So whats up with car mount/holders?

I'am scanning ebay time to time, this one looks pretty nice to me:

Has anybody tried this or any other solutions?

This is just a car mount.. the Google Car Dock will charge it and put it in some kind of NAV mode I am guessing..
But I am waiting too, much more excited about the car mount over the desktop one they sell.

I have this one. You will need to modify (Heat and bend, file down slightly with dremmel) to make it work with a hardcase on the phone. I got it to work nicely.

I just bought a random car holder from a store with variable width and it works like a charm, cost like $10.
Might not have a built in charger, but I already have a usb charger for my car so it doesn't really matter.

bought this to use with my G1 back when the Sprint Hero Nav app was dumped.. used it many times and works excellent with the Nexus One as well ... it rotates landscape and it unclips to use in the dash vent .. i originally wanted it because it doesnt interfere with the touchscreen and its low profile wont let it vibrate too much..and it has a good grasp on the phone without damage (i run a track setup on my suspension with competition spring rates and coilovers.. along with solid engine mounts)

I've been looking for a low profile secure vent mount for my benz. Might check this one out for $15!
Update: Just picked one up at PepBoys for $11.99!

I went to pep boys and grabbed one of these maybe my standards are to high but this thing is probably the biggest piece o crap I have eve put my hands on I can think of about 10 different ways to make this thing better returned and still looking for a viable solution..

I had a lot of trouble getting it to 'hold' securely at the correct angle height on the vent.

Motorcycle Mount

Ok, I know it sounds crazy but has anyone out there found a good way to mount one of these to a motorcycle?
I have a couple bikes but my new long distance bike is a Honda ST1300 and I am to a point where I am either going to install another Garmin mount for my Street Pilot 2730 on the ST1300 or come up with some way to mount my Nexus One. Basically all I am looking for is the ability to listen to music and hear the navigation. I have the music and nav working now because I have a J&M 2003 CB/Intercom/Aux input on the bike. I can plug my phone in and get sound. So far I have been putting my phone in my jacket pocket with a headphone extension jack run to it. I would rather mount it so it would be easier to charge off a powerlet jack on the bike. I thought about buying one of the Google Car Docks as I like how it seems to securely hold the phone but I fear there is too much built into the base for that to work for me. I was going to pull the base off and try and modify it to use a RAM mount.
My other option that I was considering was a RAM Aqua Box for PDAs. Anyone out there ever try them? I was thinking I might be able to modify one to have a headphone jack and power pass through some how. That would give me the added benefit of being water resistant. My original plan was to just take it down when it is raining.
Anyone out there try any of this?

I have been trying to find something similar. I have the car dock and think it should be sturdy enough to use on a bike if you have a large enough flat area to mount it to. The way the suction cup locks in seems very secure. I haven't tried it yet but intend to soon. A ram mount solution would be much better, however. Has anyone tried the Iphone Ram mount with the nexus one? I've heard that the nexus one fits many of those Iphone cradles so this could be a possible solution.

I can't mount the suction cut to the wind screen as it has an electric windscreen that moves up and down. It would be fine if I had the screen up all the way but in the lower positions it wouldn't work out. About the only other place I could stick it would be on the tank and I don't like that location that well. So I guess I will have to keep my eyes out for a RAM solution. While the iphone and the Nexus are close in size I don't know how well it would work. The Car dock would be the best option. I guess I should just buy one and see if I can modify it to suit my needs. the generic holders are fine in a car but on a motorcycle where they are subject to a lot more forces (wind) and if they fall they are toast means I really need a secure mount.

Well, as of a few minutes ago, that google search gave two results. Of the two, the one intended as a bicycle mount looked like it'd hold the N1 more securely... but both of 'em leave the phone fairly exposed.
For both of the mounts shown, I'd have to say no. Bumps hit harder on a bike - instead of one wheel dipping down into a pothole out of three, you have one out of two. At speed, that's a serious jostle, and neither mount would give me confidence in the phone staying in place.
A ride started with the sun out, can turn rainy at the drop of a dime, and if you're out on the highway, it can take a minute to get off to the side to cover your phone - plenty of time for it to get soaked.
My helmets retain pristine appearance for roughly 20 minutes of ownership - there's a lot of stuff flying through the air on the highway which you'd barely notice (if at all) when riding a car; that tiny rock kicked 20' into the air by the truck 12 car lengths in front of you, could easily smack the back of the phone.
All in all, my recommendation is either a RAM case + mount (expensive! I've priced their stuff), or a small pelican case w/ DIY mounting (cheap, ugly, works - did this for a previous phone and GPS), or do more or less what you've been doing - jacket pocket, screen off. I'd switch over from Bluetooth to a wired connection to helmet speakers, as that'll save your battery - when running mine this way, I can get 5-6 hours of GPS nav from the N1 while riding. Bluetooth, I'd suspect cuts that down by a lot...
If you're doing longer rides (fun! But you shouldn't need GPS for that... I just tape some basic route instructions to my tank, and use the speakers for music), carry a charged-up second battery, and swap when you gas up. When you stop for the night, charge both.
-- Okay, I should've read your OP better - you're not using BT, you're using the headphone jack. With music + nav + screen off, should still be able to do a long ride without issues, I'd think. Handlebar mounts - the closest I've come to inserting my bike into someone's car was when I was looking down at the GPS. Better to go audio only.
(Also: I don't care how rain-proof a jacket claims to be, don't trust 'em - trashed an iphone that way. Now I use a 'seal pouch', safe to submerge (assuming I'm not running a headphone out of it - but with the headphone routed through it, it's still rain-safe, at least), and keep that in my pocket for use when the skies gray up.

Thanks, the one that resembles the Google mount where it wraps around the phone more might do the trick. While the bar mount included does me no good it looks like it has a ball on the end that may work with a RAM mount. If it doesn't I am only out $20. I think I will order one up.

Keep in mind there are many types of motorcycles out there. What you said is true on some. If I were riding a cruiser (Harley or one of the many clones) it would say I 100% agree. I don't think I would attempt this on that type of a bike. However the bike I am riding is a Honda ST1300. These bikes are very smooth. I have ridden Harleys and some of the many clones and the V4 with the counter balancers makes an engine buttery smooth and very quite. It is amazing how many of us complain about things you never hear people talk about on a motorcycle. Things like how loud the tires are. Yes, I don't like the tires I am running now because they are too loud.

The cowling and electrically adjustable windscreen on it offers lots of protection when needed. I just got back from a trip from Arizona to Minnesota and hit lots of rain from Kansas through to Iowa. I had my phone in my jacket pocket and it was fine. Now keep in mind that my suit is water resistant alone and I had another rain suit on top of it. This was easy to do though because the temps were pretty low. On my ST1100 I have mounted my Garmin 2730 behind the cowling in a similar location to where I would mount the phone and it has very rarely seen any moisture while on the move. I know many other riders on this same bike that use Garmin Nuvis that are not waterproof like my Garmin 2730 and they just put a zip lock bag over it if there is light rain. If it is heavy it goes in one of the many storage bins. I would do the same with the phone. Honestly the most I will use it in this mount is on short rides in good weather. If I am doing a long touring ride it will go in a zip lock in the clear map pouch of my tank bag. I just don't ride around with a tank bag other than when touring.
As for rocks and debris. I am not too worried about them. Again the bike is offers good protection. Sure my helmet takes a beating if I run the windscreen in the low position but with it bumped up again it is pretty much like being on a Goldwing. Potholes are the reason I wanted a mount that wrapped around the phone like what the Google Car Dock does rather than something generic or these simple ones that the phone slides into.
Also in case anyone else is interested in doing something like this in the future. The problem with using the phone like this is that you can't interface with the screen when you have gloves on. I found out that you can stitch some silver thread into the glove so that it conducts through to your skin and you will then be able to interface with the screen. I have also tested and discovered that this works through zip lock style bags as well as the zip lock/clear map case combo on the tank bag. While it should be mentioned it isn't a good idea to be setting up a new route while on the move it is handy to be able to say, route around a detour should you be stopped in traffic or start up the music player should it stop for some reason.

All well and good, but please don't accuse me of riding a cruiser! I ride a naked/standard/streetfighter, depending on who you ask (FWIW: 02 Triumph TB, with ZRX1100 front & rear, rearsets).

i would worry about vibration and moisture without a water resistant box. i've traveled with only a tomtom suction cupped to the tank, and it was secure. would i put my nexus there, certainly not. i also wouldn't put my nexus in the open air. or ANY PHONE that i might rely on in an accident....
when i ride here is what i do:
UNLOCK THE PHONE
PUT "ICE" contract on the main screen, then "WIFE", "PARENTS" with direct dial on the MIDDLE screen
... then just ride sanely as ever, and hope no one has to use my shortcuts. remember, they'll have a much harder time alerting your loved ones if the phone is locked !
also, print an address label, bright orange, with "ICE PHONE IN XYZ COMPARTMENT!!!" on whatever part of your bars / screen/ lid is visible. they're cheap, easy to print/change, and can save a life if your buddy/wife/whatever has fallen and you are unconsciouse.

I've lost faith in ICE contacts ever since I asked a few EMT's whether they check the phone for tagged entries of that nature, and they'd never even heard of the convention. So instead, I just keep a card with contact info in my front breast pocket, in case the wallet gets torn away.
BMW: sure, they'll be helpful, but a large part of the ego there seems to be how much your farkles cost you - velvet-lined, custom machined from aluminum recovered from the space shuttle crash, hand-delivered by the German Prime Minister. I'd check sv650 (or similar, tiger, whatever) forums, since they seem to care more about making something which works, but cheaply.
I may be a bit biased against BMW's. And Harleys.
The small-sized Pelican case (iphone sized) will hold the nexus quite nicely, and the overpressure valve can be made to accomodate cabling in & out of the case in a water-tight fashion. 's what I used for a few years, until I decided I ended up spending too much time looking at lcd's instead of the road.

I didn't mean that you were riding a cruiser, just that I would see it being an issue on that type of bike. Where I really have never been hit by anything other than that hands and helmet. Most people have no idea what a ST is because not many are imported so I wasn't sure if you knew what it looked like.

Yeah, while not as easy to put up on one wheel as a sport bike (it is 723lbs wet), it will lift in 1st and 2nd without much effort.
That is a good point about needing a phone after an accident. Although after an accident hard enough where I might damage it in a mount, I probably wouldn't be calling anyone. I know a few people that wear custom dog tags when riding with contact info.
I guess the other point of view is that if something were to happen to my phone, I do have insurance on it. I think they replacement deductible was $150 or so. That is less than a lot of GPS devices. Well at least the ones that are worth a darn.
I really wanted to go with the aqua box but I don't know if I can get power and audio jacks in there.

What are you using the rivet gun for? It looks like you posted photos to a bar mount as well. A bar mount doesn't do me any good on the ST1300. It doesn't use traditional round bars like your bike.

Rivet gun is for the Brodit Holder I ordered -
I was thinking just to rivet this holder on the left side of the dash.
Since seeing the bike mount, I will wait and see if that can do the job for me before I go drilling holes in things!

I am leaning more towards a holder that holds the top of the phone as well. The other option that I am thinking about is the pelican case. I will drill a hole in it to feed a USB cable with a right angle micro USB plug through and seal it up. That way I can power. Then I might add Bluetooth to the intercom system so I don't have to mess with the audio jack.

I don't really want a case round it myself, but definitely I'm wondering about some kind of clip to go on the top to hold it in.
Definitely I want an A2DP BT headset, so I can patch all sound, music, podcasts and calls through the helmet wireless-ly. I do this in my car now and it's awesome!

I have been looking into buying another kit J&M Kit for my bike that would let me do this. For all the parts that I want it is going to add another $500 in parts. That would give me A2DP BT connection to the phone for all sound, music and phone calls. It would also add GMRS/FRS radio for two way communication with other bikes that I ride with in addition to the CB 2 way radio that I have right now. At that point I might as well hook up my Garmin GPS as well because it will give me another input that I won't be using. I already have over $1000 sunk into the communications on my bike to get me intercom, CB and all the other stuff needed to make it work such as noise filters and antenna. I would probably want to add another antenna for the GMRS/FRS radio then to boost my range as not everyone has the ability to talk on both bands. That is kind of the problem I have now. Half of use are on CB and half on GMRS/FRS. With the setup I have now I can pull my aux input and loose music and connect into a GMRS/FRS radio and listen. I just can't talk as I don't have all then necessary parts yet.
Eventually all this stuff gets to the point where it is too easy to get a hold of me. Right now I like it that I can't be reached by cell when I am out riding. It lets me get away from work and all the interruptions in life. Besides talking on the phone and juggling all those radios and GPS is a distraction that can be dangerous on a bike.

You could check out http://www.bikertech.de/, it doesnt have a n1 mount, but you can use some parts or ideas.

just got mine in today... it's legit badass. very sturdy and it's a suction cup that actually holds suction. the actually phone holder offers 360 degrees rotation and tilt. i give it two thumbs up!

I just got one from http://www.thecellguru.com/Products/26866 for a little under $33 delivered. I have used Cellularaccessory (the OP's source) in the past and found them very helpful as well.
The mount is "OK" in my book. While nicely made and holds the phone well, it isn't anywhere near as adjustable as I would like in terms of angles. There is only a small amount of adjustability in the ball joint that connects the cradle to the arm, perhaps +/- 20 degrees.
Another drawback is it launches the &*^%ing car-mode app/screen and ties it to the home button, which makes for a less-than-useful phone (until I can figure out how to customize that app away).
On the plus side, the lever for the suction cup is very easy to use (much better than, for example, the twist-to-lock used by TomTom).
I also like that there isn't stress on the phone's micro-USB connector. That connector has been a failure point on other phones.
It includes a standard Samsung CLA, which may or may not be able to provide the 1.1A that the T959V can take to charge. I use a USB cable and the Elago 1A (dual) CLA-to-USB which lets me charge the phone, as well as a headset/speakerphone from a single socket. Apparently Amazon has seen enough sales of the Elago line (love their Nano II microSDHC reader) that they have picked them up themselves. JoWow has been good in the past for many orders and Elago items (they were previously the only Amazon-related source).
I'll probably end up ditching the suction-cup arm and figuring out how to better mount the cradle. From what I have read, it isn't the industry-standard pattern, so it will have to be something custom.

I actually made my own mount using a cheap piece of crap mount off Amazon and my old Magellan GPS mount. I took the front part that actually holds the phone, and used a dremel tool to cut new holes in the back so that it would slide on to the arm assembly of the GPS mount. Fits perfect and looks awesome. Best of all, it doesn't fall off my windshield anymore!

Anyone have an issue using a bluetooth headset while docked? It seems to disable unless I undock, make call, and redock.

Synergy wireless charger

Hey everyone, I stumbled upon this Kickstarter project and thought I would share with everyone the link. This idea looks perfect !
I rly have trouble to buy car dock for my S4, before samsung, i was using htc sensation, with original car dock and its was pretty cool, just plug phone in dock and its going to automobile mode and charges? now i dont know what to do with S4 i havent seen any car dock like i have with HTC...

I like my toys, but $125 for a charging stand seems a bit high. In addition, the micro-suction technology probably wont work with many of the cases like Otterbox or UAG since a very smooth surface is needed to adhere to the back of the phone.
Based on the Kickstarter goal to raise $150K and they are only at $27K with 16 days to go, it looks like others may be doubting this idea too.

Why do you assume it use 'micro-suction'? it does not. it is magnetic.
And it is a High End device, so $95 for the stand + the base for the car including the wire tap to integrate directly in the car is not outrageously expensive.

I don't think a magnet would be strong enough to hold the phone to the base. Someone said it was magnet + micro-suction. I thought $95 was only the kickstarter promotional price with full retail at $125.
At this point let's wait to hear first hand accounts from users. If it gets funded, has rave reviews and can hold the phone with an Otterbox or UAG case then I will get one.

9 days left with $120K still needed. That's over 1000 more backers needed!

Folio, keyboard folio or keyboard?

Hi, so decided to stump up for the Pixel C using the developer discount. Overall am happy with the tablet. Now time to decide what sort of casing I need for it. I'm based in HK and there is a serious lackage of accessories (apart from the keyboard which is roughly the same price as in the USA). I've heard some rumours that the keyboard starches the tablet up, is that true? If so, would a tempered glass screen help?
Anyway, so my normal usage for the tablet will be more media consumption (video watching), bit of reading etc. I will probably use it for working when travelling (i.e. emails, maybe document review via Citrix Receiver). But typing isn't the main concern.
I do like having a folio cover, because you can prop it up for watching videos. But having a keyboard would also be nice for those times I need to type with it. So maybe the folio keyboard (which isn't available in HK, but I'll be in the USA in a few weeks). But then is US$150 justified for buying something I would use maybe 20% of the time?
I appreciate you can use the keyboard as a stand, but I guess its not as good as a folio (and folio is certainly cheaper). Argh, decisions!

I´m using this one for my devices. On amazon or other stores the prices are reduced. You can pair 2 devices at twice and the keyboard is really space saving.

Yep, to me both keyboard solutions from Google are too expensive. Maybe one day I'll get one (and they discount it as well).
I ended up getting the ProCase Sleeve for the Pixel C and the MoKo Google Pixel C Case from Amazon. Both in black. I switch back and forth occasionally depending on what I'm doing. I'm really happy with both of them.

I, personally, have the folio keyboard case. Yes it was expensive, but it's so tightly integrated into the pixel C that it's hard to fault. It's made from real leather, is extremely protective, looks great and has 5 options for holding the tablet:
Positions 1 & 2 - Keyboard enabled with the tablet in one of the two magnetic typing positions
Position 3 - tablet stretched so that the chin goes over the leading edge of the keyboard. Make it great for using while laying down, having the tablet lay on your chest/stomach
Position 4 - tablet docked in magnetic tray and keyboard flipped back 180 degrees
Position 5 - you can remove the tablet from the magnetic tray super easily, close the folio, then magnetically attach the tablet to the leather back of the folio. This protects the keyboard while also giving you something less slippery to hold on to while using the tablet as, well, a tablet.
I DO wish the keyboard had function keys like the Belkin keyboard I purchased for my wife's iPad. The Belkin's keys are smaller, but still work fine. I'd happy trade key size for more usable keys.

Thanks. How do you find the weight of the tablet with the folio keyboard? How bulky does it make the whole unit? I have read reports that the keyboard does add weight to the overall unit.
Also, did you buy direct from Google? I presume its not available offline? Reason I'm asking is I will be in the States in a few weeks for a few days, so would prefer to walk in to a store and buy it.
I do wish the tablet had a built in kickstand (like the Surfaces). In general I feel that Google missed a trick in its "productivity" implementation here. Seems both Michrosoft and Apple have better solutions in terms of linking keyboards up. Anyway, rant over.

I originally bought the Pixel keyboard. Was OK but I found having to seperate the tablet and keyboard and snap them together annoying every time I came to use it.
Final straw was when I ended up scratching the back of my Pixel C where the keyboard attaches. Must have been a small amount of grit or something and the process of attaching/removing caused a scratch.
Switched to the folio keyboard and loving it.

The weight is fine. I wouldn't want to hold it up at shoulder level for hours on end, but it's far from heavy. It does add some thickness to the overall package, but in MY opinion, it makes it easier to carry around since it gives you more to hold on to. It basically turns the tablet into a very compact executive binder, just replace the normal yellow lined notepad with the pixel.
And yes, I purchased mine through Google. Order one, have it shipped to where you're staying, and if you don't like it, ship it right back before you leave.

It's not bad, I have one, but I only use it for travelling. At home I use a full Bluetooth keyboard that I got off of Amazon for $35. The Folio is extremely overpriced in my opinion.

Once used you´ll never missed it It types very well and paired your devices in a short time. The key pressures are balanced compared to a normal keyboard. For mailing / blogging / posting my favorite solution on our device Take a try even you can exchange it

Hmm yeah, I completely forgot that I can return it in 2 weeks Think I'll order it from amazon.de , it's 75 there instead of the 100 at the miscrosoft site. I thought about getting the normal keyboard but for 160 it's too expensive for now and afraid of scratches after what I read about it

So, just wanted to update this thread. I decided not to purchase the keyboard or folio, just could not justify the cost.
In the end I opted for two solutions (basically to try out): a folio case and the microsoft foldable keyboard and a folio keyboard case. All three ordered from Amazon:

So both set ups are are significantly cheaper than the USD150 cost if bought from Google.
Ironically, since purchasing from the States my laptop has needed to go in for repair, and I thought this would be a good opportunity to test out my new purchases so I could use the Pixel as a laptop replacement.
I've set the folio keyboard as the replacement and also connected a bluetooth mouse. Overall, pretty damn impressed with both the pixel and the keyboard (especially for the price). Now, lets not kid ourselves, I reckon the google folio keyboard would have been much much more better quality, but for the price that I paid for this folio, everything works generally fine.
Lets go through with the negatives first:
- Its chunky (but expect that would be the case with the official one as well)
- You can't just push the pixel into it like the official one (which benefits with the magnets)
- when it sits, because its held by velcro, the pixel pushes down a tiny bit, so it doesn't sit 100% in position, but doesn't really matter
- occasional connection issues with Bluetooth
- have to charge separately via micro usb (so no self charging)
- no trackpad (but don't think the official one has that as well)
- unlike my laptop, due to the size of the cables provided, I can't keep the unit charged all the time
but the positives
- did i mention the price?
- keys are pretty good and solid and clicky
- keyboard sits well
As for the other combo (microsoft keyboard and folio), this also works pretty well, have not tested it so much though, but can foresee using it when travelling. Its a bit of a pain to click into the folio, and a shame that it doesn't use magnetic strength of the pixel, but probably a cost issue.
Biggest issue with these third party solutions is that they don't make use of the pixel c's magnets and self charging, or at the very least usb c.
thing is, when I do get my laptop back, don't really know how much I would use the keyboard, unless when travelling.
Yes, I totally agree the official keyboard options are going to be much much better on every level, but still can't justify the price, unless I end up using a keyboard all the time.
