general questions from a new andriod user useing the Huawei U8651T - General Questions and Answers

Hi there, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this but I can't seem to post to the treads related to what about to ask.
I just got the t-mobile prism (aka: Huawei U8651T), Its my first android phone and a good step up from having used the nokia nuron 3250. I have to say I'm a little disappointed with the most simple things that this phone doesn't do and I'm already looking into at least rooting my phone if not installing a better rom (assuming there are better roms) and that is the purposed topic of this post.
I've read up on the "How to root Huawei U8651T http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1698905 and it seems easy enough to do but I want to make sure that rooting and/or flashing to a different rom will actually fix the small disappointments I've found in my phone. Here is the list...
1, Camera options suck in just about every way. There are pathetic presets to control the white balance and other setting. I've had more options on far lesser phones. Not to mention the poor interface in general.
2. the music player has extremely simple with no built in EQ at all. This one I did find a way to overcome with a small global eq but serously the built in stuff should at least have a preset eq like jazz, rock, bass, flat etc.
3. the alarm clock and texting sounds have to be tmo's preset stuff. I can't set either to a custom ringtone or mp3. Again I found a work around for the alarm clock but not the texting and all these extra programs is steeling away the little memory space this phone has.
4. and finally I have seen programs on the apps/programs list that I can't use or find anywhere else. I'm not talking about the ones that run in the background that run say the keyboard or hardware, I'm talking programs I should be able to use.The one that pops out first is the Sound Recorder. its on there but I can't find anyway to actually use it.
So here is my questions... Will rooting my phone give me a way to change some of these issues? Will installing a different rom?
I'm also instrested in knowing what the CyanogenMod 7.2 STABLE (2.3.7) 16-06-2012 rom is really like vs the stock rom and what other roms there are out there that will work on my phone. I use would like to hear from KrisM22 if your out there but I've love anyone's knowledgeable opinion. thanks for your help.

by rooting & installing CM7 you will solve all this problems coz CM7 provides a wide variety of functionality.

3. You can set custom ringtones and notification sounds very easily. Create a folder on sd card called "media" within that folder create another folder "audio" and within that create a folder called "ringtones" for ringtones and "notifications" for notification sounds.

I tried several different camera apps and it all defaulted to the presets the original app had. so is it hard wired into the hardware or just the roms programing ?

Hi brothers,
I've just been flashed Cy 7.2 on my T-mo prism. But i forgot to back up stock roms. That so bad. Does anyone here have a backup image or stock rom of T-mobile prism ? Please help me!!!

Well once I commit to doing this I'll be backing up mine that I can send along to you. But tell me having run the other rom how does your phone like it? Does it address the issues I've posted? Give me your review please

This rom works quite well for me -> http://www.mediafire.com/?zr5x3lb9xr0kvvf

more info
Cool can tell me more about it? Do a review on it for me please

Well, I just like the way the screens look with the rom...you have to manually install a camera app, music app, and file manager, because the ZaD!!RoM didn't come with them. Also, the phone would shut down occasionally due to overclocking, so I had to adjust that too.
I guess what I'm saying is the ZaD!!RoM is good if you like to do a lot of your own customizing/tweaking. Otherwise, try the Cyanogenmod rom.
Good luck!

Thank you so much for place the link on the stock rom. I am trying to recover the phone back to factory WITHOUT CWM as the boot loader. I am trying to follow instructions of how to reflash in the XDA forums but run into a brick wall for the update.app is not in the stock rom that you provided. Is there something you can do to help on this?
Thanks
I'm trying to follow veer1238 instructions but do not have the update.app. Help please!:crying:

Uh Oh!
I have a T-Mobile Prism that I need to unroot and turn it back into factory conditions. There is a problem though, when I flash the factory rom, the custom recovery flashes it then it says installation aborted. I really need to fix this since I formatted the /system. Thank you for your response.
Info:
Device: T-Mobile Prism U8651T
Custom Recovery: CWM-based Recovery v6.0.1.0
Rom: Cyanogenmod 7.2 UNOFFICIAL

Removing these apps(With Titanium backup) and installing play store alternatives is a good start but cm works too.
Poweramp is a good music app that lets you tune eq with the freq.
Stock roms usually suck until they are messed with.
(As you can see I like to modify stock to my whims and I dont like custom roms, only custom kernels)
You can try my tool in my signature because it has a rooting feature.
But if your running android 4.0 or above it wont root
In that case you will have to look for device specific methods.

[Q] Is there a Android app like "Activator: on the iPhone

Hello,
I was wondering if there was an Android app like Activator on the iPhone? I have searched to the best of my abilities regarding this question but have not found a clear answer. The closest I have come to finding this answer was the app "LaunchKey." However, it does not seem to fit what I am looking for.
Reason for this search is due to my brief episode with the iPhone 3g and yes I know...(after finding out, android system is definitely better in terms of customizing and freedom) Thus during that time I came upon this app called "Activator", which is basically amazing. Now that I am back using the android system I realized the only I miss about the iPhone was that app.
So if anyone can help that would be great! Thanks!
BTW:
Background information on the iPhone jailbreak app "Activator." Basically you can launch any apps and system actions via gestures or hardware buttons. (such as long-press, short-press, double tap,etc...)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464
and for gestures Im not entirely sure where I saw it or or what it was called but it does exist.
Reply
Thanks for the reply, however, I did stumble upon that app but it does not really support long press, short press, double tap and other various hardware buttons. As for gestures, I guess it does not matter as much as the hardware button configuration. Basically can a button have more functions than just one ie: home button-going to home. Thanks
I'm hoping that this app exists, as its one of the first apps I discovered years ago that was auto installed after jail breaking my previous iPhone. The app basically allows you customize a very large range of settings as shortcuts.
http://m.lifehacker.com/5899492/mak...hen-you-connect-or-disconnect-your-headphones
not strongly related but here's an app which I found very useful:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=tora.mamma.swipestart
Thanks!
Thanks for your input I however have found the app "SwipePad" to be extremely useful, albeit not the original application I was looking for but it does the job Thank you again!
really!!! Android is amazing, I think is like a pocket pc, but sometimes I miss my old iPhone when I remember cydia tweeks like Activator. :silly:

OMG This is what I want to say my Android Friends Iphone tweaks are more easy way to go, im wondering How can I get Activator !!! >> since 4 years im iphone user and recently bought Note 2 (still I have Iphone) this entire conversation is what im looking for Please help to get a tweaks like that even I looked Cydia substrate for Android mm no use as of know....
Widgets are great but you still have to unlock the phone and look at the screen and press it. With activator you can, for example, press the power button of the phone twice and that will initiate the flash light... this is much better when you are in need of the flash light quickly...I wish android had something like that...

I believe since the time I have posted this question to the present, there have been alternatives as well as actual implementations to the hardware tweaks. Currently, there are baked in hardware tweaks in custom ROM such as CM10.1 (lock screen long press buttons do variety of different things) or software programs such as swipepad, or Trigger app (Both of which I use a lot)
My current ROM CM10.1 has the capability of accessing the flashlight from the longpress of home button while in lockscreen. Or even changing music volume and music track by volume press/longpress. This I consider the equivilent of what you were referring to.

**ATTENTION: any of the information I have provided are based on my own experience/knowledge/research. IT IS IMPERATIVE(important) that you do your own research to double check my information and advice. If ever in DOUBT, ask/research around. (or dont follow through is usually the safest option) YOU are ultimately responsible for what you do with YOUR device, if you don't believe this, please do not continue dabbling in this area.
You should be able to do that, to "unroot" your phone, but it depends on the device as well as the instructions that other developers/rooters have given. (meaning not 100% probable, you need to do more research)
*JUST NOTICED YOU SAID YOU ARE ROOTED
-To get Stock ROM, just download the appropriate ROM zip files and then flash it.
-if you want to get warranty back, you will have to follow instructions for your device on how to unroot. (if even possible)
Follow the instructions given on the cyanogenmod website, usually involves flashing and wiping. (sounds like you have a samsung phone )
Based on question 3 statement, I believe you have to do MORE research. (as this is an extremely basic idea of rooting, unless of course I misread or the question was mistyped) Here is where you can start:CM about
Again, you have to do MORE research yourself, google is your friend for that. There is no one size fits all unrooting method.
Cyanogenmod (also known as CM) has an software release life cycle. (not counting the M snapshot nor experiments) You have Stable>Nightly> Release Candidates(RC).
Taken from this Forum
bassmadrigal:
Stable is after all the features desired by the CM devs have been put in and the code has been tested. Snapshots (M builds) are builds done roughly once a month that has had some testing to make sure things are mostly working and released to the public. These are the first builds that allow official bug reports on the project manager site, https://jira.cyanogenmod.org. Nightlies are automated builds that are built, well, every night. There is no human interaction with these and they are largely there just to see if the code added throughout the day will compile. As far as the devs are concerned, there are no bad builds with the nightlies, because if it doesn't build, that is news to let them know that something is screwed up in the code. They don't accept any bug reports on these builds.
Generally, the nightly builds, while extremely experimental and considered bleeding-edge, tend to be relatively stable and mostly bug-free. Many people use the nightlies as their so-called daily-driver, meaning that any bugs that they may have aren't so severe that they want to switch to a different version. For my Nexus 4, as soon as I got it I switched to a nightly build and haven't had any bugs pop up.
Also, all builds are full builds, so if you switch to a nightly, you aren't required to flash every single nightly. You can do it as you see fit. I've been known sometimes to flash a build every day, but then I've gone a month in between updating. Just grab the latest version you want to flash and flash that one.

[Q] Any way to make things more simpler??

So I got the Nexus S, i9023, after spending a good amount of time trying to figure how to do the Root, CWR, ROM, I still can't get things to work properly.
My main issues with the Nexus are the camera while recording cause it sucks!, the media playback controls on the lock screen and the speed of the unit in general, I mean N4G.com feels as if the phone was using a browser from the middle ages!!!!
I've been going around the forums but is kinda hard to read along threads of 100 pages of posts, not a guide with straight answers, just for the steps I have managed to accomplish I had to use Youtube, Google and another 4 pages + these forums to make sense of what's first and then go on "trial & error" cause some of the steps have updates on different pages that others don't even mention.
So, I was able to Root, CWR and then install CM7, then I reverted to stock cause the Market is gone.....lovely....but is even better afterwards.....
So the phone works on the stock Android again, but now I can't make the phone to boot on recovery again so I can use the CWM options, I can't make RM to install or run anything, the phone will simply does nothing...and if I try on flashing the Clockworkmod recov then I get a "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!"........and I have SU installed.........
Btw, how do I install a kernel??? or flash the camera (if that's possible)....
Thx to any kind soul who could share it's own experience....
I recommend you do more reading and research before you flash anything. Cm7 does not come with market for legal reasons, you have to flash it separately. To flash a kernel you just download and flash it in recovery.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
In your current situation you need to use fastboot to reflash recovery and use recovery to reflash superuser.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
there is a one click root option which i keep on my desktop. way more than one click but i it does everything pretty much for u. try doing that.
Ns4g.com is bad because they have terribly coded flash content.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
Hello all, thx for the replies, N4G can't be that bad since the issue repeats itself at other pages like cnn, espn or even worst if u try eltiempo.com (newspaper from Colombia), the last one lags horrible on pc using FF and doesn't even load as full page on the Nexus or my N8, that page is so badly designed that even the mobile version sucks (problem is the news back home are kinda best shown there....).
In any case, as I said before, "Trial & Error", I already have installed CM7, Liquid SR, Miui and Oxygen, loved Oxygen, kept Miui, Liquid is a nice idea but needs work and CM7 is a bit rough.
So far I've learned how to restore from an image of a previous ROM (kept my original backed up in case!!!), also how to reinstall SU in case I have to go back to stock, how to install a new kernel (thx to Google and not the Search in the forums!!!), I did also overclocked my NS to 1.2G and seems pretty stable.
Things I still don't like and will look in the future to solve are the issues with the camera, Miui fixes part of the issues with lag while recording, I got a snag during a test recording made today, also the controls are not that amazing for the camera, no Zoom???, and the Gallery is not a plain gallery but mainly a file browser which makes it confusing if u forget what folder ur supposed to check...
Also the issue with the battery not hitting 100%...kinda silly....
In all it's been good but the time spent is a pain, mainly cause there is no explanation about how to apply the files, what order, etc, is nice to find things here in XDA but is rather annoying to have to use Google to find things around...
Thx again for the replies!!!

[Q] some questions about the galaxy 3

I just bought this phone and I really like it, though there are some things I would like to ask you guys.
1) I don't have any data plan and don't want to have any for the moment, is disabling the packet data and data roaming options enough? I've also enabled GSM mode only.
2) I've read many people saying to delete some battery stats and charge the phone in a particular way. Do I really need to do that? I usually just wait till there's little battery (about 15%-5%) and then charge it.
My understanding is that Li-ion batteries can be charged at any point, is this correct? I also noted that the battery percentage in about phone sometimes is different than what the battery icon shows. Also, I normally off the phone when charging and at night, I leave it on (in flight mode) at night only if I have an alarm in the morning.
3) To move my music to the SD card I created a music folder because there wasn't one, is this normal? I had the phone format the card before doing it.
Also I have 2 problems with the album art: almost every time I enter the music player the album art has to reload; the other problem is that sometimes the album art are mixed up i.e. they appear on the wrong song/album, they appear correctly on my PC.
4) I'm not sure if I should put a custom ROM. It sounds easy but I don't really do much with my phone. I just call, send texts and listen to music. First I wanted cyanogenmod but it's in alpha so I was thinking of Kyrillo's ROM 9.5. It would be nice to get rid of bloatware and have better battery. The thing is that Kyrillo's Rom seems to have extra stuff while I would prefer the stock 2.2 Android ROM. I don't really know what to do. I've also read that some custom ROMs have better audio driver which I'm interested in. By the way I'm currently using the phone without a google account, maybe I will decide to connect one, don't think I really need it though.
5) I have set the vibration to be on in silent mode, but I would like to have it in "normal mode" only for texts but not for calls, is there a way (without apps)?
Thanks for any answers.
Ok man,i am hete only to answer your fourth question, wich i am completely shure.install a custom rom.do it.kyrillos is good, but kyorarom is the best.root your phone, and remove any system app that you dont use.that will free your internal memory and ram.
Use supercharger script for increasing ram also.if you need a good battery life then use non oc kernels.use some build.prop tweaks also.
Click the thanks button,i wrote all this from my phone

Well your first three questions are of beginner level. You new to Android I guess. I will suggest you put a data plan and connect to your Google account and get going in the market a bit. Apps and stuff.
And the battery stats thing, there is no need to do it. After 3 4 full charge cycles, the battery adjusts itself up.
The last question, yes go for a custom ROM. They are better than your normal stock ROMs. There is an ODIN guide in the General section please refer to it. I won t suggest CM7 as you are new. But after some time on Froyo, CM7 definately worth a try. I use it as a daily ROM. Only few more main modules left.
And for the vibration question. No there is no way without using an app I guess. I really don t remember the Froyo MMS.apk notification settings. Better just use GoSMS.
Enjoy the phone. Cheers.

Thanks to you too.
Yes, this is my first Android and touch screen phone.
Good to know that thing about the battery, I was reading on wikipedia that actually it's a bad idea to let the battery go on low levels.
Link (I can't post complete URLs because I'm new): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-ion_battery#Prolonging_battery_pack_life
Regarding a custom ROM, I think I'm going to keep Samsung's Froyo for now and get used to the phone, in the meantime I'm sure the port of Cyanogenmod will improve. Then I'll see which custom ROM to use.
Does anyone know how to resolve #3?
I havent had the music problem.well,i dont go to albums much.just create playlists,it will be easier that way on your phone. And yea, disturbed forever! \m/

1. no you dont need to do anything else...
2.you can charge your battery at any time.there is no need to do that at any particular point..and also there is no need to clear the battery stats ..let itbe the way it is.
3.about album arts..did u get them by any app or they were included in the songs.. ? i ve never faced this btw.
4.you can put a custom rom if you want to make it faser and also you can try custom kernels. anyways stock froyo is also a nyc option.
5. i am afraid there is no setting for that without any app !!
I never faced #3. I think the album arts got mixed up in ur songs folder
about the album art problem, i suggest you try a different music player from the market (mixzing is a good choice). That did the trick for me.
Be warned though!!!
The quality of the output of the stock music player is great and unsurpassed by any other app i have tried so far (about 10 and counting...). Given that i mainly use the phone as an mp3 player, that's rather disturbing as the stock player is mediocre at best.
My best guess is that only the stock player takes advantage of the DNSe.

Perfect.
I hope that the battery percentage and the icon fix themselves because for example now, the percentage is 80% but from the icon it looks more like 90%. There may be a time where I think I have 20% but in reality it's 10%, not good!

I manually added them with a program called mp3tag, they work fine on my PC.
I noticed that if I leave the music player open in the background (home button) the covers stay, if I use the back button they don't because the player gets closed.
Considering that you guys don't get this problem I don't know what could be the cause of this. Maybe I should put the music in the root of the SD card rather than in a folder?
The only alternative I found is to use the "My Files" application which shows the music in a list without album art, it's good enough for now.
when you get familiar with phone get yourself a try with cm7 rom beacuse dsp setting and mp3 sound are just amazing over froyo

Well I already have put all the album art, I'll just leave it as it is.
Thanks to both of you.

[Q] Tediously specific questions

Hey XDA!
I rooted my Infuse months ago and flashed a custom ROM I found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1412957) with little trouble. ZEUS has worked great ever since and rarely fails for my purposes. I have a Limited Data plan (200 MB/Month) with AT&T and no warranty to worry about voiding
Anyway, I have some specific questions that seem to be affected by the conditions I've described. I apologize in advance, I'm by no means an expert and would appreciate any guidance offered
1) Being that I'm rooted and running a custom ROM, the usual methods of changing certain preferences are complicated. Specifically, how do I enter the "saved words" or "dictionary" that autocorrect uses for inputted text? I'd like to add/edit/delete words. Is there a method? With the stock ROM, it was pretty simple, but now I don't see any similar options when I'm in the settings menu.
2) I think Swype isn't supported by the new ROM because I no longer had the option of selecting it once I rooted and I do find I miss it lol. Any way to restore it without downloading an app?
3) Recently, I tried paying for an app* in the Market (or Play Store or whatever you wanna call it, but it'll always be the Market to me lol) and found that the only way to do that was through using Google Wallet. I found that Google Wallet wasn't listed in the Play Store when I searched the exact words "Google Wallet" and somewhere in this effort, concluded that ZEUS was too outdated to support the app. I think a prompt from the Play Store confirmed this, but I'm still not sure. Isn't ZEUS just a variation of Gingerbread, anyway? So, since I'm rooted with a custom ROM, am I ineligible from purchasing in the Market?
4*) APPS: Do you guys even "buy" apps? I'm vaguely familiar with the idea of "cracked apps" but have no idea how to safely procure any.
5) Generally, should I just flash to a newer ROM? ZEUS has worked pretty well, but the above issues (the most pressing being 1 and 4) have made me rethink ZEUS. That was months ago, is it now outdated? Any good ICS ROMS (unported, because I don't like dealing with the bugs that inevitably follow ported ROMS) available?
Any help would be a appreciated, I'm sorry this was such a long post and I did scour the forums as best I could before posting this thread.
Thanks a lot!

1) Don't know about that. It's never been an issue for me. In general you'll find the settings for that type of stuff by opening the settings in the keyboard. But in general I think most people add words one at a time as it is necessary... I don't know if you can access the whole dictionary in an easy way, and even if you could... why?
2) Swype is an app. You don't have it, you can't use it. I would just reinstall.
3) ??? No. You shouldn't have any issues like this. Never happened to me; can't think of a reason why. Maybe problem with data connection? Maybe you should install a different ROM and start from scratch.
4) You'll get in trouble for even mentioning that, probably. Buy your apps, support the devs, period.
5) Yes, IMHO. ZEUS has been surpassed (again, IMHO.) I would run AEON or Vagabond for GB... both stable, great pieces of work. ICS still has room to grow and progress to be made, I think. There are some great choices there, and exciting features too. ParanoidAndroid, RemICS, jblparisi's... great stuff, (also none of it would be possible without jt1134 and Entropy) but I always end up going back to GB for the time being because of speed and stability.
Flash a new ROM, I would suggest. If your problems persist... search xda or ask.
But to me it sounds like your ROM just isn't working for you and you need something a little different...

Thank you SO MUCH for that comprehensive and helpfully speedy reply! Definitely will flash one of the newer ROMs you mentioned after I do some reading up. That, I think, will resolve most of these issues
In regards to why you would access the inputted text dictionary: to add/edit/delete words that appear as suggestions for autocorrect. I have several recurring words that are either in caps lock or misspelled ("you" becomes "yoy" way too often because I accidentally saved it one day). With the stock ROM and most others, accessing the setting is pretty straightforward. Settings/Language and Input/Dictionary or something like that.
In any case, I'll just flash something else, it's time for a change. Thanks again!

ROM advice

Hi all, I've just acquired a refurbished MT4GS to use as my main Android phone. It comes with the Stock ROM and I would like to try some others and decide whether to change or keep it.
I personally prefer stability and full functionality over latest versions, I've read that some ROMS have issues with video recording at FullHD for instance, and I would try to avoid this kind of things. The stock camera App is very good and if possible I would like to change to a ROM that keeps it fully functional. Anyone could tell me whether such a ROM exists or should I better keep the stock ROM just removing as much bloatware as possible? (all the T-Mobile stuff is completely useless to me)...

For the best picture quality, keep the stock if at all possible (or use MikTouch). Custom ROM's have a tendency of not taking full advantage of the camera hardware.
If you find you need to upgrade to use a specific app, I always liked TBalden's CM 10.1. You would want to download a third party camera (I used UCam Ultra Camera quite religiously) to get some of the quality back.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, so far I've unlocked bootloader, s-off'd, and tried CM9.1 and MikTouch 0.7 (I think I will follow your advice and will stay with this one).
BTW, When I place a big .zip ROM file in the root folder of the SD Card, CWM takes a looooong time before it shows the message "back menu button enabled" and becomes functional, I'm talking about minutes. Is this behaviour normal?

I never encountered that myself, but if it is the result of pushing the file to the SD (adb), I wouldn't be surprised as file transfer is slow in some conditions anyway (take CM9.1 for example - it's notorious for that) and CWM is probably on the wait for the file to be ready.
