I think I've had the same issue. To clarify by dead do you mean powered off? Several times I've put my phone on to charge at night and woken up to a phone that is powered off.

No her phone is not rooted. Its bone stock. She's had it since launch day. I've never herd of a phone shutting off during charging. Unless she's doing something that she don't know.

Maybe try charging it during the day and keep an eye one he notification led. If it starts flashing alternating green/amber then it is overheating. That would be my guess anyways.

Any reason why it would be over heating? Bad charger or battery?
I've never experienced my evo over heating and its even overclocked to 1115ghz.

Is she plugging into a wall outlet to charge?
If so, I would try a different plug. It's possible the location she is plugging into could have a bad outlet (tripped breaker, etc).
Also, can you verify that the charger and cord are working?

Im gonna check out the outlet shes using and what not. I may even trade her my Evo charger and cord for hers and see what happens. But if anything we just may go exchange it for another one. Best buy gives you 30 days.
I also have this issue with my Thunderbolt. I've tried different outlets and different chargers. I have yet to figure out any sort of pattern. It just happens when I get up some mornings. When it finishes starting up its just fine.
I had the same exact problem, I actually made me late for work. But who cares.
It was dead battery and all. Phone wouldnt even come on after plugging it in. Needed minimal charge to even turn on.
I found the cable and charger were the problem. I am now using my charger from my N1 with out any problem. I used the same charger for my N1 and low and behold I had a dead N1 in the morning. scrap the ****ty charger and purchase an after market or go to VZ store and ***** and moan and possibly they'll spot you a new one.
Definitely a charger issue though, at least for me.

Thanks for the info... Like i said im gonna try my Evo charger and see if it works. But i may just have her go exchange it for a whole new phone and everything.
definately seems like a bad charger.
Should be pretty easy to find out though. Just plug it in and bring up the battery widget. keep an eye on it, and see what happens..
couldn't find any info so i'll see if i can hopefully get some answers
been running my inspire using Existz's ICS rom via the ace hack kit. no problems. i went and picked up an infuse 4g and decided to use it. so had that rooted and running. yesterday backed up everything on the inspire and removed the sim and sd card started using them in the infuse. was still playing games and such on the inspire. here's were things started to act weird. plugged in both phone on the wall charger and powered off the inspire. well it kept rebooting in recovery. i'd go down to power off and it'd come back on. did this maybe 3 times and then finally stayed off. today went to show a friend that was interested in it and it would not power on. no led light, nothing. plugged it in and still nothing. put in the spare battery and no led light or anything. tried to put it into recovery, nadda. put the sim and sd card in thinking it may make a difference, nope. so i'm not getting any power.
any help is appreciated.

If the phone is not booting at all and even trying a spare battery is not showing signal of life, then take it to a service centre. When the phone is plugged is showing the led light?
No, no led light anymore. Unsure of how whatever happened happened.

I have no idea about that...but send an email to HTC to see what they tell you...
Try letting it sit and charge for a while second try to boot into hboot. I'm assuming that you rooted your phone so going through HTC for repair is not an option. I had a similar issue I ended up booting into hboot and then flashing a stock rooted img and starting all over with my phone.
Since your computer recognizes the device, did you try to send it a reboot command via adb?

No I did not. Not sure how to to do it that way, but I'm sure I can find out how.
After reading a couple threads where people have had the same issue, I left the battery in it and placed it on the nightstand. It started to vibrate a few times and when I hit power I get a solid red led. Will have to search and see what that means.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
It sounds like it could be a bad battery. Given the red light, what has me wondering in the vibration prior to you pushing the power button. It almost sounds like the phone shutting down from low battery, but you said it wasn't on.
Sent from my Inspire 4G running AOSPX-BR7
Just a little note on Android phones. If you let them die completely they will not charge the battery from a PC or computer of any kind. The ports on a PC only provide 500ma max and it require at least 1 amp to charge a dead battery. That can only be accomplished by the wall charger that was supplied with the phone. If you are using another charger make sure it says on it that is can supply at least 1 amp or 1000ma any thing less will not charge a dead battery. Also note if the battery is completely dead, then the phone will not charge any way. The phone has to be able to power up and load the OS in order to charge. Androids use a software based charger that does not know how to charge unless the phone can boot and preload the the boot part of the OS. You may need an external charger the battery alone can be placed in or buy a new battery as they will usually have enough of a charge to get you going.
As the previous poster said, it sounds like you have a bad cable from the beginning and all you did is discharged it completely. Get a new cable and try the wall charger. If that does not work then spend 20 bucks and get a new battery.

vibrated a couple times when i was in bed. got up and hit the power button and just the red light would come on, nothing else. generally when i had a low battery the phone would boot up, then shut off. not in this case

well i have 2 batteries, 2 different plug adapters, 3 different cords and a car charger. tried six different ways charging from a wall adapter and flip flopped batteries as i changed cords and plugging it into the car charger. each cord and the car charger works with my infuse and worked with the inspire that day. battery was at 3/4 when i plugged it in. i guess could try a new batter, but i'm doubtful.
Searched all over but never came across a similar issue posted anywhere.
When I connect the charger while the phone is on... it "shows charging". But is does charge "real slow" .
Then when I "take off the charger" , It "still shows charging"(lightning sign).
After I "reboot" to get rid of that , it boots up with red "Low battery". But it doesn't turn off for a while ,which hints the battery itself has no issue.
Whereas when I connect in and then disconnect the USB from my "PC" , it still indicates the USB connected sign.
When charging while the phone is "off", it shows charging (with the large battery sign) but the charged level keeps @ 0%.
PS: If I keep the phone turned off while the battery is inside for 2,3 days.. the batteries drain without any clue , the phone won't turn on.
Tried all factory reset & calibrating stuff , I start to wonder if this is an issue with my USB port or the battery connectors. I might be needing experts help ..Please help
[I do not hv any warranty left for this]
Maybe you need to try a new battery. That's all.

Yeah thnx bud, I could try that If I know for certain . Else it would be a waste.
What worries me is the issue with the "USB connection to PC". Which has nothing to with the battery circuit.
Have you tried another cable?

The issue seems to be probably with either the USB cable or the port.try another cable to be sure..

Discharge while off sounds like a bad battery. Does it lose charge if you charge it and take it out of the phone?

Yeah tried another cable . Made no difference . I think I should try replacing the port . Hope that's not very expensive .
Updates for my problem, (still no clue though).
I messed up with some MOTOMIZER app and happend to change the dalvik heap size to default(don't remember the value) . Just after this the phone boots only up to "Rethink possible" screen.
It won't let me flash via fast boot , "battery low cannot program" comes up.
Then I bought an external charger and a 3rd party battery . Fully charged the battery via the ext; charger and went to fast boot. No surprises , "battery low cannot program" came up again.
It seems the phone does not recognize the full voltage of the battery , even it's fully charged.
Now If anyone with some clue, pls help me out here.
I would suggest flashing with a factory cable. With it you pull the battery and the cable powers the phone so you can flash. I have one and it's been very handy. Give me a little while and I'll post a couple of links. You can make your own or buy one from xda member sKoRpn for like $10 shipped in the U.S. if you dont want to wait on me jump over to the kindlefire general forum.

Nice..Really appreciate man. I really didn't know about these factory cables. But just now I did my research.
Then again I doubt whether my phone recognizes the voltage. Anyways , definitely worth a shot.
I found some cables for sale. There are not recommended specially for Atrix2 but for Kindle Fire , Atrix , Droid Razr etc . Will those be compatible with A2 ??
Yeah man, It works on all moto phones and the kf. Really useful when you don't have a full charge on the phone.

Sounds to me like you need to get a replacement phone via warranty. Possibly the battery too. If you are with AT&T call the warranty department. If not, then call motorola and try and use their 1 year warranty to get this fixed.
Hi.
I've a Droid 2 Global. The problems started when the phone gets wet for a rain. It was a storm, and I pull out the battery, because I was sodden and I don't want this to happen.
The thing is, that even when I did so, and leave it all night alone, the next day I pull the battery on, but the phone doesn't turn. I conect the charger and it said the phone have 5% battery. Inmediatly rise up to 20, later do 60, and then to 100%. In less that 1 minute. I think the battery was damage, so I bought a new one.
Just to be sure, I did conect a red wire-black wire, to the phone, from the USB. I did it once it deads while bad flashing, so I guess it'll be fine. I does turn on, and everything, so I turn it off, and pull of the wires and the battery.
I bought a new battery today, doesn't seem OEM, but chinesse instead, I couldn't find any better. But know the phone doesn't charge at all. I shows a "?" in the charge screen.
It turn on, I don't know how, and the same "?" was in the battery icon in the notification bar.
Go Power recognize a fixed percent of battery, and recognize while I plug the charge cord, but I doesn't charge and turn off itself.
Any help?
The question mark? Motorola being stupid and not allowing 3rd part batteries. Happened with my Motorola Flipside.

I'll delete it. Thanks for fast answer. I'll put the another one back and charge, same happen. It turn on, for like 2 hours, a then it turn off. It doesn't get any charge while it was on the phone.
The phone shows the same "?" in the battery charge mode, and in the notification bar.
You say with an OEM battery will work? How I know it's really OEM? If doesn't work, what?
Againg, thanks for you fast answer.
If its OEM it will have a Motorola logo on it, as 3rd parties are not allowed to put it on their batteries.
If it doesn't work, then unfortunately your phone is water damaged. But I can almost guarantee its because the battery is chinese
Sent from my DROID2 using xda premium
I notice that I can charge the battery, if it's off, but it just doesn't show. I doesn't show how much is left, or anything.
You think this is a OEM battery to buy it?
PS: My father said to me to put the phone in rice, and it will absorb the water in the phone, and battery, so i did it. But the phone it's acting the same.
If its water damage, so it won't charge or show the battery left like never right?
It's there anyway to fix it? Changing parts with a Droid 2-not global will work? It's less expensive that the Global version, and I'm don't want to expent a lot of money on it.
BTW! Really thanks for the time you spend answering.

Changing parts is a hard task, and I doubt you should try it unless you are experienced.
Water damage can take on many forms, but usually true water damage destroys hardware and the phone cannot be turned on. Since your phone is perfectly fine, but just won't read battery, I'm stil betting on the chinese battery. You even said it charges when the phone is off, but when it is in it doesn't? Motorola prett much told the phone to ignore the battery if it is not OEM. Otherwise, why would it still charge when off?
Clues lead up to to Motorola and their older policy of not allowing 3rd party batteries. I've had this happen to me when I bought a chinese battery.

I recently got a microusb to usb female cable and was playing around with it on my s3. I wanted to see if the s3 could power a laptop cooling fan (Im a curious guy) and plugged in the usb cooling pad. The pad worked to my surprise but it suddenly shut off. I look at the s3 and the s3 is off too. I try turning it back on but that didnt work. I try taking the battery out and then turning it on but that didnt work. I plugged it into a charger and tried turning it on but that didnt work either. I even tried booting it into download mode and that didnt work. It would be really nice if someone could help me because im freaking the ****s out right now. Thanks
When you put it in the charger, did you give it at least 5 minutes to get a charge? Put it back in the charger and wait a little bit.
I just plugged it in for a few minutes and the phones just seems to get hot and still refuses to turn on
I wonder if the cooling fan tried taking too much power from the S3...
You may have fried the S3 battery or something.
Just a guess
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Do you know someone else with an S3 that you could borrow a battery from? I would also think you may have damaged the battery and that would be the quickest way to test for that.
Are you getting any kind of vibration feedback when trying to power it on? I had a similar issue when I used an under powered usb charger. It drained it to the point it wouldnt even boot up and got hot. however, I did have to let charge normally for quite a while. good luck
Pull the battery then put it back in. Ley it charge for an hour. Then try going into recovery. Mine wouldn't turn on one day ( I wasn't doing any experimental stuff though) but that's what fort me running. Once I was on recovery I just selected reboot system and it fired right up.
