Need help finding a type of lockscreen app - General Questions and Answers

I'm looking for a lockscreen app that allows access to specific apps on my phone without actually unlocking my phone. For example, i want friends to be able to pickup my phone and call someone, select a new song, use the internet browser, but not actually unlock my phone. I tried a few different lockscreen apps and they all allow for the lockscreen shortcuts to specific apps, but if your phone is locked, u must unlock it before using the shortcuts. Ideally, the app im looking for would still have the same shortcuts as in widgetlocker, but wouldnt require lock, provide limited access to only the shortcut app, and then have the standard unlock screen as well. anything like this already out there? or is it possible to create something like this? Thanks!
I'm on droid bionic, gingerbread, rooted.

Don't know if this helps, but when I was on CyanogenMod 7.2, I enabled lockscreen gestures (can't remember exact menu steps). You can set up gestures like switch music tracks, open specified app, unlock, etc. This lockscreen is built into the ROM, though. Worked for me.

When you launched apps was the rest of the phone still locked? Most apps that have launch capabilities from the lock screen seem to lack security. after opening an app you can just use the home screen button or back button to get to the main menu.

Again, this app doesn't actually keep the phone locked. When u go to camera from the lock screen nothing stops you from simply clicking the homescreen button to unlock the phone entirely.

No, the phone is not secure after using lockscreen gestures to open an app. Sorry, I couldn't help. Hope you find what you're looking for.

[REQ] Notification Pull Down Power Buttons Ala Galaxy S

Hi I was watching a browser speed test video on androidcentral and they had a galaxy s phone and when they pulled down the notification bar at the top were a set of power buttons letting you turn on blue tooth, wifi or gps from any screen (really useful IMO)
So i ws wondering if this was part of touchwiz or an app or something we can port to the droid x. I find myself wantng to turn on wifi bt and gps alot in apps and ont want to go to the home screen to do it. i think this is so cool, anyone can elaborate?
thanks!
i believe it's part of touchwiz and it IS very handy. i don't use it all the time but it's a lot easier than finding the screen with the quick toggles.....if you're even using them.
Yea my friend has the one for T-mobile and i didnt' know it till i pulled down the notification bar, and I thought the same thing...sooo useful. I use my phone for navi a lot and it's annoying to go through screens to find the widget.
Quick Desk Beta
Check out the app Quick Desk Beta its essentially the same idea but instead of pulling your notification bar down you double press your home button and it pulls up a transparent screen that you can put any widgets on like wifi toggle or your music player. I used it all the time with my D1 when id be on a web page and forget to turn wifi on or want to listen to music while on the web but not want to go home and find the widgets then back to browser. I just got the DX and haven't tried it yet on it im still figuring out all these new moto blur things but i would think it should work with the DX. Hope that helps you out alittle

thanks i will check it out, but i do once in a while use the double tap of the home button for voice dial on my x, but that shouldnt b needed anymore once we get froyo and the new voice search app from google.
i still would like to have this in notification bar and wonder if it could be done as an app or as a theme mod or what. IF anyone has any ideas how this can be ported? maybe i can request a port in the DX android dev forum?
Yes a friend and my inlaws have the Galaxy and I would love to have something like this for the X.
Check out the app Quick Settings. Lets you put whatever settings in there you want. It's not as pretty, but really useful.

I would really love this too. I know the Galaxy S has it and certain ROMs have it but I'm not willing to root my DX quite yet.
i use quick settings as well, works really good.
Also you can download the app called Homesmack which can allow you to program the search hard button on the X to bring up the quick settings app. pretty convenient when i want to turn on wifi or bluetooth etc on the fly and saves space on home screens

It's awesome.

I use MySettings. It works very well.

[REQ] Lock Screen App

The power button on my N1 has been giving me fits, and given the number of people I've read about with "dead" power buttons, I think mine is going out so I'm trying to preserve it as long as possible.
I enabled trackball wake (using CM6) which takes care of 1/2 the equation, but I need a good lockscreen app (just something to make the phone go to sleep). I found one in the market called Lock Screen Enabler, but it's not a "true" lockscreen app and it's very buggy, causing all sorts of problems for me.
I've been a web developer for 8 years and recently got into Android development (which I hope to be doing full-time soon), so I thought I'd just code a quick app for personal use in 5 minutes.
The problem, however, is that the DEVICE_POWER permission is needed in order to call goToSleep() and from what I've read so far from other online posts, this permission is only granted to native system applications.
Since my phone is rooted, I even tried granting my application SU privileges, but that doesnt seem to work either.
So, my question boils down to how do I grant my application DEVICE_POWER permission? I figure if anyone out there knows the answer, it's going to be someone on XDA as this place is full of geniuses. Thanks in advance!!
UPDATE: I've attached the finished app. Made this for personal use but if anyone wants to use it they are welcome to. My only gripe about it right now is the "screen flicker" that happens when you launch it because it's trying to launch an app that immediately locks the screen and finishes itself. If I can figure out how to get the app to launch in a smaller window maybe I can minimize the size to reduce the screen flicker. But for now, this works and I can set it to launch when I click the clock on Fancy Widget, so I'm happy. Thanks again to everyone who offered answers to my questions. Just another reason why I love the Android development community!!

It seems that you'll need to add the application as a device administrator. There seems to be some decent information half way down this page under Device policy manager: Link.
I'd be interested in using this application as I can't change the icon of my previously mentioned widget.
Edit: More information here as well: Link.

I will probably still go ahead and create one. I like how with FancyWidget you can set it so clicking the clock will launch an app. Unfortunately it doesn't work with widgets, so I need an extra icon on my home screen just to lock it. If you have an icon you'd like me to use, feel free to share and I'll put it in
And thx for the info!!
I would be happy with any icon to be honest, I just don't like the lock screen widget one Good luck bud

Alright, I got it working, but there's one problem. It can't be uninstalled because it's currently a device admin. Same goes for that Lock Screen Widget I installed earlier.

Good call. Thx. However, I also came up with a work-around for ppl who are just as lazy as myself. There are 2 icons in the launcher. The first will lock the screen (once you enable the app as a device admin). The second will disable the app as a device admin, allowing you to uninstall at your will.
I really intended for this app to be for personal use, but if anyone wants it I'll put it up here for you to download. If you'd rather I remove the second launcher icon and just let you to disable it through Security settings, I will also do this (as really, I don't plan on uninstalling any time soon so this is fine for myself).
Thanks to everyone who helped out!!!

Great, works perfect on MIUI 0.9.30
Does the job perfectly! I especially like how it runs as an app so I can change the icon
You're a lifesaver, or should I say power button saver
Thanks so much.
I tried to develop something similar before but got stuck. Saved me some time!
Thanks for creating such useful app for my N1. My power bt is fine, but I would like to preserve it to powering up/down the phone.
BTW, I also downloaded Lock Screen Widget to test it out. Is it possible that you can make your app to shut off the screen smoother, like LSW? I like it you set it up as an app, which is super useful for me set up as a gesture swipe on my LauncherPro dock icons.
Thanks again and keep up your good work!
Thanks again, your app is really great. But could you add a option to map it to the search button (long press) please?
Thank you!

[Q] Skip homescreen?

Ok, I use WidgetLocker pretty much as my homescreen, and so I have a blank homescreen which I only use to access my app drawer if I need another app not on my lockscreen.
I am wondering if anyone knows if there is any way possible to skip the homescreen and just go straight to the app drawer.
Try looking into alternative launchers. vLauncher is probably what you want; it functions as solely an app drawer.
Seems kinda iPhone-ish.

No, not iphone-ish, it's because I use widgetlocker/lock menu AS my homescreen, and I wanted to unlock straight to app drawer because I really have no need of a launcher now. I only unlock if I need an app not accessible through my lockscreen. I'll check out that vlauncher.

VLauncher is your best bet, or else you'll have to make an application that does what you want.
Sent from my always stock, EC05 Epic 4G
Or you could use a shortcut/slider on Widgetlocker to open a Folder Organizer folder with all of your apps in it. I'm on CM7 & use the long press search to open my folder with all of my launchable apps, so it's like an app drawer anywhere.
Ok I've checked out vlauncher and that seems the best I can do for the time being, it serves it's purpose well enough. Thanks for the help guys!

[APP][4.0+] Settings Extended 1.3 (beta)

Hey guys!
I would like to share with you a new update of Settings Extended app before it is pushed to Google Play. The app allows to put setting toggles to the notification bar, it is very customizable and supports multiple rows of settings, if needed.
It would be nice to have your feedback on it. The app is optimized for phones and 7" tablets. Bigger tablets will be supported soon too.
Thanks!

Well, when you click it, it opens an activity displaying a torch (which isn't necessary at all). When you disable the torch then with your notification (to turn it off), it closes and then opens the Torch activity again.
It would be nice if:
1) Clicking the torch (in the torch activity) toggles the flashlight
OR
2) No Torch activity
Btw, do you have a working torch on all HTC devices? I am a developer too, and I can't get it to work on some of them.
If you want a code snippet or anything as an example I can send it to you.
I copied my flashlight code straight out of the AOKP ROM Source.

In all my apps I use self-written code for the flashlight. It looks very similar to the one in AOKP/packages_apps_Torch. On HTC phones there is built in flashlight which I start. I only use my flashlight in case standard flashlight app cannot be started. By the way, your flashlight doesn't work on Galaxy Nexus. It flashes once and then switches off immediately.

[app] mLauncher home replacement 2/28/16

This is mLauncher It's built for the nexus player and may work on other androidTV products. It lists all your apps including your sideloaded ones. Only has a couple features but here they are:
Display all your apps, set wallpaper, reboot, power off.
update: 2/28/16
changed the ui a little
DECREASED APP SIZE BY SEVERAL MBS!!!!!!
fixed the built in wallpaper switcher so that it displays all pictures in /sdcard/Pictures
Things to note:
Reboot and power off require root (Why haven't you done it yet?).
For the wallpapers function to work you have to sideload a wallpapers app on your NP.
To open quick settings press play on the remote Y on the game pad.

update 8/23/15
changed ui a little
added clock
fixed settings issue
Isn't it unnecessary to have a power off function on the Nexus Player? If it's an actual shut down rather than a sleep mode, then it would require the user to unplug power from their device and plug it back in before it could be used again.
I've got mine hooked up to a light switch so when I'm about to go to sleep and too lazy to get up it works great. Next day just flip the switch. I was experimenting with deep sleep but the way the stock Rom is set up to get it to work you have to remove daydream from the system and it takes a minute. I think on cm12 it would work. I could add the feature pretty easily. I was gonna add a shortcut to overscan and fix a small issue this week. Just let me know I'll put it in there.

Here's a beta release that fixes an issue I've been having with the app list not updating when you uninstall or install an app. It's a pretty dirty hack but seems to work okay. Remember this is beta and I'll be looking at different ways to implement it. So if your uninstalling and installing apps a lot give it a shot but if not pass on this.

Here's a beta release with new sleep function. It requires root access click it and screen goes into deep sleep. There's another way to do this without root but it requires you to change backdrop to none and it takes 10 seconds. Not very functional in my book. Everything else is working great. Thanks
