Tmobile Galaxy S 4g root issue... - General Questions and Answers

Hey there, Just want to thank everyone here in advance for any help and direction they give.
Got a few NOOBish question of course... but please understand ive used Google, and The search option on this forum (and others!!)
I got a Samsung Galaxy S. which im trying to root... These are my issues..
1. When phone turns on, it says VIBRANT, it clearly says Galaxy S across the back of the phone, But person who gave me the phone says its Galaxy S 4g..... I cant tell the difference of which/what phone it is.
2. I Got it a few days ago, so i updated to 2.2 froyo (via kies mini) after i connected it with with tmobile
3. Superoneclick was NOT working ,it kept hanging , and getting errors. Until a few minutes ago it told me it was successful with the root....
Then said it would send a superSU request of some sort to my phone. Then i get a "SuperSU binary needs to be updated,", then i recieve a "installation failed"
NOTE - SuperSU was installed PRIOR to root attempt.
4. Rom Manager said successful flash of CWM (i flashed the galaxy vibrant version) ..
Cant reboot into CWM recovery tho, it goes to Android System Recovery (3e)
5. I tried superSU after rebooting, and i get same error. Also when i type SU into terminal command, i still get "permission denied" (so makes me believe the phone never rooted thru superoneclick ? Obviously ? Or im wrong.... i dunno
... .Other notes, i tried z4root, by manually installing the apk via ASTRO manager, i clicked permanent root, it begins, it gives a notice of "shell being aquired" (i may be wrong on the wording.), then it vibrates the phone and shuts down. Any attempt to click z4root icon again causes a vibration of the phone. Thats all, app stays closed until reboot. Tried a few times, unsuccessfull.
I have checked a few of the other options, one was an update.zip file i found on here, but i got an error also. Then i see alot of forums mentioning flash back to 2.1 using obin, BUT most of those posts are from early 2011 ? Id assume 2.2 is capable of being rooted so much later.
So if any direction can be given, id apprecaite it alot guys n girls. For sure. Also, after root, if anyone knows of some good custom roms , or kernels.. (I do notice the lag on 2.2 BAD.)
I havent ever messed with kernels, but i did jus go thru issues rooting a metropcs wildfire S... OMG dont get me started on that thing of trash !!!....
Thanks again... ill await some responses as i search some more.

Ok so its a samsung vibrant galaxy s

Ok... weird, but i was going thru some apps, and seen CWM needed an update, i updated it , opened it , and was asked superuser permissions.... Then went to terminal, and SU, and got the # sign. So it rooted without having to go back to 2.1 with odin.
So i am rooted now.... If anyone knows of good roms / kernels (im 100 percent unfamiliar with kernels... Roms,, ehhhhhh), for this now ?
Thanks again.

ok.. guess noone can help ?

Did i post wrong ? I mean i did clearly state that i used the search options, and i am doing my own homework on the issue.. but still remain stuck on some of the issues at hand...
anyone ?

You likely would have a lot more responses had this been posted in the section for the device. There are a number of differences in the vibrant and the gs4g. If you still are not certain which you have, you could quickly tell by the battery... the s4g is larger. Look at the amount, google it.
Once you have the correct model, if you are still having issues go post in that section. From reading your posts, it sounded to me like you had it fixed and were now just looking for the best ROM to flash.

noob question

Hey guys, im sorry to start a thread. Ive looked everywhere for a solution but i cant find one. I rooted my phone yesterday and even managed to install some new roms. One of those rooms seems to have disabled my market completely. I was not happy with the recovery program i initially installed, so i unrooted back to 1.5 again. I did not think that my market would be disabled after the sapp.nbh, but it is. I want to re-root it, but i can not download a manager off the market. Is there anything I can do? or am i stuck with 1.5 forever. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.
that definitely should not have happened
must have been a problem with the rom
I've been running rooted roms since last summer without any problems
What message is the market giving you when you try to open it up? Maybe there is something wrong with the sign in. One thing that you can try though is a different sappimg file to unroot it back to 1.5.
Hope this helps!

[Q] Rooting New Galaxy S 4g

Hello All,
I picked up a Samsung Galaxy S 4g yesterday and I have had the intention of rooting it and installing a custom Rom from the get go. Unfortunately I am having problems getting rooted.
I have tried to use the One Click Root, but without much luck. I get the update.zip installed and it reboots into recovery mode, but on 'reinstall packages' it fails with a signature warning. I supect this is because I have the 3e recovery. I have seen some suggestions for other methods but they seem to but somewhat old or unsupported. I would love to get some advice on this.
Details are as follows
Model: SGH-T959V
Firmware: 2.2.1
Basband: T959VUVKB5
Kernel: 2.6.32.9
Build: Froyo.VUVKB5
If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be very helpful.
*sigh* How many times are we going to see this?

I am not terribly sure what you mean by linking. I did actually read this thread along with a ton of others. It seems that it was successful for someone, thats great, but it wasn't for me.
I have followed the instructions, drivers are installed, sd card unmounted, usb debug mode etc. If there is something in that thread that is helpful please point it out. I would love to get this phone rooted.
Happened to me before with rage option on Super One Click Root, what I done was to unroot using same method and restart then use the first option on Super one click and not the rage one then reboot, everything is ok at present with no problem. Hope this help?
It can't hurt to try. I will give it a shot tonight.
Just for other folks I have confirmed that the z4root option does not work on this model. You get through acquiring shell, get a couple of random vibrations and then z4root fails with no root actually happening. There are a couple of other reports of the same result out.
I will try the option the post above suggests and I will see if there are some other approaches to try.
Moved to general as not android development
Just for posterity. One click root 1.7 works just fine as long as you are not trying to do it from a vmware vm.

[Q] Samsung Epic 4G Touch Root Problems! Any Help?

As the title says, I have the Samsung Galaxy SII Sprint's variation. I rooted my phone when it was on the version before Gingerbread EL29. I used the SuperOneClick method to root my phone and after doing that, 'Superuser' was installed on my phone. Everything was going fine until I accidentally updated my phone to Gingerbread 2.3.6 EL29 via Sprint's over-the-air update. I know it sounds dumb from me but I really knew that if I updated my phone I could mess up my root privileges, but that pop up update was showing up each 5 minutes, that in one of them I accidentally pressed 'install'. Now I have tried to unroot my phone with SuperOneClick but 'Superuser' is still there and when I access an app that requires root privileges like 'Wireless Tether' it says that my phone is not rooted. I also tried to do a factory reset and root again with 'SuperOneClick' but it freezes up (I guess it's because 'Superuser' is still there?) I was also thinking on installing a rooted rom but I don't know if I can install custom roms (I don't know if I have CWM and if it will mess up because I'm not rooted?..) Right now I just want to get the latest rooted stable release possible.. Sorry for extending myself but I wanted to give all the important details as possible as I am new in handling root phones and also in this forum. I will appreciate any help, thanks!
-James E.
Btw you might want to ask in the epic forums. You will get slot more help. I would use sfhub el29 oneclick

Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate

I purchased a Galaxy Exhilarate last weekend. This phone was just released by AT&T a few days before that. After playing around with the phone, and doing some reading, I can admit, they've done a decent job. Of course, it comes with all the standard "bloat" that all the phones have, but it also has a few nice things too.
For one, reading using the Barnes & Noble Nook App is not bad, esp. since I own a Nook. To read the same books I'm reading on my nook, just tell the nook app the same account you use for your nook, and all your purchased content (including games) will be available. Of course, my Nook is hacked with Android, and I can do far more than just read books on it. Anyway, I'm off topic here.
After toying around with the phone, I decided it was time to delve deeper into it, and look at rooting it. I did a quick search, and, well, there's NOTHING out there on how to root it!
I also wasn't sure how to get into the Android Restore mode.
After looking into it, I figured it out on my own
1) Power down the phone
2) Push & hold both the UP and DOWN volume buttons and then push and hold the Power button.
3) "Samsung" will come up, and then disappear. AS SOON as it disappears, release all the buttons
The phone will now boot into the Android System Recovery mode.
As I'm just getting started, I'll post more when I get to that point!
To play around (if you just happen to own this phone), you should read the entire post. You can also go straight to my guide on how to root using a workaround I developed with Shaggypenquin and j3r3goss. Here's the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29566997
If you are an XDA Admin, would like to see this get it's own forum with the other Samsung phones! Thanks!
Rooting the Galaxy Exhilarate
Hello , I'm new to the forum , but I also purchased the Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate recently. I'm sad to say that although you SHOULD be able to "root the phone using a standard technique for Android 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread" , I cannot. I follow the procedure for rooting Androids 2.3.3 to 2.3.7 Gingerbread (using the attached file that you provided), and it gave me a message stating "E:failed to verify whole-file signature. (new line) E:signature verification failed". I'm a noob when it comes to Androids to know what this message means, however I'm hoping you can provide me with some much needed assistance
P.S. I've tried to research around, very thoroughly in my opinion, so this is a last resort of sorts haha
-Thank you in advance!
DaveeG: I too have run into the issue you are talking about. I haven't had time to try to figure out the workaround yet. Check back in early July... Maybe I'll figure something out, or someone else will, and they'll post here.

Alright , thanks. Somebody help me pleasee ,
anyway you could do a system dump? If so, I could probably get a solution for everyone.
Excuse my ignorance , but what exactly do you mean by a system dump? sounds like a reset of some kind,

gicuenitro: I'll see if I can get one done. It may be a few days. Next week I start vacation, so I plan to spend a day just messing around w/ this.
You cant apply unofficial updates through the stock recovery as it will check to see if it is signed by samsung. Either patch the recovery or find another way to root.

It would be alot easier to get around the e-signature if CWM Recovery Was Flashed to the phone. I will be looking for the CWM Recovery Version That will best suit this situation. I used CWM Recovery to flash Custom ROMS to my SGH-i717 (AT&T Galaxy Note) As Soon as i Find that version I will post it. be patient Rome wasnt built in a day and i would hate for your phone to become one expensive paper weight lol:good:

I have used CWM before. I look forward to your solution. I think the Exhilarate is similar to another AT&T phone that may already be rooted, but I don't know if one phone's hack/root will apply to another, similar phone.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
Made several unsuccessful attempts to root this device with SuperOneClick v2.3.3 and DooMLoRD_v4_ROOT for Skyrocket (i727). On a side note, rebooting restores all uninstalled at&t bloatware.
I got one of these by chance and was wondering if anyone has tried Odin to push cwm? Has anyone found anything on this? I can help....just need to know where to start.

Flash a kernel with a patched recovery then install the su files from the recovery.
That's how antsm did it for the galaxy ace 2, try give him a message and see if he'll whip up a quick kernel for you. I would give it a go but I don't have a Linux machine right now. Remember to ask him politely though.

I haven't tried yet. This is my first Sammy phone so I've just been reading rooting guides for similar phones.

If someone could get a system dump I would greatly appreciate it. I somehow manage to screw up the stock recovery and now my capacitive buttons only respond once or twice after booting and then they appear to lock up. Attempted to do a full restore through Kies with no success. Chatted with samsung and they say at this time there is no way to do a full reinstall.
Still unable to root/sysdump
Ok, been trying to get root access and/or do a system dump on the phone.
So far, no luck.
However, I have been able to get the phone to dump its system properties...
Here they are (hopefully, this can be used as a start?):
<Rest of post deleted here due to size/length of post (and not needed)>
I used the ADB to get shell access to the phone. When I type the command "su dd if=/dev/block/stl6 of=/sdcard/factoryfs.rfs" I get "su: permission denied".
So, assuming "su" is superuser, how do I get that if my phone isn't rooted???
Thanks for any help you can give.

Ok, I've got my phone to boot into "ODIN Mode". I downloaded ODIN3 1.85. I've opened it up. Not sure I want to push something to the phone just yet (sure as hell don't want to brick it). ...
Suggestions...?

I pushed the skyrocket cwm and my phone did not like it. I think cwm is actually trying to come up but it's ugly and not usable. The phone still boots but the capacitive buttons are locking up. I have since pushed the s3 stock att recovery and the s3 cwm with no success. I'm using my htc aria because the phone is mostly useless without the buttons. I'm up to custom binary flash count 3 now. I will probably get a chance to play more this weekend but i just started a 5 wk probability and statistics class and a history class that are eating all my time during the week.

I think you may have gone the wrong way about this - however, I am working on a manual root for the phone - and I think I may have something soon!
If/when I get rooted, I'll make sure I post the original img so you can at least recover your phone back to stock.

I was originally trying to root to be able to install cwn through rom manager, but since that didn'tr work I was trying to push CWM thru Odin so I could do a a nadroid and then try to flash superuser and busybox through cwm. I admit I don't know much about it.This is only my second android phone and the first time I've had a backup if I mess something up

[Q] Root/Custom Rom Help LG LW690 (Optimus C)

Hello,
I am new to the forums and android in general. Anyways, I am wondering if any one could advise me on the best steps to root and update my oldish android phone. It is currently on android 2.2.1 and has no support for 2.2.3 which is why I believe I need a custom rom.. I have looked thru numerous threads and sources but have yet to find a method i fully understand and trust, as i hear it.. you guys are very helpful and i am hoping that is true cause im about to pull my hair out at this point
Thanks in advance for any help, its appreciated very much.
Its great that you are showing interest in this. (Edited out, the device is stated in title xD).
Rooting shouldn't be as hard at installing a custom ROM. Older devices are rarely supported nowadays, unless it's really popular like the HTC Wildfire or something.
The best way to root your Optimus C is by using GingerBreak. Many users that have your device use that.
Info on other useful guides (rooting, cwm,ROMs) go here - http://androidforums.com/optimus-c-all-things-root/

Thanks for taking the time to repond/help. Anyways, after some more research I think I found a easy root solution.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13086954
This method seems both easy and very sraight forward. Could any one please confirm? Id just like a lil insight before taking the plunge. lol
Note* I would link the posts stating this does work to gain root access but i cant post outside links untill i have 10 posts on XDA.
Don't worry, the root method should work just fine.

Ok, got it rooted
The next step would be to download rom manager and make a custom recovery using clockworkmod?
Btw~ incase someone is confused in the future. The root procedure was a few simple steps.
Before doing these steps make sure usb debugging is active. Also temp disable your anti-virus as it will flag the apk as a virus, This is a false positive.
1. Download the file from the first post in the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1049944. (the easy way for me "since i don't have a usb cord" was to click the QR code link on the first post and scan it with one of the many free qr scanner apps from the play store.
2. Navigate to the download and install the APK.
3. Open Gingerbreak.
4. Click "root" and wait for your device to reboot. Thats all  "if the process takes more then ten minutes reboot your device and run it again"
5. You can go ahead and uinstall/delete the apk once you have sucessfully rooted.
The next step would be to download and install the devices custom recovery.
Don't just install any, again go to that site I had provided you with earlier that have the stock and custom .imgs with steps on how to install it.

Ok so.. I have a problem, I was about to setup a custom recovery when all of a sudden Super User decided to update and now im a little lost. I have still have root acess and all of my root only apps are working perfectly fine. but every time i use a root app or reboot my phone since the SU update i get a message saying my binary files need to be updated. I try to update them and it fails every time, I have looked though a few threads and the only fix i could find was to use busybox installer. But.. busybox will not install on my device. How do i go forward with this? I don't want to mess anything up.. specially since i just thought i had it all figured out. :crying:
Nevermind, I guess i found a decent work around, I uninstalled the update and forced it to not auto update. I don't know if this is a bad practice but it seems to have solved the issue.
I like LG' phones. I am using LG P500 and very like...:good::angel:
