sync take care of "restoring" your emails and contacts? Therefore the only reason for using a backup app would be to backup/restore SMS?
Granted like Silence15 said, I believe I've "flashed" data.img back to the phone, but I think I did it during my days of running Cupcake ROMs.

Any way to restore apps from a Nandroid backup without affecting newly-installed ROM?

I recently updated from DamageControl 1 to 2. Before updating, I did a Nandroid backup of my Sprint Hero.
I tried to flash the new ROM over the existing one (so as to retain my apps, settings, etc). That didn't work, as the phone would hang at the HTC "Simply Brilliant" screen when booting up.
I then did a wipe via the recovery menu, and re-flashed the latest DC ROM. This worked fine, but obviously I'm without all my apps and settings.
I know if I do a Nandroid restore, I could get everything back, but I would obviously lose my upgraded ROM.
So what I'm trying to do is find a way to extract my apps from the Nandroid backup and manually install them on the Hero.
Most apps I can simply redownload, and while it might take a little bit, it's not a huge deal. One paid app in particular, though -- Smart Keyboard Pro -- won't show up, while other previously-purchased apps do.
So my ultimate goal is to restore my apps from the Nandroid backup. Is there a way to extract the backup images and manually install the APKs or something like that?
I've tried searching XDA, but I couldn't come up with anything other than the full restore that Nandroid does. Again, that would work, but I would then be downgrading my ROM.

You can try Titanium Backup or AppMonster (formerly AppManager) to backup your apps. Titanium backs up user data too

I have been using AppManager but I heard Titamium Backup will do alot more .
With DC1 a2sd was enabled (Ithink) therefore all apps were saved on the sdcard in Android/data
I would strongly suggest using one of the apps above to save everything. Also everytime I install a ROM I go and download backup app I used and restore.

I'd restore the old ROM, backup apps with Titanium Backup (choose Batch from the menu, then (All User & System Apps and Data). Then put the new ROM back, and restore your apps and settings one at a time from Titanium Backup. I'd be lost without Titanium Backup.

you do realize that this thread is over a year old right?

A year old is ok, you never know if someone else has this same thought. You know if the roms have the same framework you could just move the data.img file to a new folder where the backup folder is at and edit the nandroid.md5 file by removing all the lines for the other img files excluding the data.img file. Then boot to recovery and choose the new folder from the restore backup menu. Works for me.

File Expert will back up apps, too. It also has a setting to automatically back up an .apk for every app you install and/or uninstall. File Expert just backs up the .apk files into a folder called "Backup Apps". It does not back up app data.
Also, Titanium Backup will extract apps from a nandroid backup. I am not sure whether it will restore an app with its data from a nandroid backup, but it will let you extract an app.

Using Titanium Backup to do a full backup.

Is it possible to use Titanium backup to do a total full backup?
So I can wipe it all, experiment with other roms, then if I decide to go back to the current one (Android Revolution HD), I just run super wipe, run the rom, then the no-sense, then run the backup with titanium backup, and will it be as it is now? All my apps still installed, all my apps arranged into folders in the app drawer and all my messages and all that?

its easier with cwm because you would`nt have to flash the rom again and install titanium backup again cwm will put everything back the way it was

Sounds like a nandroid backup is what you really want to do. You can do that in recovery under backup/restore. It will take an entire image of your current ROM. Then you can experiment with other ROMs and go back to the backup you made and everything will be exactly as you left it. Backing up and restoring system data in Titanium Backup is not really a good idea between ROMs. Use it mainly for backing up user apps/data.

I booted into CM7 and did a backup there, the backup is like 871mb, does that include apps and everything I want backing up?

What about backing up text messages and home screen configs? I have ran restores on titanium before and seem to only sometimes get this restored. I flashed a rom 2 days ago and just today randomly, my text messages came back... weird...

Titanium backup is ****ty. Used it once to back up and restore my apps, but during restore it screwed up app data and half my restored apps were force closing when I tried to run them. I would find something else if I were you

not CM7 - its CWM
Anyway, a nandroid is what you are referring to and as it seems what you have done.
My last nandroid was over 1.2 GB
Experiment all you like now with various ROMs.You have your security net of a known working backup..(if the **** hits the fan)

[Q] SMS restore

Hi all,
Unlocked and installed CM10 ROM on my Desire S yesterday,all went well and its great having Jelly Bean on my phone. Few bugs here and there but nothing too serious. My problem is restoring my old text messages to the device. Before the installed i backed up my messages from within the Desire S stock messaging app. This created a folder on my SD Card with a file in it,after i unlocked my phone i was able to restore the messages from within the stock app.
After installing the CM10 ROM i cant restore from within the messaging app preinstalled or from any program(SMS Backup etc) in the app store. I take it the HTC stock messaging app can only restore the backup file it made. So is there any work around or are messages gone for good.

You could restore the stock rom, flash SuperSu or superuser to get root access, and backup your messages with titanium backup (preferably xml), then restore cm10 backup and restore messages with titanium backup.
Quite time-consuming, but you would have your messages again.
Or maybe you could extract them straight out of the nandroid backup with titanium backup, but i don't know if that's possible.

A better bet - although it still involves restoring your old ROM - would be to use SMS Backup & Restore. I paid for the full version as I have it set to automatically backup all my text messages at 2am every day, sync the backup with my Dropbox account and keep 3 days of backups.

Yeah thought I'd have to install the old ROM bit of a pain,should of backed them up with a proper app first. Didn't backup the stock ROM take it I can find it somewhere if I decide to go that route..

Apps Backup and Restore

Hello everyone...
First of all, i'll like to apologise if this thread is already in existence cos i dont really know how to search through over thousands of thread created. I love trying out types of custom rom i feel wld be great. But everytime i install, i'll have to start installing my apps (backed up apk's) manually. Could anyone help me with any app which i can use to backup installed apps so after flashing a new rom, would just have to restore the backup which would install all app and its settings instead of doing it manually all from the start. i googled and downloaded an app Nandroid Manager but i dont figure how to use it.. It wont set a backup location. Any help???

Not very familiar with nandroid back up but i am using titanium backup(buy it, worth every penny), it give u option to both backup your app+data.
I think the free version has the same option.
There is also this app. i used recently on a game(pudding monsters) and it restored the app with the data.
Try both and see which works best for u.

You can also do it yourself by doing a copy paste of your data/app folder

Titanium is the best way you can choise

This can be done by two way
1) Titanium Backup - This will ensure all your app and data will be restored on new ROM in single click
a) Backup all user app+data of old ROM
b) Create a Update.zip through Titanium backup app
c) Flash the Update.zip through Recovery (Post installation of new ROM) and enjoy :good:
2) Nandroid backup - By using this option , entire ROM can be backed up (App,Data everything as on date). However this can be use only if you are going back to experience the same ROM again.
1) Through Recovery take the backup of entire ROM
2) Through Recovery restore
3) If you are on S-ON then post restore flash the boot.img manually by using Fastboot command before rebooting the phone. It is must to do step or else phone will be trapped in bootlap
I always ensure following before installing a new ROM
1) Back up of Contacts, SMS/MMS and Call logs by using My Backup Pro app
2) Creating the Update.zip file of all user app+data as on date so nothing can be missed out (Not even save games of Temple Run)
And if I want to go back again to the earlier ROM then I used Nandroid backup. Which reduce a hell lots of efforts.
