I've been running Linux for almost 10 years and have asked the same question. Bottom line is I've not yet been able to use Linux to update phones. Best advice I can give is "borrow" a PC running XP. If you google XP on usb stick there are methods that seem ideal for these odd occasions. I've also tried via virtual box but that failed too. I'm not too happy trying "possible" methods in case the update fails part way, and the phone gets bricked.

p.s. update to 21E asap, you won't believe the difference in battery life!

[Q] ODIN stuck at factoryfs.rfs. Please help!!

Hi,
I installed CyanogenMod 7 on my Samsung Captivate a few days ago. But since TV out did not work, I decided to roll-back to stock using the method defined here: youtube DOT com/watch?v=UDtxnH4lFuk.
I used ODIN 1 Click Captivate 2.1 Stock JF6 Firmware to roll-back to 2.1 (URL: mobiletechvideos DOT com/blog/?page_id=186)
But ODIN stopped at factoryfs.rfs.... I also tried some other ROMS using ODIN like Darky's, but nothing worked. Another important thing is that my Windows 7 64bit does not recognize the samsung captivate any more. I tried Vista and XP as well, but nothing works. Sometimes it picks the driver sometimes it doesn't. I also installed Nexus S driver but ODIN does not recognize the phone when Nexus S driver is installed.
The phone goes into download mode, and that's it!!! It does not turn on at all. Since I have two samsung captivate phones, I always use completely charged battery but the phone is not starting at all. Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks!
p.s.:
1) I am using completely charged battery.
2) I have tried all three operating systems: Vista, XP and Win 7
3) I have tried it on a laptop and a desktop, but no success.
I had the same problem. I ended up sending mine to an xda member to have it repaired.
Before going there try going to ponack.net and look for the returning to stock post and download the odin to stock version there and see if that works. If you get that to work then look for super one click root in the captivate forums on xda.
These are the steps I followed the 2nd time I decided to flash stock from cm7. I know, didn't learn my lesson the 1st time.
If this doesn't work then get in touch with connexion2005 here on xda or at mobiletechreviews.com his name is Josh. He is a great guy and does great fast work. He will be able to fix it for you. Its not free but well worth it, much better than buying a new phone.
Hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

Also, try a different port and another cable to see if that helps.
Forgot, next time post in the captivate q/a section. You will get more support that way. I dont think the devs look in this section very often.

Gingerbread

It's amazing we were supposed to so called have our gingerbread like 2 months ago, has anyone heard anything? Because I am trying hard not to have to root my Infuse, and I don't really have a way to root it either but it is so aggravating being on 2.2 still especially with such a great device.

AT&T never said an exact date officially, unless you go by what some customer service rep said on twitter. They only said it would be this year.

Just root it and flash serendipity or infused, or dlev, or any other gingerbread rom.
It's very simple.

No way to root? Huh

+1 All you need to root is a comp, usb cable and your phone, rooting is quite literally one click (superoneclick)...unless you use HDMI religiously, the roms here are awesome gingerbread goodness even if unofficial.

dude, get the drivers from the samsung site, get heimdall 1.1, get visual c++ redistrobutable package and get the comunity kernel.
extract the kernel .zip and find the zimage
install the drivers
open heimdall
put the zimage in the kernel slot
put the phone in download mode and connect to usb
hit the flash button in heimdall
pretty easy

Just follow the steps

that's all you need to do.
Thank u

To make things easier on yourself, you should really find a comp, google "Superoneclick Infuse" and it should pop up step by step install instructions. (download link included)
Still, with the root/flash options, I too would like the official release from AT&T...the wait is getting too long.
Question -I assume I'll need to reload apps if I flash a ROM, correct?
I'll just leave this here...

Use titanium backup. Get the paid version.

Hard-bricked Cappy, I need help (running Linux)

My laptop is running Linux (Fedora 17) and I read somewhere there was a way to unbrick the unbrickable with a linux device. I dont remember where I read it, and I know Heimdall is incompatible with the cappy. Can somebody throw me a bone here, or possibly just a link to a walkthrough? Thanks,
Owl
It works fine with Linux... Odin on the other hand is the problem.

Well it seems my current problem is Heimdall is supported by Debian Linux, whereas Fedora is based on Red Had. I need to find a proper package (.rpm) of the 1.3.1 version. I've been warned the new one may not support the cappy.

Prometheus not compatible with baseband (fixed)

Hi, looking for some help. I am currently using XBSA's ROM and I really like it. However, I am using the Blue kernel as it is the only one that gives me phone signal and wifi. I would like to use the Prometheus 1.5 kernel for better performance.
I flashed v21e fls and bin using smartflash tool but I've read that it may not have done a great job. The RIL does not match and actually the phone has no signal if I do match it to the baseband. I don't get ghost calls.
A problem I have is that I'm supposed to remove my battery and connect the USB cable but with no battery, my phone cannot run for more than a few seconds on my PCs USB power. Not sure how I managed to get SFT to recognise my phone last time - I kept messing about with it but left the battery in.
So in summary, what do I need to do to get my phone working with the Prometheus kernel and how can I get SFT or LG Flash Tool to recognise my phone?
Thanks

If you are using bluekernel some modules are changed thats why you probably have problems. You need to replace them with original if you change kernel.
About the phone getting recognised turn off phone remove battery, insert battery and just press vol up.

OK thanks, I'll give that a shot. I'll try reflashing 21e from a different source.

It was my understanding that the ONLY guaranteed way to get the v21e baseband to update properly is to install the official LG stock ROM for V21E and then switch to your ROM and kernel of choice after that.

You are probably right. That's what I'm going to try now but I can't get my phone recognised by LG Mobile Support Tool, so I have split the 21e KDZ into a fls and bin using jes0411's tool. I am going to try to use SFT to flash the bin but I can't get it to recognise my phone either :/
Time to page XBSA...

I'm sorted. Xbsall spent ages helping me out and got it all sorted. My USB cable was naff but a spare one worked fine. That's weird cost I tried changing the cable before. Got everything working and flashed the 21e kdz and it all works great now. AnTuTu benchmark test jumped from around 5000 to 6400 by switching to Prometheus kernel.
Hope that helps you, previously I flashed some small fls and bin files but you have to flash the 300MB file.

Virus on my SGIII (and using a mac)

Hey whats going on guys? So this is my first post because usually everyone asks the same questions in the other threads. I found it weird when I would open some apps and it would have this turn dial thing and say "please wait to prepare app for use" or something similar. Decided to download Kasperky and see what it found. It found 4 threats all in my system memory. I tried deleting it but it wouldnt let me. I have my iMac with me in my apartment. The windows comp I used to root is at my parents house. Is there any way to fix this? Im hurtin' :crying:.
Thank you in advanced!
GS3 and Mac do not play nice together. I had to resort to bootcamp.
As amazing as macs are, this is a biiig downer.

I know there is Rom toolbox that can flash a new Rom on your device reverting it back to either stock or a Rom of your choice that's all through the phone you can try that if you are rooted.
Or you can use the free version of mobile Odin and flash a new Rom etc
