I posted this before but didn't get much response and I still have this problem. I rooted my phone using the 1.85 method, and am currently rooted, but not unlocked. I've tried to unlock the bootloader, but since device manager does not detect the device I can't unlock it. The phone charges when connected to the PC (IO panel, not front), but the connection type does not appear in the notification pull-down, and device manager does not display the device. This wasn't true before rooting, and now that my PC can't detect the phone I can't unlock and I can't copy over files from my PC to my phone. I have current drivers successfully installed, and I haven't updated any software beyond stock on my phone (1.85, 4.0.3), though AT&T has tried to push an update on my phone this morning.
How can I solve my problem? This is my first Android phone, and I wanted to unlock the bootloader to be able to flash ROMs and develop my own, but at the moment it isn't possible.

Yes, USB debugging is on. I tried adb using this guide (http :// www . thesuperusersguide . com/adb-backup--restore.html sorry can't post links), but once I paste in “adb backup –apk –shared –all –f /backup/mybackup.ab," I get back adb: unable to connect for backup."

When you type adb devices, what do u get output
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
In 1.85, there was the option to default your connection type. It may be set to charge only. Check your settings. This may be the issue.

As it seems the USB port I was using wasn't connected properly to the motherboard, so I had to do some tinkering there. It all worked out though*, thanks for the help.
*Except that I accidentally installed the OTA update instead of postponing it and removing notifications... Now begins the wait for a 2.23 root method. Woe is me.

Im using the revolutionary method i get my beta key.
when i run the program it type in my beta key, and it accepts it and the comes up with ''zerging root. . . this might take a minute or so. . .'' but nothing happens and it stays like this. is it supposed to boot into bootloader or something? i have usb debugging enabled. and im on htc sync mode.
Did you install USB driver on rev site? Happenned to me when I try rooting it.

Shouldn't be in Sync mode, just connect it in charging mode
Ive tried what both of you have suggested but its still the same? is usb debugging supposed to be on or off?
USB Debugging = ON
Seriously, read the guide - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300

Thats the guide im following and its not working. My galaxy s2 was a piece of cake to install a custom rom on
it works perfectly up to the point when i type in the beta key? which i know im doing it correctly.
it just hangs there? also when i boot into fastboot it has ***LOCKED*** at the top in pink, so does this mean i need to unlock my bootloader first?
No, it gets replaced with 'Revolutionary' once done.
Try a different USB port/PC
Just calm down and take a break, then re read the instruction. You must miss something

still no luck, and i have no idea why accept this sort of thing always happens to me ive managed to root a desire z in the past so this shouldnt be a problem on my laptop because it worked fine before?
This what comes up
We know what's coming up, that's normal. Have you tried a different USB port/PC at all?
I take it you're using Windows 7. If so, run your DOS prompt as an Administrator

Yeah windows 7 and ive tried all 3 usb ports. not sure what DOS Prompt is but im running the program as administrator anyway.
Then I suggest trying a different PC. Although, have you always tried it as Admin? Funnily enough it worked for me once I STOPPED using Administrator rights

got it to work in the end. i had to install windows 7 on my linux ubuntu pc
Alright, here's the low down...
My Thunderbolt does not recognize in ANY computer (Ubuntu Linux, Mac OS X, Win XP, and Windows 7.
Device Manager comes back with Unknown Device (USB NOT RECOGNIZED)
Yes I've Tried...
Factory Data Reset
HTC Drivers
ADB Drivers
Downgrade to RUU 2.11.605.5 (and it worked but did not fix pc recognizing phone)
Every sort of Windows Update Fix/Fix it program
Kicker...no Warranty purchased the phone off Craigslist
Anyway to root without a PC? I know from the 24 hours of Web Searching and asking as many people that know anything about a computer have shown that its faulty hardware...
Can I customize an RUU to install a different recovery? Include CWM in recovery.img in a signed ruu update?
Big donation to the Dev who comes up with a root apk...
Anyone help...root-a-holic in need!
I dont believe that this phone could be rooted that way. Have you tried a different data cable?

Doubt that will help
I think it may be a hardware issue, my usb is hard to keep in a lot of the time
That sucks dude. The thunderbolt is infamous for that issue.

I rooted my device (ATT HTC One XL), but now I can't seem to be able to find it in my device manager. When I plugged it in to root it using this method, it appeared just fine. However, now that it's rooted (used root checker to make sure), it isn't appearing on my computer. USB debugging is on, and I've tried multiple USB ports and PC connection types (currently using charge-only). What am I doing wrong? I also can't seem to be able to find USB connection mode options in the notification pull-down. The phone is, however, charging, and the LED light is green.
I am also trying to unlock bootloader using these instructions, but I can't find the "Unlock-Bootloader.bat" file mentioned. I'm assuming they meant the "Spoof-CID.bat" file, which I ran, but it gets stuck at "Restarting ADB."
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, I'm running 4.0.3 and 1.85. Irrelevant, but will upgrading to 4.1 or 4.0.4 conflict with root/bootloader, and how would I achieve this upgrade?
Do not upgrade to 4.0.4 before unlocking and getting g superCID. You probably need an updated driver just download it from htcdev and retry

I can't seem to find the appropriate drivers on htcdev.com. I also tried to download the drivers here*, however since device manager doesn't recognize my phone, I can't install the drivers manually.

Uninstall the phone driver and re install the one provided in the aahk zip with phone not attached. Make sure USB cable is plugged into a port that goes directly to board, no USB hubs. And plug phone in. Then try again. Also may want to try a different cable and be sure it supports data.

solved
Thanks its now solved,i used a different pc and it worked.
Well, I managed to previously unlock bootloader, flash TWRP, then rooted an A9 I got on eBay for sprint. When I factory reset it, it went into some French mode, so I decided to start clean and used the official HTC 1.57XXXX RUU.exe Im still unlocked and S-off but I am not rooted and dont have TWRP.
SO now my problem; I CANNOT ****in get ADB command to pickup the A9, all it outputs is OFFLINE.
I went as far as CLEAN install of windows ten. Wiped EVERYTHING.
installed HTC sync manager
installed 15 ADB
restart computer
at this point any normal human being would think that the ADB command should pickup the phone by now.
BTW I've set developer mode, OEM unlocking and usb debugging and accepted that this computer can transfer files.
This sucks. please help. This is day 3 of troubleshooting on my own for something that should have been done in an hour

Must have been a driver error because I was able to do it on my other laptop no problem. The weird thing is I flashed twrp via ADB on the A9 (on my pc before getting errors) and then I did my girlfriends M9 and thats when the drivers got funky.
Still tho problem remains I get device offline if I try to hook up to my PC, if it was because of any settings to select on my phone it would say "unauthorized" but thats not the case, I've authorized the phone for usb debugging to my PC
The offline must be due to you using the wrong version of adb, or could it be a firewall/antivirus prog blocking connection?
