Bricked while downgrading from ICS to GB - Motorola Atrix 2

Phone : unlocked AT&T
What was done : used multiple ways to get back to GB including "A2_go_bak_win". at i ended up in boot loop.... then i used RSD lite to do the same this it failed in between .... (battery was 50%)
After this the phone's screen is absolutely blank ... no powering up... just one catch if i put battery into the phone it starts getting warmer....
Any suggestions.....

When you flashed through RSD did you use the ICS patch? The patch skips the mbmloader which is the file that bricks your phone. Also Jim's script usually has to be run twice before the phone boots (first time it just hangs on Moto Logo).
If you didn't use the patch your phone is gone. Nothing you can do besides get a replacement....

It looks like he tried to use my script, but got the odd flash that 1 in 10 people seem to get. All the OP needed to do was rerun the script, that is posted in my thread about the return to GB thread. If it fails the second time, all you need to do is use RSDlite, and point it to the XML file that came within my script.
I hate to tell the OP, but you are bricked.

This is why im still scared to downgrade back to GB.

Look, as with everything on this board, read WHOLE threads before you attempt anything... most times people post an issue and then there are ways posted on how to get around it.
If you follow the directions and have an issue post in the thread and one of us have most likely encountered it, and give you fix... DON'T do as the OP did and just start trying things. One of us devs or Sr. members will get you you taken care of fairly quickly, but panicing and just starting to try things is the easiest way to brick.

I wouldn't want to downgrade either.. to scared I might mess up

$122 is cheap for a motherboard replacement. Consider yourself lucky it did not cost you more.

Bricked my Thrill already

Resolved the problem
bricked mine as well, but i did it with DynamicRam's tweaks that was posted on another forum and confirmed working on the Thrill. Mine is stuck at the LG boot screen and will NOT go passed it.
Ive tried recovering it. doesnt work. Tried the LG Recovery software and sadly it doesnt support the Thrill yet.
Well it makes me feel better knowing I'm not alone, but it still sucks for us huh? I was gonna try the unbricking method for the Optimus 3d but I'm afraid it wont work because it's a European ROM instead of the stock one for the Thrill. I am willing to try anything at this point but I don't have much confidence in this unfortunately.
Hey guys im really sorry to hear about your problem... i also replaced the app_process and system_server files as well as the 99 tweaks no boot animation file... all permisions checked then rebooted... worked great on my rooted thrill already see better battery life !!!
All i can tuink of is u prolly noticed with root explorer you need to click the mount/unmount button to paste the modded files... right after you check permissions u need to click the mount/unmount button again... that could screw it up if you didnt...
I have not heard of anyone getting a recovery working on this yet... i would take it back where ever you got it and tell them its broke... and get a replacement...
Good luck

Thanks for the advice, but won't they see that it's been rooted after they finally figure it out and charge full price on a new one or something? I'd rather be 100$ down and wait out a fix than $600 down total.

factory reset i believe does not rewrite the system partition.. only clears the data partition meaning the build.prop you edited, which is in the system partition, and is not going to be replaced by a working one...

Hard brick?

I successfully flashed to att ICS using Jim's method. Then I decided to roll back to 2.3.6 and used Jim's ICS back to 2.3.5 fxz fix zip file. The RSD stopped at 5/19 reboot bootloader for a long time and the screen was off. I hit the power button trying to turn on the screen without thinking. Then I realized that I was flashing! It was too late and I saw FAILED on RSD. My A2 cant turn on anymore. I did not unplug or pull the battery. Any help would be appreciate!

Can you boot into fastboot by holding power button and vol down.If can you just reflash it using rsd lite.Tell me more detail about your atrix 2 current rom and which version of rom you are flash with rsdlite.

Exact same problem has occurred to me as well.
I did replaced the files Jim created to FXZ back to 2.3.6 from ICS
My Battery was fully charged at the time of flashing. Flashing stopped at 5/19 reboot bootloader for 15 mins then tried rebooting it manually but it didn't started.
Now I've tried everything but it is not even starting in Fastboot
Please help me with this, I don't want to start any new thread so posted my problem here.
EDIT: I think this is a common problem as the OP here also have the same problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781045
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1700775
I only flashed ICS when Jim confirmed that it was possible to revert back to 2..3.5
I think there is a problem in reverting back to 2.3.5 once applied ICS update and people should be aware of that.
Everyone should stop flashing ICS leaks otherwise they might end up bricking their phone forever.
100% same to me.
Up to ICS ok, back to Fxz with RSD and stuck at 5/19 reboot-bootloader step, I disconnected cable and phone black forever.
A lot of people they failed when flash with RSD but no problem, just take battery out and return, boot again to fastboot to re-flash. I think wrong file in Fxz not makes this problem, main cause I still don't know ! Maybe we are unlucky man ?
FXZ is not wrong one as I did used it when I had to flash back to stock from lithium Rom last week. I think phone is dead because it is not even booting into fastboot.. I've tried even booting to our stock recovery by pressing 3 buttons but no luck so far.
Its just very bad few hours back I was running ICS and now my phone is not even booting up.
OMG man!! I should have make a thread about this yesterday, but maybe nobody would of paid attention. I didn't really want this to happen to anyone, when flashing from 4.0.4 back to 2.3.5 it will get stuck at 5/20, something like that saying "rebooting loader". Now my phone with a blackscreen is getting hot when I insert the battery and when I plug it without a battery into my laptop or wallcharger and I dont have warranty. I call it white LED of death, when I plug it in to my laptop without a battery hehe , so I guess i'll be paying maybe 200$ dollar for it to be repaired, well if they repair it though, they charge so much here.. But i'm still trying to look what I can do, before I take it to a repair shop.
I heard about this problem when leak ICS for China/HK market 1 month ago, from xda man, and Jim he warned everybody here take care when coming back GB from ICS leak should make your phone bricked.
Now ATT ICS leak was released and all trusted Devs here confirmed that we can turn back to GB without problem, so I thought that it was safe to do with. Next day Jim posted new thread with new patch file. So sad ... I'm too late, we're too late ...

So this is the point that I'm very confused, I think that even failed flashing phone still powered on normally : wrong boot.img --> just jamed at boot logo, wrong bootloader --> screen turn on and shows errors; need to be flashed again by RSD or script. Some man here even not flashed anything, just root then reboot and phone dead without any reason.

I just talked to a Motorola service person he was saying in some rare cases a inbuilt ROM(read only memory) chip which stores bootloader files gets corrupted and in that case it might not even be possible to boot into fastboot.
I don't know how far he is right but one ting we are sure that our hardware was perfectly ok before flashing FXZ.
For me I even made sure that my battery was fully charged before starting FXZ.

Did anyone upgrade RSDlite to 5.7 before trying this by any chace?

Also, this could be something that was introduced to later model phones. My a2 was able to fxz back, but it ws made in SEPT 2011. Just another thought.

I did not. It is 5.6. That may be the reason. I got my A2 from att in Nov 2011, so I guess it is the same earlier version, right?

[Q] maybe i brick my phone

i have a motorola atrix 2 at&t(MB865).my phone was 2.3.6
1. I try to flash this firmware 5.5.1-EDEM-28-37-MEARET_cfc.xml.zip from this site http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/list.php with rsd.at 7/20 rsd was writting fail.i tried again with same result.after this my phone had problem with boot.the only method for boot was "vol down"+"vol up"+"power" and after i was pressing "Normal powerup".after all these my phone booted normal and worked normal.
2.after i flashed the Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.zip (ics) from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779968 and my phone was working normal but with the same problem with the boot.
3.after i tried to use this utillity http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1805975 .this process had some failure and after this my phone is unable to boot.
with "vol down"+"vol up"+"power" i can choose normal power up, but phone stucks at boot image.in addition i can choose recovery and phone boots at recovery mode.i choose to update from sd with this file Blur_Version.55.13.25.MB865.ATT.en.US.zip but my phone writes that its unable to flash this.
4.after i try to flash InlineFlashing_edison_5.5.175.16_cfc_p3_APBP_CID28 5.zip with rsd.the rsd wrote fail at 3/20 in addition i use the replace.zip with the same result.
5.after i try again the 3rd step with same results.
can anyone help me?
This whole mess started when you tried to flash MEARET firmware on your AT&T phone. NEVER mix firmware!
And trying recovery at this point is not going to work, as the ICS zip is just a large patch file for 2.3.6. And since it failed on the fxz, a portion of your system is missing so ICS won't install. You need to fxz back.
What step is the script falling at? A screenshot would be helpful.
And for the future, please post questions in the Q&A form.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium

sorry.please move this thread at q&a

But we need to know where it's failing at.

Well I hate to tell you man. But you are soft bricked until we find an fxz for ICS.
Recovery and cdrom are failing because cdt.bin isn't flashing. And we haven't found a fix for this yet.
Although the strange thing is that this shouldn't be happening on the first leak... but it is...
So you're bricked mate.

ok, i will wait.
thanks.
but please explain to me.i had a motorola a1200 and a siemens sx1.when i flashed a firmware, all the flash memory erased and new data wrote at flash.if i had bootloader, all was fine.the only method to brick a phone was to replace the battery when flash the bootloader(or flash false bootloader).
at A2, why when i write a new bootloader and new mbr(and partition table?) is necessary to flash the same or newer edition of firmware?this is because bootloader is locked?
i thought when i flash a new firmware, all the flash memory erased and writes new data(at the begining the bootloader, after mbr with partition table, after the image(i think this is the kernel of linux) and all other the data)

Whiteboi, thanks for your consideration of others but PLEASE, research before you try to help others. For one thing, he is on an MB865 AT&T phone and therefore MUST download the firmware for an AT&T phone. The international versions of the A2 are completely different, including radio, WiFi and the like. NEVER mix firmwares.
Also, he already flashed international firmware which is what got him into this predicament in the first place. He also installed the OTA update for ICS for which there is NO GOING BACK. Read the threads I gave him and educate yourself man.
I applaud you generosity, but if he wasn't already bricked, your advice would have surely/quite possibly bricked him. Be careful man.

Yeah man, if you OTA'd to ICS then I can almost guarantee it will fail at step 3 of the flash process which is the cdt.bin. If you are using the script it will also fail on the recovery portion and the cdrom portion. These are both because of the cdt.bin As of right now, we have no fix for this. Once again, this is the reason we are recommending people to ONLY use the first leak, and not OTA to ANYTHING unless it's 2.3.6 GB. Once again, reference the links I sent you.
You're bricked sir.
Until we find an ICS fxz. Which might be A LONG TIME.
Time to get a replacement/new phone.
Fall of Enosis said:
Yeah man, if you OTA'd to ICS then I can almost guarantee it will fail at step 3 of the flash process which is the cdt.bin. If you are using the script it will also fail on the recovery portion and the cdrom portion. These are both because of the cdt.bin As of right now, we have no fix for this. Once again, this is the reason we are recommending people to ONLY use the first leak, and not OTA to ANYTHING unless it's 2.3.6 GB. Once again, reference the links I sent you.

[Q] Hard Bricked? Don't see how....

Ladies and Gents,
I made sure I chose the correct RUU based on my CID (CWS__001)
I relocked my phone and attempted to install "RUU_EVITA_UL_JB_45_S_Cingular_US_3.18.502.6_Radio_ 0.24p.32.09.06_10.130.32.34_release_signed.exe". After the RUU finished my phone seems to be hard bricked.
Won't Boot.
No power lights.
I knew this could happen when flashing an international version. AFTER getting owned I also found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181929. Which was blatantly in the beginning of the forum. Has anyone found a fix for this issue, or is my only option JTAG repair?
Thanks,
Ryan

You could take your phone back and tell them it won't boot etc.
If you can't get it to boot neither can they, so no-one will know it's been unlocked/rooted.
Some people will say this is fraudulent, but hey, if you can live with yourself who cares what anyone else thinks?
Pft I returned mine to Telus when the same thing happened to me. The way I see it, it was HTC's RUU that bricked my phone, not me. Like you, I did not have supercid and was S-ON.
You could try the unbrick Evita thread. If you make it past step 3 you can save your phone.
You'll need to boot to Linux.

I bricked my phone trying to install elementalx and phone wouldn't boot at all and no lights. sent it in for jtag and they told me emmc controller was unresponsive and sent it back to me. looks like I may have to trash the phone... or make a few bucks on ebay.

Did they refund you? I was going to send it into mobiletechvideos for JTAG. I don't see the phones selling for more than 100$ on ebay.

they did refund. minus the cost of shipping and something else, however. it was worth a try though... All I know though is I will never touch an elemental kernel again... not worth it that's for sure...

Just curious about your situation. Did the kernel flash successfully and then just not boot? What ROM were you flashing it over? Tons of people, myself included, have flashed that kernel without issue so I'm interested in what exactly happened.

Sure, I too have used their kernels and have never had an issue until this time. So I started to install the kernel and it froze at I believe 60%? Then it sat... It said the flash could take awhile so to just wait so I did... For 2 hours. I knew something wasn't right because no elemental flash has taken my phone longer than a few minutes before this one so without thinking i'd hurt anything I held the buttons to hard power off the phone. After it shut off it's been completely dead since. No charge lights, no sign of any life at all other then the QHSUSB_DLOAD under device manager when plugged into my PC. the rom that I had flashed was the latest cleanrom. super bummed but i'll get over it. the worst part about this was I had pics of my kids that I had not backed up that are now lost.

That does suck about the pictures. That would upset me more than the phone as well. I went and looked at the thread after I saw your post and saw a couple of other bricks aside from yours in the last couple of hundred posts. Very unfortunate that flashing a kernel bricked it. I try to stay away from anything that uses the Aroma Installer unless there are no other options, not saying that was the problem, but I've had numerous issues with it previously. After seeing multiple bricks from a basic kernel flash I'm going to definitely be more cautious about what I flash from now on. I'd be totally screwed if I bricked this phone. Anyway, hope you end up with something better out of this, like the HTC One.

Funny thing about the One... I was thinking about getting it but after this issue I will never look at another phone that doesn't have a removable sd card...
I think a key thing to note here is that you are flashing software that has been altered by someone you don't know and you can never be sure that things will work out. There's huge risks associated with rooting/unlocking your phone. If there wasn't HTC would warrant your phone regardless of what you do.
If you don't have an answer to the question "What will I do when I brick my phone?" don't root. Whenever modding anything, consoles, phones, set top boxes, I always assume that I will render it unusable. If that doesn't sit well with me, I don't modify it. That should be the general rule of thumb to follow.

[Q] bricked and terrified 4.3

okay i upgraded to 4.3 OTA and tried to revert back and soft bricked my phone. I still have access to download mode and the stock recovery. I know now that i can not revert but is there any way of getting it back to 4.3 so i can have a phone again?
thanks for the future help.
This is similar what happened to me. I have never done anything with my phone as far as rooting and I tried reverting to stock 4.1.2. In Odin I kept getting the "Nand Start! Fail (Auth)" because of the locked bootloader I guess. I flashed some other firmware that was unofficial with the locked bootloader and now I get the "unauthorized software detected" and I cant do anything but enter Odin download mode. What should I do?
that is exactly what is happing to me. same error and all.
Once you took the OTA 4.3 you got locked in. No way of going back.

I dont want to go back just get rid of the soft brick so i can use it
im having the same problem and need to get it fixed please help anyone???!!!! im leaving for florida in two days and have nothing else. HELP!!!!
If you took the OTA and tried to flash 4.1.2 Odin or unlock bootloader you are Hard bricked , no method or recovering it yet.
If you have stock recovery and download mode , only hope is wait for 4.3 .tar file
Theres no custom recovery I can flash and flash some other software or something?

Nope , once you take 4.3 OTA you done , no flashing anything. And once you try to flash recovery or revert to older software you are bricked.
Sorry to be the bear of bad news.
There is a full thread of why and how so many devices have been bricked

I got the "unauthorised software detected" on my phone like 3 days ago from messing up on a recovery and all I did was go into the Verizon store and said idk what happened and they called technical support and they asked me if I flashed software on my phone and I just said "no, I just plugged it into my laptop and it did this" so they said they will just send me a new sgs3 and I just got it today.
Pretty simple.
And I don't have insurance .
Hit thanks if I helped

Funny thing is Verizon can tell if phone was hacked with, and can choose to add the cost of phone to your bill so this method is not highly recommended.

Not to mention it is basically fraud, and is the main reason Verizon decided to start locking down phones in the first place.
I understand everyone is taking risks when flashing custom, and flashes can go wrong even when you do everything right, but there is VERY little chance of bricking your phone if you take your time and do a bit of research before you hit any buttons. And if you do manage to brick your phone, man up and pay for a new phone or pay for it to be fixed. Otherwise stop treating your $600 piece of technology like a toy.

The first time I ever rooted, I was worried about bricking. So i read everything I could find relevant.
Why in the world anyone would flash without reading is beyond me. Every single thread in Verizon Galaxy S3 at least mentions, if not totally devoted, to how bad 4.3 is and if you flash something on it you will brick.
I just don't get it.
Sent from my Last Ever Samsung Device.
If you do a battery pull and start back up in download mode (might take a couple of times to get it to work) then use the Verizon software upgrade assistant it should fix it but you will be stuck with 4.3. Worked for me
