[GUIDE] Jellybean, Flash, and Dolphin Browser with pinch zoom working - Android General

Not certain if this is the only way to get the latest versions of Dolphin Browser, Adobe Flash Player and Jellybean to play nice together, but this is a method that worked for me.
With this method I believe that you will have to choose between an unchangeable "Always On" or "On Demand" in Dolphin, because I think the software only limits your ability to make changes to the Flash setting, and since the default is normally Off when one downloads from the play store, normally one can't activate Flash without getting the slap on the hand "you can't do that" from Dolphin. The trick here is to save a copy of the Dolphin ICS settings which allow Flash use and then restore those on JB.
This is how it worked for me.
You need:
1. A device running ICS which probably needs to be rooted.
2. Your device running Jellybean which probably needs to be rooted.
3. Titanium backup on both device
4. A version of the Flash Player apk to side load which you can download (they are still available if you Google search) or a Titanium backed up version that you already made.
Turn off automatic backup from your Google account on your JB device.
On your ICS device install Titanium backup and Dolphin from the market. Open Dolphin, go to settings and turn on Flash content. Exit Dolphin. Open Titanium backup and make a backup of Dolphin and Flash player if that is how you will be getting Flash. Now you need to copy those backup files to your Jellybean device. There are several ways to do so which I won't cover here.
On your Jellybean device uninstall any copies of Dolphin and Flash you may already have on there. You can backup your bookmarks first if you wish but can't do a full backup and restore of all your settings because they will overwrite what we are going to do. Now, with a clean Jellybean, install titanium backup from the market if you don't already have it. Open titanium backup and find that dolphin backup you moved from the ICS device. Restore the app and data. Open Dolphin and go to settings and see that Flash is enabled but don't touch the toggle. Close Dolphin. Now either restore the Flash app in Titanium, or install it from an apk you found on the net
That's it.
Open Dolphin and you should now be able to use Flash, and pinch zoom.
If it was me I would never touch the flash toggle in Dolphin, and I wouldn't let Dolphin update either until we know the newer versions will work as well.
Your mileage may vary, but this worked for me. "Thanks" are appreciated if this works for you.
Good luck and please excuse any typos or mistakes as I was typing this in the car as my daughter was driving (scary)
UPDATE: This method works for Dolphin Beta Browser as well which has improved HTML5 compatibility.
UPDATE See post 3 and post 4 below for possible other methods to get it working without Titanium backup.
As gjc found, deleting the file /data/data/com.dolphin.browser.lab.en/shared_prefs/com.dolphin.browser.lab.en_preferences.xml may allow Dolphin Beta Browser to regenerate the file setting Flash to "On Demand"
As I found below, deleting the file data/data/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser/shared_prefs/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser_preferences.xml may allow the normal Dolphin Browser to regenerate the file setting Flash to "Always On"
So basically, this has allowed me to use Dolphin Browser to browse with Always On and Dolphin Beta Browser for when I wish to browse with the setting "On Demand" which, if not the best of all worlds, at least allows us to use Flash as we see fit.
Some testing and confirmation from others would be nice on these methods as what works for us may not necessarily work for you.

There must be something in the Dolphin program data that is telling it whether or not to allow flash. If we could find that than maybe we will only need to modify a single file. Until then thanks for confirming it works from Titanium.

The setting is in:
/data/data/com.dolphin.browser.lab.en/shared_prefs/com.dolphin.browser.lab.en_preferences.xml
I have tried changing this but dolphin changes it back
Edit: However, if you delete this file and then reopen dolphin, it recreates the file with the setting at 'on demand'

Cool. So if one only wants "On demand" one can use that method and if one wants "always on" one can use the original method.
I've noticed that with a lot of sites, particularly those that use Flowplayer, the "on demand" feature doesn't work so lately I have just kept it on "always on" since with a combo of Adaway and the new speed of JB pages aren't loading slowly as much anymore and that way every page seems to mostly work.
Thanks for the additional info! Do you mind if I add it to the OP giving you credit?
Update Hmmm. Tried deleting that file and it still stayed at Always on for me. So I uninstalled both Dolphin and Dolphin beta. Rebooted. Then Reinstalled Dolphin. Went to settings and it showed Flash as off. I then went to go delete the file and the com.dolphin.browser.lab.en is no longer there???
Update again. Figured out what is happening. The files you referred to are actually for the Dolphin Beta Browser. When installed that (had to side load because it is not available in the playstore for my JB device) then those files showed up. I was able to replicate that deleting that xml file caused the Dolphin Beta Browser to go from No Flash to On Demand.
Not sure where the equivalent files are located for the normal Dolphin Browser though.
3rd Update Found it! For the normal Dolphin Browser that you can download from the playstore right now, the file that needs to be deleted is:
data/data/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser/shared_prefs/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser_preferences.xml
When I deleted this and restarted Dolphin Browser then it went from "Off" to "Always On"
Weird that it is different from the Beta browser, but that is what happened for me.
Anyone else want to test this out?

Confirmed working!
At first I tried renaming the file and it would just change the file name back. Downloaded the one from the play store. Thanks for the tip!

Hmm.
Not sure if it rom, phoine or method related because I just went to ESPN.com and the front page lets you watch live TV and it works fine on my transformer prime on Dolphin Browser on Baked JB Rom.
Maybe try my first method rather than the xml file delete method?

Can you give me a specific site you are going to in which it doesn't work, and the rom and device you are using?

I'm all little confused you say in the OP 'You can backup your bookmarks first if you wish but can't do a full backup and restore of all your settings because they will overwrite what we are going to do'
How would you back up bookmarks without a full backup and restore? I thought that was the only way.

The latest update to Dolphin Browser (regular, 8.8.1) prompts on start up after deleting the xml that flash cannot be used.
The Beta still switched to on demand though, which isn't bad.
Edit:
Deleting it then doing a restart on the phone seems to have done the trick and did not prompt me that Flash is not supported.

Not to downplay the OP but I was able to install these Apk's successfully on my unrooted Nexus 7. I just went to the Play Store, downloaded 'Apk installer app. Then after download in dolphin 8.5.1apk and the Adobe Flash ICS apk, I then used the Apk installer app to install both applications. Almost forgot, I did check off the Unknown sources tab under settings > security > device administration > unknown sources. Thank you for posting all the apk files. They were very helpful! I now love my Nexus even more!

It seems i cannot find the folder or file:
data/data/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser/shared_prefs/mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser_preferences.xml
i am using dolphin 8.8.1 any1 having same problems?

I use the same version , can delete the file , after reopen browser its regenerate - see the date of attached XML. Under the settings flash always on , but freeze the dolphin with flash . For example WWW.budacash.hu

I Found the answer to all our problems it seems... no special steps todo...
Step 1 install the latest flashplayer http://d-h.st/7Ds
Step 2 Go to the play store and install firefox (yes firefox..)
Step 3 go to the Settings and set plug-ins: 'On'
after doing this i just went for a test to the above named link budacash and it worked perfectly..
Can anyone confirm my founds?

I have no time to check now. Later will. please check one more site:
If everything fine u should see a sheet with currencies and the rate of it changing sec by seconds.
Thx.

2.GPS still sucks for some
3.Silent mode does not silent notifactions
4.Cannot download attachments in Gmail

6.Under Exchange e-mail
1.Cannot download attachments
2.Forwarding an e-mail deletes your message and only send original message
3.Cannot scroll through folders, bounces back
4.cannot forward if there is an attachment in the original e-mail
5.The good news, to fix exchange e-mail, follow this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8453938&postcount=99
6.Note doing the above fix will eliminate the ability to move the e-mail from one folder to nother
7.MMS does not work, cannot receive pictures
8.If you select a contact from a group, it shows a different person, works on gmail and exchange accounts
9.Market does not show protected paid apps, however to fix market apps, follow this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...&postcount=102
10.Contacts do not always import correctly (joins some and not others)
11.Cannot hear a call over the aux port, must use bluetooth or speaker

13.3G is slower for some?
14. PHONE CAN'T UNLOCK! - That pisses me off! This should be priority number one for the DEVS : )
15. My browser sees to restrict the file types I want too download. I can't download cognition Roms and some other file types to my phone. Anyone else?

Under SETTINGS>SOUND>VOICECALL RINGTONE or NOTIFICATION RINGTONE
If either of those are pressed I get process "com.android.settings has stopped unexpectedly" anyone know how to correct this? Normally I would run fix permissions under clockwork MOD, but that is not working either.

I don't have that issue. Don't tell me you restored things with Titanium Backup...
I think your is an isolated incident. I personally do not have that problem.. Maybe you deleted something by accident?
How did you install Froyo? Did you do a clean flash or did you flash over something else?
I odin 1-clicked back to jh6... then master cleared... formatted SD.. then flashed froyo and I'm not having any problems at all
I don't have that problem either
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897
I also don't have this issue... I was able to set my ringtone with no problem. So far, I've had no issues with this rom at all aside from the minor lag problems here and there, which obviously is a common problem thanks to Twiz...
Didn't restore using TIBU
Hmmm.
I must have deleted something when removing ATT Bloatware..is there a list of the exact APK's for the Bloatware I can bounce off?
FIXED.. Do not delete MEDIAPROVIDER.apk
That was my mistake.
I can set my final ringtone to anything, but individual ringtones are limited to 300kb? Wtf!

I think that spelling will be fixed in future versions. I suspect this is left over from the European SGS 9000 build.

Is ClockworkMod/Rom Manager even usable under this build of Froyo? I have Rom Manager installed, but if I try to boot into Clockwork Recovery I get errors. I was under the impression that it would have to be updated to work with the Captivate Froyo build since the built in option for Galaxy S Captivate in Rom Manager seems to be specifically for Eclair.
For the record, I'm still learning some of this stuff, but I was running Cognition 2.1.6 with the Voodoo kernel. I flashed back to stock using odin 1 click and then flashed using the Froyo Odin download. Somehow in the process I lost all of my Titanium backup data for my apps, but no biggie. I also followed the steps to root and enable sideloading.
Address book is kind of screwy. I have some pre-defined groups that I set up in GMail contacts via the web. They cam eover to the phone when Google synced, but when I click on a contact I get a different one form the one I clicked. This doesn't happen in contacts moved over to "Phone" and put into those groups.

How would we backup the ROM?!

You can flash the Eclair kernel with Odin, go straight from there to recovery mode and reinstall packages (provided the ClockworkMod update.zip is in place) and do a nandroid backup when you get into ClockworkMod. Then go from there back into download mode and flash the Froyo kernel. Yes, that solution is pretty stupid. But that's all I can think of.
Like the previous unreleased firmwares, JI6 suffers from missing market apps issue. The best way to demonstrate this is to search for Fandango in Market. On JH7, the link to the market page shows up, while on JI6, there is a message saying not found. I solved that issue by editing the fingerprint section in the build.prop file and replaced 2.2 with 2.1-update1, FROYO with ECLAIR and JH7 with JF6, so it reads like this:
Code:
# Do not try to parse ro.build.description or .fingerprint
ro.build.description=SGH-I897-user 2.1-update1 ECLAIR UCJH7 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=Samsung/SGH-I897/SGH-I897/SGH-I897:2.1-update1/ECLAIR/UCJH7:user/release-keys
I rebooted, and Fandango (as well as other missing apps) show up again. Strangely there are apps marked for Froyo that seem to not have disappeared. Were the Froyo apps always visible with JH7? Am I missing any other apps in the market now because I am pretending to be on an Eclair firmware? The issues of editing the fingerprints before were simply a matter of changing the firmware name. Now by having edited the build version, am I creating any other unforeseen issues?
I get a fc when trying to save a image from browser, anyone else?
The only real issue that I've noticed...and It's not really anything broken...is that when I receive a call and slide the bar to answer, it always hangs when sliding the bar for a second. Like I said, nothing broken, just a little annoying.

Flash for IE and Hulu app:

Looking for help/suggestions and hope this isn't a repeat post. After I install a custom rom, I install the Hulu app. The app will not work unless I first delete Flash player using the Titanium Backup program; after a reboot, I install the flash-hex-edited.apk, then the Hulu app works, however, flash will then not work on the internet browser, whether it be Dolphin or the stock one. Any ideas on how to get Flash working in the browsers and also be able to run the Hulu app?
It does have it's own thread, but... I believe you need to go into the stock browser and type about:debug in the address bar. Once you type that in and hit enter, press menu and then go to settings>UAstring and set it to desktop.
So I installed Calkulin's latest rom, so if I uninstall/delete the current Flash Player through Titanium backup, reboot, then apply the "fix" to get Hulu app working, I can then do what you suggested with the stock browser to get flash working?

[Q] Deleted all web browsers on android

I deleted the default browser from my lg optimus m for metropcs after root. thought i had a back up for the root, but didn't, and restored to factory settings, now i don't have any web browser at all, and android market does not work. it starts downloading an app, and goes to 100%, afterwards the application crashes and there is nothing on the phone and nothing in downloading list anymore..it just vanishes.. also, i have gmail on the phone but it does not show any new mail. although it does go the inbox...Navigation does not work either.is this because i do not have a web browser? youtube does work.
I tried downloading web browser on the sd card from another phone and putting it on my phone, but i cannot see it at all.
What can i do to to put a web browser without using the market? and once i do get a browser will this fix all the other stuff?
I didn't really delete anything after root other than bloatware.

I did the same thing....easiest thing to do is remove all you root info, super user and any other things that were not on the phone. take it back to metro and have them replace it. say that you were just on the phone with someone the phone turned off and now you are missing apps. they replaced mine with no issues. or you can find the LGNPST 1.2 store model and both the LGNPST components 5.0.12.0 and generics 5.0.10.0 restore your phone. you will also need the files to reload the stock software.....
You could pull the browser.apk from another rom and push it to the phone in adb or make a flashable zip or just reflash the rom.

Defender 2 game backup/restore

Hi Everyone.
Im having some trouble with restoring Defender2 game data.
When i restore the game using Titanium backup or Mybackup initially it says its OK, Shows the correct stage achieved and such, but when im going to start a new stage, all data is gone, and i have to start from scratch. And that kinda sucks.
Is there some new high tech security to this app? Its the first time ive encountered this problem.
Tried with Froyo, Gingerbread and ICS. Same result.
I know there is hacks for this game, but that ruins it, and i dont wanna do that.
I couldnt find any other thread about this issue so i hope i dont doublepost.
I had the same issue. Thankfully I was only 50 stages in. Hopefully I won't have to do another wipe anytime soon.
Same issue here at lvl 145. No luck at all...
I have already tried backup/restore through Titanium Backup, MyBackup, extracting from Nandroid backup with Titanium Backup PRO, manually (copy/paste data files with rootexplorer) but nothing worked...
I would really appreciate if someone could help.
Oh, btw I have the same issue with Fish Predator and Battleloot Adventures.
Same problem here, at lvl 205, im really curios about this topic, i hope someone will help us, until that day i stopped playing defender 2. I cant start from the beginning

Same here!
I was at level 79 on stage 550...
I played only 20 days I was at level 70. I can not find the solution.
Same here.. I went from CM9 to a 'stock' ATT rom for my Galaxy S2 and have the same problem.
Ive tried using my old save file and changing the device id to the new one, but everytime I start it does the same thing. Shows me the current level/battle but when I hit the start button, Im back at level 1 with all my stats reset.
Been trying to get this working for two days now but theres nothing left I can think of to try.
Still works if I restore my nandroid of CM9 but I really wanted to use this new rom!! This is literally the only game I have that has this problem all because of some stupid device id code. Every other game I have all the data is in place and work just fine..
Has anyone figured out yet how to properly restore your save/game data with defender 2? I've tried Mybackuppro, Spritebackup and some other backup apps but I keep starting off at lvl 1.
Anyone has a solution/suggestion for this?
Thx in advance,
Frank
Anyone have any luck with this? I am having to send my phone in for repaid and have saved the Droidhen folder.
Does this mean it wont restore my level?
It's going to be awful to start all over again.
I have seen the latest tit.backup can save and/or modify the android id... maybe we can use this option to restore the old id,then restore the backup..
At the moment the game is not instaled on my phone, so it could be great if anyone would test it

Use your favorite root explorer (I used ES File Explorer).
Then go to : /data/data/com.droidhen.defender2/shared_prefs.
Copy file save3.xml and save it to another directory for backup.

I came from gb235 to gb236 then to ICS4 and have no problem using that procedure. The device id you're mentioning has no significance. Nor what defender2 version your in. If you just save the file save3.xml without trying to change any settings thru text editor, it will work. Do not try to change your setting cause it will definitely reset back to Lvl-1. I always have problem when I mess with that stuff. If you still have the ORIGINAL (save3.xml) there is still a way to go back where you left off to the game. Follow these procedure: Assuming you have saved a clean file... Simply go to the complete motion of going back to lvl-1 and finished the tutorial stage and totally complete stage 1. Then you exit the game totally. Go to your setting/application/defender2. Clear cache. Then you retrieve the save3.xml and replace the file on shared_prefs folder. Go back to the game and check. If you are still on lvl 1 then you need to clear data and clear cache again...going to the tutorial again and so on...

Why can't I find this folder path? nothing for droid hen under the Data folder.
I want to back up Fish Predator saved game data and put it on my replacement Nexus 7. The current one I have has screen lifting issue.
phone must be rooted.
Update - Here is what I did.
- My phone is rooted. This is the only way this method works.
- I downloaded an app from Google Play called "Root Browser" (free version works fine). Root Browser is a file manager and text editor for rooted phones.
- I installed Root Browser on the old phone (that has the Defender 2 files) and also the new phone (that I wanted to "restore" my game play from the old phone).
- Opened Root Browser on the old phone and went into the Defender 2 folder.
Click and go into the following folders:
data
data
data (on my phone I had three layers of "data" folders. Your phone may be different)
com.droidhen.defender2
shared_prefs
There should be a file named "save3.xml"
Do NOT click the xml file, that will open the editor.
Long press save3.xml
Root Browser menu will pop up.
Select "copy"
File will automatically be placed into the apps clipboard and a "paste" icon will appear.
Click the up arrow and paste the save3.xml file to your microSD card.
Close Root Browser and power down phone.
Remove microSD card containing save3.xml file.
Place microSD card into powered-off phone to which you want to install the save3.xml file into the Defender 2 game.
Power on the new phone.
Open Root Browser.
Open the microSD directory and long press the save3.xml file. Press copy.
Open the Defender 2 folder (see above) to where you see the game's save3.xml file.
Press Root Browser's paste icon. When it says "overwrite" say "Yes."
Back out of and close Root Browser.
Open Defender 2 game. Where you were in the old phone's game should now be where you are in the new phone's game.

Copy / Paste not working

Recently my copy / paste function won't work. When I try to copy text in Chrome, the stock browser or Evernote the app crashes. When in Gmail, stock email app or any other app I can copy but when I go to paste the option to paste doesn't appear. Anyone else experience this? I have a 8013 stock, not rooted.
Thanks!

I'm having the exact same problem. Mine is the 8010 stock not rooted. At first i thought it was because i use Swype. I took Swype off and then i purchased Swift Key for Tablets and still didn't work. I then went to the stock keyboard and same result.
I looked at various foroums and google search and no clear answer to be honest.

I'm not sure, but probably your problem is related with the notorious and infamous clipboard bug.
Here, here and here there's some more info.
did you try clearing the cache as all that you copy is stored in memory and never deleted so maybe it is full and causing the error

Looks like you've hit the nail on the head. Sucks there is no way to fix without a factory reset or rooting. I may try flashing the German JB ROM and see if that wipes the cache clear.
If it were just a cache issue, we'd try to wipe it by using the option included in the bootloader menu......
Was just thinking a cache may work as a stack...... and a stack should abide by the FIFO rule..... if so, it's pretty much unlikely to be full at all.....
Quick update. I used the Exyonus exploit app to root the device. Using Root Explorer I cleared everything in the data/clipboard folder, went back to the exploit app to unroot and the copy / paste function is back and my settings show a stock "normal" device. Took less than 5 minutes and worked like a charm.
