Is TWRP recovery required before rooting tf300? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have tf300 running JB, it is a little one week old, locked and stock. As I am looking how to root it while remaining locked, I find some posts mentioning install TWRP recovery before rooting. Is TWRP a must? Any insight?

As of right now, yes, or cwm if you prefer. An exploit to root and not unlock the bootloader has not been found yet.

btw, ive just rooted with that method, and then installed twrp via terminal emulator - but when i try to boot into recovery it says booting recovery kernel image, then has an android loading image, then changes to a picture of a 'dead android' with a red exclamation mark over his stomach.. any ideas why its doing that?
it boots into normal android just fine..

That doesn't work if you are on stock jb with a locked bootloader and not rooted. If you formerly had root on ICS using this method then it is possible to save it.

that depends.
if you only want to root it but keep stock firmware and recovery, you should do it now before updating. as long as you are on version .17 you can use sparky root to root, OTA root keeper to backup root, update, use OTA root keeper to restore Root and enjoy.
if you want to Flash ROM's and stuff, you can do whatever you like. you will have to unlock the bootloader and as far as i can tell, that is supposed to work on any software version as long as it is ICS. unlock, flash recovery, flash your ROM of choice.

So if I want to flash stuff it won't matter? Most ROMs will come rooted, so then do the update?

You can update and still root on the latest firmware. I got mine and updated out of the box and was able to root it easily. I don't know why someone is saying you need to be on .17

Even if you update to .30, you could always root it via Debugfs method.

The only thing you can do without unlocking the bootloader is rooting it, nothing else.

Not true.
I've rooted, while still having a locked bootloader.
If you're still on ICS can use 1-Click root v1.1 here
If you updated to JB, then not sure if you can root at the moment.

Just so there is no surprise, you will most likely start getting errors when it tries to push files to your device. It pushes to /data/local which no longer has write permissions for all users.

It doesn't work for the reasons stated in this thread. Just errors and an offer to exit at the end.
I'm still hoping someone will try to downgrade using fastboot since the updated boot loader has the USB option. If we can downgrade, we can easily root.

I hear you. That's why I recommend a PC because you are in ultimate control, but ROM manager is supposed to be intelligent enough to know what you're running and install the proper recovery... supposed to be honestly I've installed it but not used it for that, so I can't speak from experience.

fastboot can brick a tablet, too.
Rom Manager bricks it, cause it has not the right CWM for tf300. Use gomanager and flash TWRP.
I agree any type of flashing can brick it. I just like the PC because I depend on myself instead of an app. I've not tried twrp app but have read good things about it.

Twrp was pulled from goo manager because of the 2 different versions - one for ics loader and one for jb loader. Since it may not be able to tell what boot loader you have twrp was pulled off.

You can go here. http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/97 and there is a method to install twrp using terminal. Follow the directions in the link.

As I can remember Rom Manager shows you the wrong kernel, so you shouldn't use it - I can just recommend you Fastboot, it's how I did it and it's pretty easy (just watch the Vid in the Hydro Jb-Rom )

i'm using fastboot to flash cwm then reboot and run the root.zip....as stated int he CWM development thread.
I'm able to instal CWM, but i cant backup...it freezes on backing up boot.
Then i give it a shoot to run the zip without backing up. it went well but when i reboot the sys it appears a message, before leaving CWM,: this device as lost root (yes for fix it or go back). neither options root the device
Anyone...this Q&A- sucks....Please Help

Unlock and root after jb update

I have looked around for a few days now but I can't seem to find a way to unlock and root after the JB update.
I would like to avoid the asus unlock if I can only I don't know if I can yet. =/

At present, if you are on jb and want root, you must unlock. There's a guide in the general section. Follow step 3 to get root, and recovery as a bonus.

Absolutely. I used twrp to flash it just because it worked better for me, but cwm will flash it too. Flash it, download supersu from the store, update the such binary automatically with it, and off you go with root.

Ok, I'm confused. I rooted before I took the update thinking I would continue to have root after....that isn't the case. So now I want to root again, Does this link help me with that? I don't think It will from what I am reading but again, I'm not sure.

Some people lost root after the update, especially those who did a factory wipe of data afterward, like me. This guide helps those with unlocked bootloader. At this time, you cannot root jb with a locked bootloader if you lost it during the upgrade.
