HTC One S + Straight Talk - HTC One S

I just wanted to let everyone in the forum know that I was too a victim of the Craigslist scam where the seller would not pay for the device in full and I have been blocked from using T-Mo service. However, I had it unlocked, popped a Straight Talk (BYOD) sim card in, paid $45 for unlimited everything (talk, text and data, yes) and my HOS is working flawlessly!!! I'm so happy since I thought I just made the mistake of the year by buying from CL but I'm sure there are folks out there wondering if this would work or not. I just wanted to share my victory with you guys and hope this helps anyone else in the same situation. FYI when you pop the sim card in it will ask you what carrier, choose ATT then go to the Straight Talk website and get the ATT APN settings and you will be ready to go! Happy trails all!

Nice save! It was my understanding that you won't get 4G speeds while on ATT though...what's your highest throughput?

U get 21 instead of 42 hspa on att I'm using it now on my one s its awesome

I just seen a commercial about straight talk and started looking into it. If you bought the tmobile sim from ST does my T-mobile One S need to unlocked? I would rather use the tmobile sim rather then the AT&T one as they have better coverage in my area.

I can confirm you get full hspa speeds on AT&T. I've put an AT&T post-paid SIM into my SIM-unlocked T-Mobile One S, and here are my speeds over the last 12 hours or so.

Not as fast or as consistent as T-Mobile speeds here in the dc area, but still pretty good.
So yep, One S on AT&T is perfectly fine.

how did you get the phone to work with straight talk..when i inserted my sim card into the phone, it did not ask me which carrier to use. The phone is a tmobile phone. I do not know if it is because I have not unlocked the phone. Do you think that is what it could be? I tried to add the AT&T APN but as soon as I do that, the APN will switch right back to tmobile APN..Could you please tell me exactly what I need to do so that I can get this phone working..right now it does make and take calls but everything else does not work? I will greatly appreciate any help..

So how is the coverage, I heard straight talk uses VZW towers. Is there anything special that needs done to the captivate?

The cheap phones use verizon. The e71 uses att. If you buy a phone make sure it doesn't say CDMA in the bottom front left corner on the box.

They use VZW and GSM (AT&T and some TM). To use your captivate you have to buy one of their nokia GSM smartphones and use the sim out of them. The phones cost $200 from Walmart. Plus you can't sell the nokia because the SIM is tied to the nokia and if someone else tries to activate the nokia they'll deactive your sim. It's a great deal for $45 a month unlimited everything using AT&Ts network.
You could buy a damaged St e71 on eBay and return yours but keep sim. Then when they cut it off call and say Hey! The phone was bad! Here's the imei of the phone I'm using (damaged St e71 imei). They'll say Oh! Sorry! Well send you a new sim! Then when you get it, activate and you're good to go.
Its not going to get you into heaven or make you friends but it works. Just saying.

This is so genius. My girlfriend has a 6790. I might steal her phone for testing purposes, see if the SIM works, and buy her a Captivate for her birthday if it works

It'll work if it doesn't end in T5 I believe it is. That's T-Mobile service. Otherwise just change APN settings and you're g2g
It worked, but you may want to see this:

The info was pretty easy to find for me....I used Howard Forums website to find the info. Are you sure everything is working properly? Mine is the same except for the MMS Proxy....mine is "proxy.mvno.tracfone.com"...which makes sense since Tracfone actually owns ST. I can definitely verify mine is working in all respects.....been using my Inspire with ST for months. Problems that you could run into if it's wrong would be with multimedia messaging. If yours is ok then I guess we have two working settings here.

Yeah I saw that too. The problem wouldn't be with ST though...not really. AT&T is the only one losing out in this situation. The big thing is not to abuse the data usage. There a few idiot noobs out there who decided to use the tethering to basically replace their home internet connection.....umm....can you say stupid? They, of course, ended up with their data cut off. I have been using my Inspire on ST for months with no issues....and I tether and do everything you'd want to do with a smart phone. I just don't stream internet radio and Netflix 24/7(yes....people are doing this....then they get cut off). Bottom line, if your smart about it, it's doubtful ST will ever do anything about you using a different phone. Hopefully, others don't ruin it for the rest of us.
this is awesome. i had looked at tracphone plans before but you dont get much, i was unaware strait talk had smart phones on att with data plans. i will have to try this.
Just adding a little info here. This will work with just about any AT&T GSM phone as long as you are able to change the APN info on it. Black berries won't completely work since they have their own special network for some services(at least as far as I know....there could be some settings to allow for this too, but I doubt it). Android phones and Iphones are the most common. Some andoid phones use one APN and some use two. If you get it wrong then you may notice you have no MMS. Also, in some cases people have had issues with MMS when they don't delete the AT&T APN. On Iphones you'll have to be jailbroken to change the MMS settings...but you can get everything else to work without it. On Iphone 4 you'll have to cut the SIM card to a smaller size since the use micro SIMs...special cutters are on ebay for that along with adapters to allow the SIM to fit back into the larger slots should you ever change your mind.
Also.....never call ST customer service with the SIM card in the phone.....use the ST phone....they CAN see your imei number at that point and will know that you are using a different phone. Also, you HAVE to keep your ST phone....if someone else tries to activate it on another account your SIM will get deactivated. More info is at the Howard Forums website...just google that along with 'Straight Talk Android' or 'Straight Talk Iphone'...it should get you to the right info.

No the Captivate doesn't have to be unlocked or even rooted for that matter. The SIM is unlocked. Just the APN has to be changed and that can be done with APN Backup and Restore from the market. Backup the AT&T APN just in case you want it later, then delete it. After that you just need to create a new APN for Straight Talk.
Remember....this only works with the Straight Talk smart phones that sell for about $200 at Walmart...they are the only ones on AT&T.....and they have to use the $45 service card.

Switched from AT&T to Straight Talk!!!

For those of you who don't like shelling out the gobs of cash to AT&T...I have the link for you!
http://www.straighttalksim.com/
I received my AT&T sim in the mail from Straight Talk along with the new APN information...and voila...I'm getting the same (if not faster) download speeds than I was with AT&T. Actually, I've been strangely getting more bars than I was w/AT&T. Not sure why...since it's the same network. Anyways...this transformed my bill from $130 per month to $45 per month for unlimited talk, text and web. I don't work for Walmart or anything...I just wanted to share some savings info with those who are interested! When they say on the website "cut your phone bill in half" they're not kidding! I wonder how Wally World can get away with sending AT&T roms...offer the same service...for half the cost? I dunno...but I'm not complaining!
Now...I doubt you'd get 4G speeds....but I've never truly had 4G speeds...so I'm not missing anything.

I did this last month. Best decision I ever made. The only catch I've found is that the data isn't really unlimited, it's a use it but don't abuse it policy. I believe they will throttle you if you hog too much.
What radio are you using? I think I need a new one, mine keeps switching between 3G and H.
Been thinking of doing the same thing as soon as my contract is up.. Any activation fees or anything like that? What'd they charge for the sim?

I have been using Straight Talk for 6months with a sim card from a Nokia E71. This is known as the old sim swap method. Works great roams and all. From everything I've researched this uses the AT&T postpaid network.
The new sim card program they have charges you $14.95 for the sim card, and they had free shipping. NO activation fees or anything else.
This is the best data speed I've gotten though it's not usually this good. I'm using the 12.56.60.25P_26.10.04.03_M radio

The word is if you keep it under 2gb a month and 170mb a day you should be good. Just use 3g watchdog and monitor it. I stream stuff all the time, just be aware of how much data you are using. I've had no problems though I've never exceeded the so called limits.

WOW! That's a lot of data! I would think they will have to come up with some limits if they are going to cut off service because you are using too much so called "unlimited" data. Guess we'll have to wait and see once this thing gets going full bore. If you can keep your usage to 2gb a month and 170mb a day then this is a great deal! If not I wouldn't risk it at this point..
A few months ago another carrier said unlimited data was unlimited but they could make changes if they saw fit for the network. And everyone thought it meant nothing then. Straight Talk says no media streaming and only download from their network. They could turn on you tomorrow too. I see nothing in writing about 2GB.

I looked at Straightalk, too. Wish they had a pay as you go plan, rather than monthly, with similar discount. I like options. There are several of of these non-contract companies but not much chat about them. Thanks for starting the thread, op. I have also heard similar talk about the 2Gb. cap, so that poster didn't just make it up. It might not be in writting but it seems to be what the users are experiencing.
I have decided to go Verizion as soon as my contract is up, ATT sucks. No 4G network and I cannot even get service at my house.

ATT sucks because they don't have phone service in your area? No phone carrier has service everywhere. You never should have stayed with ATT in the first place if you didn't have service. And ATT has a 4G network, at least as much as T-mobile does and as the FCC now defines it. They also have LTE which is faster than Verizon's LTE. And what does your post have to do with Straight Talk?
I too have been thinking of going to ST. I don't go over 5gb. I wonder if that is still to much for them. I don't like att as much as the next person but I do have good signal and do get 4G in my area. Has anyone found anything about the 2gb?

[Q] Straight Talk and 3g for Sensation Help!

Hi all, I did a search and didn't get very far. Here's the deal I learned after buying my girlfriend and Tmobile Sensation 4G and putting it on a ST SIM(uses att service) that it doesn't have the 850mhz band that att uses for 3g. Is there any way possible to change the frequency to pick up atts 3g wether it be a radio/RILEY or a ROM that changes this. I don't think it is a hardware issue seeing as the galaxy s is able to change this setting easily. What I need to know is has anyone addressed this issue or found a work around? I am even willing to replace hardware if necessary. Maybe a Bell Canada radio/ril?? Currently we have Insert Coin ICS installed. Any help is appreciated! Thanks
Nope,
Maybe someone else will prove me wrong, but I don't believe there is any way to make a T-Mobile branded Sensation work on AT&T's 3G network. There were some rumors early on that this might be possible, but I don't think anyone has been able to make it happen.
There must be some way to access these network options to edit the frequency. If they can do it on some other phones maybe a Dev can get his hands on an RUU from the Canada Bell files and possibly find where this is hidden? There must be some way haha!

Not great, not bad at all actually. Especially for the price.
People over on howardforums swear there are 100/mb/day or 2gb/month limits on data though. At which point they claim they either turn off your data or close your account altogether.
I use wifi most of the day so I don't care but your situation might be different. Tmobile prepaid is what I had before though. $60/month for 2gb @ 4G speed isn't bad.

Looks ok I guess. I'm still a noob at reading those speed charts but I'll just take your word for it. The only problem I might have with them is , I'm scared they might just cancel my number completely or that i loose data completely. So would you recommend this or the t-mobile monthly $50? I'm paying 50 for my metro atm so I really don't want to pay more, I'll be glad with the same or a little bit less.

The thing is that on the $50 TMO plan you'll get 100mb of 4G and the rest will be 2G speed. Meaning that you'll struggle to play video like YouTube. That's why I recommended the $60 plan.

They have sims for TMO or ATT network.
Thanks guys! I ordered her a SIM from straight Talk for TMO. Should be here Tuesday. Anybody know how their voice/data service is in Michigan? I am spoiled by having excellent data with VZW but definitely pay for it.... Will she have worse service than with her current ST ATT SIM? Verizon's Galaxy S3 - using on Straight Talk

So,
I've read with android v4.1.2, this phone is factory unlocked. If I cancel my contract with verizon, can i switch directly over to Straight Talk (on AT&T network)? Is there something more I need to do besides maybe a factory restore? I would appreciate any help or if this topic has been shared already and i have over-looked it, please point me in the right direction.
Thank you.
You'll have to have it flashed to ST. PM Viper32. I'm gonna get him to do mine when this month is up.
Sent from my S3, because iPhone is faget.
So this can be done now? Anyone got any instructions on how to do this? This would be greatly appreciated.

I need to do this as well. My Verizon contract is up and I want to take my S3 over to Straight Talk.

Guys, I just installed Beanstown Build 16 and applied these APN settings. That will get data and MMS working:

As far as I've heard, the data connection is EDGE only without 3G or 4G. Is this correct?

I've got 3G, or what seems like 3G on it. But I've yet to achieve 4g, and it'll probably never happen with this phone.

How much data are you using? The talk around town is that breaking 2gb will get you the boot. What's your experience?

My honest opinion? With these speeds, you'd be hard pressed to use that much data. I can't speak on ST policy or know why they'd boot you. Seems a bit ridiculous. Unless you go over your plan?

I used to be a Straight Talk customer with my HTC One X. I left them due to the terrible service, and not having the same reception and priority as AT&T, even though I had an AT&T SIM in it. You be warned and dropped if you use over 2Gb of data. You can be warned and dropped, if you use streaming video (youtube etc...)
Their plans simply arent designed for that. And you cant blame them.... as youre only paying $45/month here in the U.S. If you want more data. If you want more data without limits on how you use it (streaming video etc...) then you need a bigger plan from a different carrier. You cant expect it all, for $45/month.
Also, I dont think any company like straight talk, will give you 4G. They are piggybacking off of the towers of big carriers.... those carriers dont want you clogging up their 4G network through Straight Talk (or any other) for only $45/month
LTE on ST

I have an unlocked Motorola Atrix HD (AT&T) Ive been using on ST for close to a year. At first, I only had "fake 4g" aka hspa+ which isnt terrible. My speeds were between 4-6 mbps.
The day I heard att was allowing lte on st I bought a new lte compatible sim from st for $7. I threw it in my phone, updated my apns and have been running lte ever since. Speeds are between 8 - 16 mbps now.
Only issue is sometimes ppl dont get my texts. Its really random so it hasnt been enough of an issue for me to change anything. I probably just need to tweak my apn but its fine for now.
As for streaming, I stream music quite a bit, youtube any time I want, and even netflix a time or two. Never had an issue. Now I also use less than 2gigs a month. For whatever all thats worth

Best USA Service provider for one plus?

So I'm jumping ship from sprint finally and will have my 12/256 pro in my hands tomorrow. With that said, are there any perks from att over T-Mobile with T-Mobile being the sole distributor. Seems att has better coverage in the areas I travel to but I've only noticed talks of t mobiles branded version. Tia

Personally, I'd say Google Fi. It's basically T-mobile on the cheap. I've been paying about $45 a month (I use wifi a lot), which beats the $70/mo Tmobile Unlimited plan price. Price never goes above $60, so even if I use the hell out of it, I'm still saving a few bucks.
I use T-Mobile. Best service between Philly and DC (used to use Verizon for 16 years until 5 years ago) I get Unlimited everything with 3 lines. I put my Mom and sister on a family plan with me for $100 a month that includes all the taxes and fees. With T-Mobile Tuesdays (their app) I get 10-25cents off a gallon of shell gas once a week and a few other freebies that takes each of the $33 we pay down to about $25 a month per line.
Service is great, works flawlessly with T-Mobile. I haven't seen a dead spot yet and speeds never throttle even in the cities. I can use up to 70gb a month but usually stay around 20-30gb.
I'm gonna give it a shot on VZW

Prepaid Verizon. My 6T went to a family member in need of a phone, so just gonna pop the VZW sim used in that 6T into my 7 Pro when it gets here. In the meantime, I'm posting this with that sim in my Nexus 6:silly:.. which is running surprisingly well on Pie (Nitrogen)!!
TMobile obviously
Got the phone. Went to Best Buy and paid $10 for a Google Fi SIM. Walked out to my car, popped it into the phone, started the Fi app, told it to take my # from my Pixel, and in about 20 seconds I was making a call.

I'll get a $10 credit to my account to make the SIM free.
I have been on Mint for almost a year now. It runs off of tmobile and i pay $150 every 6 months which comes out to $25/month for 8GB of data. I am on wifi most of the time so having unlimited data doesn't benefit me much.
I'm having good luck with Verizon. Everything works except for VoWiFi and I can't for the life of me figure out how to fix it although I am considering switching to T-Mobile or Mint.
I really wish we had Fi here in Canada.

Vowifi is for registered VZW devices only. Unlocked phones won't see this feature ever. Just another way for big red to lock it down.
I am on T-Mobile. Great service. Have a T-Mobile only tower under a mile away from my home. VoLTE and VoWIFI works great with my OP7Pro (bought directly from OP so not a T-Mobile branded version - I wanted faster updates) In Michigan, not sure elsewhere, but T-Mobile has their own towers as well as using all of the AT&T towers. So, for me, T-Mobile is like AT&T-plus in terms of coverage. Plus I am under a company account with T-Mobile so I get a lot of data including tethering/hotspot for no extra cost. I just moved the SIM card from one phone to this new OP7Pro and I am up and going flawlessly. No issues with VoiceMail, VoLTE, or VoWIFI.
I would be going to google FI if T-Mobile ever became a problem.

So you put in a T-Mobile sim and VoWIFI worked? I was getting mixed answers on this, some people say it doesnt, some people say it does, I also have one directly from OP and didnt wanna switch carriers then find out I cant use it.
Thanks,
Sean

Yes, I was able to make and receive phone calls on my OP7Pro. The top bar listed VoWIFI on my screen at the time of these two test phone calls. Each test was about 12 minutes in length. I have since changed my priority due to me making/receiving a lot of calls and have to stay on them and travel to locations from VoWIFI to VoLTE. But it did work fine for me. Not sure if it is due to me being on a business account (tied to my wife's company) or if I am just lucky. Fingers crossed it will just work for you.
I'm on T-Mobile, and had VOWIFI and VOLTE immediately after switching sim also.

That's not 100% accurate. I had the Pixel XL through Google but was able to use the VoWiFi and VoLTE without issue.
I believe my unlocked Nexus 6 was also able. The issue is probably that OnePlus would need to activate that particular VZW flavor of VoWiFi. It seems to have different implementations between carriers.
Edit: Also the case with my unlocked iPhone XS Max.
So, I'm guessing you can't use the One Plus 7 pro on Sprint??

Im also jumping ship on sprint. Verizion offers a 250 gift card for new ppl, and tmobile is offering 3rd line free basically. 2 lines 120 3 lines 120

I tried to. Sprint sim works for a few mins, internet works but call doesnt then you get error sim card locked

So I went and switched from Verizon to T-Mobile, and can confirm, the unlocked OP7 Pro does take on all the T-mobile features, the VoWifi toggle and VoLTE toggle showed up, the stock messanger also is working with RCS as far as I can tell.
Im pretty happy about how seamless it went, and now my calls are showing as numbers instead of restricted, or whatever, lol.
