Flashing insecure I9100 ICS kernels to I727 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I was reading over the thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1619525 with a list of secure and insecure kernels for ICS. What I am a little confused on is that since I am on the skyrocket SGII I727 these kernels from I9100 don't cause problems? And also, if your running Cyanogenmod 9 I am guessing that it uses its own custom kernel since it doesn't match any of the listed kernel names at all that are listed in that thread, as it would with a stock ICS image from ATT in the Settings--> About. I know that with Cyanogenmod i am already rooted but i was doing a little research for a friend with a stock ICS skyrocket (white) and i wanted to read up on all the ways to root since when i flashed the cwm recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.3-hercules and booted into it to flash the su binary it just kept looping back to the first menu entry, not allowing me to select the install update.zip from sdcard.
Thanks for any clarification.

Don't flash an i9100 kernel or i777 kernel. Like ever.

haha, ok then, that resolves that. I thought it didn't make sense, i think i figured that i was still on the I727 section, but reading all those tutorials and stickies on the general page refer to other things un-skyrocket related im guessing, like I9100 insecure kernels for example.

No we had secure and insecure at one point since ics sources are out those died off

Currently on UCLB3 2.3.6 - How do I flash a custom ROM or kernel?

I did do a lot of searching around but it's information-overload and 99% of what I've read is for folks who are on something older than UCLB3.
So every time I find something that looks like it works and spend time reading it, I discover it doesn't work for UCLB3. VERY frustrating!
I can't figure out how to root UCLB3. Looks like nobody knows how to yet.
How do I get a custom ROM & kernel on here? I'd like to use Entropy's DD and a rooted stock ROM or something reliable.
Just got the phone today and it has 2.3.6 UCLB3 on it.
I have Windows so I can't use the Heimdall approach which seems to be for Linux or Apple.
I am famliar with ODB though.
edit: Currently trying to figure out how to get CWM installed so I can flash an unsecured kernel. Which should then get me the ROM's I want.
Which seems to be a "gotcha" since it looks like you need root to install CWM or you need to odin old kernel on top of the new one, which I'm worried may brick things.
edit #2: Found out you can use the Windows version of Heimdall. Didn't know there was one. Then I used this (second half of first post) to install red CWM. It soft bricked my phone but I don't care since I'm flashing something else.

That thread shows how to flash the leaked UCLB3.
It doesn't tell me how to flash any custom ROM's?

I'm going to be repeating a few things already offered here, so please bear with me... If your goal is a Samsung Infuse with rooted UCLB3 do the following:
1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
1a - Since you are already on UCLB3, you can probably skip the first Heimdall and go right to post #2 - this will get you "red" CWM which will allow you to load unsigned CWM zip packages. (Main reason to do the first step is to lay down a good partition table, install a clean rom, and flash the gingerbread bootloaders).
2 - Copy rooted UCLB3 rom to your internal SD Card (not the external one). Create a folder called "!ROM!" so that it shows up first in CWM and then copy roms and other install packages there.
2a - Here's Dman's rooted, deodexed, zipaligned UCLB3 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1508619
2b - If you want the stock kernel, download and copy both files linked in the first post, otherwise just the first one.
2c - If you want to keep "red" CWM (recommended) and also have video and hdmi work, copy Entropy's latest kernel to your sdcard (PM me if you want a CWM package as there is no official CWM package as of yet). Otherwise, once rooted you will need to unzip the 7z linked here, copy zimage to your sdcard, download SGS Kernel Flasher from the market and use that app to flash the kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24459243&postcount=448
3 - Next, power off phone and boot recovery using three finger technique (Vol+/Vol-/Power, release power when bottom lights go on, hold volume keys until you get red CWM).
3a - Do the following - wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, advanced-wipe dalvik cache, back to main..mounts-format system
3b - From main menu, install zip, choose zip, pick your rom and flash
3c - If you have the Entropy MHL kernel, flash this next.
3d - When done, go back and reboot
4 - Let the phone boot and then let sit for 5 min or so, then go through the initial setup process
4a - Open apps drawer, run SuperUser and update binaries - this will also confirm that you have root.
4b - Open Google market, upgrade to Play, download any utility apps you need
4c - If you are going back to the stock kernel, download SGS Kernel, copy zimage to your sdcard, and flash (note that if you do this you will lose the ability to flash other custom roms, and would have to redo qkster's CWM Heimdall)
5 - Reboot and enjoy.
If you want to explore further, here is a page with other roms listed (note that some of the info applies to froyo and some to non-ATT Infuses so read with care):

cz,
that was the whole heimdall 1click idea. post #1 - rom and restore if needed.
post #2: cwm recovery to flash custom rom.
if you want root stock, dman has made a uclb3 base, deoxdex, rooted and zipaligned. you would flash that in cwm and then flash entropy newest kernel to give you everything.
that is how you would have a rooted stock uclb3...but why would you when there is vagabond..

Skyrocket Bricked

OK you guys I have two skyrockets and one of whick was running CM9 and I loved it but I tried flashing CWM touch on Rom manager but it tried to reboot but was stuck at the first Samsung boot logo for a few secs then shuts off. Is there anyway I can I fix it or am I f*cked?

For skyrocket #1, have you tried using Odin to go back to stock?
Also, might take a look at your power button. I've seen several posts about what appears to be a bootloop, but its just that the power button got stuck.
As for the question on skyrocket #2, you can flash roms and root to your heart's content and it won't mess with your radio.

Others have covered #1 pretty well, but I will say that using ROM Manager to do anything other than fix permissions is a risky proposition. I prefer to use ODIN to get CWM in place/updated.
As for the second phone, a new ROM won't change your radio, but make sure you update to 4.0.4 stock via Kies first to get an ICS radio before jumping to CM9.

i agree with the rom manager, never use it for anything other than fixing perms, but twrp does that pretty well so we actually dont need rom manager
you can get the ics radio by flashing back to stock, the prob is it might not stick the first time if coming from another radio as no recovery wipes the radio when wiping the system, but you can flash the radio(twice) seperatly in any rom to check which radio works best for the user, ics radios for ics roms, dont think you can flash gb radios on ics or vice versa

Simple Instructions Needed Please

Ultimately what I am trying to accomplish is to install SlimBean ICS on my friends Froyo Galaxy. (I am a Motorola Guy)
From my understanding you need to go to Ginger first. Easy enough, use Kies.
Next I need to install CM, this is where I am getting lost. Do I need to install 7 (GB) before I can install 9 (ICS)?
How do I install CM on this device? Totally lost because there are so many extra steps.
Lastly there is install SlimBean once CM is installed which is easy enough via CWM.
First question is, are you using a Galaxy or Galaxy S 4G? They're different.
Second, skip KIES, use a one-click. Flash once, reboot, Linda, Flash with bootloaders.
Then you can move on to the fun of ICS.
Please remove the battery from the phone and verify that the model for the phone is either
SGH-T959V
or
SGH-T959W
Those are the only phones the files on this forum are meant for! Reply with the model here so we can direct you to the right forum if your friend's phone is different than the Galaxy S 4G

Flashoholics!!

Just trying to be helpful here, here is a faster way to get from stock one-click to JB goodness.....
After you flash to stock with antonx kernel reboot into recovery and flash bhundvens blastoff kernel, reboot recovery, now you should be in blue 5.0.2.8....flash the newest cm9, it will reboot automatically into recovery for you to flash a second time, but don't, instead flash a JB Rom, (I flashed chaos from dao) once it rebooted into recovery...jellybean recovery, I flashed the Rom plus gapps. Rom booted just fine.
So.....save a little time from completely flashing the whole rom, waiting for it to boot and rebooting into recovery just to do it again till you get where you want.....cheers
hopefully it saves you some time
************************just like everyone else says "I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE"*****************
just one-click back and start over hee hee!!!!
If you're saying flashing a kernel with CWM 5.x and then flashing a JB ROM is faster, we all know that already.
You are not flashing the kernel first technically. What you are doing is converting the file system.
However I thought all the JB roms had the mtd conversion script included. If they dont I would ask the person that ported them to update it with that script. There should never be a reason to flash to ics then jb.

Looking for suggestions for good kernels and modems for Cyanogen mod 10.1

I just installed Cyanogen mod 10.1.2 on my Verizon S3 and I'm wondering if there are any good kernels people are using with this?
Also, should any modem be compatible? Or do to modems have to be specific to the ROM also? Should this modem (firmware?) work with CM 10.1.2 on my S3?
Thanks!
The top two used kernels being used with CM10.2 at the moment is Lean and BMS. Also any modem will work as long as its Made for the VZW SCH-I535.

I was looking at the modems and it seems like none of those basebands match mine. Mine is I535VRLF2, can I flash any of these modems?
Also, I was only able to find LeanKernel for CM on 4.3, I am running CM 10.1, which is 4.2.2.
Edit: Just realized that flashing this would in fact change the baseband. So I should be ok flashing that one.
Yes if you r on VZW just grab one of those modems. I'll send you a link for 4.2.2 LK. If you get screen tearing the is an option in developer option to toggle to fix it. Search the thread for details. Its like disable hardware overlays or something
