The Google Now for ICS Project -THREAD II- [UPDATE 8/5][APKs AND ZIPs] - Android Apps and Games

***THIS DISCUSSION IS ONLY FOR ANDROID 4.0 ICE CREAM SANDWICH! THESE APPS ONLY WORKS IN ANDROID 4.0! DON'T TRY THESE ON OTHER VERSIONS!***
So, first and foremost, Not I, or anyone else is responsible to any damage you do to your device. You are renaming/modifying system files so if you screw it up you are RESPONSIBLE, NOT US. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. Follow the instructions in this post and you should be fine.
BELOW YOU HAVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMv7 AND ARMv6 SEPARATELY, BECAUSE ARMv6 HAS ONLY A WORKAROUND FOR VOICE! SOME USERS SAID THAT ON THEIR ARMv6 DEVICES, VERSION FOR ARMv7 WORKS, SO YOU COULD GIVE IT A TRY, IF YOU ARE ON ARMv6!!!
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMv7 DEVICES (I repeat, you could give it a try if you're on ARMv6)
For ARMv7, there are some APKs and some flashable ZIPs. So I will give some information for everyone!
APKs for Google now: ATTENTION>>ALL O THESE APKs SHOULD BE USED WITH OTHER FILES. YOU HAVE TO USE THESE INSTRUCTIONS<<
• Download LennoxPackage.zip from http://www.mediafire.com/?8lv1h2879q925x1 It is not a flashable ZIP!!! Do not flash this in recovery!!!
• Extract all 3 folders from LennoxPackage.zip to a new folder on your computer
• Then download and replace the Velvet file in the app folder of your new folder with one of the following Velvet.apks. The Velvet.apk from Zip don't working!!!
• Move the folder you've created (with 3 subfolders) to your SD Card
• On your phone, in /system/app/, rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk to GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk.bak using Root Explorer (or something similar)
• In the folder you placed on your SD - you'll need to move everything from the /app/ folder to /system/app/, and set permissions to RW/R/R for each of the 3 .apks
• copy the files from the lib folder on your SD, and paste to system/lib (note, a couple of these already exist. Before copying these files go through /system/lib/ and rename any existing files to include .bak, then copy/paste new files. If you don't do this it will paste them with '- copy' as part of the file name). Change permissions of these New files to rw/r/r
• rename the existing "config" folder in /system/usr/srec/ on your phone to "config.bak", then just paste "config" and "en-US" from the srec folder on your SD to /system/usr/srec/. Some, also changed permissions on config and en-US to RWX/RX/RX
• Reboot and enjoy. (of course, your System partition should be mounted R/W -read/write - to move files in it)
And now, the APKs :laugh: >>
1. The no double take APK. The most of these APKs, shows Google Now Cards twice, one after another. This problem is solved in this APK, but it has another problem>>sometimes, you have to move your fingers on the screen for showing up the Cards<< Here, the auto-launch function should work!!!
Here is the link>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1240357&d=1344043690 !!! Enjoy it! :good:
2. The one with no double take and no blank screen. This one eliminates the double take problem and the problem with white screen when you don't see Cards and you have to move your fingers on the screen. But it has another problem>>it eliminates auto-launch function because it refresh automatically the screen for showing up the Cards and there is no transition animation (for those that don't know, auto-launch function is that function that you can see when you say something like>>Navigate to ...<<A blue bar shows up and it loads and automatically does that action, in this case, opens the Google Maps Navigation and schedules your navigation details)
Here is the link>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1242492&d=1344147549 !!!
3. The first voice-functional version. This one has double take but it should't have blank screen problem. It sometimes has auto-launch, sometimes not, from what I heard from users.
Here is the link>> http://www.mediafire.com/?ij9tsfg5jitm8ep !!!
4. A new version from mikeyxda. This should resolve the double take problem, auto-lauch and white screen, but it has some problems with the showing up of the cards on some phones, as I saw at you, guys.
Here is the link>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1243199&d=1344183455 !!!
5. A new APK from mikeyxda. Oh man, you are completely dedicated! I like that!!! Keep it on this way!
This APK should resolve:
1. No double takes
2. Web results display properly: no font stretch or invisible results
3. Action countdown fully functional
4. "Refresh" is always available via a press of the Menu button from the cards view
Here is the download link>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1243421&d=1344190796
More information here>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29824319&postcount=8.
The choice is yours!!! You will choose the APK that is working for you!!!
**Removed per original authors request*** ~TRM
And we are done with ARMv7 devices!!! :good: Oh, man, this will be big :laugh: !!!
TIP FOR ARMv7 DEVICES>>>***LONG PRESS ON MICROPHONE BUTTON FROM GOOGLE NOW, NOT JUST A SIMPLE PRESS, THIS WILL HELP YOU SO MUCH TO AVOID PROBLEMS !!!***<<<
INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMv6 DEVICES (of course, if you have an ARMv7 device and methods for ARMv7 didn't work for you, you could use this, give it a try!!! This should work on almost every device with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwitch!!!)
These are the current instructions:
1. Rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in system/app to GoogleQuickSearchBox.bak
2. Rename the "Velvet-Thes0o-5.apk" that you downloaded ( http://www.mediafire.com/?hbtjvbzwbbaf3yj ) to: "GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk"
3. Place the renamed .apk in the system/app folder and set the permissions to rw-r-r
4. Reboot and enjoy!
OR
1. Rename GoogleQuickSearchBox.apk in system/app to GoogleQuickSearchBox.bak
2. Try to install the downloaded .apk off your sd just like any other .apk
OR
1. Flash this .zip through recovery -- AOSP ONLY
Here is the link>> http://goo.gl/svDEF !!!
To make Voice Action work (this is just a workaround for ARMv6 devices -if is needed, I repeat, for ARMv7 devices- that will listen to you, but it doesn't give you voice responses, just repeats what you said) you have to use these instructions:
1. Download the "Voice Search for Google Now!" app from here>> https://dl.dropbox.com/u/11388416/GoogleNowVoiceSearch.apk !!! and install it!
2. Either open up the app, hold down search or tap on the dedicated widget that comes with the app to launch the voice search
3. The app will use ICS's voice-to-text engine to get your answer, and then enters it into the Google Now app. All you have to do is hit enter and then congrats, you've got working voice search!
So, to get it working, open Voice Search for Google Now (after you installed Google Now with above instructions for ARMv6 devices), click that microphone button, say what you want, the app will open Google Now, you will see that what you said is written in Google Now, press Enter on Keyboard, and you will see the result.
***>>>NOTE FOR ARMv6 VERSION: THE VERSION FOR ARMv6, DOESN'T VOICE-RESPOND TO YOU, IT SHOWS UP RESULT, BUT IT DOESN'T READ WHAT IS WRITTEN IN RESULT, IT JUST REPEATS WHAT YOU SAID!!! THE VERSION FOR ARMv6 HAS DOUBLE TAKE!!! YOU MUST HAVE INSTALLED A PREVIOUS WORKING VOICE SEARCH, LIKE THE ONE FROM GINGERBREAD OR HONEYCOMB, TO HAVE THIS THING WORKING. YOU COULD DOWNLOAD VOICE SEARCH VERSION 2.1.4 FROM HERE>> http://www.mediafire.com/?r9b47dcirtt8m98 <<<***
INFORMATION!!!>>>
FIRST>>THANK YOU very much to all the kind people who are providing the modded .apks and .zips for us. I can't account for every single person but thank you all for helping with the effort.
Second, I will try to update this post as frequently as possible, but its so difficult to keep up with you, guys :laugh: !!! Any 'info dumps' in PM's would be appreciated.
For those of you who are complaining of no cards showing up:
You Have to understand that Google Now works by gathering information about where you are, what you search for OVER TIME. You simply can not expect it to have all of the information you want in a few minutes after you installed it, wait for it a few days, just use the Google search like you would usually and it will start to fill in!
Devices this will NOT work on:
-Devices that are running anything before Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
-Devices not running an AOSP ROM (in most cases, try anyway and report back)
-iOS Devices (Suckas!)
Secondary voice widget:
If your ROM doesn't support a persistent search widget, this will allow you to still have a search widget that also ties to Voice Search for Google Now app
(and its color customizable for you, themers out there).

Ugh. At the risk of people think I'm "bombing" these threads with Velvet.apk versions, I have one more version today. Every time I think I'm done, someone mentions another path or "case" where I'm able to make a correction/improvement. The one attached here is hopefully my last for today and it corrects the fact that the "Refresh" menu option is not available if you go straight to the Google Now cards without first doing a search. Now "Refresh" is always available via "Menu", so to sum this version up, it does the following:
(1) No double takes
(2) Web results display properly: no font stretch or invisible results
(3) Action countdown fully functional
(4) "Refresh" is always available via a press of the Menu button from the cards view
Tips:
Searching from cards view: results are heard but don't display
If you use the small mic from the cards view window, your search will work but the results are not displayed. Simply press "Menu", "Refresh" to display them.
Searching from cards view: getting back to the red mic search window
If you are on the cards view and you want to get back to "the big red mic", just press on the small little mic on the cards view window and immediately after, use "Menu", "Refresh" while that mic is still active and it'll refresh the mic to the main/red search mic and you're back in business. "Menu", "Refresh" refreshes whatever action is currently going on so if you do a "Menu", "Refresh" while the mic is listening, it'll refresh the mic to the red mic and you'll be back on the search window.

To show cards have to be language default english in settings?

I don't think you can install the apk like a regular app. You can use adb to push the file out to your phone or use root manager to replace the velvet.apk in system/app and change the permissions.

Nice thread, hopefully someone would look into getting this fully functional on ARMv6 devices. It works somewhat but very buggy. I think it has something to do with display

We need a new video the one on there is old, new thread, new everything lol
I'm gonna try to make one

Has anyone had any (consistent) luck with sports cards? Right now I only have one card: for the Tampa Bay Rays. If I reboot the phone, sometimes (maybe 1 out of 10 times) I'll get the little baseball in the notifications and it'll notify me about game results after it's over. But... I never get a notification that the game has started. Never get updates when the score changes during the games. Is this a known limitation of the ICS port? I have the settings checked to "low priority" so I should be getting them consistently but I've gotten maybe one out of a dozen and... only when I reboot. For now, I've just turned the main on/off switch for Google Now to "Off" because all it does is drain my battery and never gives me any reliable notifications anyway. Just wondering if this is a known issue. I tried a search but only found a few people complaining that they don't work at all. I can't find any reference to them only working intermittently (rarely).
I said "McDonalds" into it once and it told me probably 3 times within an hour what the traffic was like to the nearest McDonalds. But I can't get it to give reliable sports cards.

The only issue I have is the wording, but if you get it right it works flawless.
If you ask "when do the rangers play again" you will not get a card, but if you ask "when does the rangers play again" you get a card as you can see here:

Once I got sports cards to start working they seem to be getting more reliable as I use them. Be sure to do a ton of voice searches for your team right off the bat so it will know to prioritize them. My problem is actually with the auto weather notification, I swiped it away about 4 days ago and its never come back to my notification bar.. It's there in the cards section, but never the notifiy bar.
As far as a new video, I'd like to check out mikeys new apk, then if I get time maybe I can post one. if someone wants to beat me to it by all means go ahead.
One more thing.. mikey I wouldn't give up on using it quite yet, as you may have read- it really does seem to get better the more you use it and travel around town with it.. The first couple days I had it installed I was pretty much like.. is this it??

I'm not having any trouble there. Things you ask it are fine. The things it should be offering up to you automatically (without you having to ask) is where it falls flat. If I have a card for the Tampa Bay Rays, my understanding is that it should automatically alert you when the game is about to begin via notifications and also send notifications automatically during the game when the score changes. That just doesn't work.

Starfox 64 demo:
More information will be added as it becomes available.
Quick walkthrough on how to replace the stock emulators on the S7100.
Disclaimer as usual: everything here is at your OWN RISK.
I'll be using Gensoid as an example, as this emulator refused to launch for me out of the box.
Requirements:
Rooted S7100.
File explorer with root permissions.
Gensoid replacement.
1) Once your device is rooted, you'll need to grab a file explorer. The explorer I use is ES File Explorer.
2) Download Gensoid. For this example, place this on the root of your SD card. As long as you can find this file in ES Explorer, it doesn't really matter where you put it.
Instructions:
Launch ES File Explorer, press the menu button and change the following options:
Change Home Directory to /
Check Root Explorer to enabled
Check Mount File System to enabled
Back out of the settings and navigate to the following directory:
/system/app
Long press on Gnes4droid.apk and rename it to Gnes4droid.apkbak
Navigate to /system/libs/ and rename the folder Gnes4droid to Gnes4droidbak
Now power off the S7100 and power it back up again, if you do not power off installation in the next step will fail.
Launch ES File Explorer again and find the APK for Gensoid that you downloaded previously and press it. It should now offer to install the application, follow the on screen steps and you should have successfully replaced the preloaded version of Gensoid.
Any games you have should still autmoatically launch from the Game Center icons and the MD lists, but adds the advantage of having a launcher icon for the emulator itself, should you wish to customise your device with another launcher.
This should work for any preloaded emulator that you wish to replace with a previous version. Do NOT delete the other emulators just incase you want to revert.
If you have any issues, you can always undo the renaming operations above.
I ordered one of these things a few weeks ago, and finally got it in the mail, but it doesn't boot; it sits at a blank white screen. Any thoughts?

Tried booting into recovery and loading factory defaults? I read about someone who had a similar issue.
Which website did you buy it from?
If factory defaults don't work you could also try downloading f/w above and reloading it.
To get into recovery (courtesy of Jutleys via apad forum):
Press and hold the Menu button, keep the Menu button pressed and now press the Power on button. The "upgrading please wait" message will be displayed.The menu will be displayed. Use the Volume + and - buttons to navigate the menu options.From the menu you can perform the following functions:Wipe data/factory reset.Yes-delete all user data.Wipe cache partition.Wipe media storage partition.Apply SD-card update.zip.
From the menu choose "Apply SD-card update.zip" select the option using the Back button. Wait while the tablet reflashes. Ensure the battery is fully charged or the power cable is connected before starting the reflash process. After the reflash is complete. Press the Back button to reboot the tablet.
I just ordered one of these. Sounds perfect since I am delevoping games for Android, and this is a mix of everything Android it seems.
I got just about all Emulators for Android, so I hope to test how well they will work on this. Amiga, C64, almost all Segas, most Nintendo, DosBox and Playstation 1. I just worry that it might be too low quality and won't work at all.

When u say u got rid of the launcher, can u completely remove it or just use adw instead?
Reason bring is I installed go launcher but the original still resides.
Also do u know how to get rid if the Chinese market and crap? I replaced some default emulators with new versions by renaming originals in system/app folder but can't see anything fire the Chinese stuff.
I did not completely remove it but I beleive you can use titanium backup, I used it to remove all the Chinese apps and everything else I didn't need

Wouldn't be wise to remove their launcher entirely. If you use an alternative launcher though, you can set it as the default launcher which effectively does the same thing anyway.
Settings > applications > all > launcher > clear defaults on "Launch by default".
Next time you press HOME, it will ask you which app to use as your default launcher, set it to Go Launcher and it'll be the default launcher from boot.
To reverse this if you have any issues, repeat the steps above and select Go Launcher to clear defaults, instead of launcher.

Does anyone know if this device supports Bluetooth? I read on another forum that there is a firmware upgrade for the resistive screen model that has Bluetooth in the caption. If the device does have Bluetooth, does this mean it's only in the resistive screen model? Maybe only later releases of the device received the Bluetooth capability (resistive and capacitive)? Thanks for any information.

There seems to be a few different models out there and seemingly one of them has bluetooth. I'm not aware of where this model is being sold though, as almost nobody seems to have a bluetooth enabled model.
My capacitive model doesn't have bluetooth and looking at the restive models other users have, theirs don't have it either.
Fairly sure this isn't a stock upgrade for later releases though, rather another SKU.

Thanks Blokenfeffer for the information.
One thing I find that is strange though. The following sites list that it does have Bluetooth. Sorry I could not link to the entire URL. The forum has yet to give me the privilege to do so.

lettouch.com
r4shop.co.uk
Do you think that this is an error on their part? They have had this same information on their site since the launch of the device.

It's possibly an error, or they could have the bluetooth model. Mine has bluetooth sharing running in the background, but there's no bluetooth hardware in the machine that I'm aware of.
There are definitely 3 different firmware revisions on the JXD site though, including bluetooth and none bluetooth versions.

Thanks again, blokenfeffer. That answers my question to why I saw a picture on JXD's website with the Bluetooth symbol running in the notification bar. It must have just been running in the software, yet it does not have the actual hardware to support it. I guess I'll just have to wait and see if the new units coming out have Bluetooth or not.
Mine definitely does not have bluetooth. Interestingly, it thinks it has GPS, but even after spending 10 very cold minutes outside with the device pointed at the sky, I could not get a single satellite signal. So I suspect that radio is not present either.
Lots of tinkering!
I have been following this thread since its introduction and appreciate all the tips and tricks that have been very helpful. I thought I would add my findings to the thread.
I finally got current location working in the browser and on wifi.
After countless try's I have found a reliable networklocation.apk that works..
- 1 First you must be rooted
- 2 In order to get it to work google search tiadroid6.1 and its the first link that pops up.
- 3 Extract the file networklocation.apk and using (es file explorer or similiar app) and add it to your /system/apps folder
- 4 shutdown and reboot your device
Volia! enjoy!
Things I have currently done
- Rooted/Market via visionary
- Changed boot screen
- ICS Keyboard (must have)
- Removed Badiu and all the factory launcher and junk (makes this thing pretty snappy)
- Netflix works great
- Skype works but hangs at times
Problems I'm currently working
- factory camera app is really screwy I downloaded HDR app from the market and it appears to work fine so I'm hoping its software
When I load it I sit at a blank screen regardless of which camera I have selected. Sometimes I can get it to work by going to video and clicking the mms video option.
- GTA III boots and loads just fine plays the entire movie and will sometimes even let you play for a minute or two then crashes with an android process error
I *had* Bluetooth on mine untill I dared to update it with one of the firmware on JXD's website
UPDATE:
Fixed my camera problem and with chainfire 3D most games work really well on this thing. For those that have sporadic camera issues make sure that you don't have the screen locked and that the screen rotates.
I'm crossing my fingers to get gingerbread on this device so that we can use OnLive gaming.
Also I have been messing with power profiles and am seeing better battery life in the 4+ hr range.
The charger that came with it died so I'm in the process of building another one. So more to come once I can charge this thing!

Quick question about your bluetooth. Did you actually have it working? If so have you taken apart to get the BT chip info by chance to try and recover that functionality?

Well, I could turn it on & off, it seemed to be responding properly, was going to test some bluetooth gadgets after the firmware upgrade but alas...
I haven't taken the thing apart yet, I'm mailing back & forth with JXD at the moment to see if they can help, if that fails though I probably will take it apart.

CWM recovery | Custom Clean ROM | Tweaks for Android watch phone Z1 (MT6516)

Z1 (brand unknown) is wrist watch phone with Android OS. It was first released in 4/2012 and it is Android 2.2.1. It has WiFi, AGPS, GSM/EDGE, 2 MP camera, mic, speaker, loudspeaker, capacitive touchscreen, display of 320x240, SDHC & SIM card slots etc.
As most Chinese phones it has SoC from MediaTek, MT6516 (armv5).
See my Czech review for photos: http://hodinky.blog.mobilmania.cz/2012/06/z1-hodinko-telefon-s-androidem/
Tweaks/tips for stock ROM (2.2.1)
Market/Google Play is missing in stock rom but it cam be added if you follow instructions on the page: http://www.ibuygou.com/p-z1_smart_android_2_2_watch_phone_gps_wifi_bluetooth_html-3638-usd.html (included in Clean ROM)
Default DPI is 120 however most controls are too small. Change it to 160 which will make all icons sharp. (included in Clean ROM)
Typing on tiny QWERTY soft keyboard is a pain, Flit Keyboard makes entering text much easier. (included in Clean ROM)
To enter engineering mode, dial *#*#8787#*#*
ADWLauncher EX works even better if you (see):
Disable all animations including scrolling homescreen
Disable dockbar and use swipe up instead (included in Clean ROM)
4x3 icon layout for home screen and 5x2 for drawer (included in Clean ROM)
Use something like Extended controls for toggles
Use No Lock if you don't need swipe to unlock feature.
Remove alternative Chinese markets and Chinese network account/sync providers from /system/app (included in Clean ROM)
Creating flashable dump
Use MT6516 BackUpTool for dumping your stock rom.
Use MTK_Rom_Studio_1.0.0a for converting dump into flashable format.
Flashing
Basically you need the driver: "MT6516_YuSu_USB_VCOM.inf" and flashing tool: "SP Flash Tool v1.1110". All tools can be found on the internet when searching for "MT6516 flash tools". The only necessary tools reuploaded can be found also here. (I'm not sure about the legality of these tools though.)
You have to use 32 bit Windows (I only tried XP in both VirtualBox and VMware but it could work with 32 bit Vista or 7).
Power off the watch, connect it directly to PC (no USB hub or extention cable) - new device will connect for few seconds - use it to install the driver. Unplug watch. (You may retry that few times because the watch disconnect within few seconds) Open flashing tool and select files to flash (I would recommend not to flash anything other than boot/recovery/system/data/logo), hit start and quickly connect the watch - flashing will start automatically.
Recovery
First build of ClockworkMod 5.0.2.8 seems to be working however all its features were not tested yet!
Recovery can be flashed with "SP Flash Tool" (use provided scatter file).
Rebooting to recovery from launched Android using "reboot recovery" works but I wasn't able to find working button shortcut to launch recovery directly from cold start. Please help me if you find a way!
Custom Clean ROM based on stock 2.2.1
Features
Removed alternative Chinese markets and Chinese (social) network accounts
Integration of Google apps (sync, Google Play, setup wizard etc)
DPI changed to 160 which makes the watch easier to control and the icons sharper
Preconfigured ADW Launcher, Flit keyboard
Includes root with Superuser, Busybox binaries
Minor clean-ups
So far this ROM doesn't include anything power user from XDA wouldn't be able to customize but this ROM is afford to save other users time with experiments.
Important notes:
Backing up your current ROM + data is highly recommended (use the above listed MT6516 BackUpTool)
The seller says you shouldn't do factory reset because of IMEI lost - I can't confirmed that - IMEI is kept even during factory resets so it doesn't seem to be stored in user data partition. BUT backup your current ROM anyway cause I might be wrong.
Clean ROM notes:
The first boot is slow. After the first boot, I recommend not touching the watch for 5-10 minutes because dalvik cache is rebuilding in the background and the setup wizard may lag a lot.
The default ADW launcher is configured to not have app drawer button - swipe up to open drawer
Known issue (to be fixed later): Because of DPI change - Bottom row of button in Dialer is smaller, however all buttons can be pressed
Known issue (to be fixed later): Because of DPI change - Superuser (root) confirmation dialog buttons aren't readable however the buttons are partly visible and can be pressed (press bottom left button to allow root acces)
Known issue (to be fixed later): Because of DPI change - There is small graphical glitch on the lock screen which however doesn't break anything
Flashing recovery is not needed at all. Just make sure you flash both partitions (it will erase all your data on the watch but not on SD). Follow instructions above on how to flash.

CM ROM
WIP, first build of CyanogenMod 7 (2.3.7) booted so I continue testing/evaluating. So far I only used stock kernel but I have source for MT6516 kernel.
Notes: WiFi chip - MediaTek MT5921 - no open source driver
Currently on hold.

Ive been thinking about buying the watch to use as a mp3 player, would you recomend it?

Yes, I'm plugging my website, but hey, it's relevant.
I've just reviewed this device at:
http://linuxslate.com/Review_Z1_Android-2.2-Watch.html
Everything in this thread has been helpful, I just wanted to add my 2 cents.
DPI at 160 looks great. Unfortunately many apps will not fit, including keyboard, phone, and superuser prompt. Either find alternate keyboard and set superuser to auto-grant, or switch back and forth between 120 and 160 as necessary.
I like No Lock, but I find the phone wake-locking all the time until I turned No Lock off. I also like the fact that the time is there in big letters on the lock screen. It's very suitable for its watch functionality.
I did a manual backup without rooting (No need for Z4 Root)
Download and unrar MT6516 BackUpTool, but do not install anything.
On the Linux/Mac box, open the gscript folder, and open back22.sh in editor, or viewer.
Connect the watch via USB, and connect via adb shell
Cut, paste and execute each line from the back22.sh file
up to and including the last dd command in the first section - in other words
Code:
.
.
.
.
dd if=/dev/mtd/mtd11 of=/sdcard/backup_/expdb.img
Obviously, you don't do the comment lines.
exit the shell
Code:
exit
do:
Code:
adb remount
Install yaffs2image:
Code:
adb push <your_path_on_PC_to>/Install/BackUp/yaffs_back_2.2/gen/mkyaffs2image /system/bin/mkyaffs2image
Code:
adb shell chmod 4777 /system/bin/mkyaffs2image
(Again, the above is a cut and paste from the script)
Code:
adb remount
(for safety)
Code:
adb shell
Then cut and paste the remaining 3 mkyaffs2img commands.
Then:
Code:
exit
Copy the backup_ folder on the SD car to someplace safe.
If you want, you can remove mkyaffsimg:
Code:
adb remount
Code:
adb shell rm /system/bin/mkyaffs2image
Code:
adb remount
It's definitely more steps, but it leaves the system technically un-touched, un-rooted, and even returnable if you should have to.
Some more useful apps.

It can be done, but the MotoActv might be better, because the motoactv has a headphone jack so you can use any headphones you want. On the Z1, you have to use bluetooth headphones or a bluetooth headphone adapter.
I just ordered one of these last week, should have arrived today ... glad to see this exists!
Other than configuration/display-size issues, does everything work, i.e. all hardware? I noticed you had a note about the Wifi driver not being open source, but I assume that more effects if you try the MT6516 kernel. Even if it's a closed binary, I assume you could still load it and use it though. I'm not expecting any leaps and bounds in the kernel department.
As for CWM, is any part of it executed at cold boot? If so, I imagine you'd need to implement some kind of timeout menu that could optionally enter recovery before booting the watch. This is similar to what was implemented on the Kindle Fire which also doesn't have a normal stock recovery mode.
I assume you're still evaluating CM7 so you're not ready to distribute it ... but I do hope to see more from you soon, especially a HOWTO and download links!
I spent many nights trying to make GSM or WiFi working. Except few tweaks I only got the modem to start but nothing more. I have no experience with porting of binary drivers and this device has so many of them. Radio/modem and kernel modules - there are no problems with them but there are just too many dependencies on proprietary libs even from standard android native binaries.
So I'm giving up. At least for now cause I just don't have enough knowledge.
I consider making custom rom based on stock Android but I don't know if there would be any demand. Proper integration of Google apps, Chinese apps/account providers removed, tweaked launcher/drawer settings, tweaked global dpi/dpi of apps that not fit...
To have at least something, I give you very simple app "Z1 Backlight Toggle" apk (attached in 1st post) which can turn off completely display backlight. (Needs root) I use it on my bike when I have navigation running all the time cause it indeed saves battery and backlight isn't needed at all under direct sunlight, the display is readable the same.

That's fine, I understand how frustrating these things can be. But still, can you post information about how to backup / restore the firmware and how to flash a custom ROM? I might try playing with it myself sometime and at least having the knowledge would enable further experimentation.

I have an idea ... if we can get the MTK6516 kernel to build and boot, that's one step. If we can then get Android 2.2 stock to build, and then compare it against an image of the Z1's file system, we should, in theory, be able to identify all the unique areas of the watch's Android setup. If we at least know how to build an identical watch Android from source we should be able to extend that into making Cyanogen Mod work ... or something else. I think it's worth a shot anyway!
Also for an identical kernel, there shouldn't be any need to "port" binary drivers ... ideally they're built-in or load as modules, same as any other drivers.
I consider making custom rom based on stock Android but I don't know if there would be any demand.

You're probably right there will be very limited demand. So I ask again, if you can at least post steps about reflashing the watch, I'll give it my best shot. I just want to be sure I can restore the watch after messing around with it. Which I'm guessing you were able to since you didn't claim any permanent damage. It seems it should be able to go into a factory restore mode which I hope will override any messed up systems.

It really is neat. Kind of limited, but really neat. I think if we can get any amount of control over the kernel and Android version, we can really extend the abilities of the watch. It just needs a chance...

In my opinion there's no problem with kernel, modules or libraries, we can just reuse them. The real issue I think is native android binaries such as wpa_supplicant or rild. We can either use (original) already built binaries or build new ones - but this is the problem... Original binaries depend on proprietary libraries so they "do something" important with devices. Newly build binaries just don't have that unknown functionality. Yes, reusing stock binaries might work for 2.2 but my only target so far was 2.3 since that would be real benefit for us.

That is exactly what needs to be done! If porting the binaries is not possible at the moment, why not go ahead with building with stock android, with proper google account and apps, and removing the chinese accounts.
Once you have tweaked launcher/drawer, tweaked dpi of apps that not fit etc done, it would be almost as good as running CM7. Any improvement would be a big improvement
I sincerely hope that you continue development, the demand for a stock ROM is sure to come as the device becomes more popular, as of now, there is nobody developing for Z1, that i know of.

GooPhone Y5/Thunderbird 4s

Hey everyone,
Recently purchased a thunderbird 4s and have had great joy rooting and flashing the phone with various ROMS from across various forums and youtube sites(mayiandjay).
I thought I would start this start this thread due to the lack of English information regarding this fantastic iphone 4s clone and ROM information around the globe. Most is in chinese along with a russian forum but there is little else in english.
I have flashed them all and this is a guide for English users to participate in and add feedback and hints/tips to various newer ROMS.
I have ascertained via china- phone forum russia (in russian) that goophone release newer ROM'S every month or so.
The latest ROM titled GOOPHONE-Y5-1001-F-002 is the best for this phone and includes importantly the proximity sensor re calibrator under settings/general/accessibility/display. Importantly, whenever you flash the ROM'S via clockwork recovery and boot into the ilauncher screen you must always recalibrate this proximity sensor otherwise when you take/make a call the phone goes blank screen and is basically stuffed.
I have tried many roms including:
- 0805(which was very very good my reference for me but lacked newer functionality including camera operation via lockscreen and many other newer functions),
- mayiandjay,(has bugs including proximity failure in display)
- tician and gstyle (also has the same bug as mayiandjay)
If you have bought a new thunderbird 4s (and yes the screen is much brighter exactly the same as iphone 4s i saw in apple store) then you must do the following to get it up to full potential but be **WARNED** there are risks attached with this including having to open up the unit requiring a pentalobe screwdriver and sliding the cover off to de-solder red/black battery terminal wires if your flash goes wrong. This is the only way to get back in to CWM if a flash goes wrong.
1. Follow the guide here -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729056 (thnx you mylove299 you are genius for posting that thread)
2. Once flashed from post 3 download the newest ROM for Y5 here --->http://www.mediafire.com/?mn2w39f5ocfdpxk and once downloaded use usb to transfer the zip to your root sd card
3. Now get into reboot recovery mode.
4. To do this turn off phone
5. Then hold power and - button together and wait to feel the vibration. Once felt quickly take your fingers off - button and power button.
6. You should now see bottom left corner of screen recovery mode
7. Follow the guide in chinese on how to flash your zip. There is a guide for CWM called IOS_recovery_2.0.1_(chinese).pdf and is available here: ---> http://www.dkmdesign.dk/?page_id=9
8. Basically, using this chinese-> english guide for CWM you follow this order a) clear the cache partition; b)clear data restore factory settings; c) apply zip from sd card; d) scroll one down and hit eneter you should be in root of your sd card where you put the zip before; e) apply update and that's it
9. Once the flash is done which take about 30 or so seconds the new ROM is now ready and all you have to do is go down to bottom hit back key until the start screen and you should be highlighting the first option in CWM and hit enter and bingo reboot
Once the reboot is done you will boot-up into the new rom. This new rom is fantastic gives you the camera option on lockscreen and also has a round home button which gives you quick access to 3G /wifi and other shortcuts. You can place this little icon anywhere on your homepage.
Once this is all done then you have to obtain g-apps from here: -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1729056 and Extract Go_app.zip then run installG_Apps.bat, G-app will be install then run install_App.bat to install other apps, your phone will reboot. (Thnx mylove299)
and then that's it your done you will see the new apps for play and other things on your homescreen which you can modify if in chinese just hold the icon with your finger until it starts shaking and then press the icon once and you should see options to change title/icon etc I basically changed the chinese titles to english.
In this new ROM the compass now work (0805 ROM had bugs) auto-rotate work also and functionality is awesome. There is also a nifty chinese icon program in this rom which monitors your 3G usage and i can explain how to set this up if you have a monthly allowance but I will leave that to later. Also, I have an iphonewallper.apk which i modified and I will explain how to port that across to system/app using root explorer and this way you can modify your homescreen wallpaper to newer images along with your home screen.
For now, that's it but do post/update it if you have bugs/issues or anything else to add. Remember this is the Thunderbird 4s and is exactly the same as goophone Y5 expect better screen hehehe . I will be hardware modifying the battery soon (thnx mayandjay for guide on youtube to iphone 4s 1430mah version) along with a future mod on the camera and will install an iphone 4s camera to see if it improves it which I think it will, cause the one in there now is very poor but ok)
Hope you enjoy this post and I thought I would give something back to all the hard work of programmers/engineers across the world.
:good:
Ok can add some further feedback...
* you need to set the screen to lcd density 326 to maximize the quality of imaging as this is a retina screen. To do this once you have installed google play go into market and download excellent free app called lcd resolution. Once installed set density to 326 exactly as this is correct density for this retina screen. You can also tick apply on reboot so you can it have it permanently done in the build.prop file.
*** May want to scratch the above** found 320 is the best and lock screen swipe was a little out of wack but this is now fixed with 320 dpi.
* You may want to uninstall an app which has a swirl arrow on it. This app installs a usage meter and also a dialer and sms app which is in chinese and confilcts with original apps. Definitely recommend to uninstall.
* You can add various apps via other ROM's go into system/apps of these zips copy apk files onto your sd card and install them via root explorer
Ok some further updates..
* Found a nifty tip... if you want flash on phone to work momentarily in darkness...hit the home button front screen will light up and hold either + or - button for a second or too and rear flash will light up...very kewl..
* I have also disabled the notifications pop up. I prefer to turn my Thunderbird 4s on and see on screen what I have missed. Previously with notifications on it interferes with various functionality of the phone.
* if your GPS is slow or does not work remove backcover, and re-solder the red and black battery wires to main-board. Also move these wires away from the main-board as this has helped me get a lock within 15sec of turning on my various gps app's.
* I have also installed adw launcher with apex ICS theme... between them I can launch the ICS theme and ilauncher(default) and people are amazed..
My intention is to go into Apple store and say I bought this and look no itunes work but everything else works..record on youtube and then upload heheheheh will be funny...
thx for your hints! Just one more question:
I can flash the rom, but when restarting it gives me two flickering lines on the bottom of the screen. I can load roms up to 0912. But even the modded rom from mayiandjay shows this behavior. Any idea?
the facebook app is not working for me. It just states "loading" on the main screen, also when loading profiles or certain pages. Notifications and messages work though...same for you?
thx for sharing your ideas,

Yes the flickering is quite normal and I did not see it on ROM 0805 goophone Y5 version.
It seems the mayiandjay rom and above have this weird flickering made worst when putting the phone into landscape mode. Seems to only do it with web-scrolling and youtube. I am thinking they don't use the hardware correctly....not sure..
Unless you mean something else completely different to what I described above?
I don't use the facebook app so can't really comment. I am curious though can someone post a link to goophone ROM versions all of them and the current release versions. That would be awesome..
Just an update ROM 1013 has been released for a while now.
Will be upgrading to it soon. I have found the links to the latest ROMS for goophone Y5/Thunderbird 4s.
Stay tuned
Thanks for your answer. The flickering starts for me right from the white apple logo at boot, even within recovery.Only one or two lines. They disappear when rolling back to 0912. What I did: I've taken 1013, unzipped and copied the system folder to the unzipped 0913. Then zipping again, et voilá - features from 1013 w/o flickering
Concerning facebook: I think that is due to missing AOSP browser, but I'm not sure. I was not able to install it via root explorer or even adb.

Interesting... thank You for your feedback..
I have discovered another issue that the SMS app sometimes the sms's will continue to beep unless I open the folder.
Seems to lag when it starts to get full....
Time to flash ROM and test your feedback ..
Ok trying your method brought back issues of no auto-rotate on screen same issue as in 0912 ROM.
Will now use 1013 ROM and provide feedback.
Update feedback..
1013 all working well. No issues to report auto rotate works and phone is much more faster/zippier.
For now 1013 is the latest and greatest...
The 1013 ROM has improved the following:
* Battery life is much improved
* reception is more stable
* voice quality on call is very clear and crisp
* audio quality via music player is outstanding even better than my samsung galaxy s
* Menu speed and free memory with ilauncher is much better now ( is zippier now than before)
* no more lag with SMS
* There is still some minor flicker but hardly noticeable and much much less than before with 1001 ROM
* Camera is improved colours are more natural and correct
* If anyone has issues with GPS you may need to resolder the red and black cables back to mainboard. Mine was poor only use 3 satellites when it can see 12. Now after resolder(careful it is very thin wire) the GPS gets lock in 15~20sec and I use 9/12 satellites.
The 1013 ROM is simply fantastic. ENjoy
Hi Guys,
i also own a goophone y5 since 2 days now and i am very interested to find a ROM thats imitates iphone as well as possibel.
i currently tried these roms:
- GOOPHONE-Y5-0711-f-001
- GOOPHONE-Y5-0815-01-GF-F-IL-002
- GOOPHONE-Y5-1001-F-002
- REX_V3
i found REX_V3 + (a sortet amount of) G_apps as the best combination of functionality, stability and look+feel. i'm close to start cooking my own rom, because all roms have an issues that are nogo! i'll post a review of these roms a soon as possible for you all here and will share my experience with them. meanwhile i'm trying to combine a rom out of them all that fullfills the following points:
- stability
- functionality
- look+feel (as close as possible to iphone)
---------- Post added at 07:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:52 PM ----------
where can i get 1013 ROM from? i would realy like to test and compare this one, too.
I got the 1013 ROM from goophone.hk website. I can assure you I don't speak Cantonese/Mandarine but I managed to get on there and find the ROM.
The 1013 is very stable and eveything I said in my previous post. Will stay with it for a long time. Battery life is amazing now...and yes I also used many ROM's. The g-apps is essential along with this rom. I tried to get 1021 ROM but I need password....no go 4 now..
Hi xlr8me,
dunno how you managed to get it from that site. i'm trying to find anything on that site using google website translation, but with no success
may you have a direkt link for me? that would realy be useful. Thank you.
Hint: try "goophone.hk" as password. i've read it on several sites that they use this one.
here for everybody (i finaly made it) direct links to the last two ROMs:
ROM 1013:
http://115.239.249.24/down/Y5-zn-f-...hk=14e5086d14f219c82b23772cb64bb18f-174000334
ROM 1022:

happy downloading & flashing
ROM 1022 contains another .zip file inside which is version 1021. this version requires a password. "goophone.hk" (and some more password i tried) doesn't work as password
even so, i tried to use GPS with 1013 and many versions before, but it doesn't work. did anybody get GPS working on goophone y5? if so, how did you do that?
location via Edge or 3G doesn't work as well.
does anybody know how to modify a rom to change thwe language? it would even be nice to know how to change the language of apps.
i think it's quiet easy to do. it's only .zip file content and .apk file which can be modified with a java editor.

Yes GPS works. Make sure you have GPS satellites and A-GPS ticked with google (NOT nokia) inside of A-GPS settings.
It works but not as super fast as perhaps other phones. Just be patient.
The language is changed inside the settings. Changing the language of apps is a challenge so don't expect anything easy there.
Not sure whether to test 1022. Anyone know what's new with this ROM?
Anyone got a link to the above files especially 1022? It says error...
Thank you for your tips. But i already tried/checks all this
Here's where i found the files. Dunno why the direct links don't work anymore. Try this side instead: http://www.400gb.com/u/582581/1627896
1. klick the rom you like from the list
2. enter the shown number into the text field and press the big, fat, green button below
3. on the next site there's a short description of the rom and below there's a table of links. 2 rows, 3 links in a row. choose the first link in the second row
4. you can download the file
1022 has got a password in it that i don't know.
1013 has no password and can be installed in the odenary way.
Thnx dude..
Yeah just as I thought password protected...
Just a tip for anyone get a bumper preferably silicone for your thunderbird/goophone Y5.
It has tremendously improved the GPS reception as I was using it naked before.
Also forget using GPS with Aluminium case it won't work...it reduced GPS by about -6~-12dB and no good.
Guys, just a quick question.

[GUIDE][WORKAROUND]Enable Google Now Offline Voice on Unsupported Devices

Update[12-1-13]: Flashable zip added
There are many Jellybean users(including me) who do not get an option to download offline voice recognition support in Google Search app(see image below).
The only explanation I was able to find was that Google excluded some Jellybean devices to download offline files due to hardware limitations(Source: utter! FAQ)

"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
I don't know what the limitations are but I found a workaround, and here it is!
The Google Search app downloads the offline voice files in /data/data/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/app_g3_models/<language name>/<offline voice synthesis files here>
To trick Search we just have to place the offline voice files in the directory and set permissions, and you'll have offline voice available on your unsupported device
(See next post for offline voice files download)
Downloads & Instructions
Download:
English(US):
Flashable ZIP: Download
Minimum space required in /data partition = 32MB
If you don't have this much space you will get a bootloop, alternatively you can try creating a symlinking.
Non-Flashable archive: Download
Instructions (Only for Non-Flashable archive):
1) After extracting the file you will get a folder named en-US
2) Place it in /data/data/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/app_g3_models/<here>
So it should look like, \data\data\com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox\app_g3_models\en-US
3) Change permissions of all files to -rw-rw-rw- or chmod 666
4) Enjoy
NOTE:
Even after doing everything you won't get the option to download files from the Search app, though all apps utilizing the offline voice recognition will work

To-Do
1) Get more language files
Help me in this, someone please upload offline voice files for other languages
To do this zip the folders present in your phone's /data/data/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/app_g3_models/<folders here> dir.
2)Make flashable zips for the voice files
Anybody who has time and experience in creating flashable zips can help. Done.

Give us the link!
These files are all very large. I had the old one on sdext and symlinked it to /system/usr/srec/. So now, symlink them to /data/data/com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/app_g3_models/
EDIT:
Running on an Armv6 device which is a main reason why offline speech recognition not available.
First tried synlinking my previous srec/en-US. Rebooted. FC.
Found the Mediafire link, coaxed that into downloading, extracted the placed on /data/sdext2/languages/en-US. Permissions rw rw rw. Symlinked. Rebooted. FC.
BTW, a few weeks ago when first installing the 4.4 UI thread's version, it spontaneously, got to "initializing en-US.," took my voice and got results! Once, just once. Have the sideloaded recent Play version now. For some odd reason, any search (typed in or dictated using Dragon) will FC when the speech language is en-US!! If I set it to Spanish, then English queries work fine.
Note that during the ICS fidgiting days, they said to set permisions 777 (overkill?).

Symlinking from SD-Card works fine for me. But changing permissions to 777 doesn't. I can only keep it till 766.
I guess your second issue is caused because search might be confusing eng with spanish for some reasons(maybe the files were interchanged, etc) try deleting app data
Also I have ARMv7 still I don't get the option

Spanish was quite arbitrary. Any English variant would FC doing any query. It is not searching in Spanish nor presenting Spanish language output.
Armv6 is the cause of the FCs. The jni.so, included in the Play apk or pushed to /system/lib, is compiled for Armv7 so will FC on a non-Armv7 device. The fact that offline speech did work one time (do not even know how I got there) means that there is some way around this, but ... find it.
What is your locale? Might not present options outside specific locales. Might use Xposed AppSettings module to switch to a supported locale for Google Search.

Well ... did it work for you? Who knows? Miracles can happen
It works for me, but not for Google Now in the way that it should. Offline voice typing works (through the keyboard), tested by just going to SMS and dictating a message using the Voice Typing on Google Keyboard. Worked fine (although a bit off since I have an Australian accent).
Google Search/Now, on the other hand, likes to think that we don't have it installed and thus won't actually let you do anything offline. It keeps complaining that I don't have a connection to Google, but still won't let me do offline functions such as setting timers or starting a stopwatch.
Any ideas?

Check your settings->language and input->speech recognition. How many "Google" entries do you have? I have two, one for the offline, one for the online. I choose the online one (no real way to tell, try.) and all other voice toys work. Choose the offline and Google Search has stopped on any attempt to use voice recognition.
So I can get speech into google now from swype using its dragon (among the better) recognition. I must tap the search to make use of it. This works if the online google is chosen, above.
==============
More. Hitting that mic icon will crash Google Search, with variations. Sometimes, very quickly. Sometimes fails but with "speak now" displayed. If I am inside a search, it even shows the language (Spanish-Espania that I have set because of FCs on any English).
Since a couple of us have actually had it work once or so, there must be a way of getting it, but likely requires the best hackers around (Note: Google, forget I said that! -- YOU support our device).

Says nothing, nada, about downloading new language models so these must be either included in the en-US or in the apk. Looking at the current 3.1.8 apk's contents shows pumpkins (love Google's naming) for en-US and several European languages (no Japanese but update will have it) more than those in the posting. Then action.punpkin are apparently commands understood by gnow and their UTF8? (not really, probably pure 2 byte Unicode!) representations in the target language. (OK, hackers, this looks like fair play!).
That 20meg+ download contains models for decoding sounds/phonemes/whatever, and possibly grammar rules. Look for an English+ version or maybe that is what we already have. CJK MUST!! have other rules.
So the pumpkins are baked into the pie (the 28th as last week ) However commands get into the box, they can be interpreted in the included languages. Type them, speak them, or get them there by some other "intent."

The key may lie here or maybe soon will be. The sample plugins provided there work nicely.

That is not an FC. Looks like a fallback to online recognition (used to be such a thing)?
Maybe not! As I cited, the commands are parsed in the pumpkins. Placing call (or running an app) needs nothing outside the phone. Often enough, I have signin or no-connection errors with Google, unrelated to voice or armv6.

I do not know where to get them. Was hard enough to coax Mediafire to give me the one on the OP. If we can get a sideload of the new GoogleSearch, we might have some idea of what is going on. CJK cannot go off the same models are English and European languages. They are spoken differently, inflections, etc. That apk is not big enought to contain even one of these files, however.
Also, I have no accounts with Mediafire, etc. I suppose I could use my dropbox or drive were I to get these files. Wish Google were not making things sooo difficult. If I install an app "against advice" and it crashes, that is my problem.
I have the December 7 apk!
Looks no different. No Japanese anything. So maybe this new version is not yet ready.

Everything is/should be server side, including the UI for new cards instead of needing upgrades, but ...
Off-line voice recognition is client side by definition and CJK is simply spoken much differently than English and Western European languages.
I used quickshortcutmaker to get to the hidden language pack screen so I know it's there. Wonder if that will help anyone else that's poking around with this stuff.

Please explain how you did this? The picture in this case does not replace 100 words of good instruction.
1. Get this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sika524.android.quickshortcut&hl=en
2. Go to activities tab (should be the default when you open it up)
3. Filter for the word "Google Search"
4. Open the Google Search tree
5. Should be there, but not sure because I haven't got Google Now on my phone. Only the crappy HTC normal voice search replacement.

[PORT] Quake 1 on FTEDroid (w/ gkp profiles for newer & older GameKeyboard apps)

--THREAD REQUESTED TO BE CLOSED 6/23/17 DUE TO BEING UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THREAD OR PROVIDE SUPPORT TO QUESTIONS --
Hi All,
I've created this thread to share information on an Android port of the FTE QuakeWorld client called FTEDroid. (Scroll down for download links, installation, and setup instructions). The app is free to download and use and it allows you to to play Quake 1 in Singleplayer/Multiplayer modes. If you use Gamekeyboard+, you can play using the Xperia Play's slide out game controls rather than using the touchscreen. (Also... it may be able to run other versions of Quake, but I haven't got around to trying yet).
Along with the FTEDroid info, I'm sharing 2 Gamekeyboard gkp profiles that I mapped out. The first one is for the newer "Gamekeyboard +" app v. 6.0.0, that is currently available through the Google Play Store. The 2nd gkp is for the older Gamekeyboard app v 4.0.1 that I thought some of you may still have on your phones. (See the Gamekeyboard setup instructions below for the download links).
FTE developer "Spike", (who developed FTEDroid), has done an awesome job with this port. He and the FTE team all deserve a HUGE thanks for their hard work. I've tried several other ports for Quake 1 and this is the smoothest and best performing one that I've tried so far. I'm really hoping that some other Xperia Play owners will give this a shot and provide suggestions and feedback. I also think it would be a blast to try to set up some Multiplayer Quake sessions with anyone interested, so please try this out and give some feedback.
(Below are some actual screen shots of Quake 1 running on FTEDroid, taken from my Xperia Play).

DISCLAIMER:
None of these steps or suggestions should harm your phone. However, if you choose to follow the steps in this thread and install any of the linked files, then you are choosing to take full responsibility for any bad things that could happen to your phone. Please don't proceed with the below steps if you don't agree with this and are not comfortable with using root apps that modify your phone. (Gamekeyboard needs root to work with this gkp, but you can use FTEDroid with touchscreen if you're not rooted).
(IMPORTANT) You should own a copy of the Quake 1 game to run it on FTEDroid, as you need the PAK0 and PAK1 game data files for the game to work. I'm not able to supply the PAK files to you, as they are copyrighted by id Software. If you don't own the game, you can do an Internet search and buy the original Quake 1 from Steam as a direct download (it's currently about 10 USD). You can also obtain the PAK files by purchasing an original Quake 1 installation CD off of eBay, and then copying the PAK files from the CD over to your SD card. I've seen just the original Quake on eBay for as cheap as $5, but I purchased a Windows version of “Ultimate Quake” off of eBay for $25 USD (and it includes Quake 1, 2, and 3). I was able to insert the CD into my laptop, open “My Computer”, right click on the CD/DVD location, and then explore the CD's contents without needing to install the game to my computer. I located the PAK files by going into the Setup folder, then going into the ID1 folder.
-------------------------------------------------
STEP A.
Instructions to set up FTEDroid – adapted from this website: http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/FTEDroid
1. Download and install the FTEDroid apk onto your phone. (You must enable installation of “Unknown Sources” in your phone's settings to be able to install the apk). You can grab the FTEDroid apk from a download link at the above referenced wiki website: ( http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/FTEDroid )
2. Connect your Xperia Play to your computer with a USB cable. On the root of your SD card, create a file folder named fte. Then within the fte folder, create another folder named id1. (Make sure to use lower case letters, as this is important).
3. Copy the files “PAK0.PAK” and “PAK1.PAK” into the id1 folder that you created on your SD card.
4. After doing these steps, you should be able to open the FTEDroid app and run Quake on your Xperia Play. When it first starts up, choose whichever Graphic Preset you want. I've been using “Normal (Faithful)” and it works good for me.
-------------------------------------------------
STEP B.
Detailed Setup Instructions for GameKeyboard+ (version 6.0) for Quake1 using FTEDroid and the linked gkp profile: (use the alternate gkp down below if you have an older GameKeyboard app).
**If you don't own Gamekeyboard +, you can purchase it from Google Play at this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.locnet.gamekeyboard2&hl=en
1. Download the gkp profile from this link and save it on your SD card: LINK REMOVED - as I am no longer able to provide support to this thread.
2. If this is the first time you are opening the GameKeyboard + app, then click "Not Now" when it prompts you to "skip soft keyboard and choose stand alone mode."
3. Now follow steps 1 and 2 on the GameKeyboard main setup screen to enable it as the active Input Method
4. For “Input Device”, set it to “Keyboard/Digital Gamepad”
5. For “Usage Mode,” enable the “Show Qwerty” setting, (you'll want the Qwerty keyboard to pop up later when playing the game so you can type in the Game Console). (**Also make sure that “Emulate Keyboard” is chosen).
6. Now go to "Settings" and enable "Use Advance Input". (This will likely prompt Superuser to ask you to grant permission if this is first time running GameKeyboard).
7. Scroll up a little and enable "Alternate Key Detect"
8. Now go to "Import Profile" and import the Quake1-FTEDroid3.gkp. Then go to "Save Profile" to save it, and finally go to "Load Profile" to load it - (you should be able to just load it in the future after you do these steps the first time).
9. Now scroll down and uncheck the box for "Use Hot Key" to disable it.
10. Then scroll all the way to bottom and go into "Internal Options. Make sure the boxes are checked for "8-way D-Pad," "Show Start and Select," "Show Analog Stick," "Remap Hardkey," "Show Keyboard First," and "Use Analog. "
11. *This step is important-- Go to "Custom and Test" in the main GameKeyboard setup screen... this will pop up the game controls. Then touch quickly in the very center of the virtual onscreen "Dpad." Now go to "Rotation" and select Left rotation. (Now use the back button to back out of the GameKeyboard app and go on to Step C).
-------------------------------------------------
STEP B - ALTERNATE DOWNLOAD/ SETUP INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE OLDER GAMEKEYBOARD v.4.0.1
(The left touchpad does work with this gkp, but I gave up (for now) on trying to get the right one to work. All of the other controls are mapped the same as the gkp for the newer Gamekeyboard app above).
1. Download the gkp profile from this link and save it on your SD card: LINK REMOVED - as I am no longer able to provide support to this thread
2. Now follow steps 1 and 2 on the GameKeyboard main setup screen to enable it as the active Input Method
3. Now go into settings and in "Quick Setup", choose "Xperia Play->Touchscreen"
4. In settings, scroll down to "Import Profile" and import the file "Quake1-FTEDroid-v401b.gkp" from where you saved it on your SD card. Then go to "Save Profile" to save it, and finally go to "Load Profile" to load it - (you should be able to just load it in the future after you do these steps the first time).
5. Now, scroll through these different settings to make sure they are all enabled:
__8 way D-pad
__Show Start & Select
__Show Analog Stick
__Remap Hardkey
__Go into Customize Layout and make sure that "Enable Custom Layout" is enabled
__Show Warning
__Use Advance Input
__Use Analog
6. Make sure to disable "Touch Screen Mode" by removing the check box next to it. Now use the back button to back out of the GameKeyboard app.
-------------------------------------------------
STEP C.
Last Step is to make a couple small changes within the Quake 1 game's configuration settings.
Boot up into the Quake 1 Main Game Menu, then scroll down to “Options,” and select it by pressing the X hard key. Now select "Customize Controls" and scroll down to "Attack." Now press the X hard key and it should say “Press Key” to let you change the binding setting for “Attack.” Press the X key again to map "Attack" to the actual X hard key on the phone.
**I would also advise going into the game's Video Options and increasing the Contrast. This makes the game look much better on our phones. Just Apply Settings afterwards and it should stick after you back out to the main menu again. Now just use the back button to go back to the main menu.
~~~~ THAT'S IT! You should now be able to play Quake 1 on your Xperia Play with the hard key game controls ~~~~
-------------------------------------------------
Here's how the Xperia Play Hard Keys are mapped:
“Directional Buttons”-- Up and Down are mapped to walk forward and backward, Left and right turn the character left and right.
“Left touchpad” will move the character forwards, backwards, left, and right. (should work on both gkp's)
“Right touchpad” pans the character's view around in the game -- this does NOT work with the gkp for the older GameKeyboard app v. 4.0.1. (I'm having a hard time with the touchpad controls being too sensitive and difficult for me to control. But, I mapped them out just in case others want to use them or want to try to improve on them).
“Triangle” key is mapped to "Jump/Swim Up"
“X” key is "Attack"
“Square” key is mapped to "Look Up"
“Circle” key is mapped to "Look Down"
“Select” key is mapped to "swim down"
“Start” key is mapped to switch weapon
“Left (L back shoulder)” key is mapped to Step Left
“Right (R back shoulder )” key is mapped to Step Right
“Volume up” key shows info on progress/stats within the game
“Volume down” key should toggle between the Gamekeyboard controls and the Qwerty Keyboard
“Menu” key pulls down the Game Console (it should also pull down the Qwerty Keyboard to let you type in the console if you set it to show Qwerty in the Gamekeyboard+ settings)
“Back” button brings you back to the Main Game Menu where you can load/save the game, change options, etc...
That's great! Please give some feedback after you try it out and share what you think about it. I'd also appreciate it if you could let me know if you like the way the Gamekeyboard profile is set up. I'm still pretty new to gaming on the Xperia Play and I mapped out the gpk to what seemed most comfortable for me. If there's a better way to get the controls set up for the Xperia Play, I'm open to changing things around.
Also, I'm going to try to upload an additional gkp that would work with the older Gamekeyboard v 4.0.1. I know that some people still have the older Gamekeyboard apps and would probably like to use that rather than the newer version.
As far as the mods question.... I'm not sure about other mods, but I don't think FTEDroid will run Laser Arena. I checked out your link and tried to run the game with FTEDroid tonight. It gave an error that said "Server is using protocol version 18, which is not supported by this version of FTE Quakeworld. (see the below screenshot from my phone). Maybe there's some other Android port out there that would run Laser Arena... it looks like a fun game .
I've never used Gameboard before. I see the Play site says it works on Xperia Play for Gingerbread. I'm running SlimBean, which I think runs Jellybean. Any idea if it'll still work?
I'll look into that server version thing. Maybe it can be patched to become compatible in some way.
That would be cool if you could figure out a way to patch things so it would work. :thumbup:
You probably did the same thing, but I searched the SlimBean thread, LuPus V3, and Turbo JB kernel threads... and didn't see any mention of GameKeyboard. I went ahead and posted a question on the SlimBean thread to see if anyone knows if it's compatible with that ROM and kernels. I'm currently running rooted stock 2.3.4 Gingerbread with stock kernel, and it works great with that. If no one responds and if I can get the time, I may try to install SlimBean and test it out.
Hi pWEN,
I found this post where someone said that the "Gamepad" partially works with SlimBean (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40996551#post40996551. They said the touchpads don't work, but it sounds like the hard keys probably do. (I think they were referring to the GameKeyboard app when they said Gamepad) .
When I play Quake1 on my Xperia Play with this port...I honestly find the touchpads too difficult to use due to lack of ability to precisely control player's movements... so I prefer using the hard keys anyway.
(EDIT: I tested out the Gamekeyboard app on SlimBean ROM with Lupus kernel v.13 and also with Turbo v3.1. Both the gamepad/ hard keys and the touchpads worked with the ROM & either kernel.
Ah, okay. I really love the touchpads so I'd be a bit disappointed if I couldn't use them, but it's not a deal-breaker. Can you link me to your thread so I can subscribe to it? I'll get Gamekeyboard on and try it out.
I dunno what ROM you're currently running, but SlimBean is pretty cool. It's got launcher and ROM customization built in, including theme support. Really speeds up the phone, too. Only issue seems to be that it requires an SD card to install some OS files to, which is irritating since the OS itself is only like 26 mb. I used the Lupus kernel, which is really nice, as it has TWRP custom recovery built into it. If you need any files, just let me know, took some detective work for me to find them all, but I've got them. I used this install guide, which was way more helpful than the one in the SlimBean thread.
SlimBean does look cool and I'll probably try it out soon. Thanks for the install guide link. I'm just currently running stock rooted 2.3.4. (Edit: I used Titanium Backup Pro to debloat the stock ROM... so it's not just straight stock now).
The touchpads are cool, but I'm hoping you'll like Quake with just the regular controls. If GameKeyboard doesn't work, you should be able to get a refund if you go back into the Play Store within 2 hours of buying it... (I just read on the news where Google increased the refund time window).
(Confirmed the the touchpads do work with Gamekeyboard using Lupus v13 or Turbo v3.1 with SlimBean ROM).
I'm not sure if this is exactly what you want, but the web link for this thread is:
LOL... It didn't make sense to me that you would need the link to this Quake thread that I created... but I just wasn't sure what you meant. Sorry about that.
I asked about Gamekeyboard in the SlimBean thread: here.
pWEN,
I went ahead and flashed SlimBean and LuPuS JellyBean v13 Kernel 720p version ... (I also tried Turbo Kernel v3.1 ).
I can confirm that the phone's hard keys and the touchpads BOTH WORK using GameKeyboard with SlimBean and either one of these kernels. I also tested out the Multiplayer mode while running SlimBean and was able to connect into it (I attached a few screenshots below).
As far as the Quake game performance with SlimBean, I found that the game didn't run as smooth as it does on stock 2.3.4 GB. On Quake, the Turbo Kernel seemed to perform pretty good overall without needing to overclock... but with Lupus on Quake, it was really laggy and I had to overclock up to 1209 MHz to get it to stop lagging. (Using both kernels... I also tried to play one of my current favorite games (Aralon Sword & Shadow). With the Lupus kernel, Aralon really struggled and froze on me anytime I would toggle the Gamekeyboard controls while playing the game...even with the overclocking up to 1401 MHz. Aralon seemed to run smoother with Turbo kernel, but the game froze on me after playing it for a while. (Aralon runs smooth with very few hiccups running stock 2.3.4 GB/ stock kernel).
I'm pretty new to the Xperia Play and I'm not a developer (just an android enthusiast ). I'm not 100% sure what the best set up is for gaming on this device. I've read some thread posts, (example here: from darkharbinger81), where others report that with this device, Gingerbread seems to work better than JellyBean for gaming. So for now, I'll probably just stick with debloated 2.3.4 GB.
(Edit: I've played with SlimBean some more this evening and I'm really impressed with the ROM itself. It's put together really well and has lots of great features. I found the "Performance" settings where you can overclock and change Governors/Schedulers without even needing an app like SetCPU. If I wasn't using my Xperia Play soley for gaming, then I would seriously consider sticking with the SlimBean ROM).
What settings did you change to overclock in SlimBean? I've never messed around with that before, but I think it might be a good idea (especially since Minecraft runs more laggy on SB than it does on stock).
Pretty cool that online multiplayer works. Have you tried adding bots? Is such a thing possible here?
I seem to remember someone ported Quake 3 Arena to Android. Ever tried that?
You can access the overclock/governor/scheduler settings in SlimBean by going to phone's main settings menu, then "Performance," then they should be somewhere in there. :fingers-crossed: (I flashed back to stock GB last night and don't remember exactly where everything was). You probably know this, but If you decide to overclock, just be really cautious as it can damage your phone if you aren't careful. Here's a link to an overclocking discussion for our phone that gives some tips.
From what I can tell, Quake1 on FTEDroid doesn't have bots and I'm not sure if they can be added. I see in your profile that you have a background in game development and if you want to get some technical details on FTEDroid, I think that Spike (the FTEDroid developer) and the other FTE dev. team would be willing to chat with you on their FTE IRC channel. I chatted with him and a couple others on there briefly and they were nice and seemed open to discussion.
I think the Quake3 port you're talking about is Zeus Arena. It looks like it was pulled off of Google Play a while back due to development issues/terms of use issue... (I'm not sure what that means). My friend has it on his Xperia Play and I've played both Quake2 and Quake3 on it in Singleplayer mode. The game runs and looks great, but I had trouble using the controls well enough to effectively control the player. (Maybe I just need some more practice).
Yes, I'll definitely have to look for Zeus Arena!
Thanks for the link to the overclocking thread. I'll have to take a look later. I tried running FTE with Quake 1 as-is, and it's a bit laggy (and I'll definitely need that Gamekeyboard app). I've been trying to get on top of this Quake stuff, but all of my free time has been absorbed by work lately. So I'm trying to get as much information on it as I can, while I can.
I looked into bots, but so far haven't found a tutorial on setting them up with FTE (Android or no). A lot of this Quake stuff is as old as the game itself, but I feel my Google-fu is strong, so I'm sure I'll dig it up eventually. Omicron bots seem to be the best choice going by the forum debates.
Another question for you: You only mention Quake 1 on here, but shouldn't the mission packs work as well? I copied the pak0.pak files from the hipnotic and rogue folders to sister locations at the same level as the id1 folder, just as it shows up in my install directory (I got all of the Quake games through Steam). Not sure how to tell if they work or how I'd access them, though! And have you tried Quake 2 and its mission packs with this yet?
I plan to test out Quake 2 on FTEDroid soon. It'll be great if it works.
I don't own mission packs for any of the Quake versions, so I can't test things out, but I'm wondering if you could just use a file explorer and temporarily cut the Quake 1 pak files out of sdcard/fte/id1 and place them in a different folder... then copy the mission pak files into sdcard/fte/id1. It would be a bit of a pain to move things around like that... but I wonder if it would let you run the mission packs. That's how I got Laser Arena to boot (though it didn't run because of the server issue).
Ah okay, cool. I started a thread over on QuakeOne with a bunch of questions for them about this. Here's the link!
Also, I set up overclocking on my phone. Didn't make Minecraft less laggy (SlimBean issue, I guess) until I turned off fancy graphics, but what can you do. lol
Too bad that the overclocking didn't help much. Maybe there's some other tweaks you can do to improve performance with SlimBean...maybe try out Turbo Kernel, as (IMO) it seemed to perform with less lagging when I tried it. And thanks man for starting that thread on Quake One Forums. I just don't possess the knowledge to even know what to ask Spike and the others.
I used the info from the QuakeOne discussion and loaded Quake2 and Quake 3 into FTEDroid. They both started up and I was able to connect with some limited servers... but more testing and playing around with it is needed to see if the games would be playable on our phones. Also, the GameKeyboard profile that I mapped out for Quake1 didn't work with the games that did connect... so we'd have to play around with Gamekeyboard and the config files to see if the controls could be remapped for each game. I took some screenshots of all of the different games that FTE says it can run (see content below). I don't think all of them work on the Xperia Play, but I'm blown away by the list of games.
Even if none of the other games work well for our phones... hopefully other Xperia Play owners can still have fun playing Quake1 in Singleplayer mode with FTEDroid. :good: I need to get into bed so I can get up for work tomorrow... but thanks again for your time with this considering your busy work schedule.
Hello. I have not tried to play Quake on the Xperia Play in over 1 1/2 years, but these instructions worked for me when I last tried them.
Unfortunately, I won't be able to help with troubleshooting as I'm no longer using this device.
