Redownload maps/free up space - HTC Sensation

All right. I'm trying to add more music to my phone, but i'm running short on space. And i noticed that there is a lot of pre-loaded data on the micro SD card that came with the phone. And that data is the pre-loaded map data.
I was wondering... if i were to delete this data, would i be able to redownload it using a WiFi connection? If so, how?
I'm disappointed to see that the SD card is 8GB in capacity, yet i'm only given about 2.7 GB to actually use.
Damn maps...

Just copy everything from the SDcard to your PC/Mac as a backup. Then format the SDcard and upload the music.
S**t happens you can just copy the stuff back from the PC/Mac.

What map is the data for
If the map data is from google map, you can download them with the newest version of google map, in which you can select areas to download offline maps. If it's from other map, copy it to a PC is a good way.

[Q] Why is memory card full?

Hello all!
I have HTC Sensation for a few weeks now. I have got 8Gb SD memory card in ti (it is original, I get card with phone).
Well, I love to listen the music and I just wont to upload about 6 Gb of music to card, but there was just about 3 or 4 Gb of free space. So I hust upload 4 Gb of music. (And now, I can't even shoot a movie , becouse there is not enough free space )Well, then I search the memory card and realized, that there is a lot of folders which was not copied on the card, but Android made them. And I have got all applications which I download from market installed in internal storage. So, should I format memory card? Will phone work normally after formatting?
BTW: But there is a map .data which is 2Gb big. That is a lot. And there 4 maps in there. 3 are almost empty (HTC Watch, trips, footprints) and one is 2Gb big. It is map called "navigator". Should I delete it, and if I delete it, will phone work? (Probably yes )
Thanks, and I almost forget, sorry for my bed English =)
Try format it with Panasonic SDFormatter Tool.
View attachment SDFormatterv3.0.zip
Thanks for this tool, but will phone work after formatting. Probably yes, but whay then are this .data map for?
First thing I did when I got my sensation was to put the 16GB sd card into it from my Hero. I made a copy of the Sensations existing SD card contents (by mounting as disc drive) on my PC first so that if I needed anything I could use it.
The map in the navigation folder is for use with HTC's Locations software, which is a mapping software similar to Google Maps, only with onboard maps. As I understand it yours comes with a standard map of the country you bought the phone in - so mine came with UK and Ireland (and also France). You can download as many other maps as you want free of charge. If you go into the Maps folder it will tell you which ones you have got, because the file name is the country name.
If you want it to act as turn-by-turn navigation then you have to pay for an update. I have been told it is based upon some pretty old sat nav software (Route 66 I think) and is not very good.
So if you don't want it just delete the maps file. It won't affect your phone, but you won't be able to use HTC's Locations. But then you can probably download the maps later if you want them
peterc10, thank you very much!
I don't have bigger card, so, I will delete this useless files (but I will made backup on computer ) =) I hope everything will be all-right.
Thanks!

[Q] No Internal Memory

I need some help here. I have no internal memory on my blaze. I have no games, a hundred pictures or so, and a decent number of apps downloaded. I have used app2sd to move as many apps to the external sd card, but I have consistently run out of memory in a variety of ROMs. I am currently using AOKP ROM, but it is the same case with a few others I have used. I cannot take pictures because my memory is full. Things like evernote will not sync, nook can't download books, etc.
Anybody got any suggestions? I am not really even sure what is taking up all the memory, none of the files are even that large. I can provide any info needed, just not sure where to begin.

I used clean master which gave me a good 250mb back. You should try it.

Try getting a dropbox, google drive or skydrive account and loading all your files such as pics, videos and even titanium backup folder etc. Using file explorers suchas astro will still let you view the files as if they were on your phone. Also go through all your apps and clear all the caches. Browsers such as Mozilla can have very large caches especially if there synced to your pc. I use dolphin browser, other small browsers such as opera mini might help based on your preferences, try a few. Google+, maps and other google apps tend to keep a large cache on hand. The online album syncs such as dropbox should resolve the issue.
Oh and google drive offers more space initially than dropbox, skydrive gives you 7 gigs off the jump. If it helped hit thx

I've downloaded skydrive as I've been using windows 8 on my pc and pretty happy with it thus far. Is there a way to change my setting\s so pictures, etc are stored here? Or would I just basically upload them and then delete them from the gallery?

You need to download sky drive to your PC. You can edit the settings from your PC to automatically sync PC when on, and doesn't matter where u delete from PC or phone ,online album will sync delete across all devices. I use all three giving me a total of 14.5 gbs of space, I only keep drop box sync on and use the other two selectively.
Also probally best to setup sync over WiFi only to avoid overage on your data network usage

Ok, so things did not work out for me. I have files synced and uploaded to dropbox and skydrive. However, all the pictures were already stored on my external sd card, the real external sd card which has about 4 of 8 gb free still. So, I'm at a bit of a loss here as to what to do. The 1.39 available storage on the internal usb storage is completely full. THere are no games, music, and a few pictures on it and that it is it. What is taking up so much space?

I have the same problem with mine. Use a file manager and delete the ".thumbnails" folder in the DCIM folder and it frees up a few hundred mb. It might be hidden so you may need a root explorer or plug your usb into the computer
That's how it is for me at least.

You dont sync your browser from phone to pc do you? I use to with mozilla, but ended up with a mobile browser weighing in at around 120 mb (ouch). Use a smaller browser. Another thing do you regularly clear your caches? These can stack up. Also if your photos are all uploaded to dropbox and such, DELETE them from your phone. The ones you use for wallpapers, contacts etc., store on your external card that way to be safe and not delete them when you clear your gallery after new uploads. Last thing check your downloaded files from setting and see which ones can be moved to sd card. Other than that explore your files.
If it helped hit thx
Try wipping Dalvik and cache partition and any thumbnails inside the DCMI folder.

I found the culprit with es file explorer. Sizes of folders were not showing up if I connected to the pc and tried to use the windows file explorer. THere was some file that was almost 1gb in the cwm folder.
I use chrome and it is synced. Should I turn this off?

I would. Also have you ever tried dolphin browser? It loads web pages alot faster, throw in adaway to block popups and youll be solid. Both you can get from the play store. Its up to you but I use jetpack (playstore) with dolphin to improve speed.

Back up all your apps (Either with Titanium Backup) Wipe and factory reset everything,(In cwr go to mounts and format all except external_SD) flash your ROM. Now you should be all clean. Then I suggest getting a 32 GB SD card and use Link2Sd and Directory Bind to move actual apps to your external SD. Here is a great guide on how to use both apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33884286

How the heck do you get CoPilot Nav to work?!?!?!

Have CoPilot Live, but it will not install the maps b/c "not enough space". I travel and and need the full US Map (think 1.2gb). Which obviously isn't going to fit on the internal. Whats the point of an app you can't even use??!? I tried searching on here and still don't get how your supposed to use maps from the external card. I see dozens of threads saying modify this, change the config to this, try to config this way etc. I copied the app folder to the external but still can't get maps to download, and if it did now I would have two installs of CoPilot (internal and external card).

There is a method to install/move apps to SD?

I've been looking for a method to move or force installation of apps to my 128gb micro SD card and so far I haven't found anything that works correctly, is there some method that actually allows moving apps to the SD card? or any custom rom that allows this? would titanium backup "move to SD card" option work?
You can use adoptable storage. It binds an SD card to your phone so you won't be able to use it with any other devices, but it essentially extends your phone's storage space by that much. Make sure you back up everything on your external SD card somewhere if there's anything important on it because this will wipe it clean.
1.) Open the "Files" app (the Google app with the colorful folded rectangles).
2.) Go to Browse.
3.) Scroll down to the bottom where you see your SD card, and tap on it.
4.) Hit the three dots in the top right.
5.) Click "Storage Settings".
6.) And finally, "Format as internal".
Once you've "adopted" the storage space you can move apps to it freely by going to a specific app's "App Info" page, clicking Storage, and choosing "Change" for each app. If you want to move multiple apps you can use something like "Internal Storage To SD Card" from the Play Store, which helps streamline the process; or even go into Developer Options and enable the option "Force allow apps to write on external storage" near the bottom which will force the majority of apps to favor the external SD card over the phone's.
Here's a bit more info on where your files are kept after this process.
If you want to retain separate access to the external SD Card so that you can use it with your computer or other devices while also storing app data on there, I'm afraid it's not very simple to do so. Android 9/10 has made a lot of changes with file access and how things are managed and stored on your device. I'm still figuring it out for myself, too.
i have a question, it will lose performance?
because i think if the phone is using a UFS 2.0, is the same or better maximum speed of R/W of SDCARD?

Of course, the performance of the external drive will be lower.
However, don't underestimate them.
The performance of modern transflash is quite enough, for example, to run games like Doom, witcher or Skyrim(20+GB distros) from them on Nintendo consoles. The main thing is that the card is good. Like the same Sandisk extreme.
Not working for me. I've formatted the SD card as internal, but I can't move any apps to the SD card. When I go to the storage screen for an app, it only displays the total, app size, data and cache. There's no option to change storage location.
Yes, I've rebooted.
Same for me.
App mgr III and link2sd did not works even with Root :/
WTF nobody found a solution on a Android 10?
You don't want the apps running off the SD card as it's bandwidth is a lot slower than internal memory! It's a bottleneck to avoid.
Use the SD card as a data drive only.
Internal memory: OS, apps, temporary data and downloads.
SD card: all critical data, backups, music, vids, etc. Everything you need to fully restore the phone after a factory reset should be on it including copies of the apks.
Always redundantly backup the data drive on at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically separated! Or you will lose your data sooner... or latter.

Yes i know ... All my pictures, videos etc are on SD ...
But you don't reply, do you have a solution?
Like millions of android users, i have not enough space for games in the phone. I don't care about slow speed of game. Genshin inpact for example take more of 7gB !
OS takes 15gB ... App takes often many hundred of mB it's WTF...
App are crazy to cache, and snapchat instagram facebook etc can take 1gB each.
The sd limitation is a programmed obsolescence for smartphones (256 gB of microsd are cheap). All people don't care about low performance of specifics app, it's better than the impossiblity to install then.
Normally we should be able to make symbolic links between linux partititons.
That's the same on windows, i install my terabytes of games on an hard drive because my sdd is not enought ... And it works well.

Be happy for the bump...
You should also post your OS version for solutions.
Maybe a ADB edit could get it.
Lol, I have one game loaded. Most are fair to high privacy/security risks... that could really keep you amused.
I used App2sd earlier with android 7 and devices with 8GB flash , where only 3.5GB we ahve for applications. The result, I was able to install 100 or more apps and games without problem. It will not work in modern android.
I use a script which move all pictures , movies, call recordings to the sd card when I plug in usb-c cable. The card is a place of storing multimedia, nandroid backup and titantium backup.
Modern devices with 64GB+ flash are able to keep all apps inside , of course if all media files will be moved to sd card.

I guess xda developers not the same. It is ****. They can't brake a **** Xiaomi? It seems that I have to buy an old phone not Xiaomi and brake it.
Hi, I know I'm late to this but hopefully it will help someone having the same problem.
Tested on Redmi 9a, android 10
1- After you format your sd card as
SeekerofLight.iz said, download this app from Google store: this app basically shows all the hidden settings on all Xiaomi phones.
2- Open the app and type storage in the search bar located at the top.
3- you will see several results, tap at
"Storage Use: Storage use
com.android.settings.applications.StorageUse".
4- A new window will open with a list of all apps installed on your phone. Tap the app you want to move to sd card then "storage and cashe" and you will find the da** "Change" button we all have been looking for tap it and select sd card.
I've attached screenshots for those who prefer them.
And about performance, there was a slight lag almost unnoticeable but games were playable in general.

Not all apps will support installation on sd card... If u want force it to be on sd card, u can use App2SD Pro app but root needed

Do anyone have a good root free backup solution?

After reading about the problem people have with video playback the latest OTA versions"IN: 11.0.6.7.KB05DA ; EU: 11.0.6.8.KB05BA ; NA: 11.0.6.7.KB05AA "
I want to ask what is the best way to backup as much data as possible before updating in case I need to wipe and downgrade later. On my older phones when I was rooted I would just fire up TWRP and take a nandroid backup before updating. If any problems I would just restore that.
What is the best alternative without root? Adb backup? and manual sync/copy of photos and stuff to the cloud/my computer. I read about adb backup that not working properly for some people and possible being deprecated in the future.
One of the reasons I got the 10+ was for the SD card slot. I use the SD card like a data drive. The internal memory is for the OS, programs and to temporarily store downloads (to check for malware).
Samsung's also have Smart Switch to back up settings data, apps, etc. That backup copy is also on the SD card (haven't tested it yet).
Right now I can do a complete reload with little or no internet connection and be good to go in about 2 hours.
You can use external memory instead though. Cloud crap takes too long, same with Playstore.
Use ApkExport to copy all your apps and updates then load directly from those copies.
Save all critical data on the external hd. Make sure your bookmarks are recoverable. Any app that allows you to backup their settings, do so and add those as well.
Make sure you copy your contacts and text messages.
I keep master folders on my phone for documents, music, vids, dcim by year, etc that match to those stored in my laptop which serves as a secondary backup to my SD card. Keep at least two backup copies and store in separate locations. Ideally one should be completely off line and stored in a earth grounded metal box.
Hdds are preferable to flash memory.
Workout a plan within the limitations of your device and software before you need it.
