CM9 vs. Custom Flavors - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hey everyone,
I'd like to start by thanking all of the people on this forum for being so helpful, and the devs for all the hard work they do. I am currently running GB with AntonX's Basic with a Twist kernel, and it is so much more responsive.
I'm moving in about a week to a place where Wifi Calling will no longer be necessary, so I plan on going to CM9 when I get there. However, I just have one question.
With regards to performance, stability, battery life, etc., would you recommend "stock" CM9 from
bhundven, or a more custom ROM such as AOKP, Beam, or Slim?
I know it is largely a matter of personal preference, but I was wondering if any generalizations can be made.

I don't really use this phone as my daily driver, but if I were, I'd check out slimics and jeffsf's kernel.

[Q] Need advice on a decent ROM for my samsung infuse

I am looking for a decent gingerbread rom that is stable and efficient. Not looking for a whole lot of bells and whistles but want it to run well. Not sure what the best one out there is. I have tried a couple and they seem pretty good but wanted to throw this out there...
btw - I took a look at some other posts on the same topic but they all seemed to be older... thanks for the help.

Stock leak UCKL2 is very stable and fast.
VictoryROM is only minimally modded. Also fast and stable.
Ports have their fancy bells and whistles but have their flaws.
Infuse based roms: Bionix, Numas, Caty and Zeus seems popular...
Some of the "older" ROMs are gtg's infused and mikey's S7.
if you want a gb w/o frills..go with stock leak uckl2
Cm7 is awesome as is Zeus, caty, bionix, and numas. All of those will make ur phone all warm and fuzzy feeling

Stock UCKL2 is your best bet, if you are not wanting to much. I stay on it because I'm not into theming that much. MIUI is good too. I ran on it for a couple of days and liked it.

Go to the dev section. Look at the super thread. You have to read the OP of each ROM and find one that appeals to your taste. That's the beauty of Android and custom ROM

Use stock KL2 if you want simple, fast and fully working.
You don't want Zeus (heavily altered) and you really don't want CM7 or MIUI (not fully functional).
Each rom thread normally has all the info you need as to what works, what doesn't and how to install. Take your time, browse and READ.
Zeeeeusss calls you are you ready? Lolol

Best way to find one that suits you is to go out and test drive a few. Mix and match kernels/ modems, etc. and find what works best. Just give each one a couple/ few days to get a good feel.
I'm testing out MIUI right now, as a change of pace, and like the setup of the folders and such.
Flash 'em, run 'em and enjoy the freedom of Andriod!
Zeus may be heavily altered but I assure you everything is functional....to the tenth power...with 3 times the speed and smoothness of any other....alot of hard work in this masterpiece.....that's what I run and I have to keep a chain on my infuse or it will get away from me!

ZEUS ZEUS ZEUS ZEUS ZEUS. Although themed, the extent to which it is themed is tasteful and looks awesome. Dman, Experiment and others put a lot of hard work into that bad boy. It is fully functional, fast and stable. You will not be disappointed!!! i guarantee it! At least give it a shot!
Happy flashing to all!
Thanks a bunch for all the posts. I have been part of a lot of forums thru the years and this one is definitely kept proper.
btw - since everyone is so hot on Zeus, does it have 100% compatibility with bluetooth?
Yes everything works on Zeus Bluetooth 100% except maybe HDMI not sure bout that

Which ICS ROM for my mother's Daily Driver?

Alright so my mother has the G2x. I decided to messed around with it the other day and discovered that the stock GB ROM is a train wreck. I mean it's slow, laggy, buggy and quite frankly I'm not sure it does this phone justice considering the specs on it. She agreed to let me upgrade her phone to ICS after seeing how good my MT4GS was with it. But I'm looking for the most stable version of this for her phone. She's not a big game player, and she really only uses the GPS, camera, email, and facebook. Plus a couple of cross-training apps which I'm sure will port over fine.
That being said, which ROM can you guys recommend to me? Should I keep the stock GB, root to a GB ROM (if so, which one is best suited for her needs), or should I make the leap to ICS (if so which rom)? Thanks in advance!
Maybe you should check out one of the 500 threads abt this very topic.

I have read some pretty good things about the AOKP Builds on other forums, not to mention having had some solid experiences myself with their stuff. Anything you found tricky or otherwise potentially annoying?
Thanks for the tip, regardless!
You need to keep in mind these things before getting an ICS rom. As of now, none of the ICS rom has proper video recording working. You can only record low resolution video with videocam illusion. Video playback on netflix also does not work. If you don't mind these things, ICS roms are pretty stable. IMO, AOKP and Owain's ICS ROMs are pretty good. If you want stable and fast GB roms, try hellfire phoenix 2.1. They are all in dev thread.

What criteria? There's no reason why GPS, Facebook, Camera and Email wouldn't be working on any ROM. Perhaps the best thing to do is head over to the development section and clicking on any rom; read the list of features and you'll know what works and what doesn't work. Pretty much any ROM that isn't experimental is stable.
Now if you want my opinion on it, I'd suggest you to go with Hellfire for both GB and ICS.
GB:

ICS:

if you bother to read any of the comments, you can find out how stable they are based on the experience of others.
Basically this is an undercover "what's the best ROM" thread, something that has been asked over and over.
And ics is more borked then any other rom so I say don't use one of those

Given the quantity of ROMs, it'd be a lot easier to just get some opinions from a few people rather than scroll through 1,000 posts to find out which one is the most stable for her needs. The criteria stands, as I did not know that video recording didn't work. And considering that plenty of ROMs don't have stable MMS, wonky GPS, etc, they're relevant to ask.
I appreciate your opinion and input, thanks for it. But I didn't really need a lecture on how to look things up. If this thread causes you that much trouble, then just ignore it and I'm sure your day will be fine. Chances are good it won't affect you in any way. There are likely other people who have no problem giving their opinions on the topic.

Agreed. Not that I don't use ICS, and not that I don't have ICS on my wife's phone, but if I were to put a rom on someone's phone that I don't have 24hr access to for updates, etc., it would be GB.
Well that's just how it is sometimes. You gotta actually work to find the answer to something.
It's nice we have such generous members like mt3g, MWBehr, dw9906 and zechizen, however, who are more than willing to give their input.
P.S. There's a search button to keep you from having to scroll through 1000's of posts. Ridiculous how you don't know that video recording doesn't work on ICS since there's a new post every few hours talking about LG and Nvidia not giving out drivers for the G2x.
Ya especially, if you aren't around to help out if something does go wrong. And artisan (I think is his name) is right there are two main threads that are just a couple scrolls down in GA section and Q&A that address which roms are being ran and one that address most stable.
p.s. owains ICS with Harsh latest kernel is best IMO ;-)

agree ^ i like fauxs kernel tho since you can overclock and under clock but for a daily driver and not caring aboout chaging the voltage harshs kernel would work just fine

Need a good ICS rom

hey guys
As you see I am a nexus S owner, but a friend of mine got a brand new captivate .
and now he asked me to root and put a ICS rom on it..
I looked into the development section of captivate and I saw a couple of ICS roms.
I couldnt decide which one to put..
I am looking for a ICS rom (without touchwiz) that has stability, speed and good battery life.
and what are the recommended kernels?
Thank you so much
AOKP is definitely one of the better roms, most features, very stable, decent battery life. Comes with the glitch kernel which has the memory boost, and is very fast and smooth.

The only way to know is to try them all. Personally, I've tried CM9, Gummy, Dark Night, AOKP, and I would have to say my favorite is CM9 because of the feature integration and nightly updates. But it's really up to what you like the most. Each one is going to have slightly different features and different UI elements, and they may differ in performance and speed.
These threads aren't allowed, and will hopefully be locked soon. The reason why is that you see how you got answers of different ROMs, that is because it is a SUBJECTIVE matter, meaning only you/your friend can decide.
I'm trying to find an ICS rom / kernel setup with the best battery life without losing performance. Anyone have any tips for this?
battery live depends on YOU and YOUR APPS. and how much YOU keep touching the screen and looking at the ICS eyecandy.
this is true for ANY rom. kernel makes a minor difference on battery. but not as much as YOU do. the rom itself makes no difference in battery.
These threads are not permitted as they are only subjective oppinions, and when you ask get an aswer from a dev or team member of a rom.... guess which one they will recommend to you?? THEIRS. so you dont get any objective advice.
Try them yourself. read about them in their threads. see what other people like you have already said about the roms in their Dev thread or their Q&A thread. and decide for yourself.
try my new rom, SimplyAOKPV1.0. Its odexed=faster and based off of aokp b32. fresh from the oven!
Ty for all suggestions. I will download some and flash tomorrow.

[Q] Help choosing ICS ROM for Skyrocket

Hello all,
Wondering if you guys can help me decide whether to flash an ICS ROM or not?
I have my Skyrocket tweaked and set up perfectly. It contains...
Version: 2.3.5 (refuse to upgrade to 2.3.6 due to many issues I see some are having)
Kernel: 2.6.35.11+ (excellent "stock-ish" ROM from romracer)
Launcher: Go Launcher EX
Phone is rooted and like to use CWM.
With that said, I'm wondering what is the best option to try? My main concern is obviously performance and battery life. I have spectacular battery life right now and don't want to lose it by flashing an ICS ROM.
Perhaps something that will work with the romracer kernel? For example, something that would still allow me to use CWM and MUST also support boot animations and BLN support. That is a must for me, as I use it to tweak my battery life quite a bit.
Anyways,
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
--mike

If you decide that you can live without the BLN and overclocking then make a nandroid and give smooth ice a try, skyics is also good I hear.
I've tried smooth ice for like a month almost and it is really stable and the battery was good too.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727
If you do not have the heart for glitches, ICS may not serve you well. There is no real benefit that I can see unless you are a hardcore phone tweaker. I am always debating whether to just go back to stock GB myself !!!
BUT if you really have the itch, the safest is mhx's full bloat stock. I used that for a long time, and it is very - relatively- stable.
here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1570498&highlight=full+bloat
My 4 cents....
Close eyes. Now say eni mini miny Moe! Just flash them all. U could use the experience and see everyone's roms instead of asking.... hrllo
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
you gotta wait till kernel source is released before you'll have bln and oc but maybe try smooth ice if you want touchwiz but id try cm7 if you haven't or cm9 its all alpha buy lots have used it as a daily driver... I just hate touchwiz
CM9 Skyrocket
Thanks...
Thank you all for the feedback.
This is what I though! lol
I will stick with GB for now. I get amazing battery life, is extremely stable and love all the extra features after tweaking.
Was just curious....
Thanks again,

Battery Life & Stability
Thanks to the OP for this thread. I'm in a similar boat, but am just looking for the most stable custom ROM with the longest battery life. Coming from rooted Gingerbread, I've setup my ICS exactly the same (debloated and lean), and my time between charges was cut by 1/3 at least.
From my limited research, the CM9 Beta 1 ROM sounds to have excellent battery life and great stability. However, I'm open to suggestions! One question I have though, is I keep hearing folks talk about "nightlies". That that mean it requires nightly updating? Thanks in advance.
I've been using PTSD's AOKP ICS ROM and I love it. I've mixed that with InstigatorX's Kernel and my battery life is amazing. I'm an Android noob, but I'm digging this setup.

the word nightly means that it's scheduled to auto build a new version with any fixes made during the day... It wont auto update your Rom though you have to manually install it
It is a very easy process though. you download the new nightly and reboot to recovery: wipe system and wipe cache then install, wipe dalvik and fix permissions and reboot if you installed any mods like inverted apps or gps fix or dpi changes they need to also be addresses after the first boot
Because i don't like setting it up all the time i just install the new nightly weekly
CM9 Skyrocket
I actually *just* restored to Gingerbread today, after months of using Cyanogenmod 9's official and nightly releases, as well as the InstigatorX kernels.
My battery life was okay, but for all the extra bells and whistles, they seem to get the basics wrong, unfortunately :/ I still couldn't send texts larger than 160 characters without splitting them up, and they'd always arrive out of order, or not at all. Other apps wouldn't behave properly either, and my mobile network connection seemed to change/drop just from looking at it.
So CM9 looked promising, but still has a ways to go, and it's rated as one of the better ROMs for this phone. I didn't even want to try CM10, because their bug list is still bigger than CM9.
Can I ask where you got your romracer kernel? I'll have to give that a try. Also I'm looking to replace the current radio with something better.
I had to rebuild from scratch because somehow my gingerbread backup was corrupted. I used Bonestocketeer's ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357274 ) and the only issue I've had with it is I can't change the LTE/HSPA/GSM setting in Mobile Networks to just HSPA/GSM. I was able to with my original ROM, and that seemed to help battery life.
Thanks again for your post!

To OP, james has reported you because the title and nature of this thread suggests asking which rom is the best, which is prohibited in this forum because "which x is best" threads can usually promote flaming and whatnot. It's like asking who likes the Yankees, and then fans of other teams riot about how their team is the best.
This comes as a surprise as I see you've been a member for a while. Assuming that other forums have similar rules to the SR forum.

My recommendation would be NexusMod, then. It features the proprietary performance tweaks available in the TouchWiz ROMs, so it's faster than Cyanogenmod, but it has a lot of theming that makes it look and feel closer to AOSP. There are still some ugly elements of TouchWiz that exist, but it's a big improvement over a lot of the other TouchWiz-based ROMs.
For sure, CM9 has more features and tweaking options, and a more consistent AOSP look to it, but it's slower than NexusMod and still has some very minor bugs. It does, perhaps, offer you a few more options in how to save battery, though.
I have to say, though ICS is a massive improvement over GB and we have stable, mature ICS ROMs available. I would strongly advise upgrading, but if you're concerned about bugs, stick with a light TW-based rom like NexusMod.

I would say it is: EAGLESBLOOD™ ICS "AOSP". I have bounced around using different ROMs but always end up with EB. Besides the Devs are there for you when issues come up.
Search and try
There are any number of "good" ROMs out there Some prefer CM7, or CM9. Some Prefer AOKP. SOme like to stick to close to stock because it has fewer potential problems. Your mileage will vary based on your needs and you should try some until you find one that matches your needs. There is no single generic answer to your question. If it were specific it would be more likely that one ROM best fits your needs though. For example, if you are seeking video capture and playback then stear clear of CM9 and ICS. If you are seeking a safer ROM than try CM7 or stockish. If you are seeking massive customization than go with some that have those choices(eaglesblood AOKP is a good choice). If you are looking for an iphone-like interface than Muiu might be your thing. So, sorry, but there is no one answer to this question. Many members of this site will just tell you to search and stop posting this question, but I thought I might help.
If you want stable, then get a modded stock ROM.
ICS doesn't have working video.
Cm7 has Bluetooth issues (I never use Bluetooth so I am on Cm7).

Other options
If you get tired of Eaglesblood (not like it's bad or anything) go for AOKP. I had it on my Fascinate before I switched to the G2X and the features are simply astounding.
At this point, most of the developers are using the same performance mods (making most of the ICS roms run nearly the same in general use). So it comes down to features!
Get a SD card for Nandroids, then try many.
gpmartinson and buru898 offered great advice.
Best thing to do IMHO is to read, mostly the development threads. You'll see lots of posts regarding what works and what the current issues are with particular ROMs (and kernels).
Then get an SD card for all your flashing curiosities. I usually keep this separate from my kids' movies and all my photos that I like to keep on a different SD card. I keep Nandroid backups of each ROM I try (usually between 300 - 700 MB) and remember to rename them so I can keep 'em all straight (that's the only thing I use Rom Manager for). Also finding a good launcher set-up nicely makes a huge difference. ADW EX works so well for me on that even on stock based ROM's my G2x seems snappier than a stock Samsung GS2 or SkyRocket. I bounce back and forth all the time as it takes less than 5 minutes to restore from a backup once I have a ROM set-up the way I like.
Buru, you're on CM7? WTF? I love BuruROM 2.3.4! For reliability and battery life I too like CM7, but I'll put in a vote for Buru too :good: since that rooted stock version is awesome for battery, great GPS, and I prefer using LG Cam 3.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1166531) to the CM7 camera mod ported from LG Camera.
