Hey, I was previously running a Tbolt with Google voice and the txt messages worked fine through my data plan. I started using it on my G3 and just checked my usage through Verizon and I am way over my txt messages.. It seems Google voice is not using my data..
Why are the Google Voice TXT using my Verizon messages?

What are you using to send the text messages? Gvoice or your default text messaging app? Might seem like a stupid question, but I just want to be sure before I (might) point you in the wrong direction...
Google Voice SMS messaging has always added to my Verizon text message tally, not fallen under my data plan.

You guys are doing something wrong. I have been using GV for texting for years and I have never used a VZW text. In fact I don't even have a texting plan. The trick is you have to use the GV app for texting. You can't use your built in Messaging app. Any messages sent or received using the stock Messaging app will be counted as a VZW text.
It kind of sucks since my car supports voice to text but it only works with my stock messaging app. I wish someone would make a way to make the GV app the default app and some how make it be a direct replacment so that anything that is Text aware will use GV instead of Messaging.

Good point, I should qualify my prior post.
I've always used Google Voice for SMS on my Incredible, but also had Google Voice settings allow for text messages to be sent to my regular number. This was due to some logical needs of switching people from my Verizon number to my Google Voice number and some configuration limitations for how I used the phone that have since been reconciled by updated apps.
After switching to the Galaxy S III, I now use SMS exclusively through Google Voice and my current Verizon Wireless txt msg usage stats show as "0" sent/received.

Ive been using pingchat with my friends for texting and it works great so i really dont have a need to pay for texting anymore. Is it possible that if I cancel my texting package through ATT I can set my phone not to receive them if anyone does try to text me? I dont want to be charged for messaging period and want to make sure no one tries to send me one accidentally.
When you cancel your texting plan, ask the rep to put a text message block on your account. This is the only way to aviod any accidental text message charges. There is no way to do so on your phone.
Then, you can also setup a Google Voice account on your phone and get free text messages and visual voice mails through Google Voice (using data connection).
awesome! I knew there was a way to get texting blocked but wasnt sure who had to do it. Ive setup my google voice account and love it!
Hey Everyone,
basically on my new thunderbolt i don't have a texting plan but unlimited 4g lte data plan.
I started using google voice and sent out hundreds of texts, using it.
My question is will verizon CHARGE me for these texts? It'll be crudload of money....I read somewhere that they will? or is that just a silly rumor...
i dont make phone calls using google voice either, just use it to send text messages.
If you send and receive text messages through your Google Voice App there isn't a fee or charge. It's free text messages as long as you use the Google Voice App. Make sure you don't have the Google Voice messages being forward to your cell phone. If you do then you will get the text message twice.
If you're using SMS within the GV app, the answer is NO.
If you have the SMS re-routed to your verizon messaging inbox, the answer is YES.
Check your GV settings to make sure it doesn't forward to your messaging inbox.
I have linked my Google Voice to my Sprint line, but now every text message I receive goes to the Google Voice app, as well as the Text app on the Nexus S. Is there some way to DISABLE texts to the Google Voice app? I'm not a fan of the interface.
Everything is going to your Google voice inbox so you have to Unselect notifications in your Google voice app and may sure text messages is select it.

Im having this EXACT problem.
I enabled Google Voice Intigration for my Sprint number. Everything was working normally for a day or two. Txt messages were going to the normal messaging app.
But now txt messages ONLY go to the Google Voice app. Messing with notifications does nothing. My normal messaging app no longer receives the txt's at all.
Is there anyway to fix this? I can live with using the Google Voice app, but id much rather use the normal app.
EDIT: FIXED IT!!! ZOMG!
I didnt have this checked on my Google Voice settings (for some reason it is unchecked by default!)

I don't have that option in my settings. When I sign out of voice on my phone, I miss all calls and don't get texts. Very weird.

You don't get two messages now? When I changed it I get one message from Google voice and one from stock.

Works perfect for me.
Go into the Google Voice app on the phone, and turn off all the notifications.
Then goto settings in voice.google.com and enable the one setting that i have circled in the screenshot above.
This problem frustrated me for HOURS yesterday until i found that one setting.

another thing to look out for: I've noticed several times, usually when reinstalling the Google Voice app, it will disable receiving sms messages to my cell.
If you're not receiving texts for any reason, I'd check your google voice settings (on the web: google.com/voice) then, on the website go to Settings > Phones > Edit > Text Settings (check).
EDIT wait.. did u modify the original post? Or am i crazy..
Maybe this is another thing entirely. I get texts while using google voice but only with google voice.
However, I want my phone to receive MMS/SMS the way it normally (used to) so I can still use handcent.
This whole thing pisses me off to no end. NONE of the settigs are working right. I'm now missing ALL calls and texts. Totally disabled GV on phone and web and still nothing...

So you *want* to recv all texts thru handcent, but you're not? If that's the case, it sounds like the forward sms setting isn't checked (my post above).

I just want to point out that NONE of this worked for me. The ONLY way I was able to make it so that I was getting text notifications and receiving phone calls was to completely disassociate my number with GV and sign out of the GV app on my phone.
No matter what combo of settings I tried, I would miss every single phone call (phone would never ring), not be notified of voicemails (even though email and text were chosen as notifications), and my texts would all go to the GV app but it would never notify me even if I had the settings right on the website and the phone.
I have also tried all of the mentions above, with no success. I actually sent texts to myself from my computer, and tested a ton of combinations of settings.
The main thing I've learned is that it is impossible (so far) to receive a text to the STOCK app, and NOT to Google Voice.
I changed settings on GV from my phone app, as well as on my GV on the computer.

Yes if you ported your number all your texts go through Google voice now.
You PORTED your number. Any calls or texts go through Google voice now and are handled by Google. Your texts and voicemails are saved in the Voice cloud.
If you don't want to use Voice as your messaging app just turn off notifications.
Its really not that complicated.

I have received two very unusual texts that don't seem to make much sense to me.

Not entirely sure what this one is referring to. I don't use Sprint Voice mail because I use Google Voice. So my voice mail messages should be on that instead. I've never even bothered to set up the Sprint voice mail as I never have any intention of using it.

Not entirely sure what this one means. Googling it showed that it meant a text was successfully sent and for some reason my phone didn't filter out the message. I didn't send a text when I received this one though.
Both of these were sent from the phone number 9016. Looking it up this seems to be a Sprint number of some sort. I asked some other Sprint Android users if they got anything similar, and they had not. So is anyone else with a Nexus S 4G getting weird texts like this?
Sounds like sprint spam. That's weird that your phone is displaying code. I'd just ignore it.
I just received this today also. Messages exactly same as the OP and on the same phone and carrier ...
Not sure what it is all about either .. any detailed answers?
the message is how sprint handles visual voice mail. did you happen to have a phone before that had visual voice mail and never reset your voice mail settings when you got your nexus?
Joeykrim, big fan.
Try going to messaging app and do the following: send a text to 9999 and as the message type: Block 9016. You will get a text confirming blockage of that #

Had an Evo for 29 days, but I'm brand new to Sprint beyond that. I never set up any voicemail beyond Google Voice though.
Haven't had another instance of these texts yet though, so I'm just assuming a glitch on Sprint's side.

multiple 9016 text messages.
I think i have found a fix for this annoying problem.
Ive found that it happens when u install some other text message app to handle your text messages instead of the stock messaging system.
I believe the 9016 messages are suppose to be hidden or silent messages and not actually get displayed, but when you set another program to handle all the messages, it doesnt know its not suppose to display it.
*So the FIX that i found that works is to,
tell the new text message program to Not Disable other message notifications. Meaning, remove the check mark associated with that option.
Hello everyone, I was curious to know how the Google Voice and Hangouts integration is working across carriers. I'm on Sprint and it works very well; SMS and MMS, voicemail show up on pc and on the phone. I can send SMS, MMS and Hangouts from the PC now which is really nice. Does MMS work on T-Mobile, At&t and Verizon? I understand the N5 doesn't work on Verizon, but maybe you know someone who's on Verizon. Thanks for sharing.
Incoming MMS (to Google Voice number) doesn't seem to work with T-Mobile. Outgoing MMS works, because it is sent as an SMS with a link.

When you guys are sending SMS through hangouts with Google Voice, is it INCREDIBLY slow? Just wondering.
It's almost unbearable here.

https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/6023920 be careful. Seems there is a issue with the Google Voice / Hangouts intergration if and only if you choose "Show SMS & Voicemail in hangouts". Seems it sends multiple txts to the receiver. Everything looks fine on your end. They are aware of the issue and are working/looking into it.
This just started happening to my wife's line. Nothing on mine as of yet; fingers crossed hoping it gets fixed soon.
the work around is to uncheck the "show SMS and voicemail" option under settings and then it goes back to normal.
