i know the usb ports on the dock supprt ntfs read/write but has anyone tried ntfs formatted microsd? i wont be able to check mine til i get home. but i would't see why it can't. it would be nice to store an 8 GB video file on the sdcard. even if the tf wouldn't be able to play it
i'm pretty sue clockwork won't get along with ntfs though.
where did you hear the dock supported NTFS? to my understanding linux can't read that so nothing on the device should be able to support NTFS.

Actually linux reads (and write) NTFS quite fine.
For NTFS support linux uses NTFS-3g (free) or Tuxera (commercial). The questions is - did Asus add NTFS drivers? Some users of Transformer say it did and that it works.

interesting. I just figured that since all the android devices have never supported NTFS, at least the ones i've owned.
if i had a blank SD card i'd try it for you, but all mine have way to much data on it to try.
If at least the USB ports work thats nice cause i can then move my HD movies onto a 32GB flash drive. instead of trying to somehow get them under 4GB.
Honeycomb does not have native NTFS support built into the kernel but there is a custom ROM available that has this feature quoted "The Transformer's first custom kernel with CIFS/TUN/NTFS compiled in"

I have no idea if this would help with the NTFS microSD access you asked about.
I just formatted to NTFS on a class 10 wintec 16gb microsd. Doesn't work. I'm on stock honeycomb.

Maybe the people that reported NTFS working used this kernel. I didn't pay attention to what they were writing much because am not using NTFS. But I was almost sure they were talking about a Transformer with stock firmware. Well aparently I was wrong, sorry for spreading misinformation.
ntfs formatted western digital passport does work very well on the usb port though....strange that microsd doesn't
At the time of my initial test i was using paul's rom from modaco. There wasn't any mention of ntfs support in the notes. Eifher i missed the note or he corgot to include the change.
Fyi archos tabets support ntfs read.
From what I read the NTFS support was add in the v1.2 release of that PRIME custom ROM. Maybe you were using an earlier version. The last edit of that forum post was "6th May 2011 at 12:55 AM" which I assume was when the new PRIME ROM v1.2 version was released.

Bump, trying to figure out if prime 1.3 will support NTFS SDCARD.
I am running Stock TF101 with 3.1 Android and the dock supports NTFS USB Media and Sd-Card NTFS Media very well.
So NTFS with any media that connects to the dock works, at least all i could get hold of these included some USB-Sticks from 512 MB to 8 GB and USB 3.0 2.5" 1TB HDD. Also SD-Cards and my microSD in an SD Adapter works.
But here comes the strange part if i remove the microSD out of the Adapter and put it into the tablet it won't work. Yes the same card that worked 10 seconds before in the dock.
For anyone that finds this thread in the future: The MicroSD card is expected to be FAT formatted and therefore, will not automatically mount if it is NTFS. But, since NTFS is supported on the tablet, you can manually mount the MicroSD and it will work fine when formatted as NTFS. You'll need root and someway to run the below commands.

I've tried entering the script in Terminal Emulator, but get
"Usage: mount [-r] [-w].... etc.."
This means there's something wrong with the code?
Found this thread through google search. I have a 32gb patriot class 10 micro sd card - just formatted to ntfs and android 3.2 reads it natively. Not yet rooted either.

You should be able to navigate into the actual directory:
/dev/block/vold/179 ...
If not, it might be elsewhere, slightly different location, like
/dev/block/vold/<another number?>
or
/dev/block/<another directory>/179
etc.
Once you find the actual flash directory it should be easy to mount to a known location. I am not rooted so I can not look on mine for differences.
What this implies... it might require a script or configuration to auto mount in any configuration. On LINUX this is handled a bunch of different ways depending on the kernel version, and likely similar on Android OS.

Confirmed! Same here I have 16GB ADATA class 10 microSDHC, NTFS formated. Works on my tablet not root just stock 3.2.

I have a couple of questions:
- Why is the transfer rate so slow when transferring files between computer and on to the SD card? It's like up to 2 MB/second.
- I used SDFormatter to format the card. The settings that I have used are Full Erase (Overwrite) and Flash Erase (OFF). When finished, I inserted the card and it's saying SD card damaged? I don't understand. Initially, I converted the file system from exFAT to FAT but the SDFormatter converted the file format back to exFAT.
Any help would be appreciated!

I used SDFormatter while the card was in the phone but didn't help.

Hi, Thanks for your prompt response - So, since now the partition is back as ex-FAT, I would have to convert to FAT and then format the card or would it convert to FAT when I format the card in recovery?

Uhm, little question at this occassion cause I only know about FAT12, FAT16 and FAT32 (called vfat by linux when combined with long file names) so far -- what is ex-FAT?
But apart from that: formatting means writing a new file system to a block device [at least nowadays, in earlier times it could also mean write a new sector geometry on a harddisk]. So, it doesn't matter what flavour the old filesystem was.

Some of the reading that I have done with regards to these new types of SD cards from Sandisk, ex-FAT file structure is what they come with and our mobile phones are not eqipped to handle this format so hence the need to convert it to FAT. Now what ex-FAT is, I'm not sure. I'm not at my PC so will have to do some more reading on that one.
Are you sure you actually have a 64gb class 10?
There are A LOT of fakes on ebay where they take a class 2 8gb card and put a class 10 64gb label on it. Most are good enough painted on labels that you cant tell.
They even partition the card with fake info so it says its got 64gb of space....though it fills up with 8gb.
Be very careful with those ebay cards.
Anyway, that might be the reason you are getting slow transfer speeds.

If you can, go for Toshiba, the last time i heard most of the card are made by Toshiba, the other brands just slap a sticker onto it.

Just wanted to add to this conversation, although you normally will not run into this format. Because of Windows Phone 7 on the HD2 I know about this. If the card is formated in a RAID format you will have do w low level format on the card first before you can format it fat anything. So yes rarely it does matter what "flavour" the old file system was. That it should be mentioned.

Well, I got it from a Top ebay seller so I was hoping it'd be genuine. The space on my card when I first formatted said 59gb free.
Please advise what should I do? I will let seller know and see what happens?

I have one other question. I have found Patition Wizard by MiniTool and if I create a partition on the card as EXT4, will our sensation recognize the card?
I have created a partition on the sd card as FAT32 but the phone is still not recognizing the card. arghhh!

Most probably you got a low classed sd card and also try formate from your phone using any compitable file manager or using the phones builtin system.
And to test your sd card, google for "h2testw" and test your memory card.

I can't format from my phone because it is not recognizing it and/or having issues with being mounted. Now, it's not even recognizing it when I put it in the adapter. The windows 7 format pop windows says 'Unavailable capacity'. I think it's ****ed Thanks, I'll search for the memory card tester.
Can someone please recommend me another one? 32/64GB. Maybe, I should get a 32GB since a lot of people are having issues with 64GB. The only reason I got 64 was that it was selling cheap. 32GB should be plenty for my needs.

I have tried using SDFormatter with the memory card reader but it always changed the file structure back to ex-FAT, which is not compatible on Sensation.

I have an original Samsung 64GB Class 10 sd-card with no issues. They was not cheap at all.
Things you can do is:
a low level format to be shure..
- tool: HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.25 - www.hddguru.com
- that is the tool i am using for all my memory device since years
set up a new partion and format the sd-card..
- tool: EASEUS Partition Master 9.1.0 Home Edition - Free for Home Users - www.partition-tool.com
- that tool can format every type and size

When this all is not working with your sd-card, then you have possiblea a fake card.
The low-level-format tool looks deeper then your windows property.
When you have a fake card the LLF tool will stop working after it has reached the max of sectors.
You could have got one from amazon thats what I did

I know the specifications list it as supporting up to a 32GB MicroSD but is it possible to use a 64GB MicroSD card in it?
I am doing it right now, but from what I've read searching on here it has to be formatted in a different device because for whatever reason the tab 2 won't reformat it on it's own, but once you've got the card formatted to fat32 (you need a special app to do it on windows) you should be good to go in the TAB.
Here is a command prompt formatter that worked for me.
1. Unzip the file to the root of C:\
2. Mount your 64GB card on your PC and take note of the allocated drive letter (e.g. e:\)
3. run command prompt on PC (search for cmd.exe)
4. get to c:\ (I think cd c:\ will do this)
5. type fat32format.exe e:\ and press <return>
(where e:\ is the allocated drive letter from step 2, so if it mounts as f:\ you would type fat32format.exe f:\ instead)
This should then format your card as FAT32 which works fine in my Galaxy SII so there's no reason I can think of why it wouldn't work in the Tab 2 too.
This is all at your own risk of course - I won't be responsible if something goes horribly wrong and you kill your card, PC, Tab or anything else...sorry.

Did you not read my post? I pulled the 64GB that I formatted in my SGP 4.0 (didn't you have one of them too?) and stuck it right into my Tab 2 7" and it works FLAWLESSLY.
Stock JB or KK-Boot kernel support exFAT formatted card.

Does anyone know if the need for the sd card to be formatted as fat32 (or, as the case may be, exfat) is also true of the Note 2? I have both devices (plus a Note 10.1, with which I have no problem using the 64gb card right out of the package). The Note 2 and the tab 2 both have issues trying to read a 64gb card. They recognize the card and its max size, but renames copied files and folders or doesn't copy them at all.

Formatted fat32 using , I can't remember now , but it works great.
Will I still get all 64gb of the card when it is formatted fat32? I hear fat32 supports only up to 32gb partitions. I know I will never get the whole 64gb due to file system usage but something like 59 or something gb should be fine

Got the card today firnatted it in my laptop as fat32 I get 58gb which seems like a lot has been taken away that is 6gb but other than that it works pretty well from what I can see so far
I have tried using ES file explorer, the Asus file manager, and FX file explorer. I get a copy failed message every time I try to copy a file to the removable SD card.
Anyone else have this issue?

I just did. Seems I'm only having issues with the 32 GB size cards. Acting like they are read only. Can't find such a setting anywhere. Is there another format that should work?

Have you tried with the latest kernel (JB version .25) and what make and model of your sdcard? just wonder if compability issue and are we talking about Micro sdcard or full size sdcard? On the full size there is a little switch on the side to block writting to the card.
I'm only having issues when I'm using the tablet to copy files. I'm on CleanROM Inheritance. I don't recall if I had this issue with the stock rom. Sometime tonight I will make a backup of my current and then flash to stock rom. Since I'm talking about the removable SD card, it could only be the micro SD that is installed in the tablet. There is no switch on that card.

Yes, it replaced what ever kernel you selected during cleanrom installation. Since it stock kernel, you can no longer Overclock.
Is there another kernel that can be the fix and still give us over clock?

Sorry but nope, I believe as soon as Asus release source code, _that is going to make an OC version for this and it's going to be awsome. For now we just have to wait.

I've been messing abut with it for days now, formatting, re-formatting in exFAT, FAT32, NTFS but the problem persists; whenever I try to copy data across to the card, the first time the card is inserted, it starts to copy, sometimes even up to 1.5Gb of data but often much less, but then gives me a 'Write Error' or 'I/O Error' message & stops working. Sometimes it also deletes other data on the card when the error occurs. then, until I unmount the card again, it barely functions at all!
A big factor in buyinh this tablet, unlocking, then rooting it was so that I'd have an awesome, small, tablet that had loads of storage & could be transported around very easily. If I can't get the cards to work with it, that's a big part of it's usefulness to me down the drain.
I tried to download the kernal that was mentioned above the message of yours that I'm replying to but the file has been moved. Do you still have it?.......or know how I can resolve my problem without it?
Any help would be much appreciated.

You don't say which rom or firmware you are currently using. Without knowing that I wouldn't go blindly flashing kernels that are nearly a year old
It could be that your card is actually damaged as I can copy files just fine on mine. I'm using a SanDisk Ultra uhs-1.

I recently updated to CROMI-X 5.2.2 from an earlier version in the hope that that might include an update or something that would solve my SD card problem.......it didn't

The card I bought is the latest 64Gb Samsung Micro SDXC Pro UHS-1 (Class 10) with write speeds of 20Mb/s & 70Mb transfer speed. I had read the formums & was torn between this card & the SanDisk 64Gb Ultra Micro SDXC (Class 10), the two-tone red/grey version, presumably like the one you're using but the Samsung was faster & at the time I bought it, the Samsungwas almost £15 cheaper. Since they were both reported to work, I opted for the Samsung card; maybe that was a bad decision?
I've just ordered the SanDisk 64Gb card, in the hope that that one will work because as i said, it really would be a shame if I can't make use of the extended storage that the SD crads give.
Do you use your SanDisk card in Micro SD form in the tablet or SD form in the dock.....or both......& have you got them formatted to exFAT or some other format?

I had read the formums & was torn between this card & the SanDisk 64Gb Ultra Micro SDXC (Class 10), the two-tone red/grey version, presumably like the one you're using but the Samsung was faster & at the time I bought it, the Samsungwas almost £15 cheaper. Since they were both reported to work, I opted for the Samsung card; maybe that was a bad decision?
I've just ordered the SanDisk 64Gb card, in the hope that that one will work because as i said, it really would be a shame if I can't make use of the extended storage that the SD crads give.
Do you use your SanDisk card in Micro SD form in the tablet or SD form in the dock.....or both......& have you got them formatted to exFAT or some other format?

Well the ROM is mine so you are all good there. Lol. I only use fat32 as that is how the cards come.
Are you copying the files in esfileexplorer? Are they single files? Total size?

Hi sbdags.
I've tried using both the File Explorer that was included with CHROMI-X & another one from the Play Store that I use on my phone called Astro; the same thing happens with both. As I say, the card seemed okay to begin with but all I had put on it was my Nandroid & Titanium backups (approx. 2Gb total with lots of small files included). The problems started when I tried to copy a season of a TV series onto the card to free up space on the internal SD card. It started off okay & I wasn't expecting any problems but then approx 1.5Gb, I got an I/O write error & then all the problems I described in my first post.
As an aside, the card performed best when formatted to FAT32 but according to the SD Card Association, SDXC cards come formatted as exFAT, so that's how it's currently formatted; I thought if that's how it came & it initially worked okay, maybe that would solve the issue. Again, I was wrong!
So, I'll format it back to FAT32 again but as I've already had it in that format, I wouldn't anticipate any change to the card's behaviour.
The 64Gb SanDisk card should be here in a few days, so I'll be able to report on whether that one works or not then.

I've never tried my card in the dock to be honest. Both my cards; 32GB and 64GB are SanDisk, I am not sure now what they cam in but I am using fat32 as I formatted them myself.
As for the stuff you posted I just wanted to know the rom and bootloader version. So CROMi-X 5.2.2 on 10.6.1.14.10 would have ben enough. Maybe the kernel helps too. In your case you are using the stock kernel. You may get better results on thatv4 kernel?

Not really, the kernel is ... the kernel. The core of the operating system. Under Windows it's ntoskrnl.exe.
You could compare the bootloader with the PC BIOS - its main function (nowadays) is to start the operating system.
It seems that my SD card is not writable when inserted. Is this true? I tried to create a new folder on it with root explorer (I am not rooted though) and it said that my device needs to be rooted in order to accomplish that task.
Any ideas?

Did you try something like es file explorer? I would try that.
That didn't work either. It says "operation failed".
I actually noticed that it wasn't working playing act raiser and it wasn't saving my position. Moving the ROM to internal storage worked. I then tried to create a folder.

I spoke too soon. After removing the sdcard that worked and putting it back in, it no longer is writeable.

It works again if I pull the card out, restart the shield and put the card back in. Perhaps something up with the mounting process?
It appears that once a card is mounted, if it is removed and re-inserted, it remounts as read only.

It looks like sdcard mounting is messed up. I can't get any of the sdcards i have tried to mount.
Did you go into settings and actually click unmount before removing the SD Card? Many linux systems (android is linux) will mount devices which werent safely removed in read only mode for some bizarre reason.
I tried that as well. It still doesn't work.

when you go to storage under settings, under sd card does it show total space for card. if not maybe you have to format it to NTFS first. thats what I had to do with my new card. also said to do so on shield guide

I did not read the destructions. The destructions have useful information? Where may i find these destructions? I assumed fat32 so that is what my sd is formatted to.

sorry i cant post link yet cause im new to forum. but go there, (shield.nvidia.com/user-guide/sd-card) user guide said to format it to NTFS
Would has added this sooner, but I lost my sdcard reader.
Formatting it NTFS worked.
Still wont mount, but now i at least get the option to mount.

Yes, I formatted it to NTFS before I inserted it. It shows the total space and space available, it just doesn't allow anything to be written to it. I can take it out and put it in a PC and it works correctly. I also have another SD card that I tried and it worked for a few minutes, but I haven't been able to get it to keep working.

sorry I dont know what else to tell you, i first had the same problem like yall when I stuck in a brand new card. nothing I downloaded would go on to card. and it didnt show the amount of space left under the storage menu. Then i found out it need to be formated to NTFS. Once i did that everything started downloaded and showing up on card.

The only memory card I have gotten working (about 1 minute ago) is 512MB and formatted fat32
The card i want to us is a 16gb microsdhc formatted fat32 when this memory card is in my shield it knows it has a memory card but says it has no partitions on it.
I am running testdisk on the sd card and it found 9 partitoins. I will try and clean that up.
To be honest, I've never tried SD card support on the device. So I can't say one way or another. But I'll be looking at it soon enough since I got my first build of CWM for SHIELD waiting for me to debug in the other room once the kids go to bed.
I just tried two different 8GB class 10 transcend cards, an 8GB class 2 generic card and a 256mb sandisk card. I put each card in and copied a file from internal storage to it. Then I removed each of the cards without unmounting and put them back in and proceeded to copy a file to the card again. Every time it worked successfully. I do not even know what format they are in and didn't format them before testing. And, maybe the issue didn't show up because I didn't give it enough time. I am not sure.
Also, I know this is probably a really dumb question but the micro sd slot is spring loaded. You are pushing it in until you hear a good solid click right?

Having issues of my own.
Bought a 64gb sandisk SDXC card for shield. It worked 100% fine in my SGS3 formated for exFat. But not in the shield...
It seems to work somewhat when formated for NTFS. But the file path is really messed up and 1/2 my apps cant see the SD card because of this. It something like (root/storage/sdcard1/....)
2 apps that are basically usless right now due to this are Power amp & FPse.
Android doesn't normally support either exFat or NTFS. The shield may include support for them but if I had a shield I would steer clear anyway and go with what android definitely trusts in FAT32.
Hopefully NVidia will do a firmware update to sort these problems though
