Mobile data failures, but IMEI is fine! - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

This started when my phone wouldn't come on when pressing the power or home buttons. I pulled the battery, put it back in, and mobile data didn't work. About Phone showed an IMEI and everything else, but didn't know my phone number.
Reinstalling, everything seemed fine. It knows my number every time now, at least. This is where the problem has been each time. It'd be fine, but each time I put CM10 on it seems to gradually break again.
When I went back to my stock Nandroid backup, restored to "out of the box" stock, and then put it through all the paces again to get to CM10, everything was fine from last night up to midday today. LTE went, then 3G went. Now I'm going back to my stock Nandroid.
Where should I look to start debugging this? Everything seems fine when I go through About; the IMEI and everything else are there, and so is my phone number.
Thanks!
Edit: A last ditch fresh install of CM10 didn't work, but the stock rom does. This seems to place it on CM10, as long as data on the stock one doesn't go out.

Im currently running CM10 and expereiencing the data drops as well though it only happens when I am at work in a low signal area. Once I walk outside into 4g I am fine and it does not drop data.

The data drops on CM10 are normal, I have read about them in earlier unofficial builds of it, but the nightlies we have now do in fact have a much better connection than prior builds. It is just something that the CM team has been working on and improving and probably will until a stable build is released. Most of the time though a data drop or signal drop (I have had a couple of these) can be fixed by turning airplane mode on and off or simply by rebooting the phone.

Phone wont stay shut off?

Hello again everyone, im here with another new problem. Out of the blue.
This is what happens.
-Phone is on
Hold down power
Shut off
-Phone shuts off screen goes blank
5 seconds pass
-Phone boots up... never touch a thing....
WTF?
It will not stay off, no matter the rom, I pulled the batter,SD,SIM nothing will shut it off unless i pull the battery.
I've downgraded the phone with the ace hack kit, ive re-rooted. nothing. I've searched, nothing. Anyone out there got a clue? Cus I dont.
FYI:when the phone rebooted after it flashed the downgrade during re-rooting, the alarm was going off and had the snooze button and everything, no matter what it wouldnt go off. but I just went on with the root process and now its gone, but the phone still wont stay off, something just screwed up!
That's hilarious, and I don't mean that literally. I am laughing though, kind of. Why? Because the same thing just happened to me last night. I know I said the exact same thing you said, possibly more. I have been on the same rom for a week and the only thing I have done was update a couple of apps from the market last night. Nothing else was done. Suddenly I can not power off the phone, it simply shuts off for five seconds and then reboots. I have wiped, restored, and tried flashing and the issue still persists. I am heavily researching and experimenting on what could be the cause for this issue. If I figure it out I will be sure to let you know.

Lol that is funny, what apps did you update?
I also have a problem with charging the phone and not sleeping, i was starting to think that it was just finaly getting worst
The only apps that were updated were Battery Monitor widget, Elixir, Xfinity TV, and one more which I can't remember right now. If you do get your phone to shut off, which I have been able to do twice, it may not wish to power back up, which is what mine does now also. (Laughing hysterically now.) Just pull the battery out and put it back in and it will power up. My feelings are that this may have been caused by some kind of update. Possibly from the market or from ATT. I have tried three different roms and it is still doing the same thing. I am about to wipe and restore the phone back to stock and see if it does it still. I will keep you appraised.

I dunno, I already did that and it did nothing, but I guess its worth a shot for you...
And I dont have any of those apps
If I find something I'll post here

I am very confused by this, but I will have to try a restore to stock to see what happens. I do find it strange that two different people had this happen to their phones at about the same time and day. I will let you know how things progress later.
Edit: What version of Clock Work Mod recovery do you have installed and which rom were you running? Trying to go through the variables with this issue.

Yeah it is odd, could be coincidence, could be related, dunno, I dont see how it could be an ATT update when nearly all the roms here have that function disabled. Then again maybe you know something I don't
What did you do to get it to turn off finally? I dunno if I wanna try now that you said it wouldn't turn back on.
Also, what rom where you on when it started, I was on CM nightly #121 or maybe #120 I forget
I just happened to come across this in the general section
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1145495
no fix though
I am restoring an old rom and I will try changing the date as someone suggested to see what that does. If it does not work then I will have to wait until later tonight to return the phone to stock and go step by step from there.

Could this have something to do with partitioning the SD card? I think i remember reading that clockwork bricked some phones, is that true?
I believe CWM did have some problems partitioning before. Not sure if it still does. It seems like I have found a fix for myself. I turned off automatic system time and date and reset the date to January 2012. The phone seems to be working like it did before this occured. I will wait until tomorrow and change the date back to automatic and see if the power issue shows back up, but for now it seems ok.
Edit: I changed the time and date back to automatic and it is working like it should again. Did you get yours working again or is it still having problems?

Try leaving automatic off for a whole day. Then see if it is still having this problem. Also replied to pm but try this first to see if it gets past it and works..
willdo thanks a bunch

[q] no signal!!!

Guys I'm having an extremely frustrating issue. Anytime I flash a ROM, it'll work great for a little while, but then sometimes when i reboot, it'll say no signal, and then my phone thinks it's in airplane mode. I try to get out of it, but it won't. Then randomly it'll get signal, but the phone will be so slow and laggy, and then it goes back to no signal and no more lag. I've been using Infused ROM and usually that one is okay, but sometimes I've had to reflash to get it fully working. Lately I switched to SensatioN ROM using Hellraiser, and this one has given me trouble every single time. I've reflashed about 5 or 6 times, and even went back to stock. Any idea what is going on?!?

My first guess would be a hardware defect. Try a complete return to stock (and STAY stock), including a wipe/factory reset from the Settings screen and see how it performs. If the signal is still wacky - time for warranty service.

Data doesn't come back on even after leaving a dead zone

So where I live has solid 4G, but, once in a while, I'll go into an area with no data. When I leave the dead zone and come back to my house, the data stays cut off. I've tried dirty flashing the ROM over it again, but that doesn't help. The only thing that has worked so far is to reflash the ROM after wiping everything. If it only happened once in a while, it'd be fine, but I go into the dead zone approximately once a week, so it becomes a real hassle.
Is this common? It's been happening on the Synergy ROM. I would just use Hyperdrive since it has almost the same features, but I've just been getting much better battery life and charging times with Synergy.
Is there a way to fix this? I've been thinking and the only thing I can come up with is when I flash a ROM after wiping, it takes a few seconds to activate my LTE. If there was a way to repeat that process without wiping, I think it'd work.

[Q] Is it possible to go to stock rom without a computer??

Hey, so I have the infuse 4g on JB 4.2.2, and I want to get it back to a stock 2.3.5. I have looked at every forums, but I want to know if it's possible to do so without a computer. Is there a .zip package that I can just flash as a normal rom to make it go back to normal?? Thanks!!
You have to have a computer to return to stock because ICS and newer use different partitions for everything than gingerbread. Flashing with Odin on a computer includes a file that tells the phone the old partitions and allowing it to run gingerbread.

I am running my phone with the 1.275 release of the Beanstalk. Last month I forgot my phone in my pocket when going in the sea (I believe this is a common problem among people recently). After it got wet, it didn't work at all for over 12 hours. I took it apart and made sure I dried everything. I cleaned all connections with alcohol and put it back together. It booted and it took a while to settle. I didn't expect it to go without issues. All works great except two things:
1. It takes a long time to wake up when pushing the power button. Sometimes I miss calls because the screen stays dark too long and by the time it wakes up, I have already missed the call.
2. When a USB cable is plugged in, it is not responsive. I found a way around it - right before plugging it I wake it up and hold my finger on the screen. Then connect it with the cable and luckily it stays awake during the whole time.
I decided to upgrade to a newer release of Beanstalk and did that by flashing 1.275. I was hoping that this will fix it. Unfortunately everything stayed the same.
Next idea - return to stock and make my way to the Beanstalk again. Well, I can't make it go in Download Mode and two computers couldn't recognize it. I used different cables including the original one, but without any luck. Then I installed a reboot widget from the play store and was hoping that it will reboot in download mode, but no luck again.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? At this point I am not certain if this is just a software issue. It could be a hardware problem as well.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

[Q] Screen randomly goes black

I've been having this problem starting the last couple of days. I'll be using my phone, and all of a sudden the screen turns off and nothing short of a battery pull will turn it back on again. Sometimes it happens when I'm not using it at all too. I'll pull it out of my pocket and get nothing. Do a battery pull, and everything's fine again until the next time it happens. Never had this problem before, but in the last two days it has happened 7 times. It even happens when it's plugged in. The LED indicator that is normally lit up when it's charging will go out. Unplugging it and plugging it in seem to have no effect. No sounds, nothing.
I'm running Jellybeans 4.1.2 Rom, with TWRP. Today I ran a backup, cleared and wiped data, fresh install, recovered backup and still having the problem. Should I try a clean install without recovering the backup? Could that have anything to do with it? Any other ideas on what to try or what the problem could be?
If you've been running the same ROM this whole time and it just started out of the blue, I don't really think it would be ROM related. It might be hardware related.
I suppose the only real way to test if it is ROM related is to ODIN back to stock and see if it still happens. If it does keep happening once returning to stock you could probably get it swapped out by Verizon.

I've been running the ROM a lot longer than I've been having the problems, so I suspect you're right. I've had the phone for over 2 years now, so there's no warranties anymore. If it really is a hardware problem I'm probably looking at a new phone.
I'll try going back to stock though and seeing if it changes. Thanks!
Update: I just flashed did factory reset and flashed back to stock, but can't even get through initial setup before it goes black...guess it is hardware.
