Problem with adding participants to calendar event? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I see that the calendar that comes with the Note 10.1 allows us to add participants to our calendar events directly from our contact list. Lol, about time Google added that option.
Anyway, all of my Contacts are from my Google Account. I have hundreds of contacts yet when I click on the participants button only about 8 contacts come up. They aren't favorites or anything. They just seem random.
Anyone have any idea what is going on here and how I can set it to access all of my contacts? Thanks.

Ah, I think I get it. It only lists contacts that have email addresses. Hmm, I wonder if there is a way to make it list all contacts?

I suspect not. Isn't the idea that it uses the addresses to inform them of the event, changes etc.?

Yes I guess but since there are many benefits to adding a contact to an event besides simply
emailing them would be nice to not impose that limitation. That if I wanted the contact there to call or navigate to an address?

Contacts' birthday

I have an exchange account that I linked with my Tab and I have been looking for the contact's birth date... which I haven't found in the contact application
Probably haven't looked at the right place. Can someone help me and tell me where it can be found ?
Than you
Anyone has the same issue ?

Do you press the "More" button at the bottom of the contact info?
If it's not showing up automatically then Exchange may not be synchronising that information. If that's the case I'm not sure how you'd force it to do so.

Of course I checked.... Exchange can synchronize birthdays on Outlook, pocket outlook, and some other softwares. From what I read around it seems Android doenst support this
Can you believe it ? The dumbest of my previous dumb phones support birthdays. My WM device did. And Android doesn't ? Honestly I am getting closer and closer to a deal breaker. A contact app without birthdays ? What's next ? A Phone without a dialer... ? I hope it;s not true
I have to check Touchdown, maybe it's available there...

You can define the birth date in the contact's device and then you can link that contact to your exchange's contact.

Seriously... that sucks...
I have around 1,200 contacts... This is ridiculous... Android is still not ready for prime time in its v2.2
Anybody can advise an alternative contact app that can replace the original one and allows to see the birthday field ? (And modify it...)
I heard MIUI ROM allows it so maybe there is a way to extract its contact app (?)
Actually I may give "Go contacts" a try
Anybody has tried and can compare with Samsung's contact manager ?

How do I email a distribution/contact list in the gmail app?

You'd think this would be a built in feature...I have a group of people I need to email on a regular basis, but the only way I can do it in the gmail app is by "Reply All" to a previous email and delete all the old email/subject...
Why in heaven's name can't I easily email multiple people from the app? I can do it online on my laptop...am I missing something here, or is this just a glaring oversight on Google's part?
Really? Nobody knows this?

Oversight.
Best suggestion, as you've already figured out, is save a draft with the contact info.

That seems like a pretty big oversight...what a bunch of goons. Thanks.
These are the same guys that omitted sending to groups in the text messaging program.

Ha, that's a very good point that I had forgotten...
Nothing chaps my ass more than little **** like that that's forgotten/omitted.
A year later, and those fools still haven't updated the app so users can send emails to distribution lists they've setup. Jerks.
A working solution
This method was described somewhere on these forums, and it works. I am just repeating what someone else discovered.
Make a new contact, using a name which is meaningful to you.
For the email address, build a list of the emails for everyone in the group, using this pattern:
[email protected]>,<[email protected]>,<[email protected]>,<[email protected]
NOTE the >,< between each contact, but nothing before the first email in the list, and nothing after the final email in the list.
This works around the missing group function.
Download and use ContactGroupU from the Google Play store.
on your computer go to gmail and add those contacts in some group and call it something for example "912dd" and go on the app and in the "To:" Area start typing the name "912dd" and select it when it shows up

[APP][Free] MeMail - quick email and share utility

Hello world,
Do you email yourself notes, to-do items and links to web pages so you'll remember to deal with them later?
The thing is that each time you have to open your email app, compose a new message, fill in your email address and only then start the message.
So I created MeMail - set up your email address once and you're done.
Launch MeMail and type away.
Found an interesting link? In your browser go: Menu->Share->MeMail and it's there.
Give it a try - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=il.co.spaces.memail
Works with all the email clients, no permissions needed, free.
I would appreciate comments so I could improve further.
Thanks.
AW: [APP][Free] MeMail - quick email and share utility
I thought about writing an app like this. I like to email myself the location where I parked my car. The email is also sent to my girlfriend, so she'll know too. Does your app support multiple recipients and predefined email subject?
The next version (which I'm working on) will have a predefined subject.
I'll also add the option for including current location, why not?
Thanks for commenting.
Great idea. Email myself so many things xD

I think including location is not important, it will make the app too complex perhaps.
It's great that you will support predefined email subject. :good: I use it to apply Gmail filter and label.
Maybe it would be a good idea to have profiles in your app, e.g.
Profile 1
Name: Default
Recipients: me
Subject: MeMail Reminder
Profile 2
Name: Dude, where's my car?
Recipients: me, girlfriend
Subject: Car Location

Sure, since all the email handling is done by your email client - If you don't send your message it will be saved as draft.

Using profiles is a good idea, but I was thinking more of creating different desktop shortcuts that launch different settings... Profiles could be used when using the sharing feature from within the browser.
Thanks

I'm not sure I understand what this is used for. Say, I have two different desktop shortcuts. What will they do? Could you give an example, please?
Working fine for me.

I would add shortcuts to drafts, so you could easily access stored notes.

I understand. Will you also implement profiles? So that when something is shared to MeMail, the user is prompted which profile should be used and MeMail then creates the email accordingly.
Btw, I tested multiple recipients. It works fine by simply separating the email addresses through a semicolon.
very cool idea, i email myself thing all the time.
Thanks for Sharing

Bad idea, of course profiles seems to be interesting, but don't ask user each time which one to use, add default profile and option in menu to choose default profile.

Good idea! Declaring a default account which will be used for sharing within the browser (I actually thought of using a pop-up).

Regarding the shortcuts "system":
Let's say you have two shortcuts - one is called "parking" and the other "notes". When you launch "parking" it has the subject set to - "my car is at:" and the body of the message has your location. It will be sent to you and your girlfriend.
"notes" will have "notes" as the subject and only your email as the recipient.
This way you get the email started immediately (no need to choose a profile).
Launching the main app will let you manage the profiles and shortcuts.

Just starting now with the next version.
Since installing windows 8 I can't get my computer to smile..
Hopefully until Thursday I'll have something out
Thanks for the heads up.

Does your people app shows nickname?

Do you have a nickname field in your contacts? I am pretty sure that on different androids there is one, also my exDialer has a option to search in nickname field, but in my people app I cannot find this field. I have nicknames filled in my outlook, and I can't see them after the sync, nor edit on its own, the filed is just not in contact details.
Anybody know how to enable it or why this is happening?
Thanks

Yes, I have many contacts with nicknames showing. If you enter them in Google Contacts, the field will appear. If you want to add to a contact on the phone, tap the contact, menu->edit, at the bottom there is a button "add another field". Nickname is there.

Boy, I haven't used Outlook (thankfully!) for years now. Maybe the sync doesn't support that field? As I said, it shows up in Google Contacts.

it is really weird. I had google nexus before for testing and nickname was there. And I didn't sync that phone with anything...
EDIT: yeah, you are right. It is because I am using localaccount and not google account. Thanks for pointing this out.

Defining relationships for my own contact

When defining relationships within contacts, I can never pick my own contact. When editing my own contact, I can not even add a relationship field. I can define relationships between other contacts, but can not define anything for myself.
How can I define my own relationships? I know I can use Ok Google to chose contacts to call when telling it to call my spouse for example, but how can I actually store that information within her profile like I can for all other contacts other than my own?
What relationship do you have with yourself? Friend? Spouse? Family?
It's you, you do not have a relationship with yourself
The reason you can add relationships to other contacts is because that field is what relationship YOU have with them
So for wife you would put "Spouse" as that is your relationship with her
You would not have anything to add to your own contact unless you married yourself
The reason you can add relationships to other contacts is because that field is what relationship YOU have with them

But that would mean that I would have to be able to select myself in that list when defining relations - and that's not possible.
So all I can do is define relations between other contacts. For example I can edit my spouses profile, chose father and select my spouses fathers contact and that will work.
So for wife you would put "Spouse" as that is your relationship with her

Simply chosing spouse without entering any name does not work - and my own contact is not available to select.
Am I missing something here?
Btw, I am using the default Samsung Contacts, not Google Contacts if that makes a difference.

Sorry yes you are right (partially), I remembered it wrongly, you can choose a contact to add as a relationship to another contact, but you can also choose yourself as that contact
I've just added myself as brother to my brothers contact, and also spouse to my gf's contact
It did however use my Gmail contact, not the one I have saved as my own main contact on the phone
Try adding yourself as a contact to your Google contacts first
(Also using Samsung contacts app)
When in my own main contact for myself, it has an option "My Relationships" under the main picture, with a + in a circle to add people to, I have added my gf as spouse to my own contact and it works fine, when you hit the + to add more, it opens your contact details where you can add multiple relationships

I agree with Detection, all of your contacts orbit around you. You define all other contacts in your universe and how close an orbit they have near you. You are the center of the universe. You are the all important one. Your contacts bow to your omnipotent awesomeness.
Feel the power of the dark side.
