I get "Failed" every time i try to wipe data in TWRP. Any idea why? I can do all the others, factory reset, wipe system, cache and dalvik..but no data for some reason. Is this going to affect my ability to flash new roms? I ended up just restoring my current build. Anyone know whats up?
Not sure if it will help, but go into mount from the main menu and mount system.

Hello. I use Samsung Captivate smartphone.
When I chose "wipe data" in CWM menu (while installing new rom), it does not wipe it... does anyone know why?
thank you.
wipe data, wipe dalvik cache, wipe everything just to be safe
and when you boot your phone, do a factory reset

What do you mean does wipe? How's your new rom installation result? For custom rom it is needed to wipe otherwise you'll get a boot loop

New ROM is working well, but sometimes it is working slow... and sometimes Dialer is exiting when i want to type digits.
What cwm are you using? I'm on an atrix but I know some cwm on the atrix do not wipe properly and we have to use fastboot to wipe. Not sure how that works on your device.

CwM is: Dark Core Recovery v3.0.2.8x
Unfortunately I have to sell my Tranny due to financial reasons, was trying to find what should be wiped prior to selling. In Recovery, should I wipe data/ factory reset, then format data, cache, or something? I am trying to make sure none of my personal files are left over. Thanks for everyone's help, I hope I have better luck with the 199 dollar Nexus Tab.

If you have cwm just flash a stock .zip no root from asus or the dev forum and that'll wipe Everything.
If not factory reset is fine.
nvflash will wipe everything. Factory reset might work, but I think it preserves wifi passwords. Do a factory reset and see if it remembers your wifi connections. Installing a (stock) rom via a zip file will usually NOT wipe data.
To be safe, you should wipe the entire data partition.
so i updated cm10 to a newer version and i didn't wipe anything i just flashed the zip file and everything booted up fine but now im worried that something may go wrong in the future can anyone help??
Boot to recovery and wipe cache and dalvik. Reboot and you should be good.
If you start getting issues, consider reflashing will all the wipes.

I want to install a new ROM and wipe prior. But this is my first time using TWRP and dont know which WIPE to select that will not affect contents of my SDCard, or cause any other problems
Basically what is the equivalent of what i used to do in CWM prior to flashing
thanks
You'll know which one is which because TWRP warns you before you swipe to confirm that it formats the internal storage.

Haven't look at CWM so not sure but as far as I know they are named the same. Cache, DalvicCache, Factory data reset and system. The 4 at the top. Leave the rest alone unless want to wipe sd cards.

There is also the option to "Format Data"
So to wipe and flash a new ROM, ill wipe cache, wipe devlicCache, and wipe system? or format data?
I dont understand how i can phuck this up ...
I had CleanRom installed and all setup.
within TWRP i wiped cache/devlic and also "wipe system". I then installed SynergyRom
Booted for first time .. it knew my wifi, all apps were in place and functional, background was same as before, etc
when i go into SETTINGS>ABOUT it does say Synergy
but all is same as when in CleanRom
wtf?
EDIT, just tried again but this time selected "Factory Reset" before the flash, and it seems like this is what i wanted.

While in TWRP, Factory reset would "erase" the rom in the manner that you want. Then you flash Synergy.

Not sure if you will lose root. Since you are already rooted the best way to go is use a custom recovery and factory wipe in recovery.
Once you have a custom recovery installed, why would you even want to use the Factory Reset function in the stock rom? You can do everything you need to do with much more flexbility in TWRP.
No idea what happens on the M8 if you do this, but I can tell you that on the Transformer tablets a factory reset from settings wiith CWM or TWRP installed left you in a nasty forced reboot to recovery loop.
Don't do it!
Oh - and no, any kind of wipe of data/cache/dalvik will not affect root. If you wipe /system it will, but then you wouldn't have a rom installed anyway!
Just do the factory wipe in TWRP. That'll wipe everything but /system and /data/media/ where your personal files (pics, videos, docs) live. If you want to get rid of those too format data in TWRP.
Edit: Sorry, didn't read your post correctly. Did you only root with Weaksauce? No S-off, no permanent root, no custom recovery?
In that case it depends where Weaksauce is installed to. I can't remember - Weaksauce didn't survive for long after using firewater, but my guess is, it would be installed to /data. And yes - a factory reset would wipe the app and you would have to install it again.
