Android noobie and first time poster. I have an LG P990 unlocked phone with 2.3.4 stock rom. I have rooted it and have become somewhat familiar with the android system. However, I have just messed up big time. I was using "Root Uninstaller Pro" to freeze unwanted apps and being very careful, but whatever it was that I froze last, made my display disappear completely. My screen is black!!! The only display that I get is boot animation, unlock screen and status bar pull down. I would love to undo that last step, but am helpless without access to the Icons. Is there anything I can try? I stupidly have NOT made a backup with CWM. Please help.
Go to Google play on your computer, search for any launcher (go launcher, launcher pro, holo launcher, adw launcher, etc.).
Install from your computer, and select the phone you want it to install on. Watch as it downloads and installs on your phone. When the status bar status says its been installed, tap the home button.

Ok First off hello and thank you all for your outstanding newb service you have provided me with . I recently purchased a DX and with the help of you all I have Rooted, Deodexed and customized the hell out of the damn thing (newb level). I am currently running apex. My question is how do I disable the Tranq launcher and enable Launcher Pro? I have uninstalled and reinstalled launcher pro multiple times however, I can not run it. When I first installed the apex rom (after 928 black glass) It asked me what I would like to use as my default launcher, I selected Tranq and checked the remember this box (thats not what its called but you get the idea) thinking I would be able to run Launcher Pro if in fact I did not like Tranq. When I try to "launch" LauncherPro through astro it gives me the following error Activity Not Found. Astro is the only way I can find Launcher Pro even after install. I just scroll to the install, select it and click "launch". Thank you and I apologize for the crazy post (Im multitasking right now, typing with one hand feeding my baby girl with the other) Any ideas?
Do you have root explorer or titanium backup? If so check to see if launcher pro is installed. Of it is you can remove stock launcher.

Yes I have titanium backup pro but I dont see Tranq launcher on there. The only launcher I see is Launcher Pro. Should I uninstall Launcher Pro with titanium? Will that help?
You could try Home Switcher
http://www.appbrain.com/app/home-switcher/ymst.android.homeswitcher
I don't think it lets you set a default home in Froyo (2.2), but it will let you switch to another home.
Switch to LauncherPro and remove/rename the one you have

I agree Home switcher is the fastest and easiest way to switch between different homescreens/Launchers. And FYI is does in fact let you set a specific one as your default in Froyo.

You need to go Settings - Applications - Manage Applications, and then select Tranq launcher. Once done, scroll down and click on "Clear Defaults". Now, when you hit the home button again, you should be asked which launcher you want to use. Or use Home Switcher.
Alright, I have fixed the problem with the help of all you. Thanks guys!
I am very happy with the Launcher that comes with the Atrix 2. Why would I purchase or download a different one?
Ermmmm... Well first off, customisability and... nothing more?
If that launcher fits your needs then keep it
Just to have more options......
I'm switched but now am back to running stock.

Customizability and tons of more options. With an aftermarket launcher, you can pretty much tweak the look and feel of your device to suit your needs and desires. You can make it look like "your" device. It doesn't hurt anything to install one of the free launchers and try it out. I would actually recommend it. I personally use LauncherPro but ADW and GoLauncher are pretty good choices as well. If they don't suit your needs then there are many other options on the market. If none of them spark your interest then the stock launcher may be your launcher of choice. It's all about options and choices...Take that iPhone guys!!!
I was fine with the stock launcher with one exception...I cannot stand the horizontal page scrolling for the app drawer. If I wanted my phone to behave like an iPhone I would have kept my iPhone.
So I use ADW or Zeam and got the vertical scrolling back.
In case anyone cared, ADW EX is one of the 10 cent apps on the market today. I typically use Go Launcher, but I'll try out ADW again. Customization is always cool with a launcher.
Most helpful reply, lilhaiti. I am not familiar with Launchers, new to Android, but quick to learn. Thanks!
Sorry if I hijack the thread, but today I installed the ADW Ex and I don't know how to switch back to the original launcher.
Can anyone give me a hand?
I have not found a way to switch without uninstalling ADW. There used to be (still is?) a "home switcher" app in the market. I have used it in the past on other phones I've owned. I don't know if that would work on our phones or not.
The home switcher app should work. Otherwise, you can go to manage apps from settings, select the launcher and remove default. Once you hit your home button again, it will ask you to select your default again.

D'oh! I totally forgot about the remove default option. Using an iPhone for 7 months made me dumb.
Thanks for the answers. I went to app manager and under ADW the option "clear defaults" is greyed (not available) and it says "No defaults set".
Edit: I just tried the home switcher app and it doesn't work either, I can "launch" the original launcher but when I put "set as default" the app crashes.
Do you think if I uninstall ADW I would go back to the original launcher?

I would assume that uninstalling adw would let you choose the stock launcher the next time you hit your home button.

This should be true. For some reason with this phone when you install a third party launcher it automatically sets that launcher to default. So by removing ADW you should get the stock launcher back.
I don't know much about this launcher, but ADWLauncher EX is on sale for $0.10 on the Android Market ONLY today. If you want to try it, tonight is the time to get it.
P.S- There's a useful free tool called "HomeSmack" that lets you toggle between multiple launchers at once.

Really works and it does so fast, clean and easy. I think it's the only app available on the Play Store that actually does this WITHOUT breaking the apps.
GREAT JOB!
Wish the UI was cleaner, based on ICS design elements.
Thanks!

Works great. Just one thing, when I tried to hide SIM Toolkit, it makes my phone lose the signal n when it got the signal back, SIM Toolkit appear again on my app drawer.

Guess I must be doing something wrong...?
Great idea, this app!
However, I don't get the option to "hide" a particular item...
All it offers for me - when long-pressing an app - is "Clear data", "Freeze" or "Uninstall"...
What am I doing wrong/missing?

The freeze option would allow you to hide all icons and completely disable an app but this probably isn't what you want...
Short press the app to transition into the "Details" view at which point you'll see a list of icons associated with the application. Short press the icons you want to show/hide to check them and then click the "Show/Hide Icon(s)" button to process the operation.
After hiding/showing icons some launchers will require you to reboot before they actually show/hide.
I've installed it and when I run it, It asks for root permissions, which I click allow, but then the app just sits there with the spinning circle and "Asking for root permissions" It's been like that for about 10min so I think it's stuck
On a Sony Xperia Arc, rooted gingerbread 2.3.4
Anything I can try?

You should try installing BusyBox. See if that helps.

Haven't seen/heard of this before. My first suggestion would be to exit out and retry. If that doesn't work you can PM me here or email [email protected] (better option since it dings my phone ) and I'll try and help you resolve it.

I had the same problem here. I restartet the Device and it works now.
this is awesome, i've been looking for something like this since ditching non-stock launchers. Question, will uninstalling undo anything I hid? or do i need to do this before uninstalling to prevent apps from permanently being hidden? I also noticed that hiding the icons this way prevents them from showing up when searching on the Evo.

This application modifies system settings to hide the icons or freeze applications. They will continue to be hidden/frozen after uninstalling so you should unhide them first or reinstall the application when you need to restore them.
I installed this because it sounded like it would hide the icons but still let me use the apps. I spent about 10 minutes going through my apps and hiding them.
I hid my Apex launcher and after I exited the app the system freaked the **** out going to a few other apps and then finally the default CM9 launcher when I hit the home key.
Also it doesn't highlight everything I check to be hidden in blue. So I had to go through and unhide everything just to be safe, taking another 10 minutes to sort through my app list trying to remember what I ticked off. Around 500 apps, not fun.

Technically it disables the Activity associated with the icon which does in fact make it unusable while hidden. Beyond a launcher with the capability to hide icons this is the only way to do it.

For most launchers this would be fine as separate Activities are created for the "Settings" and "Launcher" functionalities. Unfortunately this is not the case with Apex launcher and I sent them an email a while back suggesting a change.
In general care should be taken while hiding launchers and system apps (titles in red). Maybe I should do something more than just the red text to indicate caution should be taken. Maybe a warning prompt with an option to disable it for those that like to live dangerously ;-)

Hmm I haven't heard of this issue but will definitely look into it. The Activities (icon rows) are not cached and are loaded when you enter the details screen so they should represent the current state (ie: blue = hidden).
In the next few days I'll be putting out an updated release that will contain filtering which would have made it easier to locate what you hid. Sorry for your troubles.
Just uploaded version 1.0.5. Only change is to filter Apex Launcher from the list of available applications since it doesn't like being hidden. As always shoot me an email at [email protected] and I'll be more than happy to help.
I assume that pretty much any launcher is going to react the same way if it's the active launcher and you're hiding it.
Anyway thanks for the quick response.
Hey guys. Two new unknown icons showed up on my mom's phone. In the attached screenshot you can see an icon for "App Store" and NetSpend. She's using my old T-Mobile G2 with CM 7.1.0.
She says she only installed two applications recently (sorry I can't post links yet)
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tripadvisor.tripadvisor - tripadvisor
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dk.ffpFunnyAnimalSounds - some ringtone app
The second one looked pretty shady so I uninstalled it. This didn't remove the icons so I tried tripadvisor and the icons were still there.
Neither of these show up in the launcher draw or the list of applications in the settings menu, only on the desktop. She has both Go launcher and ADW installed and they are present on both. Long pressing on the icons doesn't really give me much info. I'm lost as to were to start looking for were these icons came from. I could just remove them but I'm afraid of what changes I might not be aware of.
Any ideas?
Download titanium back up, and look for apps which aren't familiar and uninstall through there, they most probably won't show up on manage apps hence why I said titanium backup

Make a factory restore.
What I want my launcher (Home Screen App) to do is the same Surelock does, what I mean by this is I want to activate the launcher imediately once I get in the app I want to be prompted for a launcher.
I can already do it, however after I set the android launcher allways, when I get in the app again I can't make it into a launcher.
I can only make it into a launcher again if I reset app preferences on the tablet's settings...
You want to be able to choose between two or more launchers every time you "go home"?
What you have now is a situation where a launcher stays in memory and is the default after having chosen it once?
I think you will have to manually edit memory handling for that either on the app side or by modifying the android memory settings.
Android generally tries to keep the launcher in memory or cached by default I think.
Perhaps, but this is pure speculation, toy can use the developer settings for this.
There is an option in that menu for killing apps immediately after closing them, and one for max allowed background apps.
You could see if one of those (both at once is not needed) do the trick, be warned though, that'll essentially end multitasking.

Hey, thank you for your reply, what I want to be able to do is what Surelock does, which is everytime I click on my custom launcher application I get prompted to choose a default launcher, and as soon as I do it the changes take effect immediately. Meaning I enter HOME mode instantly, so when I press the home key the home is already my custom HOME app. and The back key won't work either.
This is exactly what I need to do...
What happens now is that on the first time I run the application I get the same result as in the surelock application which is what I want. And if I restart the tablet I restar on my own launcher which is also perfect, however...
if I exit my own launcher (which I've made possible by pressing a button) when I choose to use android launcher as allways, I imediately move to the android launcher which is also what I want.
The problem is when I go to the application to repeat the same process, it will still ask me which launcher I want to choose but when I choose mine, the changes don't take effect.
The changes will only take effect if I reset app preferences in the tablet's settings...
And I want to be able to repeat the process as many times as I want without having to reset the app preferences...
Right, now I get it.
You will have to write two (near identical) scripts that 1: clears the launcher default or directly changes it to the other (better) 2: starts the other launcher.
I don't know how to do that, but Claystone Launcher apparently has the function so it's perfectly doable.
