Data wipe/factory reset SG3 SCH-I535 - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Do I have to perform a data wipe/factory reset before flashing a custom ROM for the Galaxy S III SCH-I535? Isn't clearing cache and dalvik cache sufficient? I have work email set up with Good Enterprise on my phone and other apps that I don't want to have t reinstall/repurchase. The work email is critical not to lose.
Thank you.

[Q] Full wipe?

Okay, I'm pretty sure this is a stupid question but....I never really understood what a full wipe is...Is it where you wipe data/factory reset, cache partition, and dalvik cache? Or one of those 3 or 2 of them?
Full wipe = factory reset.
Your personal data will be wiped out.
So do I need to wipe the cache partition as well or just factory reset?

[Q] If phone is unrooted, how do I clean the Dalvik Cache?

My phone is Samsung Galaxy Ace.
1. If a phone is running stock ROM and unrooted, how can I wipe the dalvik cache?
Does the 'wipe cache partition' in recovery refer to the Dalvik cache? Does it
clean the Dalvik cache?
2. Are there other caches in my phone that needs 'cleaning' or is Dalvik the only cache in there?
Thank you!
Well, I'm not sure, but I think that you need root access to can clean dalvik

Why do you need to clear the cache? I think you need a custom recovery and maybe root also. I could be wrong.

Dalvik cache is in advanced menu, in recovery. Maybe you need root, dont know since i first rooted

There are basically 2 different caches that should be wiped when you are flashing between ROM's (or experiencing issues), the cache and the Dalvik cache. They are accessed from your recovery method (you need root) and depending which one you are using they are accessed differently, the 2 most famous (imo) are clockword and AmonRa. Now, if you are not rooted then the only way to clear your cache is by factory resetting your phone (which will erase everything). I know this clears your data and settings but not sure if it clears all the caches...
battery running out fastly

What should I wipe before selling my rooted transformer?

Unfortunately I have to sell my Tranny due to financial reasons, was trying to find what should be wiped prior to selling. In Recovery, should I wipe data/ factory reset, then format data, cache, or something? I am trying to make sure none of my personal files are left over. Thanks for everyone's help, I hope I have better luck with the 199 dollar Nexus Tab.

If you have cwm just flash a stock .zip no root from asus or the dev forum and that'll wipe Everything.
If not factory reset is fine.
nvflash will wipe everything. Factory reset might work, but I think it preserves wifi passwords. Do a factory reset and see if it remembers your wifi connections. Installing a (stock) rom via a zip file will usually NOT wipe data.
To be safe, you should wipe the entire data partition.

Yes. You should always wipe.
In order.
factory reset,
format cache,
Advanced --> wipe dalvick cache,
Mounts and storage --> format system
Than flash your goodies!

It is always best to wipe everything. Especially when you change Roms. If you are on a cm rom and you are just upgrading to the newest version you can just wipe cache & dalvik cache, flash rom, flash gapps, & reboot. I have done it this way for years & haven't had any problems. Most people prefer to wipe everything though.
TY so much

If you do all the passages you will have more chances to have a full working device
Sent from my Optimus 2X with Paranoid Android. Thanks button is here ↓ !!! Just use it
If it's your first rom, or if you're flashing an entirely new rom, do a full wipe. Otherwise, you can get away with just wiping cache and dalvik.
100% correct

ya iv had it happen to me a few times and to wipe all of them is usually the way to go, you can use titanium backup if you just want to keep your app just if you've upgraded to a new rom like going to jb from ics then do a restore and uncheck all system settings you only want your apps and their data back, if it forces closes just reboot in recovery and wipe the delvik cache and it should fix it up

Hi,
Thanks for using XDA Assist.
Wiping cache partitions doesn't remove user data but wiping data partition will delete them.
If you don't wipe them when flashing a new rom, you will have FCs.
