About to root, do I need to backup my IMEI? How do i do it? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

So I'm about to root my S3 and am wondering if I need to backup my IMEI. I found the thread showing how to, but then the first post was updated saying not to use this method. I read through the thread and some people say to still use it, others not too.
If I need to back it up to avoid any potential issues I'll def do it, but I just don't know where to go to do it correctly.
Suggestions??

You don't need to back up your IMEI if you are simply rooting. I believe it is only AOSP roms that people have had IMEI issues with. Stock roms like Synergy, Bean's, and NoSympathy's are safe.
That being said...I backed mine up anyways

Thanks I didn't realize that the issues were only in the aosp roms.
What method did you use to back it up?? I've read good things about cm and was thinking about maybe trying it.

I just used this method. I ran it in a terminal emulator on my phone, and then sent the backup to Dropbox.

[Q] How to Backup?

Sorry for the novice question. About to get a 4th replacement G2X. Last weekend I spent a huge amount of time reconfiguring number 3. I have Launcherpro and backed it up to the SD card but the new phone would not restore.
Is there an easy way to backup all the apps and settings?

That requires a root, right?
Yes it does.
Yup. If you need to know how to root, check out my signature. Click the link that says "Rooted" and it'll take you to where you can root. The Superoneclick method mentioned elsewhere on the site won't work for G2x above 2.2. So just follow my link and you'll be good to go. And be sure to thank the OP that made the thread.
Thanks.
New (4th replacement) arrived and it won't read the SIM card.
If you have to flash a rooted rom to root, you loose your configuration. So, going from stock to rooted rom you are going to have to reconfigure. Right?

You don't have to flash a rooted rom to get root anymore. There is a root zip available.

[Q] Motorola Xoom Tablet 3G + WiFi needs upgraded, rooted, and unlocked

Hi there XDA community,
I would like to know if there is an up-to-day tutorial that has working file links? I would like to upgrade, root, and unlock my Xoom. I just bought a Motorola Xoom from 1saleaday.com the Model is an MZ601 and says "approved by IDA for use in Singapore" it is currently just as is and is not unlocked or rooted. I would like to get it upgraded, unlocked, and rooted so I can use it for what I got it for. It has WiFi and Data service that supports WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100, GSM 850/900/1800/1900, ATO_ITEM: AP1520AD3X3. It is currently running on Android Honeycomb 3.0.1, build number H.6.1-38-9. If you any ideas, files, links, tutorials (up-to-day), or can help, that would be great!
Thanks InfiniteImmortal.
P.S.
Here are the configurations;
Model Number: MZ601
Android version: 3.0.1
Firmware: GAS_ASIA_USAEVRSTURTIRD_P016
Baseband version: N_014.83.28P
Baseband configuration: UCAEVEUB1B8EU034.0R
Kernel: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build Number: H.6.1-38-9
More specs will be provided if they are needs, thanks again II!
yeah, there are tons of tutorials, relatively up to date. Relatively, because the new method to root xyboards might work for classic xooms too. This method would not require you to unlock your xoom for rooting and thus allow titanium backup to backup all your data before unlocking and thus wiping your xoom.

Okay I will go and read these threads, but are you for sure they work on the EU models? I have read on many different sites and threads that say the normal way of rooting, unlocking, and upgrading for US models have bricked the EU ones to were they did not work anymore. This is one reason why I'm looking for an up-to-date threads that say they work with the EU models. If you could clarify more that would be great.

Yes, the one post I have marked with "(a post by me)" is exactly how I rooted my xoom and that is a german MZ601. And it works, no brick

That is weird. I have never read a thread about a brick that occured using the method I (and others) described. Could you maybe post a link to such a thread?
To Clarify this: the Unlock should impose absolutely no risk at all as it is a feature implemented by motorola. The recovery, even if it didn't work, wouldn't lead to a brick. And the universal xoom root should not do any magic either, it should only add two files to the filesystem (su and Superuser.apk) and remove those files that would make your new shiny recovery go byebye once booted
Ty my knowledge, only the "flashing a custom rom" part is a source of bricking. And that can easily be avoided by flashing a MZ601-rom instead of something else
That said, nobody can guarantee you that this is completely safe. There is a thread right next door with a poor guy whose xoom bricked itself overnight. That was a wifi-xoom, and so far no one knows why that happened. We're still working on a solution, though

yes, you will be able to go back to the original rom and lock your bootloader again. If you do that, you will be able to get ota updates (if you really want to do so, usually custom roms are ahead of the ota-updates)
You should make a backup of your xoom right after starting the new recovery, even before rooting. That will give you a set of files that, if you restore them, will reset your xoom back to stock, thus you'll only have to re-lock your bootloader to get ota-updates

Custom ROM Files
Hey llama-power,
You say in your thread post that "If you already downloaded your new rom, put that onto the sdcard as well, it should be a flashable .zip-file".
Do you by chance have the links to these files? I know I.C.S. is the latest one, but I'm happy with an old one if it is stable. Or if you have a custom ROM for the Xoom that would be great. I have a Samsung Captivate generation 1 that I use Firefly or Cognition on, along with the original stock ROM as backup just in case. Any links or files would be very cool!

Just to let you know your suggested thread "and maybe this [HOW TO] Motorola Xoom 2/Xyboard Root Method by Dan Rosenberg" does not work on my Xoom, but thanks for your suggestion. I'll try the other ones you put up, so far I have read every page on every linked thread I've come across. Lots and lots of helpful info on those as well as your pages. But if you can respond to my three earlier posts that would be helpful too. Starting to get information overload, haha.

Just to let you know your instructions worked like a charm! Went step-by-step and everything worked with no problems at all.
A few more question, yes I know MORE questions! haha. Where is the backup I make stored at? I would like to put it in my backups folder for the Xoom under its drive in my computer. Currently the 3G data service is still not working on it, but is recognizing AT&T network. It says "Mobile Network State: Disconnected" just like before and suggestions? Other then that I also still don't have access to the micro SD card in Android, but can access it in the Recovery.
I now think its time for a new platform, NO more Honeycomb 3.0.1! If you have any suggestions your more than welcome to say or suggest just like for the other posts!
llama-power You ROCK!
Time for me to get some sleep! Been reading and doing Xoom stuff for hours now. I'll be on later to night to read your posts!

Wow, wasn't aware of that. But these methods are really old. The method I mentioned is the universial root-method by solarnz which is supposed to work on every 'classic' xoom (despite the family edition with its locked bootloader)

I am using the team eos nightlies. Works really nicely except deep-sleep isn't working for me while wifi is enabled. Don't know if that is a rom-issue though, might be some app I use. Anyways, it's not really a problem to me, battery life is still more than sufficient.
You can get the team EOS nightlies for your xoom (MZ601 / umts_everest / EU-3G) from this thread. Download the latest nightly build and the latest G-Apps package (thats the Google Mail, Market, etc. apps) from the link in the same thread. Put those onto your sdcard and flash them from recovery. Wipe /data, /cache and dalvik-cache first, then install the rom, then the g-apps package and finally reboot. Do not reboot between the steps. When upgrading from one nightly to another omit wiping /data.

on your sdcard: $SDCARD$/clockworkmod/backup/$DATE_AND_TIME_OF_YOUR_BACKUP$. just copy that entire folder, it contains many .img-files (one for each partition) plus another file for checksums. You will need all those files for a restore. You may, however, rename the directory.

That was before I read your post. lol You might know about this, Do you know where the repository of updates are located for the Motorola Xoom 'classic' model? Just to let you know I'm using the ROM you recommended and I love it so far. As for the data service on the AT&T network it now works, after switching to the new ROM and it loaded the proper APN settings which were different from my phone. And of course with a new ROM the SD card now works as well. So my last and final question would be as stated before where can I find the oldest most up to date stock ROM?

well, there are a couple of sources for a stock rom. For one, your sd-card should contain one (I restored my backup yesterday and yes, it even reset the recovery to stock)...
Also, motorola offers some filesystem images at http://developer.motorola.com/products/software/, but you'll need to register with them to get to the download (should be free, though)
Finally, it might be desirable to have some .sbf-file for your xoom. Those can be flashed using a software called rsd lite, even when you aren't able to enter your recovery system. Doesn't always work, so it's not more than a Hail Mary move... However, Motorola does a lot to keep these files from floating around the web, so I won't be able to provide you with a link.
As always thanks for the keen insight. Just came across a few threads that perked my interest. Have you ever tried to get working SMS text messaging and voice calling on the Xoom? Since I'm using the SIM from my phone to do the data I was hoping there might be a way. I haven't done a lot of reading on this yet but you seem to know everything.

InfiniteImmortal said:

nope. The sim inside my xoom is on the same contract as the sim in my phone and I had to pick one that would receive texts. Naturally, since I always carry my phone, that's where the texts go, so the xoom wouldn't ever receive a text ever anyways. Voice calling is currently not possible on the xoom. So the only upside of that would be that I could send texts using the xoom, but that isn't so much better than texting on my Desire HD. Plus, that would tear apart the messaging threads between my phone and the xoom.
However, there's a thread in the xoom development section where flashable zip-files are published for every eos nightly, you should be able to just flash that over your rom and thus enable texting.
Actually, I might try that some time, but right now I should really learn for that exam on friday:-/

You certainly didn't give any information to help figure out what happened, but TWRP recovery gives an option to back up the EFS partition and if you are not using TWRP, I believe you can use a root explorer to manually copy the EFS folder to an SD card or your computer in case you need it. Of course this doesn't help you after the fact, but I think it is something everyone should do before they start flashing things. The same thing seems to happen early in the development of most phones, as soon as flashing starts, people run into this problem.
If anyone has better information on how to backup the EFS folder or how to preserve IMEI, please let everyone know.

AND IT IS USELESS unless you tell people what you did to lose it! Of course IMEI loss is possible. If you can count to 5 it should be obvious that something can be done to corrupt or erase the phones IMEI. Throwing it against the wall, dunking it in the toilet, flashing things that don't belong on your model of phone, etc... can all result in the loss of IMEI. That warning (and therefore this thread) is useless unless you tell what you did that caused it.

You can root after update but the boot loader will be locked so unless your OK with buggy safestrap I would just flash old and slows 4.3 rom until safestrap is straightened out.
---------- Post added at 07:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:35 PM ----------
well I guess I should say if you like stock (and don't mind the permanent locked bootloader) and all you want is root go for the update just make sure you only use saferoot to root your phone.
Same thing here, but...
I am brand new to this forum(as in this is my first post new) and I would like to ask for help with the same problem as the OP in this thread. I am on stock I535VRBMF1 but rooted and I would like to keep it that way. The only problems are:
I know nothing about how to refuse the OTA from Verizon or if this is even possible
I know very little of the "lingo" used on forums regarding Android phones (Flash this and ROM that and bootstrap this mean very little to me)
I don't know how long the phone will let me keep delaying the OTA update which it claims has already been downloaded and will be installed on the next boot cycle or when I let it. I have delayed it 2 times already.
And of course, I don't even know if this is the right place to ask for help. I am so used to being told to "go read the forum" and "use google; figure it out" that I am honestly not sure if I will get the same here. I am fairly quick to learn but this OTA just hit my phone today and I don't know if I even have time to learn.
I am open to suggestions and have already seriously considered trying to install a CyanogenMod on my S3, but I was "working up to it" and now I don't think I have any time left.
Can anyone advise me on how best to proceed to keep my bootloader from getting locked up permanently? I kinda like my phone the way it is, not that Verizon gives a rat's fart about that.
Any suggestions would be appreciated, if anyone has the time to coach a new guy, I would be forever grateful!

Use ES file explorer (download from playstore) and delete the file that already downloaded in this location /cache/fota
Next use Titanium backup to freeze the following files: otacerts.api, fwupdate.apk or fwupgrade.apk and sdm1.0.apk located here /system/app
Your phone will not update anymore. As long as you don't upgrade to 4.3, you're safe to keep your bootloader unlock or relock as you wish. If you update to 4.3 your bootloader is will locked permanently and no more custom rom/kernel or custom recovery for you. So don't update!!

OK, I was able to locate and delete the file in /cache/fota easily enough, but evidently there is some trick to using Titanium Backup that I am unaware of. I cannot seem to find any way of locating the files you listed at all. I tried refreshing the apps list(which apparently worked), but saw none of the .a[i nor .apk files listed in your reply. I see no way of navigating to the /system/app folder you mentioned. Maybe I need to pay for the donate version of TB to get that capability?
Thank you, by the way, much obliged.
Edit* OK, found "defrost" and found SDM1.0 and discovered that to use that feature I need to buy the donate version. Will do that and BRB. Still was unable to locate the other files, the fwupgrade/update etc. Only SDM. Edit2* OK, I got SDM frozen as instructed, still no luck finding those other apps from within TB.

How about use ES file explorer and navigate to /system/app and look for FWupgrade.apk (2 files same name). If you don't find them it's OK. Freeze SDM1.0 should prevent the software from downloading.

I found 2: one called "FWupgrade.apk" and the other was "FWupgrade.odex", both located using ESFE. Not to be completely dense, but what do I do with them now that I have located them? Is there a "freeze" function or similar in ESFE?
Also, no otacerts.api(nor .apk) anywhere.

SDM1.0.apk successfully frozen with TB.

Rename both to FWupgrade.apk.bak (add dot bak at the end).
Sorry, It should be otacerts.zip located in /etc/security - rename to otacerts.zip.bak

Done and done. A few false starts on my end because I didn't know I had to set my file system |,| as "writable" in the options on ESFE, but once I got that option selected, the rest was easy.
Two last things and I will leave you in peace: first, do you have a thread here on XDA that is like a "ROMs and MODs for Dummies" that I could actually learn things without needing my hand held as you have so patiently done just now? Second, is the "Thanks" button over there the correct protocol for giving credit where credit is due?
Thanks very much for taking the time to help me save my phone from the CML1 and bootloader death. I owe you one, really.:good::good::good:

You're welcom, anytime. No I don't have one for Dummies for this model, but I found that the only way it will stick to your brain where you learn by doing it, if you just read it won't stick. There're many threads in this forum (sticky) which you can read, but again I found that when you run into issue and actually got the answer and solved with your own hands then that's how you learn and don't be afraid to ask...Many of us here to help...with pleasure!!
Yes, the thanks button indicated that I did help you or at least trying to help you and you're appreciated. Happy on both side!

You're my hero, man, I really like that I'll be able to try out Cyanogen, but later when I am ready. All down to you.

Ok, that's what I figured. I think I am going to give Cyanogenmod a shot.
One more quick question. I used CASUAL to unlock bootloader/root. So I can use CLOCKWORKMOD to flash Cyanogenmod?
Sorry for all the silly Newb questions. This is the first time I've had to deal with a bootloader.
Thanks Again,

System Update won't let me downgrade or root.

I made the mistake of installing the most recent system update to change my baseband to G920VVRU2AOF1 and I tried re-rooting using ping-pong root and it won't let me install the su binary. I tried downgrading to OE2 using Odin, but that was a fail. Someone please help!!

It sounds like Verizon is up to their old tricks and preventing rollback by incrementing the bootloader again. Sadly you are stuck with no way to root if you can not flash back. All you can do is try submitting your info to the pingpong root thread and hope they can root it.

Not sure why you upgraded??
There is no root for the VZW version of the phone for that or newer versions now.
Pingpong will NEVER work again since its method of exploit was patched.
Most likey, another root method will come up but most likey will trip KNOX.
This is why they have been saying, DON'T UPGRADE OR TAKE A NEW OTA, but some people don't read or follow instructions. It is and has been on the pingpong root first post for some time.

Plus when the new version is rootable by a custom ROM you still won't be able to downgrade. That leaves the high possibility to loose root when something goes wrong and you have to Odin back to stock. Hopefully 5.1.x will be able to roll back, if not I won't upgrade.

Not sure why I upgraded either. Didn't research the consequences. It was an impulsive decision. I'm pissed I can't root my damn phone, can't even flash one of my backups.
I skim when I read the threads, and then my terrible memory gets me in situations like this.
Ugh, I need an App dev to make a new rooting app.
Just read the ping pong root thread... I'm a dumbass. :/

This upgrade s!#t is exactly that, [email protected]#t!! Don't upgrade. If they're not letting us downgrade with this upgrade, they're surely not going to let us downgrade with 5.1.x.
I'm still pissed. My battery is draining because of all the bloat that I can't manipulate if I were rooted. It's bugging the heck out of me not having full control of my phone.
Of course the upgrade wasn't good and why rooted users are not taking it.
You put you in the position you are in now. All the warnings were already there.

I'm the only one to blame, I'm already aware. Thanks! And I truly mean that.
Rule #1 is never ever take an OTA, just wait. I don't mean to throw salt on the wounds or anything but hopefully you'll save others from making the same mistake and I'm sure you won't make it again.
There's a lot of smart people working on this phone so don't give up hope just yet, you might catch a break. Heck, maybe a sock puppet will leak an unlocked bootloader like what happened with the S3. You never know.

Thanks, appreciate it. I guess this comes along with being a tester. I've got faith in the other developers who are working on it. I guess I'll just have to be patient.

Same thing happened to me, I stayed up all night trying to find a quick root, I dont care about messing with KNOX I just want my custom ROM back! But noooo there just isnt much variety I guess. Now I have to suffer because Verizon is lame.

I feel somewhat relieved that I'm not alone on this. I've literally been screwing with my phone, Odin, and whatnot for hours trying to find a way of having somewhat control over this phone... obviously, to no avail. Tired of 'permission DENIED/Failed' prompts.

Yea, Hopefully a fix soon, I looked around for boot unlockers as well, and did not find any. Man it wa easy with a nexus, they make it hard with Samsung!

It's not so much Samsung's fault, it's our damn carrier, Verizon that's making phone manipulating harder. I've had the S2, two S3's, and an S4, and I've never had issues with unlocking, rooting, abusing them until I switched to Verizon and got the S6. These damn OTA's are unnecessary.
Your so true
It's not even that, but the lack of control and uselessness of the updates frustrate me, and probably alot of other people. Verizon needs to step it up. I actually work for Verizon. And let me tell you. They are sneaky. So many people come in about bills being overpriced or something. It's awful. Anyways. I have great faith in out moddkng community and their will be a fix soon!
Hi everyone! I just rooted...super excited now! A few questions....
1. How do I disable update prompt?
2. Can I delete bloatware by using Root Explorer app or should I move them to data first then uninstall?
3. I am looking through different threads and it looks like we still can't flash much due to locked bootloader, correct? I am still on 1AOC3 haha afraid to touch anything
Thank you in advance! Loving S6!!!

Kinda curious... why did you post this to a thread about a problem "System Update won't let me downgrade or root." do you have that problem or are you just posting where ever feels good.
There are a lot of existing threads which cover what you are asking about.
Absolutely.... I posted because:
1. I searched and couldn't find a relevant thread on what I needed ...
2. I am 7 months pregnant and just love posting around random threads because it feels good.
Gee, thank you for being nice....
