MHL Adaptor Charging Issues (500MaH Max) - HTC Sensation

Morning All,
Having a problem with charging via MHL adaptor - I have my phone connected via MHL to a Pioneer AppRadio2. Getting the error message saying the phone is drawing more current than the charger can provide, so over a long journey - the charge drops significantly.
I have done some research and found when using and MHL adaptor, the phone sees it as charging via USB which has a max draw of 500MaH. I am currently using a 2amp charger but the phone cannot draw this current due to its own software limitation. It is possible to bridge (short) the 2 USB wires in the cable (data in/out) to trick the device into thinking it is a AC charger. Unfortunately this is not a suitable solution because the 2 USB wires are used to transfer data to the MHL adaptor.
I have found some kernels remove this limitation, or make the phone think all chargers are AC chargers. Does anyone know how which kernel can do this and would be compatible with Android Revolution 6.6.7 (current ROM). Important thing is that video out still works, and also that the phone actually charges!
Any help would really be appreciated!

Modified Faux kernel has this, you can find it here. I'm quite satisfied with it.
There are probably other kernels that have this, Bricked perhaps, but I'm not using them so I can't confirm

[Q] TF Charging Indicator?

Sorry if this has already been asked and answered - the XDA Search has been down for the past couple of hours and I just want to be sure I'm not missing anything here..
From what I can see in the reviews, the TF does *not* have any sort of charging indicator / LED on it - correct? I read that there will be one on the keyboard dock - but there is not one on the tablet.
So what are you guys doing? Just plugging it in and letting it sit overnight to give it its full charge - and then going by the battery indicator when you turn it on?
I've got my new TF sitting next to me here, and I'm trying to be a good dad to it by charging it up first before using it - but not having any sort of an indicator on it - I have no idea if it's doing anything or not!!!
Screw it - I think I"m gonna unplug it and start futzing it with it! Battery be damned!!
btw - damn this charge cable is SHORT!!
No charging LED that I can see on mine, and yea, I hate this stupid charging cable, guess you can always get a USB extension cable.

Monoprice has the USB 3.0 extension cables, but they won't be in stock until tomorrow (their estimate). When they are back in stock, a 6ft extension will run you about $7-$8 shipped.
I plan to order a few cables from Monoprice with a mini hdmi to hdmi cable.
Does it need to be usb 3.0 or will usb 2.0 do the trick ?

USB 2 cables don't supply enough power.
It will charge, but I think it has to be off and it'd be really slow going.
But usb 2.0 extension cable will work fine with the supplied charger? Also would you not require a usb 2.0 to usb 3.0 converter ?
Asus really overlook the inclusion of an charging indicator. Or, they are trying to make more $$$ on the keyboard/dock?

Has anyone got some definitve experience on USB2 vs USB3 for charging and/or with an extension cable. The whole charging process and adaptor are making me a little nervous in general.
there is no reason to invest in USB 3 gear when all you really need is higher amperage, wich you often get from stand-alone chargers like the one supplied or you can buy in stores (just check that the output is 1000mah or more, 2000 mah is desired for effective charging).
The reason you might want to use a usb 3 PORT (cable makes no diffrence) is that usb 3 deliver more juice then usb 2, but unless it is a dedicated charger port that can supply 2000mah+ charge the port still require you to have the pad either off or stand by and even then charging will take ages.
Consider this, the supplied charger delivers 2000mah on 5v and my HTC charger to my phone has 1000mah @ 5v. Compared to the standard 550mah on a singel non-charger adapted USB port on a computer.
The TF charger output at 15V @ 1.2A with using the supplied USB3.0 cable. If you use a USB2.0 extension cable, it will drop the charging voltage down to 5V. You will need a USB3.0 extension cable

There's a thread about this issue here. Several USB 3.0 cables have been found to work, but not for everyone. I have this one that I received today. It charged both the tab and the dock with the wall charger. I've also got a Tripp Lite that's worked for others on the way in the case the other didn't work.
it has to be USB 3.0 extension since the tablet recognizes the extra pin which is what lets it charge at the full rate.

Not quite correct. The charger senses a gnd connection on pin 7 of the USB 3.0 connector and delivers 15V @2a to the TF and or Dock. There are only 4 conductors in a USB 2.0 Cable. so the charger only delivers 5V as it does not see the gnd on pin 7. For all the technical details see the thread started by DevCake where the voltages and currents have actually been measured. A 5V 20A charger will not be as good as one with 11-15V at about 2A as the charger is not a constant current charger but a power source for a charge controller ( controlling the current) in the TF.
I appreciate that it is a slightly older thread and not sure if what I'm about to post is already known by TF owners but here goes anyway.
The discussion has moved on to cables but the threqad title is about a charging indicator. I've discovered that the battery icon in the bottom RH corner has a lightning symbol through it when it is being charged.
Sorry if it's old news but I've only had my TF one week and thought other users might not be aware
Really wish they would have put in a fancy multicolor LED somewhere on the housing but we can't win them all. Even the Nook Color had an LED on the cable itself.

[TUT]Fast Charging via USB port MOD

Anyone wanting to know how to fast charge using the usb port on your pc/laptop?
This usually takes ages compared to charging via mains lead, the hack itself is quite simple and involves modifying the usb cable
my results are as follows (these can vary depending on what you are using your phone for, what background apps running, etc.
charging with mains lead :
4.2v
998mah
mains ac
charging with STANDARD usb lead:
422mah
3.999v
standard usb
and finally the MODIFIED usb lead hack:
4.161v
782mah
usb hack
as you can see it is a 53% increase in charging compared to standard usb charging mah, and slightly under mains ac charging mah,
as my phone is always plugged in at my work pc or home pc or laptop or whatever this works out good
TUT:
use at your own risk this is for information purposes only and I hold no responsibility to any damage that may arise
using a micro usb cable (charging cable for htc phones)
cut it using a pliers half way through the cable
using pliers again cut away the thick black wiring, the red and black small wiring, and white and green wiring
from the usb port end to the microusb connect the black and red cables together so they join
from the microusb end short out the white and green cables together
from the usb port end leave the white and green cables, do not touch these
use insulation tape/solder to clean it up and then your cable is ready
I will make a mod for car chargers also soon
see attached image showing which wires to cut and which to join up and which to leave alone, if this helped you in anyway (it should help you ) then please hit the thanks button
this mod will trick your pc/laptop/htc into thinking that it is not a pc usb cable and will allow higher currents and voltage to your phone
you can check this with current widget from market place
once this mod is done, you cannot use the same cable again for pc/usb tethering or usb disk drive, only cable can be used for charging
Care to explain how you did it? I got a spare Micro USB cable willing to try and make a tutorial with pictures.

First of all im not against this mod. Just want to share my experience just this morning.
I charge my phone via the stock usb cable to my pc and leave until morning approx 7hrs. What happen now my phone Menu button become unresponsive tried different method, shake google for answer , but nothing work. Worst come to worse i may return the phone to HTC for repair. So for anyone want to try this be careful, this could be a problem with HTC as it could result more problem.

Sounds dangerous and a bit risky. Why not just use a USB y cable and a micro USB adapter?

I always thought the different voltages came from the charging adaptor..
The phone adaptors have normal charging voltages so thats why charge normal speed... however PCs have lesser voltage due to USB ports. I think the PC voltage varies on the device that's plugged in.
Thus, we can use the same cable for charging with an adaptor and also for data transfer and the phone knows what its plugged into.
Pardon me if i'm wrong... could be a misconception i had

It's got nothing to do with the voltages, they are the same. The phone senses that the data wires are not connected together (open) and presumes that it is plugged into a pc / laptop usb port. Because of this the phone then restricts the current it draws from it's source so that it doesn't cause damage to the pc / laptop usb power supply.
Inside the phone charger the data connections will be shorted out so the phone knows it's the charger and can draw full current.
There is a chance that it could damage the pc / laptop if the usb port supply is not rated high enough
Just to update the thread, I've been using this for the last year and a half on all the HTC's I own and no issue at all,
I can connect my phone to my laptop if i dont have access to mains
I can use the cable in the car to a usb charger (which charge slow for some reason)
there are many reasons i.e. in work where I can only use a usb port and no extra plugs for a/c, it means I don't have to carry a plug around with me just a usb cable,
A good post, the issues around drawing to much power could effect older laptops
If I understand correctlly USB3 has the ability to supply more power than USB 2

you should place a 220 Ohm resistor between the data lines (green and white) if you do that, you will be able to use the where it was intended for, data
with the 200~220 Ohm resistor the phone recognizes the connection as AC-charger. i dit this with a DealExtreme carcharger

If you can get to the ID-pin of the USB-connector (pin4) and connect the following resistors to GND, you get interesting USB modes
Dock-mode = 44-49 kOhms
Car-dock = 5-16 kOhms

I've done this, and soldered all the cables in the right positions, now I'm testing the charge times between this and a normal usb cable on my HTC G1.
First thing I noticed was that my phone says charging via AC, instead of usb.
Will edit this with the results.
Edit : Been a while, forgot about this, so I forget the exact numbers, but my phone charged around 1 and half hours faster with this mod, and yes, it was on USB 3.0 so its quite good.
Worthless to try if you don't have USB 3.0.

usb3 provides up to 900ma
so usb3 should work without any problems

I have an Notebook with USB3.0 and also Power-USB. (Power usb only works with a dockingstation).
The charging is also bad. Takes about ~4 hours from 2% - 100%.
I thought about power reducement by phone, when dataconnection is available. Now I know it for sure :-/

[Q] USB fast charging for Nexus?

Hello everyone, I just have a question in regards to USB fast charging for the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm about to install a JVC head unit in my car (model KD-R810) and it proclaims to have 500ma available for charging Apple devices. My fear from my research is this will not be enough power to charge my Nexus while using GPS, so I am looking into other methods.
What I am thinking to do is use a Sirius car charger that is no longer needed (that puts out 5v 2a charging capability) and use this to keep the phone charged.
Now my question is, if I have the data portion of the USB cable connected to the above mentioned car stereo head unit and the power portion of the USB cable connected to the Sirius charger, can anyone suggest any reason why this is not a good idea?
Also, will I need to trick my nexus into charging "AC" rather than "USB" even while connected to a USB charger that can supply 2a?
I've read articles about having to short the data lines on a USB to get it to charge in AC..?
I am wondering if doing something like this is needed? I currently have a rocketfish charger rated at 600ma that charges the nexus in "AC" mode, however I'm wondering if having 2a available using the Sirius charger will charge the phone that much faster, or if this is dangerous for some reason? I did read somewhere that the nexus will only draw as much power as needed and should be safe with higher rated chargers, however I wish to confirm before risking frying anything.
So my question is, if I wanted to use my Nexus with GPS and with my above mentioned JVC stereo as a storage place for music, would I benefit from using a hacked cable on a switch for example to be able to switch between GPS charging mode and "Data" mode for use with the head unit?
Perhaps a switch for the data portion of the USB to switch between going to the headunit and being shorted for fast charging?
Any guidance would be appreciated!
There is a kernel patch know as Fast-charging. It's implemented in Matr1x and air kernel i believe. This should do the trick.
Sorry i didn't see this before, don't know how i missed it. Here is the rundown:
-Data mode uses 500mA
-AC mode exceeds this, stock charger rated at 750mA
-Excess amperage should be limited by the Nexus S with no problem
-FastCharge forces AC mode, so the phone will attempt to draw the max current it can handle. NO DATA TRANSFER is available in this mode, so can't use it as a USB for your deck
Essentially, i would be using a kernel with FastCharge with the 2A charger and get the Nexus S to decode and output music through a 3.5mm jack to the AUX input on the deck. I hear it can get quite hot while charging and using GPS, so make sure to check it's heat every so often just in case. Decoding music will put practically no extra strain in comparison to everything else it'll be doing, it won't slow the charging by any noticable amount.
Heat can be a problem when using GPS and charging at a high current, my NS gets hot doing these two things at same time!
Try putting the device near a cold air flow inside the car.

TF700 charger/cable requirements?

I was planning on using my iPad charger to charge my phone, iPad, and TF700 while on the road. It puts out more than enough current at +5 volts but doesn't work with the TF700. The Asus charger outputs +15 and +5 and works with the Asus cable and an OEM cable, and also works charging my phone using a micro-B cable. Is the TF700 charged using +15 volts?
The TF700 booklet says it can be charged from a USB port, which is +5 volts. While that may be an impossible task on a PC, it still means that the TF700 can be charged using a USB cable and +5 volt charger. Why doesn't it work? Has anyone gotten a 2A +5V OEM charger to work with the TF700? Is there a pinout diagram for the Asus cable and charger anywhere? Thanks.

It's also possible your Apple charger usb port is pinned to only work with "apple approved" products? Have you been able to charge other devices from it?

I don't have a dock nor am I trying to charge the TF700 from a PC USB port. The Apple charger puts out +5 volts to anything plugged into to it and the TF700 apparently "knows" when the Apple charger is connected to it because it turns on if it's off.

It will charge VERY SLOWLY on 5v USB while turned off. Will not charge via 5v USB while on. The TF700 requires at least 12V/2A to charge while on. 15V/1.2A is what's recommended by Asus (based on their proprietary charger specs).
Here's a battery I use to charge my TF700 while on the go, and it also charges my phone, BT headsets and other devices. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1796750. Great battery, I highly recommend it.

You are correct. With the TF700 turned off, an hour of charging with the 2A Apple charger had increased the battery level from 29% to 34%. I expect the TF700 to be fully charged in only 14 hours!

Have you considered a power inverter? I use this one with my A100 though I use a FM transmitter to charge my phone.
Somewhat related to this: in the past, when using devices that have a power block with a USB port and a charge/sync cable, such as an iPod or even my Galaxy Nexus, I've used a USB extension cable to give me a little extra slack. For some reason, that doesn't seem to work with the Infinity. I've tried three different USB extension cables and the tablet never shows that it's charging. Is there a certain USB cable I can use for this?

I have that same exact charger. do you use the "I" or the "S" USB port?
I never knew what the difference between the two were

I ordered a pair of cables from eBay item # 320942102464. A house charger and a car charger. I just plugged in the dock and seems to be working fine.

Are you using a USB 2.0 or 3.0 extension cable? It's my understanding that the Infinity uses USB 3.0.
You need 15v to charge the Pad (I kept thinking 11, but the adapter says 5V or 15V output). This makes sense since there are more pins. Standard USB has 5v rails (ther are 4 pins, I 5v power, Data+, Data-, ground). Since our chargers are 40 pins, my assumption is that there are more pins dedicated to charging and multiple pins dedicated to data (possibly a few that are dedicated and some that are for whatever data is being passed through (assumption)). If the adapter is outputting 11v then it can send more power through the cord and multiple pins can push electricity through. When you are only pulling 5v (i.e. most AC->USB transformers) you will need a lot more time to charge, hence the trickle effect (and don't turn on the screen!)
It can be charged with 5v if the tablet is off.
There is a jumper in the USB cable itself that kicks the Asus charger into 15v mode so it doesnt accidentally fry your devices if you plug in, say, your cell phone to charge for a bit.
To make a custom cable just throw 15v across three pins in the connector (5v each). You can find all the info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633747
Yes, i know its for the prime, the connector is exactly the same, the pinouts SHOULD be identical.
DIY approach?
I've got a TF700T and a TF201 dock and a misplaced charger. I ran into the same trouble that a lot of people here did ....... generic chargers not working, USB on my computer only trickle charges the tablet, nothing for the dock, etc.......
After much poking around I learned that both require 12 volts to charge. That said I dug thru my junk and found a 2.2a 12v DC wallwart. I hacked apart a USB extension cable for it's female end, broke out my breadboard and put together a 12v USB connector... that after several days of charging and draining.... charging and draining .... works like a champ.
So to be a bit more specific, pin 1 that's normally 5+ volts I'm supplying 12+. Pin 4 is ground same as always and that's it. If you wish let me know I can probably throw up a little illustration or something.
Since I did that I've refined the whole thing a bit, cleaned it up, wired everything directly and heat shrinked the whole assembly.
It will charge both together or either one by itself in just hours EVEN while using them..... heavily. No overheating, no troubles.

I think the cable type might only matter after the ics.30 update when I was on the ics.26 I could use a standard extention cable, I had my device plugged in when I updated and my device stopped charging, and I freaked out thinking I broke something. But after finally removing the extention my tablet would charge. I have not tried to use the extention cable since so I don't know if it works with jb.

The Asus charger switches its output to 15V from 5V when a USB3 plug is detected. If you need an extesion cable to charge the Transformer, you'll have to use USB3 extension cable. If you want to use this charger on other devices, be sure to use a USB2 cable to not to fry it with 15V.

Thanks for the warning - I hope there are no cables with USB3 and micro-USB2 plugs though.

MHL whilst charging via dock pins

Hi,
I currently use my Xperia Z in my car with an App Radio 2 (with ARLiberator) everything is great about the setup, apart from the fact MHL does not charge at a high enough rate to maintain battery (it slowly dies), when running bluetooth, gps and music.
I have tried numerous fixes, from fast charge kernels to different chargers and mhl adaptors. Nothing can give me what I am after.
So my solution:
Similar to the quick charge mods seen here I would like to build a docking solution that allows me to charge via pogo pins but at the same time allows access to the micro usb/mhl port...
In theory this should work, however since mhl forces 'usb charging' speed when plugged into the micro usb port, will I still have the same issue or will the dock charging take priority and allow me to charge at higher (AC Charging) rate whilst also allowing MHL output?
n.b. obviously I still intend to power the mhl adapter via micro usb cable.
I will document how this goes here once I actually start building it.
Any input or help would be great!
