[Q] With an unlocked bootloader, ANY VZW GS3 Rom SHOULD work right? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Okay, so here is the question...
Now that the bootloader is unlocked, we should in theory be able to install any rom that required kexec without kexec, right?
I ask because I would love to reload paranoidandroid rom, but the last thing I need is a brick.
Other than that, I assume its just normal installation of a ROM similar to when I was on an unlocked HTC phone, correct?

The Rom will install fine, but the kernel has to be modified to work without kexec

Kexec roms will still run fine as long as you keep the kexec recovery. Normal roms work too. There is no need to change your recovery or wait for roms to be updated if you unlocked.

Okay thanks to both of you.
I simply do not want to install kexec, knowing that there wouldnt be a reason for it in the future once the developers out there get the roms working without it.
The risk of losing my IMEI is just too much for me, as I rely on my phone for work, and swapping phones and running in circles to get things fixed is too great a risk to take.

Kexec has nothing to do with IMEI loss. Users of ATT, Tmobile, Sprint, and Verizon have lost IMEI. Verizon is the only one with kexec so clearly that isn't the problem.

pardon my ignorance, i am sorry.
Before I came to the S3 from a moto x2 and HTC incredible 2 I simply never heard of IMEI issues.
Well, not entirely true... i had a few iPhone's on att which became bricks after a while that had IMEI error codes, they were practically forever unfixable, and apple would just swap them.
i will have to learn about IMEI a little more before i ask further dumb questions.

what you should do is make sure the op in a thred stated that their rom is unlocked and open recovery-compatible. than you may flash without kexec. i for one use twrp to flash cm10 just as an insult to verizon lol.

So close to putting a nice dent into my data and just grabbing cm10 over 4g...
What I really want is paranoid android rom though.
Either way, seems I need to back up my IMEI regardless and can always restore if the process goes wrong.

I'm actually having a similar issue in the same situation with hd maxx. Rooted with locked bootloader so used Safestrap. I was able to install the rom but can't boot into it. I'm just seeing a black screen. Let me know if you find a way to get the rom loaded correctly.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the info in that blog is inaccurate. All of those "how-to's" state that you need SafeStrap, except for Pac that says you need CWM. I'm hoping it's just a verbage mix up and he meant to say "TWRP" instead of "SafeStrap." If he meant SS, he's going to make a lot of soft-bricks. Those ROMs should not work unless you have an unlocked bootloader. They won't work with a locked bootloader and SafeStrap. The OP of those how-to's needs to dig in a little more. All of the threads for those respective ROMs on XDA and elsewhere specifically state that you need an unlocked bootloader. Root =/= unlocked bootloader. Heck, even the CM Wiki states that you need an unlocked bootloader. If your BL was unlocked and you were using SafeStrap, you would probably get those ROMs to work. However, since you cannot unlock your BL (and haven't been able to since the May update), you probably won't be able to use those ROMs. I think the person that threw that blog together did it pretty hastily, without researching. The original post was put up just a few hours ago and it hasn't been very long since the root exploit popped up.
With all of that^^^ being said, there are only a few SS compatible ROMs out there and they're all stock based. I believe Rage HD and Nexesque will work on SS. There is also a DST ROM running around that should work. DST is a debloated stock ROM with no VZW crap in it.

while someone may have tripped and fell into a big pile of root, thats not going to happen for the bootloader. you can bank on that.
i had this issue today with safestrap 3,65 when flashing any stock roms on slot 1 and it was a no go, i installed safestrap ver 3.12 and that did the trick for me.

[GUIDE] Straight Talk Galaxy S4 (S975L) running AT&T towers Guide and Info

If you are using the Straight Talk Galaxy S4 with build number
JSS15J.S975LUDUANB1 and just want root and simple recovery
You can root using towelroot.
SuperSU will also deactivate Knox.
Safestrap version 3.72 works for getting a proper recovery installed with the option at boot for system or recovery. Note that it will say safestrap is disabled but will still allow your choice to boot into recovery.
Make a backup in recovery as soon as you can.
Or if you want awesomeness!! Do THIS!!
Here is the definitive guide for those wondering what to do that will work and be stable and AWESOME!
From the beginning:
1.Root with towelroot (search) AND install SuperSU from the play store.
2.Install the latest recovery from here using the DD method listed directions from the TWRP site. This is from T-Mobile and works! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2263001
MAKE A BACKUP!!! DO IT! No more messing around with Safestrap and the bitter warnings!
To get into recovery hold "home+volume up" during boot. Whoooo!!!!
3. Install the Lollipop gpe ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2539361
This uses the aroma installer and works well.
You may, or may not have to input *#6463*# into dialpad to change settings to LTE etc.. This adjustment may alsobe in the ROM settings!
4. Optional - install the googy kernel
I like this kernel better though there isn't a huge difference from the hulk kernel. Make sure to install the GE edition 1.3.0. NOT TOUCHWHIZ! : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2741181
ENJOY!

The zip to allow tethering WILL NOT work, and you will be stuck on the Samsung logo.
Xposed works well, but do not use the option in gravity box to add the recovery option to your power menu or your device will freeze upon pressing the power button.
Greenify works well.
Advise against ROM installation, as well as initial upgrade. You will lose app to SD ability if you upgrade.
The boot loader is not unlocked, so no cool kernels here

I used tmo twrp. Flashed tmo and att roms. I also have the Odin file. I am not sure but I am on the s975L which I thought was att not sure but pretty sure. However it also says i337 underbattery ...I've tried more tmo roms than anything. No safestrap but I might try that later. Seems we don't have locked bootloader. This is great. However unlock is next for me. Having a blast hacking the hell out of it. So far I have had no issues. Again I'm not new to this. Lol. It's an addiction. I have sprint note 4 as my DD. That's strange. If it was locked I wonder how I've used tmo twrp no loki or SS and flashed tons of roms so far...I just odined back from a modem issue. But rerooted now off to get some modems etc...boot and all. I'll keep reporting. Thank you bro. I maintain many devices and carriers and am about to start a channel on YouTube. I do music writing now with keyboard. Now I'm just getting a hand on s4 straight talk and will make a list of all working roms.

True.. I don't know as much about it as I like. I just wasn't able to use fastboot or "unlock" using fastboot.
If you are working with the modems let me know how that goes, and maybe you can help with an issue I'm having? My GPS won't work after trying a ROM with safestrap. What I've posted here is a result of trying to fix it. I consistently show NO satellites. I consulted the local phone fixers to no avail. I was wondering if it could be related to a modem issue? I think the ROM I first tried did something deep to my phone, though Phone Info showed at the time everything to be original concerning baseband etc.. And a factory reset didn't help.
I'm at the point now of thinking its hardware rather than software but the coincidence to trying the ROM was too high.
Hey everyone!
I am working with this phone and am trying to get a backup modem, can you please ,make a suggestion?
Also are there any ROMs that allow easy access to umts menu through servicemenu? I know the base firmware cripples this and I'm trying to get a work around!
thanks in advanced!

[Q] Quick Question about how the locked bootloader effects roms

I've been working on some stuff on my own but I am stimm pretty vanilla about android development in general (although that doesnt mean I havent developed anything else). Anyhow, I just wanted to ask exactly what effect the bootloader has on installing roms and such. I realize that this prevents anything besides touchwiz roms but I would like to know the in depth. It is my understanding that a stock kernel is required but what else?

Well, I guess it would have to do with safestrap too. With safestrap, I might be wrong, but it doesn't give you the same access as a fully unlocked bootloader. I'm on an unlocked bootloader, but I'm stuck with ML1 firmware. Someone else will have to give more info on safestrap because I don't know much about it.
I guess I would check this out.

Apologies, I didnt acknowledge that in my post, but I am well aware that yeah safestrap does not at all give you the same freedom. So wait how are you on the unlocked bootloader and stuck? That's interesting. Safestrap is essentially not an actually replacement to your stock recovery it just allows you to flash modified stock based roms to a rom slot if you are on a locked bootloader. But if you are unlocked then in theory you should be able to flash cwm and start fresh. Also being on ML1 however, shouldnt you be locked to begin with?

Same here. It's nice to be on an unlocked bootloader however. I'm on ML1 myself and never had any major issues. Safestrap basically allows you to use a different slot which doesn't touch the locked bootloader. On the 4.3 update which locked the bootloader there were several TW roms to chose from but when it comes to the newest baseband of NE1 your limited to stock and one other rom.

Flashing other carriers' ROMs

Hey sorry just got the AT&T model a few hours ago, tried searching for an answer but couldn't find anything specific besides someone bricking.
Are we able to flash other carriers' ROMs e.g. T-Mobile roms. I know our bootloader is still locked but I would think that applies to aosp roms more.
Sorry for the ignorance guys. My first lg phone and coming from the m8 where we can flash whatever we want without any problems lol.

So I was asking, once our bootloader is unlocked. It might be possible?
Still no. Other GSM carriers are possible but with adjustments. Straight carrier interoperability is just not gonna happen.
You know I came from Galaxy S4 and basically I was with ATT and we could flash almost all other carriers with a little bit of tweaking. You most likely had to flash a kernel with your carrier and you surely wanted to make sure the Rom didn't have a radio or that could mess you up and a lot of Times you had to enter in APN info and what not. All of this is dependent on our boot loader being unlocked or some kind of recovery like safestrap being developed. If either of those happens I am sure someone with try and/or write up a guide on how to!
Anyways to the OP, I like how you are thinking though.

Even if our bootloader is unlocked, which it is locked btw, we still cant install stock official ROM images from different carriers simply because official stock ROMS can only be installed on devices they are created for.
Now If you are taking about Custom ROMS, then yes you can interchange between devices, in most cases, with some tweaking like you said(kernel, WiFi, Bluetooth fix....) But still our G3 is locked like a FORT and you cant do either atm.

Yeah I've been using devices since the Mytouch4g, s2, etc. HTC and Samsung devices are known to flash between other carrier's CUSTOM roms with proper kernels and such. I was just curious because I heard the at&t model is slightly different, but I wasn't sure what hardware wise. But from the sounds of it, it is highly possible once bootloader is unlocked.

yeah I get LTE and everything with the at&t model on t-mobile. Just need a T-mobile custom rom to get wifi calling for my work place.
Now that we have root and bump (and a modified stock kernel) I wonder if we can flash a t-mobile rom to AT&T's LG G3. (I.e., flash the tmobile rom, flash the at&t kernel, reboot, reset apn settings.)
It may not be as easy as that, though. Bump seems to be a bit different from other exploits.

I was able to successfully boot a Tmo rom on our D850 (Dirty Unicorns) with a kernel from CM for D850. The wifi and a few other things didn't work.
However, I was able to boot D855 and VS985 roms by replacing the kernel and a couple of other system files (same method Canadian users have been using). As of right now I'm running AOSPA from the verizon forums without any issues.

For those that care, here's what I basically did to boot roms from other variants.
What I basically did is I took the zip from this post and replaced the files within it with ones from a D850 rom (such as CM11), including the build.prop and boot.img (kernel). Afterwards, you need to download a D855 or VS985 rom and edit the first few lines of the updater-script from D855 or VS985 to D850.
This is all done on Win7 with winrar. I tried it on mac with a zip editor and the file got messed up and wouldn't flash.
This is basically the same method Canadian users were using, it works the same way for D850 nevertheless.
There's no guarantee that this will work for every rom. I tried a lot of kk roms (Carbon, AOSPA, Nameless, PAC, Bliss Stalk, etc) and they booted and works nicely for the most part. I have not tried this with lollipop yet so idk about that.
But now that devs started bumping roms for D850, there's prolly no need for this method anymore.

partition info

So, there's this thread (( http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...do-virtual-repartition-invalid-t3305101/page1 )) which is basically what I'm trying to ask. I asked in that thread with no response.
I recently paid to have the sim tray in my skyrocket replaced and it worked at first, so I decided to try cm13/aospa with the new virtual partitions. Ever since then I've not been able to get service. I would like to revert back to rule out the sin tray malfunctioning before the warranty expires, but I would rather not have to use Odin, as it seems like overkill (as stated in the linked thread above).
Is this possible?
use odin to restore to stock jb, its not overkill and then maybe will you know if its a hw or sw problem

Out of curiosity, will restoring the backup I made just prior to virtually partitioning accomplish a suitable environment (stock partitions. SlimLP i believe) in attempt to rule out hw vs sw issue? Service was fine before, during and after backup, just not after partitioning then flashing.
no it wont repartition the virtual, well 99% sure it wont iirc
just use odin, easy and painless and a good base to test all hw

7. then use odin to flash jb stock firmware x2.
Is that redundant? I was just going over some of your guides and since i having service/connection issues im now wondering if flashing jb's radio before flashing jb via odin will have any significance? Dont the stock firms come with their radios??

Yeah, that's great. Thanks for the guidance.
I'm beginning to realise the antiquity of this thing though (gmail not responding, amongst other, newer apps) and am curious of there is a more modern phone that could new called "the modern skyrocket", in terms of ease of rooting/installation of third party recoveries, flashing roms, innards vs price, etc.
Any suggestions about that?

its a little slow but i cant say apps dont work, i got a ton of apps that work, gmail def works ive even updated it.
did u wipe caches/factory reset in recovery after flashing fw, odin doesnt wipe/factory reset.
i picked up a used s5(SM-G900W8) for a steal hence my sr is my backup now, almost as easy as sr but not quite. s5 forum is a mess, tons of variants w/diff processors so u better know which variant u have and/or buy b4 flashing, locked bootloaders(att's), no free sim unlock but cheap for canadian code.

I only stayed on jb long enough to be sure I had service. That's when I wiped/reset and any to lollipop.
...so these skyrockets are pretty much the best phones ever made, eh?

I may regress to kk for testing because now I'm losing service again for hours at a time. I'm not too sure what the issue could be other than a faulty sim tray or for some reasons cricket's provisioning being bastardy. My sim works fine in this moto g..but a friend's cricket sim seems to work better in my skyrocket than my sim does, and my sim works fine on her zte "whatever it is". I dunno.
When I put my sim in the skyrocket the apns get all wonky and even manually adding them doesn't always help.
I really hate to see my skyrocket go down hill so badly. I love it like it's my family. Any time I'd call around for parts/repairs, they'd try talking me into just getting a newer phone instead for just a little more than the price to fix my antiquated contraption. How dare they!

keep stock jb running for awhile(maybe a 3 to 7 days) to test, jb is the latest official fw and the best to get a good baseline for what works and doesn't

Solid copy.
Will try.
It even took a long time + apn fiddling to get service after reverting to stock jb. Once it stuck for about 30 minutes on jb, I moved on to lp.
I can just twrp flash back to stock now, yeah?
Or is it odinville again?
