SetCPU vs CPU Script - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I'm currently on Beans R6 and just flashed imo's lean kernel v0.1. I had been using this script with the "powersave" mode with pretty good results. I was just read on the rootzwiki thread for imo's kernel and saw that people were using SetCPU. Is one better than the other?

I tried using the cpu script today, I have had great results with both. The only thing is (i can be wrong) is setcpu does not disable the second core when you don't need it. Again I could be wrong, but if it does then they pretty much do the same thing

i9020a overclocking

Has anyone been successfull? i have tried every OC kernel and as soon as i overclock it just reboots my phone to a freeze (only way out is to either pull the battery or adb reboot). That being said the UV kernel runs fine.
Not sure if it has to do with the I9020A series.
But overall, each NS phone can tolerate its own OC levels. Some phones can tolerate only up to 1.2 GHz, some may be able to achieve 1.4GHz (or beyond). And for some of the unfortunate, some aren't able to OC at all.
Thus this post. I hope my phone is'nt the issue. it would be nice to push a little bit more out of it if i needed it down the line.
I over clocked mine to 1.4 and it was fine, I leave it at 1.0 tho, this friggin thing is quick enough for now.
hmm how do you check your radio. I'm gonna try that as a last resort. And i can set mine as 1.4 but as soon as i run a resource heavy task (n64) my phone locks up and reboot freezes.

Not sure why a radio would affect your ability to OC but...
Menu -> Settings -> About Phone -> Baseband Version
the last 3 are what you want to look at "JK8/KB1/KB3"
List all the kernels you've tried. The best in my opinion is Netarchy's 1.3.0.3-CFS kernel using SetCPU
Try intervals of 1.2 GHz too. My phone can only go up to 1.2 GHz
Yeah actually i had tried all of the bfs kernels. I just succeeded in getting Netarchy's 1.3.0.3-CFS kernel. And i can run up to 1.4 . Maybe the brain fk scheduler does not play nice with 9020a's

awesome. I just prefer CFS because with BFS the boot animation doesn't show, and it bothers me.

i flashed the BFS first, and lost my boot animation. Then i switched to the CFS, and the boot animation still didnt appear.
Any ideas as to how i can get it back?
Also, is there anyway to recover the stock kernel? I'd like to have it handy to be able to go back to it.
thnks

Wipe dalvik and cache. Flash a rom that flashes stock. Like cm7 but netarchys is so much better than stock
You can also get ogdobbers which is stock + ext4 + voodoo.

Hey everyone,
This is an off topic question but does anyone know what happened to the 1.6 OC support for Netarchy? I loved to see the absurdly high quadrant scores and instantaneous screen transitions.
Thanks,
Justin

you're better off asking that in the netarchy kernel thread in dev forums.
netarchy could answer that... not a lot of phones can tolerate 1.6 GHz Oc
Thanks, yeah i felt a little bad posting the question here. Though ive been an avid user for a long time i have never posted so i didnt have sufficient rites to post in the decelopment section yet : (

[Q] Kernel Related Question

I am currently using TW_kernel-0415-voodoo with Heinz 57 Rom but i am seeing a lot of people using OTB Voodoo kernel. What are the advantages of the OTB Kernel vs my current kernel and where can i download this OTB Voodoo Kernel?
Heinz 57 has the OTB kernel built in, if you would've read the post you would know this.
Thanks for that info what i was saying is that i flashed the TW Kernel and is the OTB Kernel better maybe i did not explain properly my bad
The OTB has the abilty to be configured how ever you like. Overclock underclock undervolt. Whatever you like. Where as the others are set however there set. So it just depends on what ur after. I personally have tried JT's., Peanut butter jelly time, the comavolt and OTB and OTB was the one I liked the best so I've stuck with it.

What add was saying is if you flashed H57 after you flashed that old TW kernel, you would already have OTB because it flashes with the H57 ROM. If you flashed the tw kernel after, then you would need to flash H57 again (or just the OTB kernel, which is found in the fascinate forums, pay attention to the version there are 3 different OTB's one for each type of ROM, AOSP/CM7/TW.)
Do some reading in the OTB thread and you will understand a lot more about it and how to use it, read from start to finish please
Ok thanks man that makes sense and i will roll with OTB
Thanks for all the input appreciate it. I flashed rom again and i am currently using OTB Kernel now where can i find information on stable setting for overclocking and undervolting etc?
Check out the OTB thread in fascinate development. I recommend reading the whole thread as it has a lot of settings and info that others have tried.
Tap-a-Talked.
Stable settings seem to vary from phone to phone. I can't get mine to run over 1200. 1300 works for a couple hours then locks up. I see some say they can hit 1400. Trial and error is they only way to find out.

Just don't set any settings to boot in voltage control without a day or two of testing them out first.

[Q] can someone help me overclock?

ok guys i dont know weather its me or not
but i had flashed some kernals the are 1.5ghz but my quadrant score wont go up than 3010 highest i got.
some people on youtube shows them more than 5000 so i was wonder what was i doing wrong
at the moment im running CM7 lates build 158
and i notice some kernals wont work with lates buil
what kernals can i flash to overclock my phone as fastest?
and how.
thanks in advance
Try the cm oc/uv 0.4.2 kernel by faux, install setcpu (free to members here, don't have link at the moment). Inside setcpu is where you adjust the kernel speeds. From what I've noticed, a custom kernel will be clocked around the normal kernel speed (stability reasons maybe) so even with custom kernels your not running as fast as you can.

i done the setcpu all the way to 1000 but it didnt seems to helped. i didnt go into profiles cause i dont know what im doing in there.
What kernel are you using? You have to use a custom kernel to overclock. Setcpu will detect the settings created by the person that made the kernel and allow higher settings. With the kernel I suggested you can go up to 1.55ghz

What's the best overclock tool to use with the Skyrocket?

I came from the Hercules and I'm currently running Dewizzled 2.5 with Da_G's .42 kernel. If I use system tuner, it has no affect on the cpu... CPU tuner made my phone go into bootloop, and SetCPU makes it restart as soon as I go past 1.62ghz. With my hercules I had no problem running it at 1.89ghz
Hrm thats bizarre on cpu tuner and setcpu... have you tried the .42 with another rom? Also, if your able to use Da_g .42 without any SoD's (sleep of death) then you should really use Da_g .43 as it fixes an init script problem, which is likely why you werent seeing changes with system tuner. Seems alot of people have SoD's with various stock roms on Da_g's post .3 versions... so if you flash another rom and then start having them either flash .3 or change back to your working rom.
.43 Can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20090801&postcount=462
System tuner and setcpu also seem to force the second core online all the time, so its been highly recommended that you use a script to set the o'clock and such. Instructions are here, or if your not too saavy can use twopumpchump's pre-made version which is CWM flashable. (here)
It seems every cpu app I've tried revert the kernel back to it's stock settings. Faux's kernel is 384-1720 (I think) by default. I wish it was 192 as default. Every time I open up system tuner pro, setcpu, fauxclock, rom toolbox pro.....they don't stick. If anyone has a way of making it stick I know I'd appreciate it. Even if I choose set on boot it doesn't.

Thanks I'll flash that and see if it works I have a feeling that it's the mixture of Dewizzled and Da_G lol and I love TDJ's Darkside kernel but right now it's only available for the Hercules so it'll cause the screen orientation issue. Hopefully he'll make a port for the Skyrocket
I had the same problem but on coke rom with faux.. So I flashed the giedion script.. And now it seem to hold and go now deep sleep, and check it out in the faux kernel section in the development section.

I flashed faux's kernel and used system tuner but it still wouldn't stick until I rebooted... I have minimum set to 192mhz and screen off at 192 as well but in CPU Spy I only see 1728, 540 and Deep Sleep
How many overclock apps do you have on you phone at one time? And yes after you've made CPU adjustments click set on boot and reboot

1 at I time. I uninstall if it doesn't work before installing the next. i've had my phone with screen off for a while now and it seems that 75% it's staying at 540mhz, barely at deep sleep and rest at 1728mhz
I actually underclock my processor. To about 1ghz . As for your deep sleep issue I can't actually say cause I've never had the issue but look around the skyrocket threads. There's a lot of info on it.

Use faux clock for a faux version kernel. With any other kernel I have had great results with set CPU.

Flashing my first kernel, need some input?

I have synergy 1.3 right now on my phone. Have rooted and flashed this rom with no problems so far by following what I have read on this wonderful site. I would like to try and flash Imoseyon's leankernal. I have read that this works extremely well with synergy's 1.3. I have been following the steps from this guide > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709 and I have installed ez recovery. So couple questions.
1. I change the recovery to CWM 6.0.1, then hit the flash button and then the reboot recovery button?
2. will flashing a kernel change any settings on my phone for instance I am running apex launcher pro have everything set up the way I like it will all be the same after reboot?
3. is wiping cache/dalvik necessary? I have read elsewhere that when flashing kernels it is not necessary at all?
thanks!
1. Yes. I selected the 6.0.1 from the dropdown and then flashed it. I then made a nandroid and tested restore. I came from twrp 2.2 and wanted to make sure it restored fine.
2. Flashing the kernel will not effect your apps.
3. I didn't but it won't hurt clearing caches.

Oops. Should have mentioned that. I found out that if you get the kernel from his "latest" link it is the 12 version and not 12-2. I posted in the rootz thread about that but it likely got buried with the problems peppe are reporting about using the kernel with 1.4.
Good to hear that you got 2 (?) flashes with no problems. How's it working on your phone?

Yeah they need to update that link I had actually read about it earlier when reading through the posts but forgot about it last night when downloading the initial link. So far so good. Very smooth haven't had a chance to test batter life will do that at work today giving it a full charge this morning.
Here you go. This is my battery life on 1.3 with the lean kernel and the app CPU sleeper. When I go to sleep I under clocked it at 384 ghz or something like that..then over clocked at 1.7 with the on demand govener and the I/O set to so..this is by far the best battery life I've gotten.

That's pretty good battery life there! What are you underclocking? Min and max or just the min? What are you using to set your CPU clocks? I've been using RomToolbox. I have thinking about dropping the coin on SetCPU, but want to make sure it's what everyone is using to get this great of battery life. Sorry to thread hijack. I've come from a DX and didn't mess with these settings that much.

I have systemtuner but don't really know much about overclocking/underclocking at the moment. Not really sure what I should be touching. That is damn good battery life though.
