just tried tethering my nexus s to my work desk top to be "off grid" but i'm having issues.
I cant for the life of me tether the NS to the computer (running windows xp -32bit).
i was able to do this fine on the n1, but no go on the nexus. the computer just doesn't recognize it.
I've down loaded the tetherxp.inf file, but when point the setupwizard to it, it can't find it.
wth??????
then i start doing to research and read that the NS tethering isn't supported by window xp?? just win7, win vista and linux???
is this true???
what have you guys been experiencing?

arg. just did that.
didn't help. oi!!!
still getting the "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software" pop up.
i'm giving up on this.
the tether function is "on" on the phone, but my comp doesn't recognize the connection in the network settings.
sucks as i'm trying this on a fresh XP os installed notebook. so i don't know what could be causing this... (yess all updates have been updated)...

no problemo
This definitely isn't working with Windows XP.
This worked fine with my Nexus One. I had to install tetherxp.inf for it to work.
With the Nexus S, I removed all devices, uninstalled the drivers and started from scratch. No go with either the tetherxp.inf file or the RAR file posted earlier in this thread.
I can't find any other documentation on the Net that shows that Nexus S can tether with Windows XP.
Has anyone gotten this to work?
try this...
go to the PDAnet website http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php download their software onto your computer(free), then follow the directions on the screen. it will install the latest drivers onto your computer. i had to do that with my work computer too.
Well, I did that and now I just have a copy of PDSNet on my machine
I still can't get XP to recognize my Nexus S. When I plug it in I still get the New Hardware box that asks to find software for USB Device.
What I did was to add entries to tetherxp.inf for Nexus S which matched the signatures in device manager after I connected my phone to xp and turned on usb tether. I then installed the driver from tetherxp.inf.
Bazinga.

Hi Guys,
I had a rooted 4.4.2 device, when I got the the 4.4.3 upgrade and I think that from then I cannot see my device on my laptop.
(I am not sure of that because I CAN see it on my work desktop...)
Anyway, whatever I do - I get the following results:
1. Device manager shows me under the "Portable Devices" the brance F:\
2. When I try to install new ADB drivers, it tells me that "WPD fileSystem volume driver" is the best for me...
Storage usb connection setting is set to be MTP.
Meanwhile, I cannot see my nexus 5 files on my laptop
Please assist, Thanks!!!

Delete the device in device manager and then let it find it again.

If you mean to uninstall it, then I did it couple of times, and now again when the device was disconnected. Then I reconnected the device to the USB port, and scanned the deice manager for changes.
I got the same result - see attachement.
Delete then reboot both devices. Connect phone again. If same, delete device and reboot phone whilst still connected
If that fails, delete and use "universal naked driver"

Never seen that before. Your drivers obviously aren't set up right. Google 15 second adb drivers xda and use that to install the drivers. It'll also set up adb/fastboot which you may or may not need. It gives you the option

It's supposed to work fine even with it on, at least it did when I had it on. Tested on Win 7, 8, 8.1 and 8.1U1 lol. I never had any issues with USB ever.
Or use Linux, it'll work right away..
It's not set to Camera (PTP) instead of Media Device (MTP) ?

Thank you all for your kind help.
I tried at least most of your advises - but there were no joy...
I think that the best I should do now is somehow clean up my system from old drivers and related installations.
So, taking aside the option of reinstalling windows, can you share with me some procedures that will enable me to get rid of all old drivers and files and to reach a state of a clean system, so I can then start reinstalling the drivers again?
Thanks a lot!

Unplug your device from your computer. Open up Device Manager. Plug in device. Look for the device in device manager. It may have an odd name, but you'll see something pop up when you plug the phone in. When you find it, right click on it and click "Update Drivers". Then click the "Browse" option. Then select "Let me pick from a list". Then click something along the lines of "Android ADB driver". This should let it properly communicate with your computer and let you browse data files on the phone.

Yes, the same driver will work for MTP. If your computer can successfully communicate with your phone via ADB, then it can transfer data as MTP. Is USB debugging enabled on your phone? And, does ADB actually work right now? When you type "adb devices" in a command prompt, does it give you a device serial?
EDIT: I'm not familiar with the 8.1 Entreprise version, I didn't think it would affect anything, apparently it does

I rolled the driver back, but it keeps updating to it. I've uninstalled and deleted the driver, yet it keeps reinstalling it. Somehow, my MTP connection started working again. Not sure how though. If I knew which KB update it was, I'd uninstall it from there.

The other option is to manually change the driver in Device Manager from the ACER one to the Google one. I think it's happened as M$ have the ACER driver digitally signed whereas the Google one isn't so it'll always choose the signed driver...

I'm not sure how to do that, because, of course, if you try to update it, it will say that the Acer one installed is already the best driver. And after uninstalling it, upon plugging it back in, it updates to the Acer driver automatically again.

This worked for me
Hi guys, I had the same problem. My phone was configured as MTP but when i connected to Win 7 it would appears in the Device Manager list as "ADB", this wouldn't allow me to transfer files so what worked for me was:
1- Connect your Mobile to the PC and it appears as ADB Driver (In the device manager screen), rignt click on ADB and select Browse my computer for driver software.
2- Choose let me pick a from list of devices on my computer and choose the option MTP instead of ADB.
3- Did that and problem solve, hope this helps for you !!
Delete this Acer ADB driver when you uninstall it
I have the same issue. Here is what I did and that resolved the issue. Go to "Device Manager" to uninstall the Acer driver. The uninstall window pops up asking you if you want to uninstall it. There is a check box that says "Delete the driver." Make sure you check that off and then go ahead and uninstall it. Once that's done, plug your Nexus 5 back in. The correct MTP driver will now be installed and your computer will recognize the phone normally. Hope this helps.
Experiencing the same on Windows 7...have tried everything suggested
Really hoping someone can help because I've just about had it with this. I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have a brand new Nexus 5 16GB. As others have indicated, when I plug my phone into my computer with debugging enabled, it creates an "Android Composite ADB Interface" device listed under "ACER Device" in Device Manager. See attachment.
I have tried every permutation of the 'uninstall driver, manually install Google USB driver' solution, to no avail. The best way I can describe what I'm seeing is that Windows is forcibly categorizing the device as an 'ACER Device' even though the driver files themselves are telling it otherwise.
If debugging is DISABLED, and EITHER MTP or PTP is ENABLED, everything is just fine - the default Windows drivers for those devices kick in, and no 'ACER Device' category is created.
If debugging is ENABLED, and MTP and PTP are DISABLED, when I tell Windows to use the Google USB driver, it says that the device could not be installed.
If debugging is ENABLED, and MTP is ENABLED, the 'ACER Device' issue rears its ugly head even when I tell Windows to use the Google USB driver.
I've already disabled Windows automatically fetching a driver online, so that's not to blame.
If this is the result of a Windows Update, does anyone know the number of the update so I might try uninstalling it? I can't seem to find it despite searching.
Hoping someone out there can help. Thanks!

Download the correct drivers and after connecting the phone to the PC/Laptop, go to Device Manager and right-click the entry with the yellow triangle, then Update Driver, Browse My Computer For Drivers, then Let Me Pick From A List of Available Drivers On My Computer and then choose the drivers you downloaded and install.
If still facing issues, driver signing may be an issue, so search the internet on how to install drivers after turning off driver signing on the PC/Laptop.
