So I was forced to execute my Inspire today. It was rooted, I've tried different roms/radios, flashed rooted stock rom/stock rom. It was never reliable: always dropping service, not receiving/making calls at random times, mms unreliable. I took it back to best buy to try to get it exchanged for a new one. Of course the phone was working flawlessly when I got to the store. The good news is that I had purchased the best buy protection plan for it at $10/month. I had enough of the phone not working reliably for its intended purpose and had to smash it in order to get a new unit. I went back to best buy and turned in the broken phone, and after more than a few suspicious looks from workers-got my phone sent in for repair. Of course it's not going to be repairable (I hit it with my baton , which crushed the screen and phone in the middle), so now I wait a few weeks for my new unit.
My question is, should I cancel my ATT contract and go with a different provider. I loved the actual phone, I just think the ATT "4G" service is horribly unreliable in my area. Or, are there any good Android 3G phones for ATT?
BTW, I am coming from an iPhone 4 before i got the HTC Inspire. iPhone worked awesome, I'm just tired of Apple products.
You can exchange/return your phone within 30 days so why the hell did you "smash" it?
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
If you were within the 30 days you had every right to just return it just because you wanted to.
I hope you get it all worked out. GL

I LOL'd when I read that
In my opinion, you have the best android phone AT&T has to offer...and on this thread? I think a lot of people will think the same thing. A lot of us inspire owners are previous captivate owners! That phone REQUIRED tweaking to get it to work smoothly (and for me, to get gps to work)
You could get the atrix, but there's not much tweaking/modding/flashing you can do with it due to a signed bootloader.
yeah, smashing it was a stupid thing to do.
cancelling your at&t contract will cost you a lot of money.
LOL, its crazy that someone has to go to those lenths to return a phone, but its true especially at stores like bestbuy its like ok so u want me to go in parking lot and run over it with my car a few times? then you will exchange it? and if u didnt have a problem with it why would u want a new one? Funny the smashing with baton part though.
^ he said, he was having problems.
i agree with others, you had 30 days to return it, i don't understand why you didn't just do that, and get another phone.

Right on... I also think $10 a month is crazy expensive.
For me, the Inspire has been a dream. Super stable... super fast... and I really haven't felt the need to root it.. yet.

yea, $10 a month is nuts, i only paid $50 for the entire phone!
I don't think any of your understood, lol. Best Buy refused to take it back because it was working fine in front of them. And I did literally say to the kid working there, "So if I take it out in the parking lot and run it over with my truck, you guys will take it back?" He replied, "Do what you gotta do, if you come in tomorrow with a broken phone I'll act like I didn't see you come in today."
BTW I paid full price for the phone ($450ish).
You can return it for ANY reason within 30 days. Doesn't have to be broken.

I dont think bestbuy will do a swap without something wrong with it that they can see that isnt walmart. Not all stores are easy to work with. sure he could have returned it but that is a restocking fee

That's what I was thinking. I didn't want to push the issue and get the manager involved only to deny me getting a new phone. Then, I show up a few days later with a broken phone anyway. I will most likely be buying my next phone at Costco.

Restocking fees no longer apply at best buy, and their return policy does not say something has to be wrong.

What would ruin your warranty? A non-visible "unknown sources" that ATT actually allows now anyway?
Or s-Off @ hboot?
Or superuser?
Or a non-stock ROM?

Yeah I thought about that...if I happened to get a sales rep that yells out, "You're rooted!"...but I needed that SIM card and really didn't want the hassle of popping the Hack Kit and going back to stock just for a SIM card...it was kind of fun .

he is advertising the ICS on his phone.
thus making ICS rom part of the selling point.
meaning he is asking money for the rom and the device. not just the device.

That makes no sense. What's wrong with selling the phone and advertising the ROM it's running? It's like being mad at someone for selling the car and advertising the stereo system in it. People need to get over how people sell their things or those that charge to root phones.

He clearly says it's an AOSP based rom and not the official ICS for NS.
He does set a stupidly high price for it, but if that's what he want to, he should be able to do that without people complaining about it.
In fact, I would be rather pissed if I bought the phone and found out custom roms were installed, and the one who sold it didn't say anything about it.
your guys are missing the point.
What if a guy asked money for the APP/Rom you made and put your hard work in?
get it now?
its actually one of the rule's here on XDA that you should not ask money for somebody's work thats not yours.
and he clearly states that your also patying for the ICS..
We get it but, unless the guy starts selling hundreds with xda ROMS as a selling point, it's not a big deal!
There's a few Nexus S on Craigslist that have ICS roms. At least in my area.

He is selling a NS unlocked, rooted, with ICS ROM. The value he is adding is the convenience of not having to unlock and install the ICS rom yourself. Maybe not worth much to you but maybe not going through that trouble is worth the price for some one else.

If they want promote the sale on the fact they have ICS installed on it, then good for them, it's about the only way they can justify a high price!

Hey One S community. I hope this will be my new home. I currently have a Samsung galaxy vibrant so the One S would be a huge update (original snapdragon so the s4). Anyways, I bought a like new condition HTC one S which will not boot. Apparently the guy was attempting to unlock the boot loader and ended up wiping the phone. The phone will power up to the HTC screen so fast boot should be accessible. I'm hoping to reflash it with the T-Mobile RUU. I played 170$ for it. What are my odds of this phone being bricked forever?

Waiting to see if I can. Is there any known situations where you wouldn't be able to? (assuming hardware is perfect). The guy claims that he can get into the bootloader and I can't see any situations where I couldn't fix it. If there is something he didn't tell me I should be fine as eBay buyer protection says that all his comments on the sale must be "in good faith" and not sneaky.

Sure wish I had seen your ad then . There seems to be a real bubble on the pricing of these phones. Check out ebay, for anything in new condition it is 300+ and anything with heavy use or moderate scratching is in the 230-250 range. I thought 170$ for a phone that seems a likely fix and is in mint condition is pretty good. I've always admired the One S as a phone anyways. Oh and the nexus 4 is out of stock all the time. here is some ebay reference, these are the last few One S's sold, I am the 165$: http://www.ebay.com/csc/Cell-Phones...Sold=1&_from=R40&LH_Complete=1&_nkw=htc+one+s

Vanilla like cm10 with no sense, or the virtuous with sense and jb?
I'd say vanilla CM10 no paranoidandroid or anything. I tend to be a purist. if theres any other aosp roms that'd be good too. also how's the state of android 4.2? can you direct me to the right threads?
There is an unofficial for 4.2 but I'd go with the mist recent nightly here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1799139
Thanks. I ended up going with cm10 because while I loved 4.2 on my vibrant, camera is important to me. great phone so far. The amoled screen is a little of putting with the colorful edges on the text.

Just wanted to update everyone here. I was very honest and upfront with the woman I started my trouble ticket with and told her right from the start that I had rooted my phone and caused my own problems. Well I got an email today from Samsung stating that my phone had been re-flashed and was being shipped back to me today by UPS. All I paid for this service was $2.46 for a box and shipping materials at my local UPS outlet. There was no charge for re-flash or shipping! I will always buy Samsung!!!!! :good:
Now to decide what to do since I now have two working Samsung phones on Straight Talk. LOL! Should I reactivate the infuse with it's currently inactive Straight Talk sim card or just use it for my Google Voice phone number and keep my new phone for network calls...
thats great, really surprised samsung didnt make you pay...
I'm surprised also... quite a deal.
How long from when you sent it out until when you got it back? (just curious).

I haven't actually gotten it back yet. I shipped it out on Monday, They got it on Wednesday and Thursday I got the email saying it was shipped back in my direction. I expect it by Saturday at this rate! Also, I called Straight Talk and apparently I can reactivate my Straight Talk SIM card in it with no extra charge since activated a replacement phone before sending it off and I pay for the unlimited plan. All I'll need is a new number for it since the replacement phone has my existing number and I'll have two working Samsung phones for the price of one phone plan. (I still think the Straight Talk representative was full of caca in that regards. LOL! I'll believe it when I see it!) :silly: Life can NOT be that good or I've just entered the Twilight Zone!
Congratulations man.
Btw it's almost impossible to hard brick lol.
I saw your picture of it and it wasn't hard bricked. Either way it's good their fixing it. Consider yourself very lucky. They usually won't fix that.

Congratulations man.
Btw it's almost impossible to hard brick lol.
I saw your picture of it and it wasn't hard bricked. Either way it's good their fixing it. Consider yourself very lucky. They usually won't fix that.
You take responsibility when you flash.

Yeah well I wasn't able to figure it out and I felt safer sending it to someone who knew what they were doing. My grasp of tech these days is somewhat impaired by meds that keep me from thinking as clearly as I used to. :silly:

Well in that case I would suggest you stick with the stock ROM from now on. If you are not willing to try to bring it back from an Oh Sh1t! you don't need to be playing with custom ROM's or other mods.

Never said I wasn't willing to try! I said I didn't feel up to the challenge. There's a big difference there. I don't however have any plans to re-root it for now. Maybe if, or when my brain isn't so scrambled by my current medical situation..... Sometimes, the smartest thing a person can do is recognize their own limitations.

Very true words
Thanks to op. As a result of this thread, we all learned another option for recovering from inevitable (if you flash) soft brick. It's probably not the first option for most, but it certainly may be helpful to know there's a backup plan if you just can't get your computer to cooperate with heimdal/odin

Glad I could help! :silly: And really upfront honesty when talking to the person who's creating your trouble ticket with humility and self effacing deprecation is recommended! I was a twat for breaking my warranty and I admitted it and they fixed it. Even if I had had to pay a little for the repairs, it would have been worth it! I have my better camera (With an actual Flash) and GPS device back now! FYI - In case anyone is wondering about the Straight Talk Samsung Galaxy Centura camera, it is only 3 Mega Pixels and has no flash!

I would like to apologize for that response. There are many more people on here more deserving of that type pop off if one must have them.
If you were having a good day I would highly recommend Zen's [GBRUCLB3] []>>>>> r.e.v.e.n.a.n.t <<<<< First Edition - 2013.04.30OM][
The only thing required to flash it would be to flash one of Zen's rooted kernel with cwm red recovery using either Odin or One of Qkster's Heimdall one clicks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23118162&postcount=3
