Flipboard for Android (Dark Theme Mod) - General Questions and Answers

Hi Guys
I was just wondering if anyone would be able to do a Dark Theme Mod of the Flipboard app?
I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who would like this if possible.
Here's hoping! And thanks as always.

Man I got so excited when I saw this, I thought you were announcing that you had done it. +1000001111eleventybillion to whoever can.

Well, it obviously looks like there is not a developer or themer that wants or needs this.
Maybe you all should work together to modify the app theme to a dark theme. It isn't that complicated. There is also the option of using a 3rd party launcher or 3rd party theme app to achieve this, some of these can even add the dark theme to everything on the device without needing to modify the apps themselves.

PlayStore, do a search for "dark theme" you'll probably see many options, try a few until you find one you like, don't be lazy.

I'm not, mate. What you talk about, in a so generic way, just doesn't exists. Period.

I went to Playstore and searched for:
"Dark theme"
These are the results:
https://play.google.com/store/search?q=Dark theme&c=apps
Some of the apps in those results can be used to dark theme other apps, even add dark theme to the whole device with the right setup of app/apps. Try a lot of them, dig deeply into the different ways they can be used, see if any work together to enable/disable dark theme where you want/don't want.
I did a simple Google search for:
"Apps to make all apps dark theme"
This is one of the first results I found:
https://www.davebennett.tech/dark-theme-any-app/
That is just one result, there are many others.
The point is, there are things already available to do what you want.
If that isn't enough, do a Google search for:
"How to use APKtool to modify apps"
Or
"How to theme android apps"
Use one/some of those guides to learn how to actually modify and repackage the apk file of whatever app that you want to add dark theme to.
To learn how to actually edit the apk to add dark theme, do a Google search for:
"How to edit apk file to add dark theme"
You can even change the icon for the app or even change the image files for the different "buttons" or the font in the app, you can even change the color/location of buttons and text in the app.
The point is, the stuff to do what you want already exists at various levels of difficulty. Find the difficulty level that you are comfortable with and figure it out by trial and error.
I think I've shown you some basic examples of how you can acieve your result for any/all apps, it's up to you to dig in and find your best option.

I'm looking for the exact same answer. I normally do some light reading after dinner. And the white background on my android does my head in. I just saw that ios users have it lucky with the invert colours option. Why the step motherly treatment for us android users?

You can enable invert color option from developer menu while using Flipboard
Am using that since many days as I found no other option

@eyahl... maybe he's asking to change the background for the app drawer, and not the wallpaper...? If you look at the attached pic carefully, you'll realize its not the homescreen, but the app drawer, which has probably been modified in whatever garish looking ROM that is...
Although the other possibility is that the app drawer is completely transparent, in which case your suggestion is perfect . But i doubt that, because you can't see any other homescreen elements through the background, which would have been visible if the app drawer had been transparent (clock, other widgets, etc), so i think my hunch above is correct. (Also, I can't believe that the OP managed to flash an entire custom ROM without having the slightest idea regarding changing the wallpaper...wouldn't that be something!! )

Well, I've seen a lot things here I couldn't believe..
But I think you are right.
Anyways, changing the app drawers background is not that easy if it's not featured by the ROM.

what the hell is that ROM you're using??

Okay, i'll give you the easiest and best way out.
Flash Endymion.
You could use another launcher. Also try alt app draw (search the forum)
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
yeah you should stick with well known roms where you can get support, but there is a problem that needs to be solved so try pressing menu from within the app drawer to see if anything pops up , or it could be somewhere in the settings, it has to exist somewhere, if not consider another launcher
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1210143
Look for "Custom background app drawer", and follow the steps given.

(Request) Dark settings

As the title states, does anyone have a zip that can be flashed or copied that can make settings dark..
Running monx 757rom.
Cheers.

Wrong section mate
Use Q&A for this...
BTW - you have tutorial in crossection "how to make transparent framework" you can use that or any tutorial online to edit settings app.
Only instead of translucent, use dark.theme settings.
Try to google "how to make black framework" then apply that on setting.
You'll see, it's really not that hard..

There are some tryings and few ROMs but im not sure is there any based on latest firmware.
You have jfxperias ROM - dark...
Z1 is looking great and elegant in white so I guess that's the reason - there's no "market" for dark apps....
But here you go, open thread, mod some apps to dark and change that... - Why not..
Android is awesome platform, you have dark and light assets (backgrounds, icons, buttons) in every ROM.
You just have to change few xml files and few smali (for settings/apps) and it'll work.
That's the huge advantage - just imagine you should draw every single png!
That should all have in mind when spits on manufacturers...

Not out yet, but i am currently working on a dark theme for the galaxy too.
It would nice if some apps Gmail and what's app get themed dark too
Yeah, definitely looking for a wholly dark experience. I've already added a dark theme and navbar but still want all dark notifications (just like wunderground)... and gmail etc...

Yeah since 7.0 the Samsung themes don't support changing the color of the notifications. But it should come later.
There is a stock one made by Samsung, its jet black, To get an instant preview, goto "Accessibility" "Vision" and enable "negative colours"
If you like this look, then do the following, first turn off Negative Colours.
You need to be logged into your Samsung account.
Then goto "Settings" "Wallpapers and Themes"
Then "Themes" (at the bottom) "Search" (at the top) for "High Contrast" download and apply this...
Then its like someone cut your circulation - made your world turn black !!
This makes the system menus black, and so for the phone, contacts, calendar, calculator and notification shade.
feedback your thoughts. After smashing the "thanks" button =)
The one I'm using and think is the cleanest is Material Black in theme store.
This is good.

Recommended theme that looks like the stock theme but dark grey insted of white?

Or is it possible to change the white background without installing a theme? Thanks.

But this does change the icons. I am using cobalt icon pack so I don't know which icon pack you can use to make them look stock.

It's a shame Samsung removed the ability to change the colour of the SMS speech bubbles. There's quite a few fairly good grey ones let down by having hard to read SMS!

Hi I have tested and i like this theme. For installation respected the process and ok. Thanks

what are the best apps on f-droid to get? (with black themes)

I'm looking for black themed apps specifically for like Gmail. I've come across in GB insta YouTube vanced and even face Slim. Those have been great, still looking for a decent email application with a black theme. If anyone knows the best apps to get on f-droid share them here.
I'm interested to see who considers what app to be good and why. Also there was a YouTube alternative app that allowed downloading app videos what was that app called? I'm sure someone on here will know.

I think the YouTube you're thinking of is called OG YouTube.
As for black email clients, I've been using the Samsung one. It's a little different to get used to but not bad.
Bromite, open source Chromium without Google's crap, if you care about that
Newpipe, very lightweight YouTube client with downloads and dark mode.

Check out YouTube Vanced - it's the regular YouTube client but with all the ads removed, has black mode, background play, and a lot more features! It's basically the way YouTube should have been designed in the first place!

For email im using TypeApp which has a dark theme and fairly customizeable appearance and can support multiple email accounts. Its not on f-droid however so if you dont have/want to use google play store you may be able to find the APK for it online.
If you use the hex theme creator it sets gmail background to whatever you themed background colour to.

If you personalise, setup the colours and settings you want. Then at the bottom build theme. Once that has finished, go to theme store and apply the hex theme.
Gmail, Google Photos, Play store and some others will theme.
The only issue I have found is multiple accounts in gmail I have to select the account swipe out of the app and back in every time I change account.

Interesting, I'll have a thorough look at the app hopefully it's as simple as you make it out to be. Cuz it comes packaged with two apps one being the theme selection store and then one of your own personal customisation. Also do you have to reapply the themes after every boot up? Or after every update do you have to uninstall each overlays like substratum if you wish to update?

No the theme stays there all the time, when you make changes though, it seems that you have to apply the default theme then apply hex theme again.
