Question,
I am running 1.5 and want to flash to 1.6, everything seems to be working decent in 1.5, however If I want the cleanest flash possible for 1.6 and don't use ODIN, how would I go about it.

I would wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvic Cache (in advanced settings). I don't know if this is the CLEANEST way, but its what i would do
1.5 what?? Synergy? If so, you should befine with a cache wipe, then flash 1.6 in cwm recovery...odin is not used for this.

wiping data takes care of the caches aswell...read the log in cwm.

heey i have serendipity 6.4 and i want to flash andromeda3...Do i need to flash back to stock or can i flash through CWM without having too?
1st off :wrong place to post this.
No u don't need to go back to stock.
a- under CWM do a factory reset, wipe data, caches (partition cache and dalvik)
b- if u have lagfix then disable it
After this ur good to go flashing Andromeda from CWM

Neither of these is necessary. Andromeda does a complete wipe and is compatible with lagfix kernels.

If I want to update my MIUI rom, can I do it by only removing cache only or do I have to do the factory reset?
Only cache and dalvik cache (advanced-->clear dalvik cache) is needed. If you're running 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 it's a good idea to do a full wipe before upgrading to 2.3.5.
Remember next time that you only need to wipe the caches and simply flash the zip. Easy peasy!
- If you want to flash a new ROM, then you'll need to do a full wipe.
- If you only want to upgrade from 1.x to 2.x you only need to clear cache and dalvik.
- If you want to upgrade, but the upgrade includes jumping to a new version of Android (2.3.3->2.3.4->-2.3.5 etc.) then it's a good idea to do a full wipe. It's not needed, but again, it's a good idea.

i personaly never do a factory reset or full wipe unless its recommended by the DEV. this way all my settings and aps are saved and still in their respective spots when switching over. most of my experiences are trial and error based.
just remember always NAND backup before you do anything. its just a android life saver. this way if something doesnt workout you just go back and start over

Thats what I thought. Thanks for the answer.
solved i was flashing a rom, but i guess i didn't do a wipe or something, so now my sprint evo3d won't boot. when i power up, it shows the htc logo and thats all.
i can get into recovery(TWRP) and fastboot just fine, so what do i need to flash/wipe to fix this?
rooted htc method so unlocked with s-on hboot1.50
solution if anyone has the same problem:
reflashed my previous rom then was able to boot. now i am restoring and backing up like i should have
Did you make a nandroid backup?

so many people and no help... LOL! it seems that you are soft bricked! no worries, flash the same ROM you had before the one you were trying to flash and you should then be fine! make nandroid and then flash the new ROM that you wanted happy flashing
ha i just had that thought of flashing my old rom myself. thanks for the second on that idea. ill do that if the file ever feels like copying....

oh, and i forgot: Its rare to hard brick phones by just flashing ROMs, the worse thing to get is a bootloop like you got, usually. the way to get hard bricked is to flash a bad SPL, so interupt an SPL installation or flash a ROM with SPl and install it wrong or Radio, or in some phones, deleting or flashing the recovery wrong and then soft bricking, boot loop for sure then

if your old rom doesnt copy, no problem just install a rom that works with your SPL and kernel and radio. damn HTC, why do they make it so hard? when i wanna flash my samsung, all i need to do is go to boot loader, fire up this program called odin, and odin does everything for me! get a samsung phone next time its better
yep that fixed it. so now my question is what was the problem? and more importantly how can i avoid this problem (yes i need to backup, i mean the brick)

If you're going to a new kernel, wipe the cache and dalvik cache. If you're going to a new version of the same ROM you're on, same thing unless stated otherwise. If you're going to a totally new ROM, wipe everything (obviously, minus your card) unless stated otherwise. If you're reflashing the same ROM you were on, you don't have to wipe unless you end up with a different kernel; then wipe cache and davlik cache.

well im not 100% sure about your phone, but in the G1 forum the devs suggest a complete /system wipe... also factory reset before and after flashing is a very good idea
ok thanks all i'll do all that from now on.

If you're switching ROMs and you wanna be able to get everything back exactly like it was, use Nandroid to backup/restore. It takes a full backup of everything in your phone's memory: The ROM, the apps and their data, etc.
If you want to be able to backup and restore apps and data between different ROMs, use Titanium Backup. But be careful because in some cases restoring app data on 2 ROMs with different bases can cause the ROM to act funky.
Hey, I'm currently on MIUI ics. I know I have to wipe/factory reset everything. But is it safe to flash on the current CWM? Or do I need to update it or something? Do I just flash the new JB rom like I would switching from MIUI to a stock ics rom? I'm a noob, sorry if this doesn't make sense.
What version of CWM are you running?
You should be fine, but it never hurts to check. You flash a JB rom just like any other. Wipe wipe wipe and flash.
The whole wipe wipe wipe is completely unnecessary. One wipe is sufficient and any additional won't do anything.
It's like saying that unless you wipe exactly 3 times the Android Gods are going to demand a human sacrifice for your phone to boot.
lol i think dvorak meant wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, wipe data (wipe wipe wipe) but that's my take..
anyway, if you can flash MIUI ICS with whatever CWM version you currently have, you should be able to flash other JB ROM. Nandroid as always.. Goodluck!

This is what I did :
1. Boot into recovery and perform a nandroid backup of my MIUI installation.
2. Wipe.
3. Flash XenonHD 9 JB ROM + marmite 4.2 kernel.
My phone is running really smooth now. Good luck.

Yep, that's it. Of course wiping everything 3 times would be unnecessary.

if you get a cluster f*#@ of problems then clean install. It isn't that hard. Use Titanium Backup and good to go.
In Recovery:
1. wipe data/factory reset (this formats /data, /cache and .android_secure on sd)
2. format /system, /boot
this leaves you with only bootloader, recovery and radio...dalvik-cache resides on /data, so it's gone already.
3. flash rom
4. gapps & custom-kernel (if needed). No need to let the phone boot & settle before flashing them (most custom-kernels have a script that automatically wipes /cache & dalvik during kernel-install)
5. reboot
6. Run TB -- restore missing apps with data --1st option under restore
just updating rom:
1. flash rom-zip
2. wipe /cache and dalvik-cache
3. reboot
Do this before reporting any issues on the thread since the problems are often related to this and not the ROM or kernel.

Well, yesterday's CM 10.1 nightly was really crashing system UI. I had to roll back to the M2. But if the same stuff happens with CM 10, thats very strange.
Are you doing a clean install? Factory Reset + clean caches? Sometimes the system keeps data from other Roms and conflict ensues.
Hope it helps.

i never clean caches when i fast roms but i guess the factory reset could have erased it is there any way to get back to stock?
try this....
Sometimes roms like cm10.1 require you to do a clean wipe befor flashing. Make a nandroid backup before this though. You would firstly need to wip cache partion, wipe dalvik cache then do a factory reset. After flash the rom. Then wipe dalvik cache again. Did that help?
