Hello ,
I have a problem with my optimus 3d p920 .
It seems to get a very slow GPS fix .
I been searching alot but not realy found a fix .
Can someone point me in the right direction ?
i am on XPlay3D v2.0 rom with baseband l6260_modem_sic_01.1042.00 accoring to system info of phone
.
Im having the same issue
I think it depends on the ROM settings and maybe even the build.prop file in /system/
I am using Prometheus ROM v1.4 with stock+ kernal and my GPS locks VERY quickly. I usually leave GPS enabled anyways which probably helps once its locked the first time.
I have been on other roms that takes FOREVER to lock onto GPS as well and if I recall correctly, I think some of Meemos roms had that problemf or me too.
Sorry I can't be much more help than that. My suggestion: try other roms and see how they do.

What I use and I must say with success is a little apk called GPSFix.I start gps module from drawer, then start the gps fix, wait for about three secs till morr sattelites are shown then start my navigation program. Doing so in about 20 secs maximum, usually I get a 12 secs, I do get a fix.Anyway for me it works.

Where do you get that ?
Check your NTP setting in:
system/etc/gps.conf
In the line:
NTP_SERVER=(you must set your closest location)
And change SUPL_PORT= to 7275
Search for your closest NTP server in www.pool.ntp.org
I found out that the GPS fix speed is ROM and/or settings dependent. For example, all the Froyo stock roms were much faster to get a GPS fix (10-20sec) comparing with the Gingerbread stock roms (45-90sec). The same applies to custom roms as well.
I would not recommend getting the GpsFix as suggested because it comes with tones of spam as you can see on the comments. Instead you could use the much more popular and with many additional features GPS Status & Toolbox.
Also if you don't want to change your NTP settings manually as suggested above, you could do it with an app called FasterFix.
I have to say though that even if the above apps could help decrease a few seconds from your GPS fix time, the most important for that is the ROM that you are using. I think it's unacceptable for LG to break the GPS fix on GB roms (together with other things) while it was working perfectly fast on Froyo.
I just made a comparison of O3D with the 6 times cheaper ZTE Blade with the app GPS Status. For O3D it took 75sec to fix and it fixed on 5/7 satellites. ZTE Blade made a fix in 11sec on 12/13 satellites!

You might be right even if the spam that I get is not generated by GPSFix. But even so we're talking about offline navigation, so there won't be any data connection so no spam.Even so you can use some ad blocker program, starting from rom toolbox lite, just to name one.

As I`ve posted before some code in most new kernels is causing some issues while using my car's handsfree set(vw) I get random disconnects.
So as I like Super D and I like latest dwang's rom. I mixed both of them and took the best of both roms. What you get with this rom is latest Super D with the best kernel that's working for me.
i don't take any credit from it, I'm sharing a good setup working for me. I just took all the work done by people involved in Super D and Dwang's rom. Apart from that I also included advanced launcher themed by eesel with cyanogen's tray shape.(thanks rogro82, cyanogen and eesel)
Link:

Trying will report back
thanks for sharing friend!
Edit:
1. Speed is good
2. Sometimes launcher lags in sweeping
3. No MT anywhere, well thats the Kernel thing
4. sign-in page force-closed on me many times but got over with that
5. Killing all the apps gives 60 MB free, wwhile on SD default kernel we get around 45 MB, this is great!
6. application response is very very quick
7. wall-paper gallery is older
Thats all for now....hope it helps those wanting to try this ...
Cheers,
I am not having those issues. Have you wiped everything before flashing? I didn't have any force close in the whole friday.
I have to research how to solve multi touch issue, because dwangs rom supports it
Wow, superb work. I may test it asap.
Hows battery life compared to stock SuperD? That was the thing put me away from Dwangs (and the random reboots).
Thankyou!
sounds interesting.

-no idea then, coz mine asked for re-inputting log-in information again and again. although everythhing was setup (meaning, synching was running while it was still bugging for signing in to google after I did it once)
Coming to your question, ya I always do full wipe, no matter what.
Your Mod definitely runs fast, congrates, and the force close is only stopped once you ignore signing in request and press Home button - done!
MT is an issue fr me, not that I use it while browsing web or Gallery very often but I like to have it for the sense of completeness
Good Job, I am now back to SupD tho.
P.S. Battery was not checked since I only stayed on this rom for less than an hour, not enough time right?
cheers
Battery life *seems* good so far
Multitouch is working indeed BUT not in the browser nor the photo gallery, I still have to look for more info. If you want to try it run MT visualizer. I 'm sure it's something about multitouch being handled in different way by donut or eclair.
I just flashed it without a wipe.
It works fine for me so far, but it should be mentioned that it is the white version
But i like suprising graphical changes

60 MB free? "
It use ramhack, compcache and swap?
BTW.. seriously.. The kernel have ramhack, right?
Now I'm using the rom SuperCSDI V1, and with the SupSetup I can turn on or off APP2SD.
I think it's a great thing, because installing apps on NAND they run a lot faaaaaaaaaaster! So I install default apps in NAND, and other apps in ext partition.
If I found a way to do it in this rom, I'll try it
PS: If you don't use compcache or swap and it have 60mb free on killing.. ramhack can be removed to use 3D application

OMG i have the same exact issue with the random disconnecting. its been prevalent in every rom since cyan's 4.2.6 (and dwangs, super D, etc). I've tried pushing the older working "bluetooth.apk" from 4.2.6 to the newer builds with no success at all. Did you recompile the ROM to make it work? The perfect ROM to me would be Super D 1.9.2 with no ram hack and working bluetooth.
good work though, im willing to sacrifice 3D games for working bluetooth though so i may give this a run... *subscribed!*
sounds good flashing
nice Rom, but it only has 3 screens, and i don't like the launcher. Despite those things its great, i did a few tests

What hands free set do you use?
I've read that you can solve it by editing /etc/bluez/audio.conf as follow
enable=
Disable=Headset,Gateway,Source,Control,Sink
uncoment #Master=true and replace it by Master=False (mind the caps)
It's working for BMW sets, give it a try may be you can keep 3d.

I drive an audi A3, and the OP drives a VW which most likely uses the same BT system. I just finished pulling the audio.conf from the phone and will edit it like you said. *fingers crossed* will update tomorrow...
UPDATE: The bluetooth fix mentioned by xabierd seems to have fixed my random disconnecting issue. didn't drop the connection once during my 30min commute to work. i normally experience at least 2-3 random disconnects every time i drive to/from work. yay!~!!
I'm glad I helped you, I am the OP too
EDIT: 03/210/11 Well tried 9.8 and 9.9.5 Base Roms......As unmodded ROMS, first of all the are quite buggy on my Captivate.
HOWEVER, I found the Apex ROM by watsaa and GPS on my phone is FIRE HOT!! ESPECIALLY IN AUTO CONFIG! Had to wear oven mitts to old my phone!!
Here is watsaa's ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952588
Here are my most recent observations on the GPS, for anyone with headaches still. I have run Navigon 3.5.3 for 45 days with absolutely no problem...I decided to try a proper navigation program over Google Maps type stuff.
The point of this thread: In LbsTestMode for SUPL settings choosing "Auto Config" gives stunning GPS performance as I have with Navigon. There is no need to use any customization, and I have not used any kind of GPS fixes. I do not remember which base rom began including the "Auto Config"
Regions Tested: All over New York City; Connecticut
Phone: Captivate (ATT)
ROM: Built using Romkitchen.org/(Captivate version only tested).
Base ROM: XWJS5 9.6
CSC: XEU
Modem: Telus TLJL3 - In my opinion this is critical and this has been the best in my hands---- see here for modem thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=869628
Kernel: Speedmod kernel....works great with glitterballs also, but I am not big on over clocking etc.
1. In LBSTestMode "Application Settings": Operation Mode is standalone; Start Mode is hot start and everything else is DEFAULT.
2. In Supl Settings...just choose "Auto Config"
3. Return back to main menu and delete GPS data.
4. Then run test.
5. As long as I keep the Telus modem, this stuff works every time.
Google Maps also works fine, and of course, turn-by-turn requires download of voice synthesis program.
Good Luck !!
EDIT: this is my ROM for anyone who wants to try. Please use odin to flash to stock, master clear then flash using CW recovery.

GPS.conf Profiles
This app does installs a customized gps.conf file for your GPS. It has several different profiles to choose from. We recommend to use the default Google profile but it is up to you. Apart from the general profiles, you can customize the one profile you choose to fit your own needs.
NTP Servers
Derek Gordon maintains a special NTP server pool for you. Dispite what everyone thinks, it is not necessarily the one closest to you which is the best. We consider Derek Gordon's server to be the best option to choose because it has the best data and is most frequently updated.
For more information about the NTP server check out the "About this app" section found under the settings of this app. Also, feel free to visit derekgordon.com for more in depth information.
aGPS Alamanacs
Derek Gordon maintains a special aGPS almanac for devices using Qualcomm or similar chipsets. This xtra.bin data file is updated every 30 minutes and is located on a content delivery system maintained by the generous donations of ther userbase.
For more information about the NTP server check out the "About this app" section found under the settings of this app. Also, feel free to visit derekgordon.com for more in depth information.
Donations
To maintain the server we need money. Donations through this app will be divided between Derek Gordon (Crypted) and Zatta on XDA.
Each star costs 2 Euro and will reduce the waiting time before you can install the patch. 0 star users wait 20 seconds, 1 star users 10, 2 star users only 5 and 3 star users and Premium users can install immediately.
You can become a premium user for only 5 Euro. This is a discount of 1 euro compared to a three star user! We choose this method to allow every one to use all features of this app and because we believe in XDA developers users. Please, don't leech!
Backup and Restore
On the first run of this app a backup is made on your SD card. Don't remove it because a backup is only made during the first run (or at an update if you choose to remove it anyway) and no other backup is found on your SD card.
ROM Updates
The patch this app provides is located on your /system partition so every time you do update your ROM the patch is overwritten and you will have to redo the patch.
Unless you are using a Cyanogenmod based ROM and your rom has addon.d support. In that case a script will be placed in the addon.d directory to preserve the patch.
It can be disabled in the app's settings but is enabled by default.
ASUS Users
On ASUS roms a typical file is present at /system/etc/gps, namely the gpsconfig.xml file. This app pathes that file as well, to be specific the PeriodicTimeOutSec parameter. Of course a backup is made of this file as well.
Get it on Google Play!

I use GPS Status app for testing my GPS, and after installing this app, it needed <10 secs to find my exact location. And I wasn't even under the clear sky.It usually takes min or two to get lock. The thing is, when I opened maps, it wasn't so precise. The circle was around 1km big.Thats strange.I will test more tomorrow though.
Can you explain exactly how this app helps to get quicker gps lock?

I can't do that exactly because there are many variables that are tweaked. This has been a long process, Crypted spent roughly 2 years experimenting with the gps.conf file and maintains 30 (!!) threads for various devices all over XDA.
The main thing though is the excellent ntp server he maintains.
Thanks to all downloaders over the past two weeks. We are now on a steady 400 active installations of the app, that is a rate of 66 percent of the total downloads which is great!
What makes me even more proud is that I didn't get any bug reports so far..

No it didn't create the backup of original file. just the folder was created in the sdcard. The new file is created in system/etc folder. I will try to upload original GPS confg file from ROM dump. I'm on micromax a110 device. It is a rebranded Chinese phone available in Indian market
Just to give some more info if that will help. I'm using an extremely large host file to block ads. not sure if this has any connection.
Been testing this on a Nexus 4 with Stock ROM and Franco Kernel. I've always had spotty GPS (if at all, specially inside buildings if I don't turn On WiFi). Yesterday, it locked me inside my house without WiFI after reboot in 3-4 seconds. Today, it has been kind of spotty. I flashed the General settings with no specific Country. I live in Puerto Rico. Do you recommend some specific settings?

Come on now, don't be so vague...
When it doesn't work, where are you? When it works, where are you?
Do you have any non-standard Nexus 4 ROMs installed? Any other GPS tweaks installed?
If it locks at a previous location, it sounds like GPS isn't being activated and it uses cached coordinates.
I have Stock ROM rooted with Franco Kernel, nexus 4. It doesn't work as well inside buildings which is to be expected. Yet I would like to have at least an estimate of my position. Couldn't this be done with network data? No other mods installed.

Friends,
I want to change the DEFAULT LOCATION PROVIDER to mediatek from Google location service in JB or ICS. I have MMX a90s(using for 8 months) and gets faster lock and better signal with mediatek YGPS(engineer mode, mobile uncle) usually within 90s, avg=40s (most of the time now, after using mtkgps file method, earlier took 8-10 min). I want to use the same GPS service for other apps requiring GPS(including maps if possible, since better accuracy and stability with ygps running in background )
I would like to change to any of the following(don't know actually which one I should select)
com.mediatek.atci.service
com.mediatek.android.location
com.mediatek.ygps
I have tried changing etc/location_conf.XML to all the above three services, but didnt see any effects.
Also there are 3 files in etc/permission folder regarding location
com.mediatek.location.provider.xml
com.android.location.provider.xml
android.hardware.location.gps.xml
Should I make change in any of these.
I am a final yr medical student, got only ideas from browsing forums and websites, got no programming knowledge.
I try methods I read from forums. I do trial and error after taking necessary ( I hope so) precautions(make a copy of every file before I change it, and have also got one cwm backup made ). SO I REALLY NEED SOME HELP...
Currently I am on Zhaoblast JB ROM.
I have been searching for a GPS solution since last 8 months. Now better with ygps run in background enabled(of course sometimes it won't work, but most often locks in 40 s ). But would like to use in other apps also as default provider.
Experts Plz do HELP...
thank u

Hi guys. Its like the 10th thread from me lately. Appreciate all the help getting from you.
I have compiled my first ROM and i had a lot of issues with it. And with your help a lot got fixed. The ROM works 99.9 %.
I only have one more problem with the ROM and its the NETWORK POSITIONING that seems to not working.
And i really need it because i use maps and weather app constantly. Without the NETWORK POSITIONING those apps don't work.
It just waits for gps all the time. I did compile CM11 and it works like a charm. But i dont want cm11
AOSP is more like my taste and i can add all the features i want without messing with CM11 pre compiled stuff.
So if someone could point me in the right direction would be very appreciated .
Cheers.
If the build compiled without errors I'd first look at your APNs. If your getting cell service that should be enough to get location as well. Just some thoughts.

This is my guide for the latest build of AOSP (KVT49L) with several bug fixes over the old 4.4.2 build. I just used 'GPS Test And Fix' app from the Play Store and the GPS finds 20 satellites and works in Google Maps. I did use the 'Reset GPS' and 'Download Xtra Data' options in the app and then GPS worked fine.
Hope that helps.
P.S. Often I have trouble when indoors with my Nexus 5 finding satellites so you might want to go outside and test see if the GPS works there.

HI man. Yeah its your tutorial that I am using. I don't have gps issues I'm having network positioning issues. Now I am on stock ROM and when I open let's say Google Maps it knows where I am instantly. But when I use my OWN compiled ROM it just shows the country and not Street. I don't know how to explain but I hope you get it.
I am experiencing exactly the same problem with a fresh, clean, by-the-book, build of AOSP 4.4.2. I am on a Nexus 4 though.
GPS works perfectly, but Network Positioning (GPS disabled, or GPS enabled but indoors) doesn't. I have been trying to fix this issue for the past few days now, but have made no progress. Using either the 4.4.2 stock ROM or CM11, both GPS and Network Positioning work.
I am suspecting that the binary blobs are missing a file that is needed for network positioning to work, but I haven't been able to figure out which one.
Yes and because of that I stopped development. I don't get it. I did as you said exactly by the book. I tried everything for a few days and then deleted everything. How did it go for you @xdajeyk?
So, your problem reminded me of something i ran into a few years ago. I haven't build my own rom in a while, so i'm not sure sure whether this helps, but maybe it does:
Search for the lines in frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml that say:
Code:
<string-array name="config_locationProviderPackageNames" translatable="false">

com.android.location.fused

</string-array>
And change this into:
Code:
<string-array name="config_locationProviderPackageNames" translatable="false">

com.google.android.gms

com.android.location.fused

</string-array>
That may fix your problem, it did for me a while ago. Good luck building!
@mbroeders Thanks, that does indeed fix the problem. Actually, I found that solution a few hours ago by browsing around in the device tree sample inside the sources. The sample files contain an overlay file that does exactly the same. To keep in line with the sample, I also made the change inside the device tree at
Code:
device/lge/mako/overlay/frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml
. Or, @bariz143, for the Nexus 5 that file should be
Code:
device/lge/hammerhead/overlay/frameworks/base/core/res/res/values/config.xml
.
I did not, however, find a detailed explanation of what is actually going on here and why it doesn't work out of the box, so I tried to figure it out myself, mainly from the comments in that sample file and some googling around. I am recording my findings here because I believe it will help other Android n00bs like myself.
Apparently, the network location provider is not part of AOSP, but instead is distributed together with the Google Apps. To get network location to work, you need to tell the framework that it is OK to use location providers provided by Google. It does not do that by default, because they (obviously!) are signed with a different key than the one used to sign the AOSP you just built. So, by adding
Code:

com.google.android.gms

into config.xml, you are telling the framework that it's OK to use location providers that are signed with the same key as the APK that provides the
Code:
com.google.android.gms
app, which apparently is the app that contains the network location provider.
I am going to try this for sure. Hope it workes for me to. Thank you guys.
