Ok, and are you on froyo or gingerbread?
Also, what method are you following in order to root?
did you make sure usb debugging is turned on under settings > apps > development?

Going through UnlockRoot. My phone connects as a USB Storage device even though USB Debugging is enable. And Gingerbread 2.3.6

Never heard of UnlockRoot.
Anyways, take a look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603220
As you'll see there are many ways to do it. Assuming you don't have cwm, I believe your best bet is flashing an stock pack through Odin which already includes root & Cwm.

I am using Odin from the unbrick app. Don't really know how to use a different version. Using the OEM USB cord. Funny thing when i go to control panel to uninstall previous drivers...they aren't in the list but when i search I find all kinds. When i try to install new ones it says they are already there and to uninstall first. Anyone know if when i do the search and they come up can I delete from there??

Heimdall under Linux works great for me - no clue how well it works in Windows.
It seems like Odin is pretty screwy and requires all sorts of settings Heimdall doesn't.

[Q] Can GingerBreak 1.2 ROOT galaxy s 4g?

I've been trying to root my Galaxy S 4g but failed every time... I went through all the appropriate threads evn the "Bible" but the oneclick rage against the cage will not work at all... Lost here...
Sorry, but you clearly didn't search enough. What you needed was on the first page of the development section.
Regardless, here's the stuff you need to root.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194032
Select whichever kernel you prefer. KH2 is supposed to be the most stable. Flash that through CWM or Odin (CSC).
Also, check SamsungGalaxyS4GMods on YouTube if you need a visual guide.
I would imagine since he's trying to root, he's not already running gingerbread. I'm betting he's on KD1, in which case he needs this thread
If you're trying to modify a phone in from-tmobile condition (KD1), that's the guide you want to follow
Edit: Herp Derp.... Didn't see the part where he said SOC didn't work...
Try this
Here, try this version of SOC. Also, you're enabling USB Debugging on your device, have made sure you're using the samsung USB drivers, and have tried more than one USB cable, right?

+1 All you need to root is a comp, usb cable and your phone, rooting is quite literally one click (superoneclick)...unless you use HDMI religiously, the roms here are awesome gingerbread goodness even if unofficial.

To make things easier on yourself, you should really find a comp, google "Superoneclick Infuse" and it should pop up step by step install instructions. (download link included)
Still, with the root/flash options, I too would like the official release from AT&T...the wait is getting too long.
Question -I assume I'll need to reload apps if I flash a ROM, correct?
I'll just leave this here...

[Q] Time to Root

Hello.
Can somebody please lead me to a credible "How To" root for my Infuse. I have watched many uTube videos and most seem to keep leading me to SuperOneClick. However, I haven't found a way to download the latest version. Plus, there seems to be a difference of opinion about downloading Samsung Kies drivers...some say to do this, others don't.
Thanks for the help

don't use kies.. download the USB drivers only. unless Samsung pulled them as kies is now in the support section for the infuse. (though it still doesn't work on current firmware LOL, Samsung = fail)
I would just flash the defuse or community kernel, them move on to the rom you want or maybe the kernel will be enough.

yeah check the one click back to stock threads by Adam outler for a way to flash defuse without root or cwm. (the kernel will root you and if you flash a rom it will likely be rooted)
and I was just laughing that Samsung can't even get updater software right foe their own device, meanwhile some independent guys backwards engineered their flash tool and made a cross platform open source alternative. Samsung sux at software, they can design and deliver technology ahead of the curve then they kill it with the software.
Please excuse my slowness. However, when I go to shortfuse.org to download the latest version of SuperOneClick, I keep getting the download for something called "iliVid" a free download manager. Before I hit the Root button to brick my telephone, to the far right of the SuperOneClick screen, there is a drop down menu: Should "auto" be displayed under exploit?
Thanks for the help.
PS

2) USB debugging is checked
3) I've unmounted my SD Card
You will not brick your phone doing this. It's harmless. Auto is fine.
