Android (Speech and Voiceover in relation to other apps) - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi,
First of all I'm not sure this is posted in the right area so apologies if it needs to be moved.
I have an issue with ICS 4.0.4 where it seems as though the audio/voiceover for apps such as Maps and adidas miCoach seem to have priority over the audio.
on GB miCoach used to voiceover the music (poweramp or stock music player) simultaneously but now it seems to have priority and pauses the music to speak it's commands. The same can be said for Maps which I experienced today.
On this basis I'm presuming it is something to do with the operating system.
Is there any way these priorities can be altered so I can have the music and app audio play at the same time?
I'd appreciate any suggestions
Thanks

Music apps

Hi is there anyone notice about the music apps frequently change or stop the music automatically when you lock the phone?
And at times it automatically call my phone contacts...

Not to completely hijack, but I too have a question about a music player and don't want to put up a new thread:
Does anyone have a recommendation for an app that is: low-resource, devoid of lockscreen freezing/dialing (no exp with this, but above poster made it sound terrible), and supports control via a2dp/bluetooth?
I frequently use my phone as my GPS in my car and would like to be able to run a music app in the background that I can control from a bluetooth headset. I assume that there are some "simple" music apps that require fewer resources in the background.
Does anyone have a recommendation? Is the sensation powerful enough that any old app should run fine in the background?
Best,
NR

PowerAMP hands down is the best application I have used, and trust me, I lost count of how many different ones I have tried. It isn't cheap though at $4.99, but give the 2 week FULL trial a test drive and see if you like it. I liked it so much I bought it. It has all the features you requested above.

[Q] 2.3 changes default buffer amount for streaming audio apps? At my wit's end!

I have a samsung vibrant and use streamfurious to listen to a shoutcast stream*. While on froyo, the 16k stream buffers for about three seconds. When I run CM7 2.3 it buffers for around 90 seconds. Identical stream, identical app.
I tried other apps, like xiialive, including the pro version (even after setting the buffer amount manually) but it still buffers way way more than it did on 2.2. I tested this all on my wifi at home so I know it's not a bandwidth thing.
If I use the official scanner radio app, with the "android player" selected in settings it does the same thing. If I switch it to the 'alternate' player it does not. I don't want to use the scanner radio app though because it does not support the metadata in the stream, which I want to see.
My wife has a G2 running CM7 2.3 and streamfurious does the same thing, buffering for a very long time before it plays.
I've tried a ton of different players on the market, googled around, etc. The most I can figure out is that it seems like something in stagefright was changed that affects how much data is buffered. Despite finding people reporting similar problems on 2.3 (stock or not) for different roms and phones, I can't find any kind of solution.
So I come here. Does anyone, perhaps with knowledge of the stagefright libraries, have at least an answer for me? Is there a setting or hack I can use to stop this behavior?
I'd really appreciate any help, I'm at my wit's end.
*m.radioreference.com has a ton of feeds that all work the same way. I just launch them in the browser and choose the streamfurious player I've installed prior.
going to try bumping this for attention

[Q] A Good Music Player, with Good Equalizer?

I am looking for a music player with a good graphical equalizer. I have yet to find one that works without flaws...
(Running MIUI ROM on an Inspire 4G)
MIUI stock music player:
Sounds good, equalizer is satisfactory, but you can't tell it what folder to pull music from. It just reads the whole phone. It has a setting that you specify minimum file size for, but that's crap. Should be able to just tell it where to find music and only load that music... It also skips/cuts off etc A LOT!
PlayerPro:
This player has a really crappy equalizer. The only positive I can think of about this app is the ability to use SRS enhancement in HTC phones that have it. This one skips/cuts out music more than any other app I have tried. No matter what happens, screen turns off, like 5-20 rapid cutouts. Quality of playback is poor. Accessing certain features are a pain and needs to be able to be accessed from Menu button while in the player, not just the main screen. But the cutouts for anything happening to the phone, browsing for the next song, volume up/down. Minimizing, screen on off. Huge/a lot of cutouts in playback.
PowerAMP:
This was probably one of the better apps. Great equalizer, very direct navigation to whatever you need. But this player also suffers from the cutouts when locking/unlocking or interacting with the phone. This app does have that Buffer setting, but even set to huge (725ms) it still suffers from these cutouts. And the update that came out today.. well that just screwed it up even more...
UberMusic:
Smooth, looks pretty, can tell it's a complete rip from Zune so I know how to navigate it at least. Cutouts while navigating the phone weren't nearly as bad, or didn't happen. The problem with this app is that it doens't have an equalizer. I googled, and found out that Fede (many may know him from that scam app LPP) promised to implement an equalizer. That same dev also promised a re-write of LPP be the end of 2010 and look where LPP is at.. completely abandoned for this music app. With that history I won't buy his music app until the equalizer is implemented. But based on what he's shown with LPP I don't see that happening for 932750923 years.
WinAmp:
Loved it on my computers since middle school... But for the phone, the cut-outs are almost as bad as PlayerPro, and it also has a pretty crappy equalizer.
Anybody else know of a good/smooth music app, with no cutouts in music playback and a good equalizer?
Thanks!
What do you mean by cut out, I use pamp and really smooth no problem whatsoever

Music playback like stops/freezes whenever the screen turns off, or on, or when I unlock, or when I hit menu, or when I hit any button on the phone. If I OPEN something, like browser, it chops like crazy.
It's Depend on your phone & rom. I normally use power amp & never have the problems you mentioned. It never cut out except when receiving incoming sms or call receieved.

Try double twist. If you like it i'd highly advise buying to unlock all features.

Same problem with double-twist. Didn't even bother to check for an equalizer...
I guess the problem is with MIUI. Figured after years they'd at least have it compatible with music players that millions of people use..
Never have problems with PowerAmp here, either. Could the cutouts maybe be an issue outside of PowerAmp, like your memory card perhaps, considering that it looks like every app you use has them?
Probably a Rom issue, I have no such issues with either playerpro or poweramp

I had a similar problem a few phones back with HTC Hero and Desire. I had it underclocked on screen-off and an app-killer killing on screen off/memory killer. Both caused the music to "jump around" and/or kill the music. Underclocking sounds the more obvious issue here.
If not using either, make sure your SD card is class 4 or higher.
Poweramp had never failed me before, but now using google music on CM7 with DSP manager for the GMusic streaming...
Swyped from the past.
Discard this..
Google Music 4.0 with DSP Manager
I am using PowerAmp for an entire year and dont remember having a single cutout. You probably have a problem in your rom.
Yea I believe it might be a ROM issue, others in the ROM thread confirmed they also have this problem. I'm using the SD card that came with the phone, not sure what class it is...
Thanks for the tips!
ive tried all of the apps you mentioned except poweramp and none of them had "cutouts"

[Q] Given Priority to Winamp instead of Google Music? (non-rooted)

So when you hit play from a bluetooth device it seems to be pure luck as to which player will start on android.
Is there anyway to alter this behaviour? The phone in question isn't rooted, and won't be. Since this is the case I can only remove the updates to the Music player, but it's still there and will randomly take priority over winamp.
I've always experienced this no matter what media players I'm using. Sometimes it will just start playing on the regular app instead of the app i want

Solution
The Solution is: Install old winamp 1.1.1

How to Play Variable Speed Audiobooks 1.5X- 2.0X? - I need help finding an app.

So I am liking my Samsung Galaxy II more and more every day but one thing that drives me nuts is the inability to find a suitable app that willy play audiobooks at variable speeds.
I finally found a program that works for most podcasts. "Pocket Casts" with Presto player for viarable speed control.
There is on program call Xspeedplayer that works for playing audiobook files but there is no way to jump to different parts of the audiotrack. Say for example I listed to the book for 1hr going to and from home then read a little bit on my kindle well there is no way to jump ahead to where my reading left off.
So if anyone knows of a good audio player that works for audiobooks that allows for variable speed I would love to hear about it.
TIA
Hopefully if enough people star this Android issue Google will add it as a feature to Android
There is Nova Player which is mentioned in that thread which looks reasonably promising,
alternately Audio Speed Changer.
Or perhaps SFT AudioPlayer might work but not sure how good playback is?

I have been very happy with Presto Sound Library Open Beta - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aocate.presto&hl=en
which works well with Akimbo Audiobook Player - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.akimbo.abp
and Pocket Casts - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=au.com.shiftyjelly.pocketcasts
So there is a solution but it will cost you over $10 I agree it should be included free with the OS like iPhone etc.

@shortbus - I have Presto but disappointed that the app hasn't been updated in a while, as there is bug where if I get a phone call while listening to Pocket Casts / Presto, it doesn't gracefully hand over the audio to the phone app, and have to force-close it after the phone call ended. Running Android 4.1.2 Jellybean on a GNex. Curious if you have the same issue - cheers.

No problems here from like what you describe. I have had the program freeze on my but I am not sure if that is Presto or the Pocket casts program. I am running Jedi Mind Trick.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818305
But it has worked on all different builds and other programs.
Hope you figure out why it is happening.
