I just noticed this, because I rarely call contacts through phonebook, so I'm not sure how long it's been going on, but basically, when I click on a name, nothing happens. Long press on a name brings up the menu (Call Mobile, Edit Contact, etc). If I click on "View Contact", it says:
"The application Phonebook (process.android.process.acore) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again."
I'm on rooted R2BA024. Anyone have this problem/know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I deleted timescape when rooting, could that be the issue?
Also, I synched my contacts with Facebook, is there some way to use the display pictures from there as my contact pictures?

Yup, the phone book is associated with Timescape, so if you've deleted that, then your phone book doesn't work.
It happened to me before too. I had to clue how to reinstall it, so i ended up reflashing the phone lol.

The easiest fix is just to install a different phonebook app from the market (such as aContacts or Phonebook 2.0). The issue lies with viewing contacts directly through the SE phonebook. I deleted Timescape and have been using aContacts with no issues whatsoever.

I tried putting Timescape back on, but that didn't work. So I went to the market and downloaded Phonebook 2.0. It def works a lot better than the stock phonebook.
Thanks for all the help.

This, and make sure you check off high res photos in the settings. Perfect
The only gripe i have with the Galaxy Tab is the abominably slow Email app with Exchange integration. On any app start or when return from reading an Email it takes a full 30 or more seconds to load the Email list (i sync 1 week) and more often than not the screen / app becomes unresponsive and force closes.
I discovered that unlike Touchdown the in-built Email app simply downloads all Emails (1 week horizon) in all sub-folders (i have many, organization freak...). With Touchdown i can pre-select the folders i want on the Phone/Tab, which obviously makes the number of items much smaller.
By now i don't want to change from Email to Touchdown, because I like the integration of Emails & calendar entries, etc. native, but I have to work with the tab on work Email,... can't wait for every mail for 30 sec to load
Does anybody experience this too, and are there any remedies?
thanks
That isn't the case with me. I have 27 subfolders (really), not counting Inbox, Sent, Junk and Deleted folders. I need to manually refresh all but the main Inbox.
Response time moving from folder to folder is also a non-issue, and I sync back a full month (which is thousands and thousands of emails). I don't notice any extra delay when leaving Email and doing something else on the tab either.
I'm using Push, not timed polling, and no "peak schedule" so that may make a difference.
Sounds like you might have some database corruption going on. Try going into Settings/Applications/Manage Applications/All/Email and then "Clear data". This will nuke the mail on your device without changing your account settings. Sync up again and see if you still have the problem.
If you do, go into Accounts and Sync, click on your Exchange account, and click Remove Account, then reboot the Tab. Once you've done that, set your account back up, resync, and see what the situation is.

I will try clear data
I did see the issue reported (with no solution) on other forums though
Thanks
Edit: cleared data, same issue. I am hesitant to re-setup, because others have reported that that didn't help them either. I am on JM6, interesting that you don't hv the issue

Same here,
have 50 subfolders
use Countdown actually.

Same with me. Very slow!!
It was the same on the original firmware/rom, on JK5 and JM6. Also performed full factory reset but it makes no difference.
Using the eval of roadsync at the moment and it works pretty well but it does not integrate very well with the calendar and contacts apps. I will probably configure roadsync for email and the built in app for calendar and contacts to get a working solution. Annoying and very disappointing!!
Search for the port for Galaxy S of the email app from galaxy tab, it solved the slowdowns and it removed the security pass.

This worked for me no lag when opening up my corp inbox. Tab now 100% perfect.
Had to change the galaxy email app shortcut as it was set to open the previous account by default. Even though they were called the same it always opened a blank mail box . I then had to change to all accounts. Now resolved

Be careful, it's a very OLD email.apk, from a pre-release leak of the Tab ROM.
It's missing a few features, and it has a lot more connection issues. I tried it just to bypass needing a PIN, it was not reliable.

ok, this thread needs to be updated a bit, because just simply referring to the link is bad advise.
it broke my camera (driver crash), probably because the email.apk posted in the other thread linked does not have an *.odex file
i reverted back to the original email.apk and email.odex and my camera is working again.
scary
haha
now i am still stuck with a very slow email app

You have to use only the email.apk and keep the original Email.odex, then the camera works fine...
The only problem i found is that the version of the port is from an old version... anyone have a more recent version?

There seems to be a new firmware from samsung out... Wonder whether there is a new email client too...
Last time I tried to pull it from the fw, but didn't succeed.
Any solutions on this?
I think the problem is related with security from exchange. Because when I use the stock app I have to assign a pin to access the system, and the mail app works very slow, but when I use a modded version without the security it works normally...

The implementation of Exchange on Android is screwed... I use an Exchange 2010 server and not all my folders show on my android device. And even the ones which show dont update ona regular basis (My Sent folder updates once in a while... Right now it hasn't updated for 2 weeks)
On top of it it doesn't update all the features/items. For instance impossible to have birthdays for contacts. Or impossible to modify an event from the exchange calendar (It's only possible to delete it)
Not much to say. It's disappointing on a phone. It's ridiculous on a tablet (you expect at ;east the email client and the calendar to be perfect on a tablet)
Same happens to me since the beginning, anyone has found a solution???
I think it's unacceptable
Thanks
Alright so I happened across a post today that said the Camera was somehow dependent on the Email app. This wouldn't have meant anything to me, except for the fact that Barcode Scanner has been "malfunctioning" for a while now and I couldn't figure out why. So upon learning this new information, I reverted from the Galaxy Tab email app to the stock email app and viola! Everything was all peachy again.
Now, my question is this: Why would the Camera app have anything at all to do with the Email app? I know there's send picture by email and attach picture from camera and whatnot, but why would updating the email app break the camera/Barcode Scanner and if it's possible, how do I fix this?
Download this and copy the file to: /system/lib
http://db.tt/Zny9K7j
Rename the existing with ".bak" just in case.
Should be able to use any email.apk without fc on the camera after this change.
Awesome thank you! It all works now
You need a pre-JPY camera build.

Hi
As the title saids, how can I made pictures in people app better?
They look nice when you see all contact thumbnail, but when I open single contact
or making a call they look terrible, I can see every pixel.
Is there any easy way to fix this, other than uploading hires photo of every single contact one-by-one?
http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-4.0.html
Large photos
Android now supports high resolution photos for contacts. Now, when you push a photo into a contact record, the system processes it into both a 96x96 thumbnail (as it has previously) and a 256x256 "display photo" that's stored in a new file-based photo store (the exact dimensions that the system chooses may vary in the future). You can add a large photo to a contact by putting a large photo in the usual PHOTO column of a data row, which the system will then process into the appropriate thumbnail and display photo records.
EDIT:
FINALLY
a great app that fix resolution of contacts, haxsync, great, brilliant little app, uses facebook pictures
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.mots.haxsync
You would have to change as the ones Gmail saves on the server are low resolution.

I've tryed to change one contact picture on Gmail, I've put hires photo, but after sync, again its very low quality and ugly.
Same here!
Any solution to this?
My Galaxy S i9000 isnt on ICS yet, but i know this will bug me!
So as I understand:
To have a Hi-def contact image in the People app, we need to assign a new photo via our phones.
If we assign a photo via Gmail Contacts, we will end up with a low resolution image.
Thus this is not an Android issue, rather Google need to sort out the Contacts image function in Gmail

+1. i think google has to sort this out. maybe an option to choose HD image or low image.
Anyone find a solution to this? Only had my phone for one day and its already bugging me.
Same here.... Looking for a fix. I uploaded my own pic, but I DO NOT want to do this for each contact.
CSI enhance! But, other than that, there's no automatic way.
The contact images from Google+ are hi-res, however.
When I put manually hires pictures, after google sync, and installing other rom (also ics) and then restore contacts, again over google - they go back to low quality..

You know what i dont get? How does this not get noticed during testing? It seems everyone has this problem...no idea why its happening though
If that's how it was made, its not really a problem to them lol I use Ringo pro for my contacts and it uses higher quality pictures

I think they did notice it during testing. But the Android team is (probably) not the same as the Gmail team. This requires changes in Gmail, but they can't just go over there and say "fix this".
I do hope Google is working on this. I noticed it during the ICS introduction from Google as well: when they demonstrated the People app you could see a pictures of a seahorse that was low-res...
Meh, this doesn't look good: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=6b0562c425cc1f5d&hl=en . It's a post from a Google Empleyee who says they'll look into the problem. That was posted in november 2009
ICS is officially out, but still they are fuzzy :S
I experienced this issue from the very first day of my smartphone life. And google has not fixed it yet.
There are several other minor bugs that were not fixed since Eclair don't know why but how could google not know about those obvious issue and not fixing it...
try installing g+ app and then your contacts should receive better hi res pictures. Of course only the ones that have g plus as well.
I still can not belive how can they do something like this.
Every time someone is calling I see those pixels all over the screen :S
FINALY
a great app that fix resolution of contacts, haxsync, great, brilliant little app, uses facebook pictures!

But haxsync is not able to do custom links with your contacts. So if a contact in your Facebook does not have the exactly same name in your address book it does not work. My contacts do look a bit messy because of that app now...

I tried that I think. I opened gallery and select the video and click share. A big list opens up but "Android Message" isn't one of them. EDIT Ok looks like I need to dig into adjusting share either via normal method or something like "custom share" app. Thks for the info.
Ok. So it just doesn't let me share video at all in pie 9.02 using android message. In the gallery if I select any photo then Android Message appears in the share list. For a 1.5mb video it never appears. I suspect this is only limited to Android message and if I used whats app or something it would probably work. Anyone else have this issue?
I have been unable to find any app that fixes the issue. Any suggestions?

Check your apn, I just sent and received a video. I'm using 9.0.2 and messages as well
APN is ATT nextgenphone with an option for ATT phone. The SIM is from an Iphone and Ive tried using both.
I can open messages and click + and record a video from camera and send it . So sending video isn't the issue it's just messages isn't in the share list for existing videos.
