Questions About Newest Baseband and Rooting - T-Mobile LG G2x

I haven't had a G2X in a while, pretty much since the last baseband update was out, I have a couple of questions:
-Is the new baseband OTA? or do I have to download the kdz file and go that route?
-I don't remember how to root this device, can i go for the new baseband and THEN root? Also is the new baseband fixed to be able to work with ICS and JB roms without any fixes?
Thanks.

Nah, you have to use LG's software update tool. You need to be running stock in order to do so. I'd hook you up with a link but unfortunately I'm a new kid on the block. Just do a search and you'll find it with ease.

You can indeed upgrade to the new baseband and then root. Some ROMs will be baked to be able to handle it while others will require you to just flash Owain's fix.
Hope this helped.

Ah that's right, the LG update tool, I forgot about that. I've had a couple G2X's and I'm not a noob to the device, just been a while and rooted other phones so I forgot.
I'll worry about it when I get around to it. thanks.

I updated my BB OTA, just gotta be on stock rom and recovery..

The one I'm getting today is a used g2x, but its not rooted, so obviously stock. It probably is updated already, but who knows.

That is implied by my first line in my OP...however that is what an RUU is, haha
It's used to fix your phone or return it to stock to restore to factory defaults.
It looks like both the HTC and the Sprint support download sites do not have this posted since both support sites are still showing MR 2.27.651.6 and not this 2.31.651.7 file. Strange.
So, is your 2.31.651.7 Update file rooted???
No this is the official ruu...

No, they're two very different things, and it's critical that readers be aware of exactly what those two things are.
The OP posted a link to Sprint's executable RUU that takes your phone to the latest factory release, and breaks root if you're rooted.
The link you posted is to a zip file containing a rooted rom released by nfinitefx45 based on the latest Sprint update, along with a custom OC'd kernel he released specifically for that rom.
I have been rooted almost a year and haven't really been keeping up with rooting new RUU's. Is this newest one rootable by the FreshKitchen? I remember reading how Sprint removes root methods with updates.
I need to take mine in for warranty and want to make sure I can get CM back.
I am currently running CM6 Extremely Blue but was wondering if .7 is rootable via the one-click apk or other method just in case I ever run this on my phone for some weird reason.
Thanks. Was looking for this. I have to return my hero to sprint due to dust under the screen issues. Just hope they don't send me a refurbished more crappy than the one I have.

If worse comes to worst you can flash back to the previous RUU and re-root from there.
The new rooting method works with the update I believe.

I would just find the previous RUU files posted around here, run one of them and root from there. And you can always downgrade the RUU when you get your new one from Sprint.

You can not roll back to the previous version ruu after installing this. So after installing this I believe there is not way to root the phone until a "root" is released for this version.

Well mine is not rooted either mine was made specificaly for the one that have an S-OFF hboot, it will restore just like the ruu, just you can do it all from within your phone by flashing it from hboot. This is much easier for the S-OFF group of people out there that may been to take there phone in for service.
Hope that is clear to everyone

Nfinite, I think you're a little confused here. Please click on PTown's link. It takes you to the first listing in your sigline, which is your rooted version of Sprint's latest release, wherein you posted:
NFX Sprint 2.31.651.7 STOCK Deoxed/Odex
This is the New Update from Sprint this is a completely stock rom with everything from the factory included.
Included Extras:

Busybox
SU
wireless tether
I believe you're thinking that PTown's link takes you to your RUU release, which is the second listing in your sigline.

[UPDATE 11.22]2.32.651.2-rootable!! + info-

2.32.651.2 is available. I got a new hero today and updated OTA to the new software. then I applied this root method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804296
ive been deleting much bloat. the update has a new baseband, new software, new PRI. kernel is the same. im sure theres more that i dont know about.
This update makes it feel fast and responsive. To me-a little smoother than the last .7 official.

sorry i can't tell you one or the other; however, i was curious why you're jumping on a hero instead of something like the lg optimus s which is cheaper and has gotten great reviews?
one obvious negative of picking another device is that the community isn't quite there for it yet, but... i know it is rooted at least.
also, if it's a matter of price, two of my brothers ordered their evo's from this site:
http://ordersprint.cellbenefits.com/ind/sprint/devices.html
the prices seem unreal, to be honest. but it might be worth looking at what they have available. much cheaper than direct from sprint and the lg ends up being $50 in your pocket after contract, rebates, and/or giftcards.
anyway, just a thought. i do love my hero, but this late in the game, i'd be looking to snag a slightly more modern device. or, maybe you could find one to buy from people in the forum. i know a lot of people have been upgrading recently (i'm up in a week or so, but plan to wait until after ces before i buy a new phone).
sorry for the off-topic question!

Any way to get the update other than OTA?

So, really better performance, or just a bit? Any difference on mflops, or other specifics?

I have finished rooting the new update and I can say that the SuperOneClick method works as well. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
Rom Manager went on fine too.
Edit: My bad, I lost root after booting. I will try your root method. Sorry
Getting the S-off again is now trickier due to the new radio baseband.
why not pull the update off your phone change the script a little sign and flash through recovery
so the new update is worth keeping? I was planning on rooting my device to get the wifi sharing option that 2.2 has but i wasn't thinking and let the new ota update go through the other day. the only difference i've seen is more lag and more battery usage. opinions?
The only way to get WiFi sharing on the hero is through rooting the hero does have a native usb tether but u have to pay for any data u use on it

Right now YOU CAN'T ROOT the updated Gingerbread from LG but i'm a sneaky FOX ..... what i did i used NVFlash (google it) than i did the manuall recovery of my froyo than root it again and than used the updated gingerbread.zip file over xda forums... and fualah!!! rooted gingerbread from the updated lg update..... sweet!!!! now if they can somehow bring back the lg camera :/
They have had it rooted for a few hours. Just flash the rooted official gb rom and reboot. It's pure stock just rooted.

The zip file provided to flash through CWM is the new leak but the old baseband. The ONLY way to get the new baseband is to flash the leak using the LG Update Tool.
that's funny cause the baseband is different from the froyo and i had the lg updated GB.... it has the same baseband as the one i have know.... it still has the date on it (jul 15)

Right...at one point, you updated to GB using the LG updater right? That's why you have the updated baseband. So even after you nvflashed recovery and flashed the rooted GB rom, you kept the updated baseband.
However, if someone that did NOT update with the LG updater flashed that same rooted rom, the phone would have the old baseband.
So those of us that got the newer batch of g2x's (P999DWP) CANNOT get the new baseband by any purpose other than waiting for someone to strip it out and release it as a separate flashable file for us. Then again, prayer might work too. Unless, of course, LG adds the DWP's to the list of elible phones. But it would probably make no sense for them to do that since this was supposed to be a test-build update for a limited selection of testers that had the original P999DW models.
Xboarder has a rooted new gb leak rom
He extracted the su and busybox files and pushed them to the new gb leak

I saw that but i don't want to flash the whole ROM just for Root. My phone is working perfect the way I got it right now and just need root to debloat this thing and restore with titanium.
I would flash it over this one if at least three people confirm that gps is instant lock like the update.

Mine was not written anywhere on the box or the phone itself. In fact, ON the inside of my phone, underneath the battery, it says P999DW. It wasn't until I already reverted to stock, unrooted, restored stock recovery, and ran the LG software updater, that I discovered it read my phone as P999DWP.
With that being said, I had my doubts that I would be able to update anyway, because I know my phone is a newer build than many. My first g2x had a serial number starting with 104, and I know most people here have numbers starting with either 104 or 105...but my new replacement g2x that got here 2 days ago has a serial number starting with 106.
Well, I have confidence in the devs here...and I'm certain good things will come to light soon enough.
Now all we need is that sweet lg camera apk back and more fixes and we are good to go! someone try to get back the lg stock camera!!

This is 100% right. There was a post on the T-Mobile community page for RSA's yesterday. Since I work for T-Mobile i saw this as well. The OTA is v21e so it is the same version as the LG updater.T-Mobile also has it listed that if you do not want to do the OTA, to use the LG updater and update that way. So all I need to do is keep cwm, restore my stock ROM that I had backed up as soon as I nvflashed cwm, and then I should get an OTA update in which I will then lose root and cwm and be at 2.3.3 stock? Correct?
I'm not seeing the OTA update. It says I have the current version. I restored a backup I made right before I started installing ROMs so my current info is Kernel 2.6.32.9, Software Version V10F, Baseband March 17, and Android 2.2.2. I also restored the stock recovery.
Any ideas? Does the OTA roll out slowly?

I think that's what people were doing with the LG update so I don't see why it would be different for OTA.
Many people got bricked g2x's so I'm worried, and your saying you did a stock recovery so I'm wondering why if you didn't have to
I have 2.2 but my baseband version its july 15 .I can't do the update via lg software, it says that im uptodate :/ .. how can I get the old baseband version?

Do I want the 2.3.6 update?

I just got my Skyrocket and tried to get the update to 2.3.6. However, my phone says that I have the latest version of Android. Did AT&T stop the OTA updates?
Also, I read somewhere on this forum that you can't do the One-click or easy root if you're on 2.3.6.
I'm very new to all of this. So the questions are: do I want/need the 2.3.6 update and should I apply this update?

Only update you need is ICS and I believe Att&t pulled the 2.3.6 update...
Thanks. My next decision to make is how to root this baby and whether or not I should go with one of the custom ROMs.
What's the easiest way to root the Skyrocket? Can it be unrooted in case I want to return or exchange it? What's the slickest ROM to use right now (I recently read about Mervin's)? What do I need to do in order to ensure I can go back to stock 2.3.5 when I want to?
Sorry for all the questions. I've been reading a lot, but much of it is over my head. The only thing I've rooted before is my nook, and I downloaded a custom ROM with STEP-BY-STEP instructions that a child could follow. It worked great, but I have very little understanding about what I actually did.
My skyrocket updated to 2.3.6, and I have tried a couple of the one click root methods, and they dont seem to be working for me. I don't know if thats just me, my specific phone, or the fact that it upgraded to 2.3.6. I don't see any difference between 2.3.5 and 2.3.6, so I might avoid it for the moment and use the one click root methods. Those will let you unroot too if you want to upgrade to ICS or such when they become available.
On that note, anyone know how to root 2.3.6?

Yeah, I'm aware of the Odin method. But its def not as user friendly. Seeing as I don't know alot about how it works, and since no one seems to agree about if it triggers the ROM counter, I was hoping there was a simpler way. Dumb 2.3.6
If you're on 2.3.5, you can easily root with Shortfuse SuperOneClick 2.2 package... Then try to do the OTA 2.3.6. That's what I did and I didn't lose root after the 2.3.6 OTA. You need to be on stock 3e recovery (I was). I read a few folks couldn't take the 2.3.6 OTA when they had CWM Recovery.

It doesn't look like 2.3.6 is still available for OTA update.

If you're still on 2.3.5 I found THIS METHOD to work easily. Dont think it'll work on 2.3.6 though.
It's also got an UNROOT feature that may come in handy if you need to exchange your phone.

I don't see the update. Says my phone is current on 2.3.5
Did anyone ever figure out EXACTLY what 2.3.6 changed?
My first SR I updated to 2.3.6 but it developed a sleep death problem so I exchanged it.
My replacement is 2.3.5 and software update says it's current.
So the 2.3.6 update option is gone for me too.

Must have been issues with it, and AT&T pulled it.
Also, I've never had SoD problems.... that's weird, maybe I just got lucky.

My original also locked up, crashed, rebooted a couple times for no apparent reason either. So something was wrong with it, no doubt.
My replacement hasn't done any of that stuff...... yet.
So far so good. Knock on wood, crossing fingers, etc etc...

To answer your question, for me the 2.3.6 GPS performance is much improved from 2.3.5 (and I thought 2.3.5 was already good!). After upgrading to 2.3.6, my I727-SR started recognizing(In View) 23 satellites and locking 13, with accuracy to 9ft, within 4 seconds... crazy fast and accurate.
No 2.3.6 OTA for me either, newly acquired SR on Dec 6, 2011.
Does anyone know why the OTA update was pulled? Or how to get an answer to this?
I'm running Alien 4 based on KK1 2.3.6 and it is running great aside from some issues with Bluetooth in my car. Call quality is improved and data speeds are much faster.
2.3.6 was buggy.
I use my SGSII for support for my company. We have an Exchange server for Email (Outlook) and use Outlook 365 profiles now. By policy, for security reasons, only administrators have web access, we can access Email through our secure devices - meaning corporate laptops and our cell phones (which are secured via Exchange policies).
The 2.3.6 update broke the Exchange Email support entirely, if you are an Outlook 365 user at minimum.
This is all devices running 2.3.6.
My skyrocket updated to 2.3.6, and I haven't had any issues (there is a funny bug in auto brightness at 10% battery, but thats all I've noticed). It has always seemed stable to me. Some people have speculated that the update was for specific phones (with certain IMEI codes) instead of pulling the update for issues.
