Is there an app to track which ROMS we use? - Android Apps and Games

Is there an app to track which ROMS we use?
ROMS are not apps, so not in Google Play, so... no download counts, no user ratings, no list of ternding, etc.
Basically no stats and time consuming to try and test them all.
I thought there was an app for everything! But is there one for ROMS?

That is mostly due to the fact that you can only judge a rom based on how it runs on your device. The same rom may not run the same way evemnif on the same device. Running a custom rom is not for everyone as it takes alot of time and a big learning curve.

Thanks. In many ways the same applies to Apps, and that does not stop Google from having a user feedback and an informative system for what works and what doesn't (on the whole).
Is there is no app to track this, maybe XDA could look at it.

[Q] Camera not working on certain ROMs can any one help me?

I am not new to the android world of flashing. I recently attempted to flash tbaldens ROMs as well as the virtuous ROM, the ROMs do not allow my camera to work. The camera works on the stock rooted ROM as well as bulletproof 1.1 and undeadk9s ROMs. Any insight would be appreciated. I am truly going to sell this phone to the highest bidder on ebay unless I can fix my camera dilema. According to what tbalden said the camera drivers don't initiate properly, I would love to use ICS on this phone but no camera on basically any ROM over android 2.3.5 is a big deal breaker.

Well, until someone sits down and makes it work, it's not going to.
Obviously there is no problem with your camera itself, as it sounds like it's fine on software that is or is close to what it came with.
Anything else is a bonus granted by the time and effort dumped into these projects by people in their spare time.
You've identified a problem you wish to overcome - using the device with software released long after the device itself, to which the manufacturer and carrier have not chosen to update to.
The solution has yet to be developed - every person working on it brings us closer to having it.

Get the MIUI port from sensation, that rom is the best so far. MIUI is so sick, and even if you don't like MIUI, I'd say it's the most stable rom for our phone yet

The port isn't ICS plus I loathe the UI with a passion but thanks anyway. Odds are the camera still wouldn't work for me.
No one has any insight as to why this happens? I can't use the camera on many ROMs which limits me even more considering we hardly have a good choice in ROMs anyway.

Honestly, you would either have to take that up with the author of the ROM and/or work on a resolution yourself.
If it's an ICS ROM you are having issues with, remember, HTC hasn't released any ICS code for this device, so anything you get your hands on is most likely a works-in-progress given the state of ICS development.
There is a lot of positive advancement towards the ICS software, but it's a huge undertaking and most of it has to be hacked apart and rebuilt for the device. There is only so much any individual person can do at once, and ICS is a gigantic project to tackle.
We are all working on this in our spare time, around work, spending time with significant others and families/friends...these are all projects of donated time because we enjoy doing it... but it is at the expense of something else we could be doing with our lives.
The more people that pitch in and help, the more quickly we will all have what we want. What one person wants may not necessarily be what another wants, but once it's made and shared with the community it's there for others to use and build on.
Maybe talk to the author of the ROM you are having an issue with, and if they can't get to it right now because they have a pretty big list of things to do in their project already, see what help they can give towards you working out a solution. They might be able to point you in the direction of what's wrong, or what they think may not be working right so you can help research and devise a solution.
I have spoken to the author, thing is its not just ICS ROMs. Its any sensation port from what I can gather so far. I literally have only 3 ROMs to chose from that have the cam working. I would love to be pointed in the right direction but all I got told is its a problem with camera driver. What I don't get is if its such a problem why is it ONLY MY phone. Its not like they shipped one phone with a locked camera driver.. what are the odds of that? What is different in my board? Or is it just a random fluke? Also what would need to be done to get the drivers to work? I have experience building from source but none working on ports.

did you clear dalvik cache when flashing the rom?
did you wait five minutes after flash and 1st boot, then reboot?
I am not having problems with the camera on latest pyroice no-sense.
Third party camera apps don't work, yes I did wipe in fact I did everything I can do to possible eliminate user error. Either the stock camera app won't show a preview or it just won't even open. Trust me when I say I'm FAR from a noob and the only reason I'm posting is because I have done everything possible I know of.
Fresh install of any ICS ROM and trying to open the camera app results in the app just closing no FC no errors NOTHING!. Using virtuous unity, I just can open the camera app and I can't see a preview nor does the cam app take pix.

dalvik cache needs to be wiped in advanced settings in recovery, and standard wipe (factory restore & delete user files) will not wipe dalvik, and I had problems when I did not specifically wipe it, so I was just checking.
also, you are not restoring apps using titanium backup? that is known to cause problems.
did you test camera on 1st install before installing any other apps. perhaps the most likely reason would be if there was some app installed on your phone that is overwriting a critical file and that is the reason for the problem with the camera.
just some suggestions that might narrow the search and help solve the problem.

I was hoping for an easy fix, but sounds like its gonna be a tough one.
Oddest piece of the puzzle is that it seems like something unique to your phone, as the error is not reported (as far as I know) by anyone else.
If it is bugging on fresh install with no other apps, well, that is a puzzle, and I'm out of suggestions. I hope you can get it figured out, the phone is great with these new roms, but I understand that it is a lot less useful without a working camera.
I have done a warranty return on a t-mobile MTS4 that had been rooted and s-off. just reflashed to stock before return, and there was no problems from there side. on the other hand, since your phone is working when flashed to stock, they might not be happy with the return...
Its such a puzzle, I will just eventually use this until it falls apart. I am partially disabled n am always dropping my phone, funny thing is I didn't start dropping this phone until after about 3 weeks of realizing the camera don't work on certain ROMs so I know the falls didn't do it. I'm already on my 2nd device on less then a year with my two year contract... After this one goes I'm just going to switch devices.
My main concern is for others out there who may have this problem and don't even know it yet because they are still on stock ROMs. If I get the money to replace this device soon I will just donate it to a dev who knows what to look for better then me.

Is it really worth it?

First of all, I would like to thank the devs for all their hard work and dedication. But I really would like some honest insight into this whole custom rom thing.
After reading just about every post on every thread in the development section, I have noticed that a lot of people have problems with the roms (some minor, some major) in one fashion or another. It seems that there is no rom that technically works 100% perfect. But this is not a complaint on my end.
What I want to know is, do all of you just love tinkering with your phone that much that you will reflash new roms every week, (or less) look for workarounds and fixes, and put up with glitches?
It was fun for me for about a week, but quickly got old. I was looking for that magical rom that would change my life, but never happened. Regardless of whether I was using custom or stock, I use my phone in exactly the same way all day. So I had to ask myself if the constant flashing and fixing was worth it just to find a perfect solution that doesn't exist to begin with.
I mean, don't people just want to use their phones instead of constantly trying new things? Or is it just a way of life now, and you don't care how much time you spend. Is flashing new roms and fixing things the purpose of having your phone? I thought it was to make phone calls and everything else we do day to day.
Maybe you could enlighten me as to why you are a flashoholic, and not a regular phone user.
And one other thing. If you are into tinkering so much, why not set aside a spare hard drive or partition on your computer and install some linux distros? The customization possibilties are literally endless with linux on the desktop, and can provide years of entertainment and challenges. It just seems odd that a bunch of pc users would use their (linux based) phones as a means to experiment, but not their desktop/laptop pc's. And yes, I realize some of you might use linux.
Sorry for the length, but just would like some insight into these questions.

This is the easiest way to explain this without going into a bunch of detail. Customizing my phone is one of my hobbies. It is kind of the same thing as to when you buy a house or a car and want to fix it up or change things on it. When you change things on it, it makes it yours and nobody has one exactly the same.
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
Wolfen - We all have a choice to accept things as they are, or to expect things to be a certain way and be disillusioned when they are not, or to take direct action through our own works to effect change.
Most people who've been here a while are here because they like to tinker with their phones. Those who provide custom roms are not paid for their work. Some accept donations, but there is no requirement for anyone to pay up front. If you do not understand or appreciate what people do here you are free to choose another path.
I do hope you stick around though, or at least check in every once and a while. I think there are some good things coming. For example, entropy512 just released a kernel that allows HDMI to work. The Collective, bigfau, qkstr and others continue to release stock-based roms that focus on improving stability, performance, features, and customizability.
Custom roms will never be 100% bug free. This is due to the nature of the beast. Only you can make the choice on if it is worth it. Custom roms are not for everyone. To be honest its not for most people. The ones that will use custom roms are those that enjoy troubleshooting and helping to find and fix bugs.
Now as per the nature of the site you will most likely get a ton of people that say it is very worth it. While they are not wrong, they are also not right. It is all up to you.

[Q] Best Stock Android ROM?

Hey guys, apologies if I'm not posting in the best possible section for this, but I've been wondering for a while.
I've been getting sick of TouchWiz. Not just the launcher (I got Nova the moment I could, and am still using it) but the customizations of the phone itself and the small annoyances that Verizon baked in, such as the always-on WiFi indicator. I've been debating going to a stock ROM for a long while, and I've made my decision to break free of the ridiculousness that is Verizon and Samsung's customizations, as they've made the phone slow, and I know it can run much better than it is right now. So here's my question:
What's the best stock Android ROM currently? I'd preferably want one that is
Being currently developed. I don't want a ROM with a lazy developer. (If ROMs are a few weeks late, I won't mind, but I don't want to be waiting forever to get the next .1 added to my version number.
Quick and minimal. Literally as close to stock Android as it can be. If there are things that need to be kept, such as the camera app, that's fine, but I'd like to rid myself of as much TouchWiz as I can.
Free of bugs. I know most ROMs aren't perfect. I'm fine with that. I need something to work as a stable daily driver, and I don't much care to hop on the next nightly I can find.
On the latest version of Android without bugs.
I have experience with rooting and flashing with Odin, but I haven't done it in a while, so if the method to root+flash is more than a one click or a couple of console commands, I'd like to be guided if possible. I have no want to brick my phone, as you can well imagine.
Also, if there's a list of stock ROMs for the Verizon GS3, I'd like to be pointed in that direction, if possible.
Thanks! I hope to hear from someone soon!
Not being rude but, if you were to take the amount of time you put into making this thread and actually looked throughout the forums you'd find a thread already on this or get this, you could go to the development threads and read the ops. Mind blowing right?

Yeah, I know that. I could surf through bunches of ROMs, but I posted here as a question for community feedback on a bunch of them, that might help me make a decision.
Is asking for opinions and information less efficient than going through a list that's new territory for me?
I'm not stupid. I want advice and info from experienced users. Is that so hard to ask for?
Great thread idea. Surprised no one else has done this.

You described most of the roms that this phone has. Most give you an option to keep phone stock, Based on each thread, they're all amazing to use daily. As far as being on the latest version you simply have to look at the thread title.
You'll definitely need to go through several threads and try them out to see what suits your needs best. It's not an easy task when there are several awesome developers on your phone!

Thanks! Didn't know I was delving into such a huge bunch of ROMs. Back in the X and Droid 2 days, I had to surf through a bunch of different ROMs that really weren't reliable. I know things have changed, but this seems pretty extreme.
If you know of any, which ones have you heard are the, well, "god-tier" ROMs? Any developers who are notable that I should check first?
Thanks again!
I wouldn't judge god tier roms, I'm happy to say that all of these roms on this device forum are just as reliable, it's only a matter of how your phone plays with the rom you end up choosing, since all devices play differently. Even if these threads are meant to be locked since they bring nothing but just opinions.

Well, I was just looking for information on the best Roms for the GS3, but since all of the Roms are apparently great, could you list a couple? Even if they aren't "god-tier", are there at least some that fit the qualifications and are well known? I know there's not going to be a "These are the best ROMs ever" list, but are there a few that are highly maintained, or some developers that are well known besides CyanogenMod?
Sorry if I seem new to this whole thing.
Barebones stock is pretty much all I've been for almost a month, and at this point I'm not ashamed to admit I'm a flashaholic, but i only flash his updates (andybones) and the great news is that he keeps the rom consistent in updates and solid Smoot performance.
Also hypredrive just got updated to rls 15 and that's another amazing rom that gets a monthly update and its worth the wait and a very determined developer.

You should give every rom a go, but you can start testing with Synergy. Try it for a week, and then test another rom
Sorry, "Best" is a term that is subjective and can only be defined by the individual, the post above/before me is a good idea.

Recommendation for a Newb

Hi there I am a newb to ROMs and I have what I think is an easy question.
My girlfriend has a Nexus S which has gotten incredibly slow lately.
There dont seem to be extra apps running on the phone (i tried uninstalling almost all of the apps) so I assume I need to try a different rom/kernel (everything is stock of whatever was pushed to her phone).
I dont think she would care about extra features but would just want it reliable.
I really dont know what to install. If it should be some paired down rom/kernel, A new one, or older one.
I imagine a newer kernel (i think they have trim??) and paired down would be better.
Although using and old build for reliability/speed would be completely acceptable too.
Are there any recommendations? I am pretty lost.
Thank you so much!
Using Slim atm
Pretty smooth if you don't enable google now.
However the 512mb ram is really killing the phone, takes ages to load apps let alone multitask

Greenify looks interesting.
do the themes affect speed/ram usage?

Themes/theming can affect speed/ram.. If you want a rom to stand the test of time; MDO, Rasbeanjelly, Hellybean, Slimbean (4.1.2).. If you upgrade past this, the 4.2.2's are laggy and ram hungry.. 4.2.2's are also not as stable. Jellyshot and Rasbeanjelly are the most stable/ram friendly 4.2's... Use stable/or stock kernels and don't overclock!!! Once you set up the phone, it's a phone, all the "settings" don't make the phone any more or less a phone...
Sorry folks, recommendation for best rom threads get closed, why? because history shows that almost all of them become arguments over what rom is "better" and essentially, that is something that can only be determined by individual users.
Members are expected to read the thread in development to determine what is "best" for them.

I would like to know is there any other rom wich is way better or is there any rom wich is like the "best" out of all? i would really like to know so that i can install it on my g2 to try it out thanks...
Your question will not get nice answers. ROMS are like women, all different, all alluring, but with different features that appeal to us differently. There is no best rom; look at the threads of the main roms out there, and you'll have to decide for yourself.
I've been on cloudy 2.2 for a long time, and my battery life is amazingly good. I don't play games, but I use it normally (emails, sms, web searching). Perhaps you have wakelocks and apps that are draining your battery (FB app, groupon, location, Bluetooth, twitter, etc). Those types of apps are constantly listening and connecting to servers.

ok thanks for the reply i understand you, but right now im kind of stuck and "soft bricked"
You could flash cloudys latest, 3.3. Cloudy is a great developer and dont get sour on his rom becausenof your situation.
Or flash your current rom again; start over and flash it again. Roms can behave funky, and refreshing is not a bad thing to do. Clean up your apps after, and give the rom a day or so to settle down.
