Hi,
Had nexus s for about 2 weeks. Best phone I've ever had, but I'm thinking of rooting it. I've done loads of reading about rooting and been trying out the initial steps. I had a struggle getting the drivers installed, but using the pdanet workaround which I found on this forum (thanks to the op of that thread), I now have the option to go ahead with oem fastboot unlock. I haven't done it yet as I still have questions, and I've been searching all over the place for answers but I'm still not too clear, so had to post.
--------------
I want to root as I am sick of the phone resetting my ringtones and google don't seem to be responding to this bug. I know that if i root it I can copy my ringtones over into the system ringtone folder and get rid of the problem.
Also fancy installing cyanogen mod once they come up with one for nexus s.
--------------
Can I definitely get the phone back to stock if I need to. I read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884097 and it looks like I can, but some posters said some things that make me wonder?
I've read that the nexus s can't really be bricked because of the recovery that is hardwired on the phone. Is that true? It was expensive and I don't want to brick it. Bricked an n95 a while back and that was depressing.
Can i get superuser access without installing a custom rom. I'd be quite happy if I could just get superuser accesss (or just be able to copy over to system ringtones folder) and the OS would stay the same.
Do I need a custom recovery. I downloaded one from xda after a bit of searching, but is it needed.
Sorry about all the noob questions - but you are always a noob sometime
Hope somebody can advise.
Cheers

Thanks for your post. It's too late now anyway. I rooted the thing and I am glad I did. No problems so far that I have found, and I got the poxy ringtones problem solved.
For anybody else that finds themselves in my complete noob position, I found this tutorial the most comprehensive - http://completeandroid.wordpress.com/2011/01/31/complete-guide-to-rooting-the-nexus-s/ .
Maybe not too late if you need to go back to stock for warranty purposs though eh?! ;-)

Lol that's sort of how it goes. You can check out the development section for some guides on just how to return to stock. If you can't find the links check the stickied thread about roms themes and kernels

Thanks, I was too involved in getting new rooted phone setup last night that i wasn't reading posts very thoroughly.
Hey guys i see there are many threads about ICS on our phones! question what files do i install in what order? and how long do i wait for it after boot? does it give it better results? Im sorry for not searching but honestly there's like over 50+ pages in comments in all the ICS threads! Can someone please tell me step by step? Also could someone give me the Faux DS OC/SV kernel if it gives better battery life? Im sorry for not searching! Im not demanding you give it to me but please if you can i would really appreciate it
i wont help, you havent an idea how to search the forums, nor have you stated if you already have clockworkmod installed. Its really easy..
Take the time to learn yourself or ditch android. **Its like they say you can catch a fish for a person and they wont starve that day, make them learn how to fish themselves and they'll never go hungry again.**

Yea, I haven't been around that long but stuff like this is crap. How do you install a custom ROM? I don't know, go READ how to, that's what the rest of us did. If someone needs to make a post asking how they shouldn't be doing it in the first place. It's one thing to be new and need to learn, it's yet another to have to make posts like this which clog up our forum and why we now have three ICS threads in the General section.
I'm sorry if its inconveniant for you to just answer a simple question. Yet people like you keep these types of threads going. I was simply asking which packages to install as there are many outthere. You dont need to be a complete d*ck. If you dont want to help like i said in my first post, im not forcing you. Dont bother writing if you are just writing to get a higher post count. I do not have a bunch of time on my hands to go through 50 pages of threads in order to understand which files to use exactly, hence why i asked. I did not ask HOW TO FLASH A CUSTOM ROM, if you read the question at the begging i meerly asked WHICH files, or atleast was trying to ask which files i should flash.
Feb 15
You can use the new version as well. I just updated mine to the new Feb 15 edition and the face unlock works fine
Make sure you got CWM via NVFlash.
Go to recovery and wipe data and format system.
Flash Initial ICS ROM.
Then flash ICS Google Apps.
- Hopefully that's all that you need to go ahead and flash it.
Here are the lates one google apps from the 15th. Also make sure u wipe dalvik and cache then data, and then flash rom and gapps. I always let me phone sit for about 10 to 15 mins after done flashing then i sign in and after i reboot again. Just to make sure everything works fine. I always do HArd reboots (Keep holding Vlme UP+Powerbutton) Always works for me. Then again everybody phone is diffrent so yeah. so Good luck,
http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps
Thanks guys! I installed it successfully with everything working
Camera works flawlessly at 5mp (did not bother trying 8 but even at 5 takes much better pictures than 2.3 GB imo) face unlock works too! I did have it overheating, then i installed Faux 0.49b3 oc/uv kernel this phone is a beast! holy. I was planning on selling and getting a sensation butnow imma hold on to it!! thanks everyone

Pay no attention to them. XDA is full of dicks. I've never frequented a forum that's more hostile to noobs, people who post in the wrong place, etc etc.
I'd rather have noobs asking questions that could be answered with a search than a bunch of dicks spending half the thread *****ing at the noob when they could have just answered the ****ing question. Or at least directed the noob to a post that answers their question.
I just tried to download it and put it in my SD card. I installed it in recovery mode, and now my phone is stuck on the LG screen, it won't even go to recovery mode when I switch it off.
u probably flashed with Clockworkmod. In this event, download the NVFlash one click. Flash your phone with a perma clcokworkmod (if you want to return it for warranty you can unflash it again with teh same tool) , then download and make sure the MD5 are the same as the ones posted online! you probably downloaded a bad file. Go to RootzWiki and download that
NVFlash will not work on my 64 bit OS. It keeps on opening windows command prompt and closing.
worked for me :/ 64 bit
Can you link me to the download and instructions on how to unbrick this piece of junk?
Yep. I'm a noob, i admit it.
I know nothing about what i'm doing (yet) but i'm not a complete noob with computers.
I understand flashing is basically changing the firmware/OS in the phone.
So i need help getting started, and a few questions answered.
First off, I'm a T-mobile myfamily user, with an unlocked tmobile/att phone.(lg G2x P999dw i believe)
Will rooting it screw up my service, or will t-mobile never know the difference?
Is there some Up-to-date easy root? and up to date version of the 2.3.3 software for it?
most of the posts i find are from a year ago or more.. i don't like things to be that far out of date..
Is it going to make me have to re-install all my apps? I have a couple gigs worth on my phone and SD card, it would be a pain to get them back. (including my progress on sims freeplay )
To start i'm interested in just rooting with the version i already have(to get rid of most of the ads in free games/apps ) .. but i see there's a lot of builds out there, is there a stable android ICS for my phone, if i decided i wanted to try it out? (linked to the safe/easy flash/root question above)
The last question was because i don't like being left behind, this phone is a lot of fun with 3d games, why haven't they updated the version of android it's running? or does someone know that an update for this phone is coming?
i also want to know what apps are safe to remove. Like.. is the t-mobile my account removable? I don't use it, it's for standard t-mobile, not "myfamily" (Walmart) , and i login through the website to check my bill. .so it's not needed.
Also, the facebook and twitter apps are useless to me, i don't do "social networks"
Sorry if this seems like a lot, but feel free to quote and slice it into smaller parts. I'll be adding this page to my bookmarks and checking it often (daily or more) and try to respond posts. As well, i'm going to post an image of my phone info from the phone itself
Please go easy on me, I'm not a linux user, so i don't have full grasp of what i'm doing.
IIRC there's a dedicated thread about rooting and all. You should check it out.

Rooting won't effect your plan, sometimes depending on the rom you many lost a bar or gain a bar with your signal... But so much as of a stable ICS rom, I'm running Hellfire Sandwich 1.7 (dirty version) and it is very stable and smooth... Also so much as having to reinstall all your apps and data, you can get Titanium Backup from the Play Store it will backup all apps plus the data that goes along with the app and after you flash a new rom just restore the backup from Titanium Backup and your good to go

First, rooting is kinda an inside joke around here. We don't root the g2x, we Nvflash CWM 5020, 5028, 5813, your choice here. Then the first thing you do after this is make a nandroid back up. After this, if you are in fact on the march baseband, just flash either kwes rooted stock or buru's mildly tweaked stock. The roms come rooted. With the nvflashed cwm, you really need to f up to brick the g2x, it's almost unbrickable after Nvflash, almost. About our threads, where are you reading the year plus old threads? Most of our threads are current here. Any questions, you could pm just about anyone on these boards and they'll help you.

there lies the issue , people go back to all the technical jargon, when i have no idea what i'm doing yet.
I paid 220 bucks for this phone, and currently have no money to buy another, so i'd rather not brick it.
if nobody can sorta.. hold my hand, then i may just stay how i am.
Use this to flash clockworkmod recovery. It includes instructions. Also check out the FAQ and stickies at the top of the dev section.

Find the rom you want to use, save it on ur SD card and remember where it is. (If it isn't a stock rom you will also have to download/flash gapps (Google apps).
Once u install cwm (from the above link), boot into cwm holding power and volume down till u get past the LG boot screen. Then go to backup/restore. Back up ur current rom. Then wipe data and cach. And then depending on your baseband, install zip with new rom from SD.
This is pretty much the jist of it.. when I was looking into it, I researched for weeks before I even asked a question, so I could understand all this geek speak.

see? this is what i mean, that thread is from mid 2011.. almost a year ago.
i want to be sure i'm using the newest , most stable, of everything
I also don't want to lose my apps, or their data.
If you just want to just root the firmware you have right now then you can forget about Clockwork Recovery and simply refer to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661657
The link above contains two easy, newbie-friendly programs to root your phone. I do have a bias toward the one I posted only because it doesn't ask you to install unrelated apps while you root (it does, however, ask for a donation). Before you root, go to Settings > Applications > Development and check "USB Debugging".
If you want to install a custom firmware then you can follow instructions for Clockwork Recovery (this thread was updated about a month ago and contains the latest versions of Clockwork Recovery).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054492
If that's too hard then you can use the thread rbryant1983 pointed to as that method is still relevant. After you install Clockwork Recovery then we can help you from there in installing custom firmware.
Everything you do is at your own risk.

Most of the ROM threads that you'll see at the top of the Dev forums are up to date. Pay no mind to when the thread was started, because most developers just update the download links in the original post (op) to the lastest version of his or her rom. Also read through each ROM's thread for more information and not just the OP. You can view logs of changes and updates made to the rom, as well as get feedback on stability and bugs with the rom from users who have actually tried it.

So. I got all this figured out. Tried a few roms. I've been using Eaglesblood for a bit now... they're supposed to be making a 4.1 port... but the one for my phone is only alpha, and crashed a lot when i tried it..
I wish it was easy to switch roms without losing apps.
oh, and eaglesblood 4.0.1 or whatever it is doesn't do the "auto-download apps fro mgoogle" thing. I had to use app backup-restore, several times... doing too many at once made the thing crash.

Try paranoidandroid ICS or JB build 12 or build 7 respectively. Its alot better than the EGB brand.
Buy TitaniumPro from market. It helps to backup user apps thru it so that you don't have to manually install evrything back.

I also find that when i install a new app, process system gets the whole "wait/ report/ close" pop up... that strikes me as bad.
No. I'm not buying titanium pro when app backup-restore does the same thing for free.
and where do i get said jb build 7?
As per title, is there a complete JB Rom that I can obtain?
I'm a new Android user and yet to touch the stock Telstra One XL rom, so yes I'm a newbie to this.
I basically want the full functions of the phone like using the camera etc, as I noticed some roms here aren't final.
And Sense 4.0 is quite laggy and I'm really anal about it, so thought a clean and bloatware-free OS would do the trick.
If anyone can assist please.

What you need to do first is look inside the threads for original android development when you see 1 that said jelly bean or c m 10 read the very first host of the thread and see if it says a daily driver. If you're new to routing and developing for android you may get overwhelmed really quickly so it's best to wait until you find a rom that is available as a daily driver . Please excuse any typos you may find since I'm typing this using my voice lol

OK, thanks mate. Yes I want to use it and pretty much forget it, until a new software update becomes available from HTC/Telstra.
Just looking for a clean installation. Not really liking Sense 4.0 performance-wise.
I'm gonna be honest: I love Sense (at least the way the widgets look), but everything else is ehh. Check out the AOKP ice cream sandwich rom. It's optimized for speed. Once you root and unlock your bootloader that should be the first one you check out: it made MY XL run smooth as butter

Currently I don't think there are any Jelly Bean Roms that are 100% done. I am using the CM 10 by h8rift and I think this one is as close as there is to being 100% done. Here is the link to check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1790032.
I am using this as my daily driver and haven't had too many problems with it and I love how fast and smooth everything is. That being said if you are looking for a rom that you can flash and leave and not mess with basically forever I wouldn't recommend and of the Jelly Bean ones. Some of them are getting close to being complete but none are quite there yet. I would stick to one of the Ice Cream Sandwich roms. I haven't tried any of them so I don't have personal experience with any of them but I do like the work h8rift has done on the CM 10 rom so I would at least look at his CM 9 rom and see if that looks good for you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1808206. As I copied the link still seems like there are some things that need to be sorted out so I might go with the person above me's recommendation as he at least has personal experience.
Hope this helps!
Use the search feature. There aren't any hidden roms that aren't in the original android development forum.

Now I just gotta research how to root the phone...
I've googled, so is the correct way to unlock and start adding custom roms?

I'm thinking of using HTC Dev under "unsupported" models as it looks more legit.

no, you'll brick your phone with that ROM. ROMs in that section are ONLY for International HOX.
regarding on unlocking and rooting, like others have said, I'd suggest you go to this section: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1541
read as much as you can on threads related to unlocking and rooting, otherwise, it can brick your device if something is wrong. And reading those can also helps you understand how things work so you can troubleshoot problems later on.
Some examples to get you started:

I appreciate the advice and for the links. Cheers
Hi Miguel

That's what you think. Once you hit 500 posts you'll be PM'd a link for the super-duper-special-top-secret-hidden development section. That's where all the good stuff is. We already have S-Off over there, not to mention a fully functional stable Key Lime Pie build.

Haha thanks guys. I completely understand that I'm a newbie to this...
Can someone please confirm that these steps are either spot on or if I'm missing something?
Just to recap, its a HOXL - version 1.89 - Telstra (AUS)
Plug phone via USB (Charge only)
Enable USB debugging
Go to HTCDev to unlock bootloader
Flash TWRP custom recovery via Fastboot (GooManager) Google App store
Flash Pre-rooted ROM of your choice (Telstra AUS tick approval).
I just did a backup, factory reset and wiped all data. I want to keep the factory ROM, just in case things go south.

Yep! Though your recovery flashing step is worded a bit weird. What you can do is download GooManager Beta from the Play Store, open it, hit menu, and select Install OpenRecovery (or something like that, I forget the exact wording). That will download and install TWRP for you. Reboot into recovery to confirm it worked.
Hi.. I'm going to be as brief as I can..
I had to get my phone replaced because it got all "defective" on me.. No joke.. it wouldn't Charge, wouldn't call, txt, turn off, tried everything.
called tmobile they said that it was a known issue and that I would have to call samsung about the warrantee. Called Samsung "Call Tmobile"
called tmobile "can't help sorry". Took the phone into the store.. "oh you have the $7.99 insurance! call them" Called Insurance.. "It's not covered call Tmobile". called tmobile "call insurance". finally got someone to actually listen to me after about 6 hours of being on my husbands phone! Got tmobile to send me a replacement. It was the very same SGS4G that I have loved for years.. Then I turned it on... New Load Screen... Gingerbread... (I was on froyo 2.2 before and NEVER had a problem with anything until the phone went completely nuts)
So now my phone....
Can't Send txts without it being MMS
Bounces from 4G to Searching whenever it wants (most of the time it's in searching or just enough signal to make calls)
takes forever to download even the smallest apps..
Basically it's become a phone that I want nothing to do with..
So I talked to my dad knowing that he did alot of rooting stuff to his Droid
He told me "Root the Phone! Put the Rom you want on it and Make it work how you want it. Look up Xda-developers" <-- for a solution it didn't seem to get better than that!
That was my Headache.... Now for my Problem..
As I was reading through tons of stuff on here I saw that there was Slim ICS.. then I saw the "Not Working" section..
then there were different programs that are needed to install different things...
not to mention that I don't want to over work my processor which is a 1Ghz processor
As for a Modem... no clue which to pick... I just need a better connection altogether..
Could You please let me know which things run the best together..
Which programs do I need to root, install etc.. these things
and I'm soo confused right now it's not even funny.. My dads droid was soo easy for him to root and change that he's confused at the process that the SGS4G needs..
Any advice or help at all would be amazing!
I will be eternally grateful for any help at all!
Please feel free to laugh at my situation.. I know I am..
This all started as a desperate cry for something better than what my phone has become.. although I think that this whole thing is going to become one big funny story lol
First of all, you need to root your phone, then we'll talk after that. Go read the how to root thread in this forum. It is an easy process. Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1375517

One Slight problem with rooting it lol... from all of the info I'm getting here on the site it says I need to download something to root it...
I would really love to get all of the stuff needed so that once I root I can just get the whole process done with.
My dad is also on thephone with me right now.. yes at 3:35am lol..
He's trying to help me look through Roms and help me pick the best one. However he doesn't know much about my phone because he's with verizon...
What I need to know is what stuff works best together.. You know, the least amount of bugs and problems. I want to know from someone more experienced than ether me or my dad because We have been looking at this stuff for almost 10 hours... o_0 and it's not getting any less confusing lol.
Thank you
Serenity

Follow the guides to root your phone. Then start looking at roms.
Most likely you'll want to start out with a GB rom and move around from there, you still have to root it to install those.

so the link told me..... "No thread specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator"
as far as the first link.. there are different programs to root your phone with... which one works the best.
The first one that you sent me to which is the One-Click thingy... sounded great at first! However I also have to download some C ++ thingy and something else before I could even use the program to root the phone..
Honestly a good program would be 1 program to root, one program to install. That kinda thing..
not 1 program to root... wait before you root install these 2 programs then stand on your head and download program 3... i mean honestly that kind of multi program stuff makes me wonder where the "Take this survey to unlock your download" screen is gonna be... lol
What would be the fun if you just clicked a button and everything worked.. Clearly something happened to your phone and you paid good money for it to work the first time. Luckily all this is free.

I hear that lol... although it took my phone 2 1/2 years to mess up lol.. but yes this is free.. and very very very confusing... but free lol
The least confusing way to do this is a heimdall one-click. Yes, you gotta have Java and the c++ runtime for windows installed but the links are provided right in the first post of the thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1358498
Starting from stock gb if you wanna go to ics download Eollie's one-click in the second post.
Now you should have the correct recovery to get to ics.
Currently the most functional ics rom I think is aokp which has auto-brightness working right out of the box.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1733097
A few things here and there aren't quite working on any ics rom:
Wifi calling
Tv out
...can't think of more now but those are probably most notable.
All you gotta do is follow instructions on the links I just posted. That's as easy as it gets. Really.
O. I forgot, to get into download mode turn off phone, hold volume up and down, plug phone into pc.
To get into recovery turn off phone, hold volume up and down, hold the power button until the second screen comes up, keep holding volume buttons. Recovery will come up.
You should also understand that as great as ICS is, you sacrifice some battery life over GB. There are so many great ROM's for this phone, you just need to see which works best for you. Check out this link... All of the information you need regarding ROM's, kernels, modems, etc. can be found here.

Wait! This thead again?! Yay! Like we haven't answered it already about a thousand time.
Serenity8525 if you haven't bricked your device because you were linked to advanced level posts. Click on the purple link in my signature. In that thread there is a guide linked by lumin30 called fresh out of the box now what? Read that thread. Yes it is long and might take a while to get through, but once you are done and did not rush through you should be comfortable enough to use the one click linked in my signature.
For the others that have attempted to help. Remember in the future lumin30's guide should always be linked to new people. It is very detailed and noob friendly.
Dude you gotta get that stickied

Report it and ask to have it stickied. I believe lumin30 stated once he didn't like having those posts stickied because people ignore the stickies. /shrug
Plus if you want to help people its best to know what all is available and easiest for a complete noob.

Ok so I would like to say thanks for everyones help... No the device isn't bricked because I haven't even rooted yet.. I want to get all the info all the things that I will need, understand the process then start the process of "NOT Bricking my phone" lol...
I don't think that it's possible to sacrifice some battery when my phone only stays alive for 20-30 minutes... the GB update messed the phone up soo bad it's not even funny... if I was still on Froyo I wouldn't have any desire to Root or change the OS.
As far as that link.... it's not usable... it's listed there 2 times back to back. I did however shorten it until it worked and thank you
Just I do know how to get into DL and Recovery mode I have had to do this a million times over when on the phone with Tmobile trying to trouble shoot the issues that have come up since i got the replacement phone with GB. I can not begin to count the number of factory resets this phone has on it...

Heh, I said that about going to GB, then going to ICS. Now I dread when I have to run GB to see how things worked "back then" when doing dev work.
The good news is that with the one-click-back-to-stock packages now available, along with a good backup utility like Titanium Backup Pro, it is a lot easier that it once was. I won't say it's "fool proof" as there are many people who are foolish enough not to read current threads about how to flash and upgrade an SGS4G, or foolish enough to flash a ROM, kernel, or "tweak" that isn't intended for the SGS4G or the Android version they are running.
Serenity8525 if you know how to get into DL mode download the one click in the purple link it will get you onto stock plus root with custom recovery. Then from there follow the directions in the ICS thread you want to flash. Just make sure it is from this forum and not the sister phones. As long as you follow the directions you will be hard pressed to brick the phone.
Like jeffsf stated once you get on a working form of either ics or gb you will wonder how you ever dealt with froyo. I suggest however to flash a different rom once you get the one click in my sig flashed. And just for safety's sake flash it twice and the second time click the flash bootloaders box.

sounds like a plan... although i know it will ultimately come down to personal preferences but is there a specific setup that works best?
setup as in...
Rom
Modem
Kernel
etc...?
honestly thats what the main question was. Yea I gave background and what not. Yes I asked what program was easiest to use. People have answered those. However what people didnt answer was the setup variations that work well together.
I mean after all the rooting and rom gets installed and im still on GBis there a combo i can use to get my signal going again? Right now if I want to make a call I have to use wifi calling... since that isnt working in ICS... I dont want to get ICS and not be able to make anycalls. I have a tower about 2-3 miles away from me and never have signal. If rooting the phone doesnt fix the signal what would i need to change to get it working?
so I'm gonna start out simple..
Root with GB cause from what I can tell WIFI calling still works on a GB Rooted phone.
I'm guessing that just rooting my phone and staying with GB will mean that better Kernels and modems will not be compatible?
If that's true then my signal will still be nothing..
but with
ICS
I will need ether wifi calling to work or upgrade the Kernel or Modem... so...
I need setup ideas
GB rooted
Kernel?
Modem?
etc...
and just to play it safe if you guys could help with the ICS setup too
ICS rooted (I think the post was about AOPK?... which has the most stuff working. so that will be the one I would use)
Kernel?
Modem?
etc...
Again Thank you everyone who has been helping me
