I have found a weird bug that I can't seem to find reported anywhere else. I'm fully stock, fully updated, rocking a custom tone, but that's just an audio file so that probably doesn't matter. I did, though, delete it, redownload it, switch to defaults, everything along those lines before stumbling on one last guess.
Okay, here's the bug. The notification tone gives only an extremely short portion of the notification before going silent.
Solution - and tested - The person you're getting that messed up tone from has reached it's limit of text messages stored on your phone. Simply delete the text messages and you're golden.
Theory: Educated guess here, I think the phone receives the text, sets off the notification process, then does the deleting process. When the deleting process is triggered it stops the tone. Having less than maximum texts gives a full notification.
I actually had 2 people on my phone at full messages, both of them were getting partial tones. Now they are, one at a time deleting the texts, receiving texts and giving full notification alerts.
funny that i found this thread and my phone just started doing it, will delete the txt and reply back with confirmation

No buzz kill here, I couldn't find the solution myself so I'm glad there is one... now I go to read that thread.
On second thought... since I came up with the exact same solution, it' smuch the opposite of a buzz kill, it makes me happy to have figured out the actual and correct thing.
Then in that case, glad I could help!

The best solution I found was to put the ringtone as a silent one for msging and use tasker to play your notification sound whenever a msg is received.

Have any Captivate/Galaxy S forumers experienced the issue where, when replying to a text message right after it is received, your reply is placed BEFORE the text message on the threaded SMS view. It is a superficial issue I suppose, but it can get confusing trying to follow conversations and such.
Has anyone heard of this problem, or even better, a fix for it? I've tried setting the system time a few minutes later/earlier with no real results.
yes i have also noticed this myself. it is a pain sometimes
For me, the replies to my messages are actually date stamped 5 hours backwards so show up muchj earlier in a threaded conversation. I have not been able to find a working fix but a workaround was to install Handcent sms (free in Market). It threads everything properly and is actually a pretty nice widget that shows you the latest texts....
Would love a native fix however so please advise if you've found one...
I had this problem. I fixed it by manually setting the system time.

I'm having the same issue. For me it's related to texts coming from a different time zone. If I manually set my time to the time where the texts are coming from, everything is fine. I've been using Chomp SMS, which is pretty nice, but I'll try Handcent. When I restart the threads are correct sometimes but eventually get messed up again.
For me it's from every single phone number, no matter what the time zone. But i've temporarily fixed it with handcent, though the default sms client is classier looking.
Mine did this as well and to solve the problem go into your settings and manually adjust your clock 1 minute up so if its 12:30 set your clock to 12:31 and this solved my problem, hasnt messed up since i did this
Ok, so I get a new text message.
I turn on the phone, notice in the lockscreen someone texted, and see an excerpt of the text. I say, ok, lets slide that messaging icon into the ring and read that message. Well, that message is not there. No message at all from that person. If its someone ive been talking to, it usually shows what i said last only, and their reply is no where to be found, although i just saw it in the lockscreen or the top bar.
I have also tried the handcent sms app to see if it could help me. same thing occurs there too.
ANY idea what could be causing this? It seems to be doing it all the time now. My only way around it is to use google voice only. ugh.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What's the limit you have set for deleting texts after a certain period? Might have something to do with that.

yeah, ive been using it, but its still a hassle. My txts were coming through just fine the day i got it, then it got wierd afer 48hrs of use.
Thanks for the help, Ill keep looking as well for an answer.
I am a very similar issue, at first I thought I was missing text messages as well.
I got a few keywords from my friend who sent the missing text and when I did a search, the text was there, but they had the wrong time stamp.
For instance missing text was sent at 17:44, when I search I found the text stamped and threaded in as if it was received at 12:40.
The wrong time is variable, I have found other texts that was stamped received the previous day.
Unfortunately I don't have a solution, and quite frankly am getting really frustrated with this problem.

I looked around and didn't see anything as specific as this, so I'll ask the question.
A lot of my notifications don't work 80% of the time, whether it's gmail, sms, or a game notification. All notifications are set to be on, but I have a theory. With Ice Cream Sandwich, there is the option to hold the back button on your phone and it will kill your app. I wonder if this might be a culprit. For instance, if I'm reading a text and hold the back button to kill the app, is it possible for that to kill the push notification as well? Granted it could be the ROM I'm using, but no one else on that particular forum has any problem like I've described. Does anyone have any ideas or has this happened on a regular basis? Most things I can live without, but if someone's trying to send me a text message, it might be hours before I think to check it and find out that hours before someone had sent me one.
Thanks in advance for any help.

what rom? how did you flash said rom? Full wipe of data/cache/dalvik? did you restore ANY data or settings with tibu and if so which ones? to me this is sounding like a bad flash. back-to-kill will only take out the active application, notification and sms retrieval is a background process and not susceptible to that.

The rom is The Collective's Redemption. I did do everything mentioned above and the only thing I used tibu for was to restore my apps, but not to restore phone settings. I haven't tried to reflash, and maybe that will be my fix. I still want to see if others might have had this happen to them.
Thanks for the suggestions Darunion.
Been running( mostly) Red for a couple of weeks. I have not seen that issue. The first flash of it did have some strange notification behavior. The contacts app would let me assign ringtones to individual contacts but would still play only the default ringtone when I got a call. Everything has been working properly since the second flash.

Reflashing seems to have fixed any notification problems I had.
Thanks.
Maybe someone else can help me with this.
Every so often during the day I keep getting a random notification sound with no visual as to what it is. The sound is 5 tones going in a descending pattern and sounds metallic. I do not have NFC turned on nor the facebook app. I checked all my apps and sounds. I even read a lot of threads else where and tried everyone's suggestion. Still does it. I searched my phone for *.ogg and *.wav files. Nothing.
I do have a wallet case but since NFC is off its not that. I've never heard this sound before. It only started a few days ago and I've have this phone for over a month. FYI I'm running the Hola launcher and omni swipe if that helps. Any suggestions?
I am thinking to uninstall ALL my apps and see if it still does it, but I really dont want to have to do that if I can avoid it.:silly:

It's not the launcher. It doesn't matter.
This is why I hardly ask anything here. No one cares.
If your not a popular member you never get a reply.
I'll just ask my questions elsewhere where people actually care about you.
Are you using googles smartlock feature? When I first started using it I was receiving this weird notification which sounds like what you're talking about. It don't do it no more for some reason but man was it so annoying not knowing what the heck your phone is trying to tell you.

Hey there.
I have been checking back on this topic for a while because my wife's Note Edge is having the same exact problem. I even reached out to Samsung Mobile Support and they can't even figure out what it is. All they did was tinker with the sound settings and asked me if it was fixed. I have tried disabling all possible notifications from all possible apps. The only thing left is to do a factory reset it seems. Any luck on your end?

Well that's not a pessimistic attitude or anything whatsoever! lol. Here's the thing... It might help to try and remember that nobody is on here getting paid to spend their time answering your questions all day long, so unfortunately it's inevitable that there will be times when people might just have to figure their problems out on their own or just be forced to wait until someone responds.. no matter how "popular" they might be.
This entire community wouldn't exist if weren't for all of the people on here who have been and are willing to spend their own free time sharing their knowledge with and helping others, so it's pretty ridiculous to sit there and act like it's a personal assault whenever nobody answers your question right away! From my experience on here people (including myself) are always more than willing to help out whenever they can (as long as the people are willing to help themselves too), but since nobody is getting paid people need to realize that it's more of a "self help" type of community than anything.
There are literally mountains of freely available information for people to search through to try to find their answers with, and with enough determination and persistence 99% of the time people could answer their own questions without ever even having to ask. So I'm definitely not trying to be rude or anything but it's just all in how you look at it.. because when people come here expecting to be handed all of the answers then they're most likely going to be disappointed and upset, but when you come here looking to help yourself instead you'd be surprised how much of a difference it makes and how rarely you'll have to ask any questions.
Anyway I'll try helping with some suggestions below since they're having the same problem too..

Ok I've actually had a similar problem in the past and I can't guarantee anything but hopefully this might help..
In my situation it turned out being "profiles" that I didn't realize were turned on, and they were causing rogue and unknown sounds to happen because they were overriding my ringer and media volume settings based on the time of day it was. So all I had to do was turn off the profiles and it solved the problem, but it depends on the rom that you're on as to whether or not profiles like that are even an option.
If not another thing I'd recommend doing (and I'm obviously not sure what all you've tried so I'm just trying to cover the bases just in case) is to get a root explorer (as long as you're rooted.. if not I'm honestly not sure what to tell ya) and navigate to the root folder .. then go to "system/media", and inside there should be a folders called ui, notification, and ringtones.. and this where all of the default notification sounds are located. I would go through and listen to each one of them (they should be .ogg files) and see if you can find a match to the one you're hearing, and if you do then you can just rename that file .bak instead of .ogg and that should stop it from playing randomly (basically a bandaid type fix).
If it's not any of the system sounds then you've basically narrowed it down to where it's most likely an app that's making the sound. If that's the case then what I'd do is go into Titanium Backup and filter it to only show "user apps" and then have it sort them by the date which they were installed, and then I'd just start going down the list looking for apps I've installed that could possibly be making the sound.. that way even if you have a general idea around when the problem started happening you can match that time frame up with apps that were installed around that time to narrow down your search (if that makes sense anyway).
Anyway that's what I would do to start at least and hopefully it helps!

heh. I have an idea. You know those crappy applications on the edge? Some of them are games. I remember i used to have this issue with the memory one. Remove them from the edge. No root required. Just remove the panels from the panel configurator.

Not sure if this is gonna help you or not. But yesterday I started to getbthe same metallic noises, I only recall 1 change to my settings and that was installing the live wallpaper on the lock screen to show me pictures based in weather and such. And since then every hour or so it makes the sound. Try to find out if you did the same thing.
Random notification sound
I am having a similar problem which has been widely reported but none of the suggested fixes are working for me. The notification tone keeps sounding in a seemingly random way. There is no notification to match the tone. This is not just a beep or random noise. It is the default notification tone. (Skyline for completeness). This happens maybe 5 or 6 times in 24 hours. It has been happening for about 10 days.
I am running Android 8.0.0 (Samsung Experience version 9) on a Galaxy S8. The phone is not rooted.
I have turned off all notifications individually.
I have turned off notifications for the phone.
I have turned off notification reminders (it was never on).
I have turned off NFC and bluetooth.
I have checked under Accessibility settings.
I have uninstalled every app installed in the last 3 weeks.
I can reproduce the NFC and credit card issue but that is a single beep and not what I am talking about.
I have installed 3 different notification log readers (NS Notification, Notif log notification history and Notification Log). None of them show any activity at the times when I am getting the spurious tone.
When I re-enable notifications for Texts, Messenger and WhatsApp, I still receive these as normal.
I recently got a new dual band router and thought maybe the tone was the phone jumping from 2.4 to the 5 Ghz band or vice-versa. It wasn't. I thought it might be the phone jumping from telecoms provider to WiFi. Tested that too and that's not it.
Next step is a factory reset which I am trying to avoid.
I know this is bringing problems to the table, not solutions but this is really bugging me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I posted this in the AT&T S8+ Forum, figured i'd post in here too, might get faster help. I did do a couple searches before posting, but if someone has already addressed this I apologize.
Hi all, I seem to be unable to get individual text notifications working on my S8+. That is, I go into the contact, I find where it says "Message Tone" and I set the tone I'd like to use. When I go in and look, everything seems to be correct.
Then when a text comes in, the default notification is still used. This is the case when both a tone that I added is used, or a built in tone. I had thought perhaps it was because I was using a 3rd party texting app (Textra, was not a fan of the default Samsung app), but even when I reset to the Samsung messages app, this was still the case (I even tried restarting the phone after setting messages as the default, just to make sure).
Anybody else having this issue? Anybody fix it? I've tried everything I can find, hopefully one of you can point out something obvious that I've missed.

I am. I've attached a screenshot for a contact I'm using as a test (my GVoice number). It LOOKS like it's set up correctly (at least to me) just not working correctly. Personalized Ring Tones seem to work, but not text notifications.
The phone is doing a couple other quirky things. I'm wondering if it might be time to just say "F it" and do a hard reset.

Yeah, I don't think I'm doing anything differently. Weird that ring tones work but not text messages. I had a couple different contact managers installed (don't really like the Samsung one) and thought maybe they were causing the issue, so uninstalled them and rebooted. Still no go.
I do like the look of the dark theme for the contacts app though, definitely gonna change it to that!
I also use Textra on my S8+, as I don't like the default one, and you set the personalized tones in Textra not contacts.
In Textra, go to one of the texts from someone that you want to customize and long press it, then go the three dot menu in the upper right corner and select customize. Then select Notifications, then notification sound and pick the one that you want.
Works perfectly...

Still a little weird it wouldn't work when I reset the phone to the Samsung app, but now I don't care because this works!! Thank you so much.
