Recommend a ROM - Samsung Infuse 4G

My wife's Infuse is currently on stock. She's interested in trying a custom ROM, but my research indicates that there are a lot of tethering problems with current ICS and JB roms for the Infuse. The ability to tether (mobile AP) is vital for us. We pay for the tethering plan on her phone and that is our home internet connection as neither cable nor DSL is available where we live.
Can someone recommend a good "daily driver" Infuse ROM that is stable, lean, with working tethering? ICS would be awesome, but GB would suffice.

The best way to know is to test them. Cm10 latest build has tethering fully working as of latest build.
GB should be the most stable, but JB has been great for me, plus it is amazingly fast.
Look in the OPs for what is working and what is not, and for screenshots, and that should give you a clearer idea.
Sent from my sweet & buttery Infuse

I don't tether so I'm not sure which is best for that but might I suggest bigjoe2675's ISET sticky. You'll find great info and links to nearly every Infuse ROM here on XDA I believe. Like andros11 stated research and testing will get you the results you are looking for.

If it was my phone, I'd be all for the "download and test until I find one that works right" method. I have a Captivate and I flash new ROMs pretty often. But my wife doesn't want to go through that process. She's had Zeus and CatyRom previously, but had issues with them and just wanted to go back with stock and "quit messing with it."
I have looked through the threads and typically see something like this:
What Works?
Almost everything that works on ICS!
What Doesnt Work?
Same things that dont work on ICS..
Click to collapse
That doesn't really tell me much. Trying to research what does and doesn't work in ICS lead me to discover that tethering was one of those things that "doesn't work."

I believe it was written like that since CM10 was really meant for an experienced crowd who should know what worked and what didn't in ICS, but I definitely get you. Scott might want to make that part clearer soon.
Look in Entropy's CM9 for a complete list of what is working and what is not at ICS level.
If none of the issues would mind her daily phone use, then I would say to give CM10 a try and hope she doesn't come back to you later for help
Sent from my sweet & buttery Infuse

Make sure to read Bigjoe2675’s ISET page. Going from stock to GB to ICS to JB and maybe back can be a real learning experience. Lots of opportunities to soft brick your phone. I have a lot of experience in doing that.

Emancipation. Everything works and is as close to perfection as you can get. I was on uniporn forever but never tried to tether so I don't know if it works. But it was super stable and my DD for a while. Now I'm on cm10 and loving it.

A lot of things work now I have tried looking for what does and doesnt. I would recommend cm10 whether its paranoid jb or unofficial cm10 jb. CNA seems fine also. I say those ROMs cause they are always updated . And if our moving from stock why not go all they way to jellybean its equal if not better then ICS. Just keep in mind if u goto jellybean u need to flash a ics rom first. Like entropys cm9 . I always flash it twice the first time. Then reboot and flash jelly.. just a habbit for me .Good luck on finding your rom

I have soft bricked my Captivate more imes than I can remember! I'm a pro at that now and can do it and recover without batting a lash! But soft bricking her phone makes me nervous. I'm trying to do the research but the minor differences leave me a little unsure. I think I would like to put her on CM10.
She is on GB (2.3.6) right now (not rooted and no cwm). I need to flash a kernel from post 2 or 3 of his thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
Then I can flash Entropy's CM9 from this thread, right?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1601844
How does "firmware" differ from a "rom"?
After that just flash CM10 from this thread?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776129
Following all directions closely, making backups of apps, data, efs, etc. That pretty much cover it?
Are bootloaders anything to be concerned with? On the Captivate, you have to have GB bootloaders before you can flash JB. Since she's already on GB, I don't guess that is an issue. I just want to make sure there aren't any caveats like that I might be overlooking.

That would be the right path. Just make to follow each Roms flash instructions and you should be fine.
Not having GB bootloaders on either ICS or JB would leave you with a hard to read rainbow recovery.
If you updated to GB using Kies though, you should already have them.
Sent from my sweet & buttery Infuse

I didn't use Kies. After trying some custom roms before, I used the Heimdall one click to get her back to stock 2.3.6.

Is there a way to see which boot loaders I have?

What company u have for service?

The only way i know is to flash an ICS rom and see if your recovery is all "rainbow-y" ...honestly I'm not sure except for that way.
My guess would be: if you're not sure if you do and you did not get GB 2.3.6 through Kies you probably do not.
Not having GB bootloaders will not adversely affect your phone operation just boot animations and recovery. It will look like static or rainbow colors. Some peope live with it and are able to navigate through recovery without GB bootloaders as a bad bootloader flash is one of the few ways to bork this phone...not always but it does get a little hairy trying to save it. The bootloader flash itself is not difficult as long as you read up and follow the instructions precisely.

Ok, here's my plan:
1) Backup. Titanium Backup, Contacts, EFS (backup script CWM-EFS_BACKUP.zip), etc.
2) Flash Stock GB (UCLB3 Heimdall - Stock_SGH_I997_UCLB3_Repartition-One-Click.jar).
3) Flash a second time to get GB boot loaders.
4) Flash Entropy512's DD Kernel (SGH_I997 Entropy Test Kernel-One-Click.jar)
5) Flash "Clean Wipe" script (CWM-Clean_Wipe_before_ROM_Flash.zip)
6) Flash Unofficial CM9 (cm-9-20120728-UNOFFICIAL-infuse4g.zip) - twice, wiping cache, dalvik, and formatting System before each flash.
7) If staying on CM9, flash gapps (gapps-ics-20120429-signed.zip).
8) Flash Unofficial CM10 (cm-10-20120823-UNOFFICIAL-infuse4g.zip) and Inverted GAPPS (inverted GAPPS justinbean8-24.zip)
These are just the main steps. I have a folder for each step with everything downloaded and all of the instructions and links copied from forum posts. Also have some other things downloaded like Samsung drivers, an ICS Heimdall One-Click that was linked to a couple times, an EFS backup script, etc.
The ParanoidAndroid ROM looks really cool, but I think I'll wait until it's sync'd with the 8/23 update of CM10 so I know tethering will work. I may just leave her on CM9 until then, I don't know.
EDIT: I just realized... she's not rooted, so I'll have to do that first thing so I can install TiBu and do a backup of all her apps and data...

Plan looks just fine.
Any snags, you should be able to get help here.
Have read it is ok to re-install apps with Titanium, not a good idea to restore data. Let the ap do that when you run it.
Edit: Be sure you have the latest version of Java before running Heimdall. Get it here: http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Looks good

To root, can I install Entropy512's DD Kernel from step 4 first, then flash the Superuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip file I just downloaded? Or should I use a different Kernel?

[Q] Rooting problems, please help!

Hi everyone. I am trying to root my wife's galaxy s 4g (I have a vibrant). I am using a mac with parallels and windows xp. I have tried all of the instructions. I have the drivers installed, net 2.0 framework, mono for xp installed usb debugging turned on...yada yada. Every time I try to open superoneclick it fails to run...it gives me an error message that the application had to close and then offers me the option to send error report. I've tried downloading superoneclick versions 1.7 through 2.1 and none of them will run. What am I missing? Why is this so hard?
Thanks

Unfortunately I don't. the phone gets recognized by windows just fine when I plug it in. I just can't get the superoneclick app to open

All you need is Odin, there are numeral roms available that are already rooted.
There's really no need super one click.
Just keep in mind that your phone is completely different, in other words only use files meant for sgs4g

Thanks, however I don't necessarily want to flash a rom. She is very happy with touchwiz, I just want to be able to delete bloatware, make backups, etc....basically I just want her to have root access. If she wants to flash a rom she can do that later, it's her first smartphone and she's not that adventurous.
There's stock roms rooted as well such as kd1(last official rom released for sgs4g) and most of the roms still use touch wiz. They can be found in the sgs bible. As long as they have the word "stock" in them they are just that... Stock with every piece of bloatware included.
Hope this helps

Defiantly backup first... Titanium should do.

IMO, you should flash KH2 and drhonk's kh2 kernel. It adds ext4 support, auto-roots and adds red cwm, but leaves things stock from there on. There's a raw odexed leak available on these forums, as well as a stock but deodexed (well, the crt on/off effect is added), as well as whitehawk's Valhalla, which is stock (and deodexed), except it has the power menu mod and custom lockscreens (9 of them, zOMG).
My personal recommendation is the odexed leak and drhonk's kh2 kernel. I'm not big on deodexed roms, myself, but it's more a personal choice than anything. Also, if you go this route, all you need is Odin
Moving to Gingerbread is the best thing I ever did on this phone. I strongly urge you to dump froyo straight away, and make the move to gb!
Hope this helps you decide what to do
[Odin]What Time is it? It's Leak Time T959VUVKH2 Build Date 08/11
[Kernel][GB][KG4/KG6/KH2] Stock Kernel + CWM + Voodoo EXT4 Lagfix
[ROM-Leak][CWM] Gingerbread 2.3.4 T959VUVKH2 Deodexed + CRT On and Off Enabled!
[ROM] Valhalla v1.1 [KH2][9 Lockscreens!][9.15.2011]
Oh, and, if you're like me, you HATE the T-Mobile jingle/animation.
Here's a little package I cooked up for CWM to replace the T-Mobile boot/shutdown animations and sounds with those from the Galaxy S II (GB only):
[MOD][CWM][GB] Galaxy S II Boot/Shutdown Animations w/Sound
I would love to backup first, but I don't know how if I'm not already rooted. Titanium only works with root.

Moving to Q&A
Why don't you just use Odin to flash Bali on froyo. Backup. Flash gb. Restore data. Not sure if that will work. I remember there being froyo to GB issues. just list your apps and start from scratch. It's worth it, as jay says.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
If you want to restore your froyo apps on GB, you can either use Titanium Backup, or these steps in the advanced restore option in CWM, as tested by another member here:
Flash whichever GB ROM you want according to instructions, but don't boot the rom when complete (do a battery pull if you have to).
Flash Bali Kernel on top of your GB rom, DO NOT BOOT THE ROM
Use CWM, go to restore, then advanced restore your data, DO NOT BOOT THE ROM
Reboot recovery, and flash one of DrHonks GB kernel
That *should* restore your data. I personally haven't tried this, but a few members reported that it works.

Is it possible to make internet snappier?

I just rooted my phone yesterday and removed all the bloatware (big thanx to Lumin30)
Now I'm wondering if I can make it even snappier without flashing too much stuff on it.. since I'm too new to this business and would prefer having my phone mostly stock

If you have cwm installed. I'm assuming you do since you're rooted. Dsexten's adrenalin shot and the scroll mod can work wonders for making things snappy while maintaining a stock phone.

For actual data speed, you can probably make it faster by leaving your phone on CDMA mode only (keeps you locked in 3G/4G). If left in Auto mode, it will revert to EDGE when you aren't using data.
I feel like it makes a noticeable difference, since your phone won't need to switch back and forth.
As for the actual speed of a browser, I've been using Dolphin since I got my phone. It's very snappy.

If you don't want to use the kernel then you can use KJ1. I haven't had a problem with the kernel. And when you flash the custom ROM it will have that same kernel -- just updated. You only flash that kernel to get CWM to flash the ROM. When you flash the ROM it comes with a kernel that will overwrite the kernel you flash with SGS.
And Voodoo sound is not the same as Voodoo lagfix.
You just need to follow the direction to get where you want. If you think some of the directions are clear... then tell me which one's and how. I will take a look at and see if I can make them clearer.

Check your mounts in mounts and storage and read the OP of ROM for correct mounts – U=Unmount / M=Mount. I had to change some coming fresh out of the box.
o Then choose 'install zip from sdcard', then 'choose zip from scard', then go to bottom, find ROM you copied over, select install and wait.
thats a lil confusing...
and to double check the first step:
all i have to do is download Subtly Modified Stock for T959V KJ6 v0.1.1-rc1 and flash that kernel with kernel flasher from the market? simple as that?
Yes on the kernel.
Don't worry about the mounts. I need to change that. The aroma installer will handle that for you now. What ROM are you going to flash?
ICBINB 2.3.7 since I read its mostly stock with no theming and is super fast and only uses 46mb internal space since it heavily debloated... would u recommend it?
BTW thanx again man!

Go reread the guide. Take notes when you go through. PM me anything you think needs to change or be added. If you have flashed the kernel - just flash it - follow the directions to flash the ROM and you are good to go. Take note of the steps in the Aroma Installer you do and PM those also and I will add them to the guide. Aroma Installer is what you will see after you select install for the ROM.

Things I've learned today that you all may or may not know. If you are having any lag issues with this ics update this worked for me. And you must be rooted. First freeze or remove any unused apps att bloatware etc etc. For a list of the ones its safe to remove or freeze search the dev forum. Since my phone is still under warranty for now I just chose to freeze those apps but if you are out of warranty you may just want to remove them which you can do with titanium backup. Now I don't know why but this second thing really made my phone a lot faster. Install apex launcher like I said I don't know why but it did. So try it it just might work for you. Now if I could just figure out the battery drain issue I would be ok. Any ideas on fixes or tweeks for extending battery life on ics???

better battery stats will help u figure out whats draining your battery. Also, i don't know where this "warranty" idea u have came from, but u voided it the second u flashed that ics leak, which hasn't actually been released yet. Also, if u did use the oneclick ics, i high recommend u flash a different ics custombrom through cwm, stock is too buggy. Superlite 5, team perfection, and ics - the real thing are all good choices
Well from what I was told if it didn't trip the flash counter they could not tell if it had been flashed and the flash counter when I got done with everything flashing the update flashing cwm and rooting when done the flash counter said none. You don't wanna get rid of the stock task manager, if that's what you did. What exactly do you think you just did? You flashed cwm with odin, you flashed a rom, you flashed a kernel, and you flashed a radio. All custom and not official=warranty void. You can get away with this by flashing the sammobile tar and unrooting, but as of now your warranty, well, you don't have one. I would also advise you read more before you go flashing, deleting and freezing anything else. This is how bricks happen.

I'm at work so I can't do it now, but when I reflash CWM will my old backups reappear?

Yeah if they are still stored on your sd card. Sometimes backups made on different versions of cwm won't restore.

Cm9 Flashing Steps

I'm opening this so someone can probably be so kind as to write the CLEANEST was/steps to flash cm9 I'm sure many of want to try it, I would have wrote them myself but I don't know them, and I have to get ready for orientation with my new job

Here's a preview build now that my source tree is mostly sorted out: http://www.mediafire.com/?1nhagihfoqqpkf3
To flash, you must first flash this recovery: http://www.mediafire.com/?2000k5y512spft4
Then boot into recovery, wipe data/cache, go to mounts and storage and format system, then flash the rom. Gapps are here: http://goo.im/gapps/gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip . You'll probably have to mount system manually under mounts and storage before flashing gapps.
I've only tested this using gingerbread bootloaders, no idea if it works using froyo bootloaders. If you don't want to deal with the caveats of gb bootloaders, then well, fix it yourself.
what works:
radio (calls/sms/data)
touchscreen
audio
wifi
sensors
hw acceleration
software and hardware video decoding
data usage monitor (for wifi at least)
what doesn't work:
camera/camcorder
bluetooth
anything else is either broken or completely untested.

So if I'm already on ZTR (GB Bootloaders I'm guessing) I jus follow the basic steps, correct? Just trying to get a clean flash and thank you

for some reason with all my phones ive never been aware of my bootloaders... i think its because i just flash cm and never look back,
so if i flashed cm7 right after rooting (now on miui) would i be on GB as well? is there a quick way to check.

Therez no way to check bro. Same spot as you. When i home from school, ill try flashing. But just try flashing with froyo bootloaders, it may work. If it doesnt, then odin back to stock.
Successfully got everything up and running. Great ROM for a first release.
Anyone else have a jacked up recovery? Crazy colors and only half the screen visible? Any way to fix that? It's still functional, just hard to tell what you're doing.
Camera and bt dont eork . Im going to wait for fixes.. Im super happy.

If you'll go to the inspire 4g thread and pull the abso camera from the collective build , all 3 apks, it works. All credit to flappjax and team collective...

i think it has to so with the sdcard not mounting, if i use root explorer i can access all of my files, but the os natively won't see it

I think you're right, the first time I flashed i had the rainbow and i was on froyo bootloaders, after restore to GB it came up fine.
Prior to flashing CM9 I had just Heimdalled back to AT&T UCBL3, so I'm not sure why I wouldn't have GB bootloaders...

How long did it take you all to get off of the initial Samsung logo at start up to the cm9 boot animation after flashing? It has been roughly 10 minutes so far and it hasn't moved. My recovery is all screwed up with funny colors, but it's nice to know that others have encountered the weird recovery as well... was on Devestion before following the steps for flashing cm9.

[Q] Camera has stopped, Help?

Hi a week ago from today i got the ATT USA samsung galaxy s3. I rooted it last weekend and yesterday i wanted to be able to use the volume button as a shutter button. I searched this up and found this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844374 im pretty sure i did it wrong because i didn't read the entire post and couldn't find exactly how to. I'm new to all of the android stuff (i previously has an iphone). So idk about the ROMs and other terminology. Bassically what i did was downloaded the zip from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1844374 to my phone. I then turned it off, held the power button, home and volume up. i hit install from zip and installed the file from that link. Idk if i was supposed to or not. Now i cannot use camera. Everytime i click camera nothing happens and it just pops up with "unfotunatly camera has stopped." It also made it say "android upgrading applications started" everytime it turns on. I need to know what to do next please and make it simple if possible. Thanks in advance.
Was your phone upgraded to jellybean yet or still on ice cream sandwich?

It says android version 4.0.4
Damn, we'll it looks liked you tried to flash a jellybean camera on ice cream sandwich. Try searching the at&t Samsung galaxy s3 forum for a camera app and try installing that over what you got. I got to wake up for work in 5 hours otherwise I'd try to find it for you.
Worse case scenario go to the forum I said above and find the ariel rom and flash that.
All you would do is download the rom which will be a .zip file. You go into the recovery like you did before.
***Make a backup first by going to backup/restore and clicking backup.*** Once that's done you format data format cache go into mount and click format /system then go to advanced and format dalvik cache and then go to install update and select the ariel. Zip you downloaded. Ariel is a very stable ics rom. I used it for months. It's basically the same thing as the stock att gs3 but without the bullcrap bloat.

I searched for the camera and couldn't quiet find it, or know exactly what to look for. Would it be possible for me to just upgrade to jellybean now before i do anything else or what and if so how
I mean... It's a possibility you could do the ota update of jellybean (the normal att update) I personally would be afraid to try since you're rooted and have change system files by flashing that... Idk I wish someone else would jump in and and would confirm or deny that because I'm not 100% sure.
Personally I would just flash a custom rom anyway. I'm running the customized "stock" jb rom someone posted in the forum. It's running great and you can flash stuff like the one you originally tried without issue.

I personally would. I'd flash either the ariel rom which is ice cream sandwich. It's very stable with great battery life. Or the new jelly bean rom by enewman17
I've been using that one since last night and it's been running great so far. I was at work all day and I'm at 82% battery life with like 9 hours being on. If you have a microsd card in your phone you should put your data (pictures, music, etc.) on it anyway but you will basically lose all the apps and stuff. So put any data you want to save on your sd and use the instructions I said before to flash properly.

alright well i don't have an external sd-card but ill probably get one soon. I'll save those instructions and do it later so i dont have to worry about losing my apps and having to redownload them. Thanks for all of you help
Don't worry about losing your apps. Your Google account will always save them. And the instructions are the same no matter what rom your flashing. So don't worry. You'll pick it up quick
If you need help just let me know.
