How to know if i got a defective item? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just got mine it looks nice but i want to know what issues can i check to know did i get a defective item or not?
Also this might be a dumb question but it's running .26 firmware, and asking me to update. Should i update and how can i root after the update (i think it will update to .30)
Thanks

After updating to .30 I managed to root it by following these instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1689193

[Q] Benefits of rooting?

Although I am not new to the rooting process; i have rooted, flashed, and unrooted by Droid X. However this asus eee pad transformer is a more valuable device that I am more hesitant to root. This past weekend I helped rooted by friend's Transformer but I am not likely to follow this rooting process. I am not sure of the benefits other than overclocking and rom flashing. I may want to root the Transformer but I am not sure if I can root it and still be able to get the ICS update pushed out by Asus. Can you guys explain if I can get this update when I have a rom flashed or I will have to set it back to stock and unroot it. Also can you guys explain more benefits of rooting this device.
Thanks,
Ryan
root only will not stop OTA update. It's when you install custom ROM and/or CWM recovery is when OTA update will fail.
Just ask your self if you're happy with it root or non root. Personal prefernces.

Is there an easy way to get rid of the CWM recovery and have it back to normal just in time for the update. I have used the rootkit v7 on my friends Transformer and I think it put CWM recovery already for you. So in other words, is their a easy way to get back to normal stock root or stock without root???
I think if your rooted and the update comes out you will only have to wait a few hours maybe a day at most for one of the devs to release a stock Ics ROM with root and superuser and all you would have to do is flash it.
At least that's how I think it goes based off past experience with Evo 4g and Evo 3D

I'm also considering rooting my transformer but have second thoughts like you about tablet costing more if something goes wrong compared to a phone.... But I think rooting now before the Ics update comes it'll be better for us due to the fact that when Ics update comes out it has the potential to block any way of rooting the transformer and like I said in last post rooting now then flashing a rooted version of Ics will benefit us by getting the update and not loosing root.
Now I just need to figure out how to root my new transformer I'm on the latest update 8.6.5.21-20111216 and find a stocked rooted ROM
Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated and THANKS will be given!!

This may sound like a stupid question but since this is an old repack version of the asus rom. Does this mean that we have to download and install every firmware that asus pushed out or will it skip a few and head to the latest firmware??? (i think i made the question harder to understand. Just tell me if you need me to clarify)

You should be able to update to the latest. If not you could always download the latest version from Asus website and try to manually update through the stock recovery.

sounds a bit risky, i just stick with the old firmware and if I have to keep on updating it, seems safer. What rom do you have on your Transformer and how are the features compared to the others???

I use Roach's Prime 2.1.1. Happy with it so I never bother trying anything else.
If and when ICS get released I'm pretty sure Roach will cook something up
if not CyanogenMod might have something also.

[Q] Canadians Able to update to .26

Any other Canadians able to update to .26, ive been trying for 3 days checking updates and havent gotten anything at all for signs of an update available.
Anyone know if our version up here would be slightly different at all?
I'm not in Canada but have had mine for a little over 2 weeks and haven't received the update yet either.

I updated mine manually. I never got any OTA. Im from Vancouver.

the manual update doesn't let you keep root or does it?

As I booted for the first time the update was there. I will root when it is more solid. Besides I don't need to be rooted yet either. I hear that there will be an update soon to fix the occasional flicker prob on the left hand of the screen.
There is a. 29 US and no OTA update to. 26 WW for me in Canada.... Still at. 17. Do they do this on purpose or is it a bug?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF300T using Tapatalk 2
No update yet, though in a way I'm glad because otherwise I probably would've updated and then been unable to root without downgrading (which sounds like quite a bit of a hassle). Since I haven't encountered any major issue with the tablet thus far I'm not too worried about not having the upgrade.
I wouldn't have rooted if it weren't for Sixaxis controller needing it, but while I was at it I took advantage of that to grab Titanium and a few more root apps and am glad I rooted in the end.
Weird.. my Canadian TF300 came with US firmware. The tab was brand new sealed in box from tigerdirect.ca.

That's because Tiger Direct ships product directly from their US warehouse. Same distribution for both countries. You are fortunate, will get .29 update with battery stats and face unlock.. No, it's called Voodoo OTA Root Keeper for a reason... It only works with OTA (over-the-air) updates.
FYI to fellow Canadians not receiving OTAs, Asus has posted the .29 update on their support site today. I just installed, working perfectly. You can find it here: http://support.asus.com/Download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=ASUS+Transformer+Pad+TF300T&p=20&s=16 Make sure you check to ensure you install the correct software version. Is confirmed in Settings/About Tablet/Build Number. Enjoy.
I am going to assume now that the bootloader unlock tool is out its easier to flash su and such onto this to root it?
am i correct on this?
I bought mine from directcanada.com and received .29 OTA no problem, straight out of the box

Update
Mine did the OTA update to .29 a couple days ago. Should be pushing to everybody now.
still nothing here, still checking every day. where did you buy yours Fraserlm
I'm not getting anything either... got mine from BB, was on US .17, returned that due to lack up updates (and not being able to unlock), got a new one from BB which is on WW .17 and still no updates/unlock
Anyone hear anything about possible fixes from asus?

Replacing Firmware

Hello all
I bought my Infinity from China yesterday.
I want to replace the firmware with US or UK or even UAE
Is there anywhere I can find these?
I saw the Asus firmware update thread but I don't think that'll help...
Thanks
Also, any chance I can use the Prime's firmware for the Infinity or not?

It seems you can flash the WW firmware, as you have tried in the other thread (I'm just putting that up here for reference for new readers).

Thought so
AFAIK you don't need root for that. Just follow the steps and remember not to miss any (the filename, the filesystem etc.).
Yup. Never needed root, nor did I venture there... yet
I'll definitely go for it soon though
Thanks again. Update flashing worked out just fine

With most of us not receiving .26 OTA, What are the chances that JB is the same way?

Those of us who had to manually update our Infinity to the latest .26 firmware because the OTA never came through.
What if ASUS releases Jelly Bean (JB) to the Transformer Infinity tablets and no one can see it because it will never show there's an update available.
Expect nothing...hope for something...
I wouldn't hold your breath, I'm certainly not holding mine.
who cares? whats so hard in manually updating? OTA updates are a feature, not the only road to go on.
If you need OTA rootkeeper then yes, it may be a factor.

You obviously don't care. ASUS posting the .26 update on their website was also a feature. Had they not done that many of us would still be on the base firmware.
So if ASUS doesn't post the update on their website this time and announce the JB release to the Infinity via OTA, but only 15% reportedly get the OTA. Would you still not care?
I don't know about you but I haven't seen any OTA update of any kind of on my Infinity since I got it, unlike when I had my Transformer Prime where there were updates coming every 2 weeks.
This should concern anyone who had to manually update their Infinity.

It's all good. This site will be abuzz like a kicked hornets best when it hits. Even IF Asus doesn't post the download, which is HIGHLY unlikely, someone on here will copy it and post for the others.. we're one big, friendly, helpful group here.
I'm fairly sure the OTA issue was fixed a while ago.

AKAIK Asus fixed the unlock/no OTA updates issue (yes these issues were related) so imo most users got the .26 OTA already. Also don't worry too much, i'm sure the JB update will be uploaded on Asus site a few days after the OTA update.

To those that were having issues receiving OTAs

Are there any users out there having issues receiving OTA updates and unlocking their TF700? There was an issue a while back where some could not receive the .26 OTA. The issue has since been resolved, but I was wondering if there is anyone who cannot receive OTAs still. Please e-mail [email protected] if you are still experiencing problems with that and unlocking your device.
If your TF700 was able to update to .26 fine, but has not received the .30 yet, please be patient as it will eventually get to you.

Ota got stuck at 99% downloaded, I 'turned it off and back on again' And it completed the download and installed correctly
Cant wait for the jellybean patch
Also, infinity should have been the first with jb but really google needs a system in place to let them update the core os and enable asus to patch it quickly with their customizations. You dont need to wait for dell to release windows patches for example

I never got the OTA for .26. I have to manually apply the downloaded file from Asus service site to get from .22 to .26. I have gotten the OTA update for .30. It installed with out any issues during the install nor have I had any issues after the install. I also went to the Asus service site and downloaded the .30 US file to keep along with the .22 and .26 update files. I find it a little unsettling that Asus has pulled the .30 update especially since I have no issues with that specific installation. Perhaps it means that Jelly Bean release is just around the corner.

Would it be possible to provide us with information about the situation of the .30 WW release? Should we get it via OTA or is it just not yet available?
Without this information we cannot tell the difference between a non working OTA (like before) or that it is just not available (yet). The publishing of the 4 .30 non WW releases (however briefly it might have been), only added to the confusion.
I am glad ASUS provides the updates, but I am a little disappointed about the information of how, when, where and what.
The US and the WW usually start rolling out at the same time, so I would be on the lookout for it now.

I have been since I saw post mention the US .30 OTA. Is there any specific information you require when emailing you?
I had to do a manual update for WW from .22 to .26, and assuming WW .30 OTA is available it is not working.

I would give it a few more days. Restart your tablet and keep pinging the server until it comes through.
There is not even one single report of getting WW version, so I doubt it is there.
If they are pushing out together, they certainly didn't this time.
WW is just not there.

But this was lucky as I should receive SD-card today from Amazon.

Yeaaaah. Installing....
