Wondering if anyone else is experiencing the typical Android crackling while playing music on this phone? Using Poweramp and wondering if anyone found a fix? I read over on the international boards they fixed it with a kernel and tweaking the min cpu. The CPU doesn't respond to music when the screen is off.
It seems like something Samsung can easily fix.
do you mean the hissing? i hear that mostly when using Spotify.. only very little with Poweramp, but still noticeable compared to when i had the original Incredible. that phone's audio was quiet. i sure hope there's a fix.. i heard that the US versions' overall gain is slightly higher than the international version, hence why the US versions were tested to have a higher overall volume. so it does seem like it can be fixed via software tweak.

I have the cracking and popping issue as well. The international version has/had the issue and I believe it was resolved with a firmware update from Samsung. I read through the "Official Sound Quality Thread" in the GSIII I93000 forums and plenty of people mention this issue, rooted and stock.

Had this with my Droid 2. Pissed the S III still has it. that was one reason I upgraded, thinking dual core processor with 2 GIGS of RAM would be enough to play a friggin' mp3. It's like these phone companies don't even spend 5 minutes testing their product like an actual user would.

I've only owned two smartphones with the Droid Incredible being my first. This issue cripples my otherwise great experience with this phone. However since I read through that entire thread that I mentioned in my last post (more for any info on sound quality), I am confident this can be resolved via an update. Yeah it sucks but time will tell.

Hopefully.
I pre ordered my GS3. Received it on July 9th. I listen to Sirius all day long. The first time I set up my GS3 and turned on Sirius I had a popping and cracking noise (through my BT headphones). I lived with it for about 12 days. Also, when I connected it in my wife's car (BT) it did the same thing. So I called vzw and after going through about an hour of trying different tricks, they sent me a brand new phone. The new phone does NOT do it.
I also tried the headphones that came with my phone and didn't hear it. So for me it was strictly a BT issue. Funny thing though, my new GS3 doesn't get as good of a connection as the first one got. Using the same apps in the same location. So, depends on how bad it affects you. You might end up with a different issue. Oh, and this is my fourth android and I've never had an issue like that.

Same here. It's terrible when the phone is plugged into the car aux. Pops and glitches. Happens in several apps as well (not limited to one). I'm on Bean's R11 anyone know of a solution or source yet?
Its most likely because of the kernel (voltages, cpu freg). I had the same problem with imoseyon version 8 and 9 but not 5.
If your kernel can tweak voltages, increase the voltages have helped some peeps (1000 to 1150mV...or higher for lower frequencies).
The other option is to increase your lower CPU frequency until the crackle and pops go away (500 mhz or higher)
Third option is to use another kernel. I have not had this problem with ziggys kernel

Flash the beats by dre dsp or something, Mess with the equalizer. If you listen to music at work or home maybe get some external speakers. Monoprice.com has some cheap nice rechargeable ones.

Thanks for this info! I didn't think of it being the kernel as I hadn't seen any "sleeps of death."
I flashed to LK 0.5 and rode for 30 minutes listening to music the whole time. Not one pop or glitch. As the problem was decently intermittent, I'll try it out over the next couple of days. If I get any more pops or glitches, I'll be sure to post.
Thanks again for the input!

Sure man.
Never had any problems with imo.5. Should work out....
Just to follow up, running LK 0.5 fixed the issue. Also bumped the voltage higher on 0.9 and it also worked. Interestingly enough, I've been on cm10 lately with LK 1.0 and it hasn't had the same issue. Running at 925mv on 384mhz.

I had the same problem even before any ROMs/kernels.. finally called Verizon and got a replacement.. glad I did... music is normal now..
Guess we've been lucky - we play music from both of our stock Galaxy S IIIs in the car and I've recently been using headphones, but I haven't heard crackles or pops during playback.
- ooofest
I still have this problem regardless of kernel/voltage combo however it's only with PowerAmp and only with M4a files. My stock music player has zero audio popping/cracking on those same files which is so odd. I even took the same albums that glitch/pop on my GSIII and put them on my Droid Incredible and played them with PowerAmp. The result was no cracking/popping, which is exactly how audio on that phone has always performed-flawless.
For those still having or that have had this issue, could you post which music file extension had this issue? Example: mp3, AAC, Flac, m4a, etc.
Edit: It almost feels like I'm setting since I can use the stock player but I know PowerAmp (or other music players) offer a more complete listening experience. Maybe I'll try another go at tweaking voltages. Anyone know how they affect your phone btw?

Does anyone know of any apps to fix the low audio output for watching videos. Music and call colume is fine for me...but I can barely make out the words on any video I play...even with the SRS enchancments on...I guess I'm looking for something to boost the audio output using any video player. I've tried "equalizer" but it didn't work at all in boosting the volume. Thanks.
Same problem here..except that the music isn't quite loud enough to me. Same problem of equalizer being useless. I made a topic about this in the general forum, but nothing was solved unfortunately
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
How is equalizer useless? I get a fairly significant boost. I put 100 and 300 at 12dB, 1000 at 10dB, 3000 at 8, and 10000 at 4. Make sure you enable it by pressing the power icon and selecting equalizer.
I will give it another shot with the presets you mentioned tomorrow at the gym. That's when I tend to watch movies...and the noises around drown out the audio...keeping my fingers crossed
It's useless because any boost that it may give is leveled out by something...probably the htc sound driver

Well you must not be doing it right or your phone is defective.
Same issue with low audio here. It depends what video player I use, the same applies to GPS navigation Copilot has very low volume, Sygic is reasonably ok. All applications are at the maximum volume.
I think that this issue needs to be fixed with update from HTC or we will need some application to boost the volume without too much distortion.
Even when listening to music trough headphones, volume is not as loud as i would like to have very often. Far cry from my HTC Diamond which felt twice as loud compared to Sensation.
Because I have alot of AVI files...and for some reason the sound cuts out after like two minutes of watching a video with the stock player(def an issue that needs to be fixed...but maybe for another day)....I have been using the app "Arc Media" to watch them...I tried the presets this morning suggested by Karnovarian...and it seemed to help some? Maybe I was just sub consciously hoping it did...or maybe it was because I was a couple of treadmills down from the big fan then yesterday. Either way, it was still lower then I would have liked...def a difference from my mytouch 4g I gave away to a family member.
Any other luck with "equilaizer" or other apps?

Try reporting it in the Hellfire Phoenix thread and see what the dev says, I don't think one of those speakers is a mic, that's the way it was on the iPhone, but the mic seems to be just a little hole. Pretty sure those are both speakers.
I don't know though, I'm no expert. When you flashed, did you wipe data, cache, dalvik cache, and system beforehand? If not you were bound to have problems anyway, try that and reflash, don't restore any of your apps and see if the problem persists, if it does we can go two ways from here. First would be to see if you got a bad download, re download the zip and put it on your SD card, and make sure not to use CWM to transfer files, and also make sure to NVFlash CWM as just flashing it through ROM Manager is not safe.
If all else fails, use a different ROM and report the problem to the developer.
I've done all these steps numerous times and still same problem. Also I looked it up, checked with my friends who have the same phone, and talked to T-Mobile service reps and they all say it the the left one is the mic and that they aren't supposed to play together. But I would ask on the devs thread but I don't have that permission yet because I haven't made 10 posts yet. I know its the Tom because I followed the instructions exactly, I even waited 10 mins before moving of like he says to do. Also I went back to weapon g2x and the problem was solved.

Could you make a video of this?! That's actually kinda cool! Do you have any issues when using speakerphone?
I've used speaker phone maybe once. I'm on CM9 sk3. Using Power Amp I put my thumb over one speaker and that muffles the sound, move it over the other and the sound is muffled the same amount. If I were getting sound only from one at the most, and likely would get the opposite effect since the reverberance would be focused more, there would only be a slight difference when covering the non-functioning speaker.
Don't know what to say about a video, you won't see me covering the speakers, I have no webcam to record me.
Edit: also running Faux B4

Hi everyone,
Just wondering if anyone has found any solution to overcome the CM7/MIUI low microphone gain issue during voice calls?
The other party on the line barely can hear me during voice calls.
Have searched a lot and haven't found any fix except for the hit mute/unmute during call to temporary (only applies to that call) fix the problem.
Is there any other solution, like replacing system audio driver files from stock/other ROM to fix the low microphone gain issue permanently (well, at least till the next flashing)?
Never had any issue on stock Froyo or Gingerbread. However, not intent to return to stock due to this issue.
I'm on the July 15 baseband with Wind mobile in Canada. Currently using MIUI 2.3.2 with Faux123 048 kernel. Tried stock CM7, Trinity kernels, no go.
My wife has the same phone/system, however she is still on the June baseband. Same low Mic issue applies to hers as well.
Any input is greatly appreciated!

I would love for something as well, this issue seems to be out there for some others phones as well on CM7, i believe their intentions were to reduce background noise. Either way, if anyone steps in that'd be great. I have searched through build props, and system folders looking for anything that says "mic" I got nothing lol. If anyone has any thing they think I should search through I have time today so give me any ideas.

Couldn't agree more! I found as well that it has something to do with CM7's reduced microphone gain values to prevent voice distortion. Read about library file libaudio.so might as well "involved".
It is not that significant, however I'm using the phone frequently for voice calls and always mute/unmute is a little annoying.
I customized, fine tuned everything else to my needs and if this thing would finally get sorted as well i could lay back and fully enjoy my device (kidding, still would messing around with flashing around).

Part of this problem is the ROM and part of it is the kernel. CyanogenMod had this really bad at one point and they fixed it a little with a kernel tweak and then improved it a little more with a change in some of the audio drivers. So, it is hard to get it right. I have not really ever had this problem and I have been running MIUI GB based with the Trinity Kernel by Morfic (if that helps anyone).
Ya all of what I presumed it seems to be a hit or miss but it isn't just the g2x, which made me believe that it really is an issue even though people don't have it. I don't talk loud on the phone but maybe I need to start lol... either way willing to deal with it... p.s. I had the issue on all miui roms all kernels no matter what I tried.

could be a pandora/ICS issue or a pandora/one x issue, don't know which, though

It's well known if you do the advanced power menu mod you can see for yourself. For instance - the phone operates on single core only and that one core is downclocked to 1ghz max. Aggressive enough for you? Run a benchmark at 50% battery and then the same benchmark at 25% battery....
Huh that's kinda crazy to know thanks. Kinda piss me off though restricting our phones cores etc....
Beaups that's some crazy info but considering how fast this phone is, I won't worry about it. But yeah, the mem management is crazy.
I just tried out the iHeartRadio app which seems like Pandora with more features. So far the audio seems way better and it hasn't skipped or randomly paused a song yet and this is on data. This may be my new go to app.

Do all types of sound have the volume problem, Calls, Videos, youtube, Music? Does your ring tone come out at full volume?
Do you use google nav or any other similar app that outputs commands and such through the loud speaker? I ask because I read somewhere (maybe here on xda) that people were thinking it was maybe due to such apps.

Just my external speaker. And it affects everything. Music, videos and ringtones.

Hopefully it's just a software issue. This phone is flawless. I don't want to take a chance and return it for one that has more problems..

Ok so today I found out that the volume does not change with the last 3 or 4 pushes of the volume up button, it does not increase. Nor the same for lowering. It's like its stuck at 60% volume. What do I do..? Return it for a replacement or stick with it?

I have the same problem, only noticed it the other day when I decided to play some music the volume was really low on the external speaker so I decided to make a phone call and the volume seemed low in both the earpiece and external speaker so out of dumb luck I decided to restart the phone. Volume got louder in both but eventually got lower again after a few days. Also, noticed that the external volume doesn't seem to change with the last 2-3 clicks up or down.
Hoping this is a software issue since otherwise it works great, don't really want to return it and possibly get one with other issues.

This is the exact same problem I am having now.. I too noticed that the ear volume is low as well. I did restart the phone. It worked good for a day. Then same thing. I too am like you. Hopefully there is a software fix for it. I called at&t. They said That HTC handles the tech support for the HOX. Maybe you should call them too and complain. If they hear it from someone else, it might be good.

I did talk to HTC Tech Support and was told there's NO Issue with the volume on the device and was given a number for Repair which I haven't called yet.
And yes, it's last about a day then it gets lower.
it has to be a software issue, im experiancing the same thing. got a replacement today because of it, and when i was in calls it sounded like i was in a tunnel? no case on the phone.

I think it's funny when you call HTC, and they say they haven't heard of it. Lol.
Since this is my one issue, I will live with it. Don't want to take a chance for a replacement that might have more problems.

My first one x was a ht24 model that came with 1.73(I think that was the version correct me if I'm wrong) and had the same issues after about a month. My replacement is a ht23 with 1.85... I haven't noticed the issue with this phone but will look into it now and see if this one has it.
Sent from my factory HTC ONE XL unrooted and loving it..... kinda not really... I made a promise I wouldn't root :-(
I've noticed a very similar issue with my One X. I keep my phone at full volume and every once and a while the volume from the back speaker gets a bit quieter. Nothing seems to fix it, except for rebooting the phone.
