Why are we not seeing this option in most of the new ROMs for the One X? Is it a problem to incorporate. It's something that is nearly necessary for me. I found it in one ROM, but it was hit and miss. How about you Scott? Any plans to incorporate this soon?
Yeah if you want my input: I think its a kernel thing. since the stock kernel isnt wired that way, when the device passes its "sleep point" (the amount in minutes where it goes into deepsleep) it stops recording input from the Vol Keys and thats why we cant.
Thats the same reason we havent had Sweep2Wake (which I NEEEEDDDDD!!!) but the Tegra3 International One X already has it.
I'd like the sweep to wake also. The volume to wake is already incorporated in at least one from - Xi40 if I recall correctly.
use smart screen on lite from the play store..uses hand motion to wake up phone and turn off..as an alternative until we got the swipe to wake

Kernel source for .04 hasnt been released so devs have been hesitant to add it to kernels for .03... honestly, i wish i knew how to cook, because id have a kernel JUST for S2W

I have only noticed this question asked for a sense 3.6 ics rom in probably 2 forums and i noticed they didnt get that much response from the developers that were asked. But as i noticed a few others have been wondering, i would also like to ask, is there any type of way on sense 3.6 to add a mod like on RCMix version sense 3.5 where you can use the volume rocker for the camera key. This would be great and the only mods out there is one that is on the market and you have to set the volume key to the camera but it dont work to either turn the volume up or down, which ever button you choose. I chose up seeing i could just press down once and use my finger to turn it up on the screen after it pops up, pretty easy actually and worth the nice option. Plus down and power together are used alot and didn't want to screw up any functions that included the volume down action. if there is a way with an app to implement this i know there has to be a smart dev out there that can implement what this app uses permanently in the rom but make it so the volume key is used normally when out of camera or cam mode. Thanks for any help. Plus seeing this is my 10th post now, maybe i could even work with someone on creating this as i unleash my amazing knowledge to Xda that no one would of expected i have. Had to ask serious questions though some may need to know there. Here i come god dammit Xda.

I just saw this mod today for the international One X and I'm in love. I had the trackpad wake on my HTC Aria and I miss it so much. It'll be great to not have to reach to the top of our big awesome phones to turn them on.
edit: It's from Bricked-Kernel for the Tegra One X. Hopefully we'll be able to get this into our ROMs as well.

Wow, sign me up. Can you post a link to the thread? (I know its for a different phone, but potentially the dev efforts can be ported)
I had this on my vivid and loved it. I dropped my phone in water, the only thing that didn't xome back 100% was the power button, and this mod was a lifesaver! More convenient too! Hope it comes our way

Yes, yes yes -- I would love this mod. Coming from the iPhone 4, the HOX is my first android phone, and I hate having to hit that home button all the way at the top of the phone.
Now that we have kernel, devs can start baking this into their mods. Correct?

Yes with source its possible. It just needs to be ported over to our kernel.
sbryan12144 has already said he plans on adding it to his black out kernal that he already has posted in the dev section.

I'm honestly surprised there aren't a bunch of kernels out. I don't expect anything out of the devs cause its not like we pay them a salary. I'm still rocking the one kernel we have though

Yeah kernels are much harder than ROMs. I've taken coding classes and Unix courses. Compiling kernels just isn't fun to me. And the people of xda are picky and complain if anything goes wrong.
BTW does this mod prevent deep sleep? Since you have to have the capacitive sensors always on to detect touch? Its like keeping a portion of the screen on.

Good question honestly don't know the answer you may try and take a look at the international one x dev section I.believe the kernal named brick has it incorporated in it.

That looks super slick! The power button on the HOX does indeed seem to be a bit finicky. That was one benefit of the Seidio active case. The power button was much easier to manipulate. Does this mean that the device doesn't actually "sleep" since it's waiting for input on the hard buttons?
Personally, i think tap2wake would be more awesome. Would better emulate the aria's trackpad. Just tapping the home button.
Also, you still go into deep sleep. lol, with slide2wake on the galaxy nexus, you had to slide accross the screen itself and even then, the phone still went into deep sleep.
The deep sleep thing was a valid concern. I remember when trackball wake was first incorporated into Aria's liberated 2.2.2 ROM the phone wouldn't sleep correctly. This was eventually fixed though.
I think tap2wake would yield too many false positives to be useful.

Hello,
I have had a UK Vodafone Sensation for about a year and decided to get one that had been rooted to play with. I got it off ebay. It was really really good other than battery life ,,,, and then I spotted that the softkeys (the four buttons at the bottom of the phone) are permanently on ... unless I turn the phone right off.
When the phone arrived it had 4EXT with ICE and Sense and it was only come the evening of the second day I spotted why battery life was not good!! I tried various thing - Screen Filter, Juice Defender and other bits and pieces and then saw the AOKP Jelly Bean ROM and decided I'd start from scratch .. well almost. I'd also noticed that it said the phone type was Sensation XE.
I replaced 4EXT with CWM and flashed the AOKP Jelly Bean ROM. All went according to plan considering I'm a 63 year old noobie!! Well OK until I saw the softkeys were still illuminated all the time unless I turned the phone off. I'd got my apps and contacts on the SD card and installed the purchased version of APEX Pro that I'd been using on my non rooted phone. No amount of changes to anything I can thikn of turns them off ... but my phone does now say it's a SENSATION rather than a SENSATION XE.
I've run the battery flat and started afresh with it newly charged which has increased battery life but with these darn softkeys lit up it will never be good..
I have thought of taking it into a shop where they mainly deal with smashed screens all day long and see if it is possible to have the led backlight for the softkeys removed. I've looked at any amount of youtube videos and they all stop short of showing me the bit I want to see!! If the keys don't work afterwards its no drama as I can put 'Navigation' keys at the bottom of the screen from the ROM.
Any ideas anybody?? Your help and advice will be much appreciated.

Hi Ganeshp. I tired to install gscript lite when I was running ICS. I managed it this time by reading what it actually said to do!!! lol.
Unfortunately even though it seemed to install ok and I ran the scripts ok it wouldn't actually get fully running before saying it had stopped. It seems other had had a similar experience. I tried various reboots etc and it still wouldn't run which is a shame as it really looked like it was the answer.
Thanks again but unfortunately I'm still looking for an answser,
Phil
Would it have anything to do with kernel setup? Just a thought. I don't know enough to actually advise you, but your led issue may be linked to the kernel.
some roms have the option built in to disable the capacitive buttons backlight, by using tweaks. ViperS rom has it built in, or you could download LeeDroid/Darkforest tweaks in the dev section. theres an option in the tweaks to disable the backlight. give that a shot before having someone look at it

I've been trying a couple of things from elsewhere on this site and still no joy. Tried tasker and rootdim but still no joy.
I couldn't see how to download LeeDroid/Darkforest tweaks ... only saw the option to flash a new rom and I don't really want to do that. If I could download just the tweaks I'd be willing to try that but not the full package.
Tks again for your help ... holiday tomorrow and I think I'll have to leave this until after I come back.

LeeDroid tweaks and Darkforest tweaks are both for Sense 3.6 roms. ViperS is Sense 4 so these wouldnt work with that rom, but tweaks are already built in to it
LeeDroid= 3.32 base firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24535142&postcount=5
Darkforest= 3.33 base firmware http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=30132538&postcount=5
Can't you just do that by going into android settings and setting the backlight duration to never. OR You can install Total screen control from Android market. Go onto settings> softkeys backlight and click disable backlight. Then you have to select a screen filter value at which to disable softkeys backlight eg. 50% value. Your phone's backlight should turn off when your screen filter value is set to 50%. You have to be rooted for this to work.

I'm now back from holiday and have tried all the things mentioned in this thread and they are either not available for my phone or they install ok but don't do what it says on the box. Hello all,

Yes I agree. I was just looking for a way to do that and liked it on the Nexus 7 UHD. I was hoping we could use Xposed.
Wouldn't the Kernel require init.d capability to load modules like DT2W? I think the kernel needs some flags set in it to allow the module to load.
I seem to remember Franko (or his legion of loyal subscribers) talking about this in his kernel threads.

If you add the module instead of flashing a kernel with it built in you'd have to make an init.d script to start it on boot. I'm not sure if the difference in soc will cause any issues but I found the related files doing a search in flar2's git.
Ohhhh. I was wondering what all was involved to get closer for it to work on it. I hope someone can come up with something or maybe include it in a future ROM. I hate to try to find the power button and then push on it. I am glad to see this tablet has a future on XDA! :fingers-crossed:

One thing I do to avoid the power button for screen on is to lift the stylus up. Not as good as a double tap but effective.
The Smart Cover cases also help work around this issue.
I hadn't thought of the stylus trick. I did go a head and get the magnetic case. It works really well.

You can use the Knockr app off the Play Store. It can be buggy, but it should do what you want.

Personally, I like the Swipe app better. Swipe from edges to go to the last or next app, and double tap the side to open up the Recents. GMD is packed with a lot of other features, but I don't think they're all helpful. Swipe is better at app-switching. It's cleaner and has nice animation options as well. GMD seems good if you want to use a lot of custom gestures though. Technically, I guess you can use both. I do also have fancy gestures enabled in Nova Launcher.
During my Nexus 5x days, my daily driver was Pure Nexus, and one of my favorite features was the ability to enable/disable the flashlight/torch via holding the power button (with the screen off mainly).
I know PN is available for the Pixel right now, but I'm trying to stick with Stock for as long as I can so I can take OTA's. Does anyone know how to get the same torch functionality? I am currently rooted and have found several non-root apps that allow 3 taps of the power button to enable torch...but it's not the same thing as being able to long-press with the screen off! I liked being able to take my phone out of my pocket, hold the power button to enable torch, then tap the power button one more time to disable...all without turning on the screen.
Thanks all in advance for your help!
Did you ever find something? I miss that I could do that on my n5x too.
Maybe not exactly what you are looking for but I am loving Torchie right now. It has brought one of the best and simplest things from custom roms. It tends to be a bit of a power hog when enabling use with the screen off, but I have found it is pretty easy to manage. Non-root as well.
I wish Android would add this feature as stock it's such a useful feature

I ended up biting the bullet and going to Pure Nexus. It has been rock solid for me, and this feature among others make it well worth the effort and few nuances there are. I will agree, though, it would have made it a tougher decision to move away from stock if Google had this feature built-in!

I've been with pure Nexus every step of the way with this pixel and bless that guy's heart for continuing the good work that he's been doing.
but like you I want Oreo now and a way to activate the flash light just by holding down the power button when the screen is off
Honestly this was really the only reason that I stayed on pure Nexus for so long and one of the main reasons that I actually root in my pixel in the first place for. This is one of the most convenient modifications I've ever ran across and I actually use it every single day for so many different things. I just upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo and am horrified that there is no simple solution for this on Oreo yet. Could somebody please implement this into Oreo somehow on the system level, possibly within the kernel or something of that nature?
Just wanted to give an update. I found button mapper with root seems to work great with volume down for the flashlight. It seems to break a couple things though
(volume down to take picture and DND mode) and I need to contact the developer. It works great for turning on and off the flashlight though with screen off or on. (requires root).

First of all, I'm glad some of you are resurrecting this post. Maybe someone much smarter than me can explain how the developer of Pure Nexus is able to implement this? These developers never ceases to amaze me in what they can add on the front of functionality...but is it not possible to develop (again, someone much smarter than me) a flashable zip to implement this?
I like how much Google continues to add in to stock Android on customization and features that we used to have to root for. This flashlight mod would almost certainly keep me on stock...
