Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing really wierd behaviour with my HTC Desire S. I'll try to tell the story as it happened, so you may have the best grasp on what's happening to me. Here's the thing: yesterday, I charged my HTC on the wall plug as almost every night (y'all know how it is with smartphones, always needing to be charged ). When I unplugged it on the morining, the green LED stayed on. Not cool. I can't really remember if it was turned on and stuck or already turned off at that time, but I had to reboot the phone. Okay, that can happen, phones have to reboot sometimes.
And then, it did not boot. Instead, it was stuck on the bootscreen. I looked around on the internets, but people seemed to have boot loops or devices stuck after the "quietly briliant" part. Actually, mine was stuck before that part. It didn't even play the funny sound and show the fancy animation: it was stuck on the blank screen with only the HTC logo.
I tried many things, like praying pagan gods and removing the battery, let it cool for a while, boot and wait to see what happens for more than 30 minutes, boot it while plugged on the wall plug... I think I was about to get to the "I'll have to make a factory reset, then" line when I tried to see what dmesg would tell me if I plugged the phone on my computer. Note to self: always try to plug to computer. It did boot completely. The victory dance was almost completed when I was invited to enter my PIN code. My touchscreen did not respond. Damn.
So I had to reboot. Again had to remove the battery (I don't like that, but what choice do I have?). Now it always boots completely (that's a good start), but my touch screen seems completely unresponsive. I can't access anything, can't enter my PIN code or unlock the phone when there's no SIM.
That's where this forum comes in: I've not given up. You see, my phone has USB debugging activated (yeah I know, the thread's title spoiled all the story). I'm pretty sure this means adb can help me in some way to troubleshoot my device. adb shell gives a nice UNIX-like shell, yay, that is relevant to my interests.
My phone has never been rooted. I've looked into it (that's why USB debuging was activated), but I wasn't 100% confident it would work, so I gave up before ending up bricking my phone (duh, too late, haha). It's running the last Gingerbread version distributed by HTC in Belgium (2.3.5, I think, without any certainty), with the last Sense version related (could it be 3.0.3?).
tl;dr: Unrooted phone with unresponsive touch screen, debugging mode enabled, trying to find what's wrong.
So here's what I'd like to know: is there any way to try to force start my touch screen with the help of adb? Where's the related log, the one that should display the error(s) that occur(s)? Should Bill Murray play in the next Batman? If root is needed, do I have a way to use a temproot exploit in order to fix my phone once and for all?
Any attempt to help will be greatly appreciated. This is my first post here, I hope it's clear enough, and not too nooby for you guys. Also, that I didn't break any rule (I watched/lauged at that video about noobs to xda). Btw, I'm quite confortable with UNIX shells, so don't avoid cli-related answers if that may happen to be helpful. Also, I'm not at home right now, but I'll follow this thread with a lot of interest anyways. I'm back on a regular connection next sunday.

Okay, I'm back.
It makes no sense. I let my phone on for a few days, then suddenly, probably out of boredom removed the battery, put it back and rebooted. I distractingly tried to unlock it… and it worked.
I have absolutely no single clue on what happened. And I'm still quite concerned, because this means it can happen again without any warning.
I'm gonna give a shot at HTC's support in order to ask them what I can do to locate the problem if there are traces. I'd really, really like to read all the logs (and logcat didn't show anything interesting).
If anyone has a suggestion, feel free to shoot it. I'll try to keep this thread updated in case someone has the same problem.
Duh, just got an anwser from HTC's support. Totally useless, they told me to try to reboot in Safe Mode in order to see if the problem happens again. Well, even in normal mode it has not failed for two days. GJ, guys.
I'm really willing to meddle in my system in order to see what could have gone wrong. I'd especially like to see if there is any way to see whether there are HW faults or not, since I'm suspecting a temporary TS chip failure, which can happen again at any moment. I'll be reading some documentation about Android's system and its logs.
Yeah, I know I'm talking a lot alone, but if someone ever has the same problem, he might be able to see what I've gone through, so I'm documenting as much as possible. =)

My two months old Nexus S started to behave in a way that renders it pretty much useless - Freezing / Locked U
Freeze/Delay Between Menu and basically the phone is dead.
Very often when the screen is off, pressing power button powers up the screen with the screen lock, but the phone is not responsive so the screen just goes off again as it is impossible to slide to unlock it.
On top of that, leaving the phone with the screen off for a half an hour or so brings up some sort of warning sign and a small android (can see the screen shot here: http://yfrog.com/h3apmgqj) and the phone is effectively dead. The only thing to do in any of the two cases is remove and reinsert the battery, but that is no solution to anything. All this is while the battery is fully charged.
Did anyone experienced this before? resetting phone does not help.

Hi, no I do not - the image is actually from different phone but it looks exactly as it did on my Nexus S (little green guy with an exclamation mark). I never rooted my phone or done any custom mods to its system.
I actually sent it to Samsung and they are claiming that they found no problem, so they re-flushed the phone and are sending it back. I am seriously angry at samsung. It is arriving on the 11th so I'll let you know if that helped but I doubt it.
I believe this might be a faulty memory because I often received notification that the internal storage was unavailable or something of that nature as well, right before the problem would occur. Are the any tests I could perform for memory / storage?
just try to flash it back to stock
then do wipe data and wipe cache
see if that gets it back on its feet

I just received my phone from Samsung repair and of course, the phone is NOT fixed. On the side note, they also sent back my note that explains the problem meaning it was ignored completely.
I will be contacting @SamsungServic and calling but at this point I am not sure that they can fix the phone other then replace it.
Also,
I've spoken to Samsung and chat online and - yes they nice and throw back lots of promises and niceness back but they are NOT doing anything about it, for now at least.

I've been keeping a notebook to document my debugging of this problem. No app in particular is responsible, in my opinion. I have observed the phone lock up after a Factory Data Reset + USB wipe, and with no accounts configured. In fact, I have had it freeze after following this procedure:
1. Factory Data Reset + USB erase from Settings menu
2. Phone reboots.
3. Go through initial setup screens, skip account setup.
4. Power down phone.
5. Remove battery.
6. Remove SIM card.
7. Replace battery.
8. Power up phone.
9. Let phone sit for 15 minutes or more.
10. Phone freezes.
This is about as close to bare bones as I can get with this device.
I have also documented at least four freeze modes:
1. Phone is completely dark (both display and buttons). No combination of power button or other buttons can bring phone back. Battery removal required.
2. Phone display is dark, but the four "hard key" buttons are illuminated. No combination of power button or other buttons can bring phone back. Battery removal required.
3. Phone displays only a green android by a warning exclamation sign. Holding power button down, then volume up, then release volume up, will bring up the Android system recovery screen, from which phone can be rebooted.
4. Phone is frozen at the unlock screen. Sometimes this freeze occurs while swiping the unlock icon. No combination of power button or other buttons can bring phone back. Battery removal required.
I have observed the phone going from normal standby state (display and buttons dark) to state 2, and at other times to state 3, while it was sitting on my desk by the keyboard.
I'm just about ready to send it to Samsung. I just wanted to verify that the problem would be reproducible after a factory reset and without the SIM card.
I think it may be a hardware problem. It's also possible that part of the Android kernel or some device driver on my device has become corrupt. Unfortunately I can't reset the OS.

I did a factory reset from the stock recovery, too. Doesn't help either.
My phone arrived on Friday Samsung mobile repair in Texas. And like they did to ohter Nexus S devices from other users they will do the following to mine:
Reflashing the phone -> doing some functional tests ...
... and this is the crazy thing about it. The error we have is just appearing when the phone is in standby and because of this the phone passes the functional tests Samsung is doing at the end of the service. Phone goes back to user. A defective phone.
Some guy managed to keep the phone alive by setting the display turning off after 30mins. He is charging it twice a day

The support team is friendly and to me it feels like they try to do anything they could.
Funny: One guy got a replacement device. But then no one other. Just reflash...
I think they will do something but on the other hand I'm worried that they will do nothing. But time will tell....
Maybe it would help us if Google will be aware of the problem, too. Ok maybe they allready know it, but I don't know that.
So if some of you here do have some connections... please do us a favor and forward this topic or the link to the google support topic. Feel free to forward this topic to any website you think it would write a news about it. Maybe Google will throw a eye on it. My phone is 8 weeks old and yeah this so anoying. And of course all my friends who are iHippster are trolling me like hell.
It don't want to flame or blame Samsung\Google for this.But our phones are in warranty. The error hits only a few devices and so they should replace it. My 50cent about it... this is not a Google expierence they talked about...
I also had the same problem and sent my phone into Samsung. They only re flashed it, which didn't fix the problem. I immediately called Samsung to inform them that the issue was not fixed and they just told me to send it back for "double checking." Do you think it is better to send it back in or just wait for fix to emerge?
I will be sending it back and demand replacing the phone, also making sure they just don't re-flash again. I guess anything but re-flashing could work.
Remember that I've mailed my phone with one page letter explaining the problem. Their response was flashing the phone and sending it back - with my letter.

Yeah i wrote a letter too explaining the issue and how to recreate it (the first time). They told me that it passed their quality assurance inspection after re-flashing it, which must be very poor because my phone shut off again 15 minutes after receiving it. Just dropped it back off at UPS today. Can they replace the phone because of this issue? I know one person had success, but it doesn't seem anyone else has.

Samsung may not be able to reproduce it after reflashing; as this issue does not seem to occur when connected to a PC/computer via USB. Their automated testing could be over USB.
Looks like more and more people are facing this issue as the day goes by.

I figured that was why they couldn't recreate the shutdown. Made sure they knew that it has to be unplugged. Mine always shuts off within 10-15 minutes if untouched.
I have same problem.Only remove battery helps. I have been having nexus s for 2 and half months and this problem just came last week. I don't know how to solve it. I tried reflash firmware but didn't help.
welcome to the club. you have to send it to USA to get it serviced (make a extreme detailed problem description and make sure the support worker writes it down 1:1 into their ticket system). they provide a 2day ups shippment label, BUT only to locations in USA.
I can recommend FedEx. They helped me a lot with this duty stuff for shipping to USA. That's not so easy . I paid €50 to get it shipped to a friend of mine in USA.
You have to send only the foreparts of the device. No battery and back panel, no charger and so on. But they will give you all informations at the end of the service request.
or: wait for a hotfix. which maybe never will come.

I just mailed my phone again... they told me they do not replace phones (not sure what that means yet). The Rep was arguing that if I want the phone replaced then I need to talk to T-Mobile - it does not make any sense.
Anyway, I explained the problem as much as I could and did not mail any notes this time as they obviously do not care for it. But I made sure he included every detail in his notes.
I am very skeptical but still hoping....

About the part when the phone does not freeze when plugged in or charging. I had my Nexus S charging overnight and it was frozen in the morning.

Also, I've contacted @SamsungServic via Twitter and asked if their team recognized it as a problem, but I've got no response.
On the other hand if you report the problem to them, they will respond that they will look into it - which means nothing, but if enough people asks the same question them they will have to.

I have a NS4G from Sprint that I recently upgraded to the oICS43 rom from AOSP. While playing around with some of the settings I decided that I was going to encrypt the phone, as I'm a bit of a geek about security as well as the fact that there's quite often client information and such on my phone, so it would be nice to keep people locked out if I ever lose it or it gets stolen. Well, it started up a little dialog that flipped by before I was able to read it and then it went to the boot animation (the one with all of the colors going across the screen.) I figured that this was just what it was going to do during this process, but it's been going on for over an hour and a half and I'm starting to get worried. I know that it says that it can take over an hour, but this just seems really weird that it would have people sit there for that long with no sort of warning about not powering down your phone, no progress bar, etc. If any of you have encrypted your phone please let me know if this is what things are supposed to be looking like at this point. I do have a lot of stuff on the phone (12gb of the 16 filled, about 375 apps installed) so I understand that mine would probably take a little bit longer than normal, so really I'm hoping to just get some reassurance here.

I've come to the conclusion that it was some kind of failure, now I pulled the battery and I'm in the process of getting everything back to working.
Well, getting everything back up and running was a huge PITA. I'm going to actually try to figure out what happened, though, just so that I can report back. I had to reformat and wipe everything on the phone, and the phone itself couldn't mount the /sdcard. I had to have CWM mount the /sdcard and then reformat it from Windows.
Somebody else posted that encryption completely fubared their phone yesterday. That thread is probably in the Nexus General Forum.

After getting the phone back up and running (you have to go and individually format each section, as well as factory reset and wipe both caches, then mount the /sdcard in windows and format that way from CWM because it won't be able to mount /sdcard) I was able to start fresh with oICS43 and the phone is now currently encrypting itself successfully. It takes a LONG time, as it's 83% done after 45 minutes. Just so that anybody that's curious about it knows, you'll see a screen that says "Encrypting" across the top with a little jigsaw puzzle android guy on the screen. If you just see the flowing colors boot splash that means you just fudged up your phone.
Hello XDA, i've heard (and know) that you guys are quite good with phones, and was hoping someone would be able to help me out, i can't find anybody with the same problem.
So here it is:
Since i've been skiing, often when i lock my phone the screens keeps on coming on and staying on the lock screen, and just won't turn off, so it's an obvious baterry drainer and pontentially dangerous for the screen, so i've resosrted to putting a black background image.
Also when the battery gets "critically low" my phone comes up with the message and also vibrates, but keeps on repeating in, just doesn't stop !
I've also noticed that when this problem occurs when i go into battery saver in options the second box constantly flashes as does the estimate remaining time and time since last charge.
My battery is now really bad when this happens, but supprisingly is ok when this doesnt happen.
Has anybody else had this problem, or something similar? and could someone give me some advice (factory reset? which i don't really want to have to do :/ )

and my phone is generaly a bit buggy when this happens, like suddenly turning off etc.
Since this happened after skiing, I'm guessing your phone got a bit wet, probably around either the power button or the battery (or both). You can try drying it out by putting it in some warm dry rice (an excellent dessicant) but that's something you do within minutes of it getting wet, not days, if you want to avoid permanent damage.
You could also try taking the battery out and carefully inspecting it, comparing it with the battery from another phone, etc. If it appears damaged in any way (swollen, discolored, corrosion on the contacts, etc.) you could try replacing the battery and seeing if that helps. You could also replace the phone, of course, but you'll probably have to buy it at retail price unless you've got insurance that covers liquid damage.
You could try a factory reset before replacing the phone, since you'll lose all your data anyhow, but this doesn't sounds nearly as much like a software problem as it does like a hardware problem. However, getting your data off is actually possible, using a tool like WP7 Root Tools (which is really awkward to use for backup, but it can be done). If you wait the next however-long for Heathcliff74 to release a version of Root Tools that supports elevating other apps, you'll be able to use a data backup tool that I wrote last year and am modifying to work via any full-permissions access.

The same problem actually happened in November also, but quickly went back to normal, but it's been a week now so it's getting a bit annoying.
I just rang samsung and she obviously said do a reset, so i think i'll do this but this will erase everything, i would just like to keep my contacts and messages tbh.
Havn't got time do research that yet but i'll look after, unless someone points me to something first, and i'll post back.

You can make a backup of the phone before hard-reset. That way, if the reset doesnt' fix anything, at least you can restore the backup and be back where you were before deciding on your next step.

Let me apologize in advance if this question seems familiar, my Google-fu is good and I've read hundreds of posts, thousands probably over the past year looking into this, so I'm finally posting out of well, not desperation exactly, but curiosity.
I have an S3 HTC One S, Ville C2 with TWRP recovery, (the only recovery that works), and Um let's see Luxandroid v4 giving Android v4.1.1 htc sense 4+ software version number 3.19.720.100
If I run the battery down, (I try not to), the phone won't start for a few days.
Well, not true, it is will start, it just won't display anything. I can run adb and see the phone, and it used to restart proper, display and all if I just rebooted it via adb.
That stopped. Now I have to wait until the battery is about 30% at least, this can take several days, start adb, give adb reboot, hold the volume up, and, justy lately, dance naked in the rain around a freshly made clay idol of the Gnome God, Jim, because it's a bit haphazard. (Obviously in the summer this is harder as it rains less.)
It's a completely robust phone the rest of the time, except for the occasional reboot when I've got all the mapping, phone, blue-tooth etc. on. It waits until I'm on the motorway to do this.
Main thing is, I thought it was related to some bug that I used to read about six months ago but which seems to have disappeared from searches. It's definitely is on, but the screen display isn't, "backlighting" isn't. (I know it's not back lit, but in the dark I can see very faintly that these is a display, of sorts).
Why is it doing this?
Can I put is back to stock reliably and would that work to stop this nuisance?
Is there a big words and picture version of putting it back to stock floating about somewhere and I've missed it?
Will I ever be able to put KitKat on it?
I'm not expecting instant answers or any answers, I just thought it was worth asking in the place where all the experts are. (Because I lurk here a lot, I screw up my Nexus 7 (2013) from time to time too).
I do program and teach for a living so I can follow reasonably complicated instructions.

I'm new to this forum and this is my 2nd attempt to get help to solve my problem. I have read ALL the rules posted in the XDA New User Guide - Getting Started On XDA, as well as all of the linked pages that are suggested to read before posting. It was very informative but I'm more confused then ever about the right place to seek help. This is all very overwhelming and I'm afraid I'm going to say something to offend someone or post in the wrong place and get in trouble, or worse, ignored. I suspect I did just that in my last post because I never got a response. I apologize in advance if I have done something wrong.
Ok, I'll do my best to explain my problem. I have an LG K20 Plus (I'll refer to this as my original phone) that I bought, brand new, from T-Mobile in May. In August I cracked the screen but continued to use it because besides the crack, it worked fine. By September the crack had worsened significantly and I decided to replace the outer glass as I had successfully done that with my older LG G3.
In that process, while trying to get that dreadful glue off, I scraped off some of the black stuff under the glue on the LCD which caused a white spot, about the size of a 1/2 dollar, on my screen. Although it was bothersome, the phone itself still worked fine. I continued to use it while I searched for the easiest way to fix it within my budget. After reading posts here and realizing it would work, I bought a used LG K20 Plus (I'll refer to this as my used phone) with a bad esn. The plan was to put my original logic board into the used phone and be on my way. That didn't happen.
When the used phone arrived, I turned it on to verify everything worked. I then put my original logic board into the used phone and turned it on. I saw my orignal wallpaper and was so happy I had my phone back. Then I tried to swipe to unlock and nothing happened. I booted it up a couple more times and still nothing. I connected a mouse via an OTG cable and verified that there were no more obvious issues with the phone except the digitizer. To confirm the dispaly wasn't faulty on the used phone, I put the used logic board back into the used phone it came with and booted it up. The digitizer was back to working again. I ran through as much as I could on a locked phone and the digitizer worked like new.
I, carefully, put my original logic board back into the used phone and, again, no touch capability. Again, I researched this problem to no avail. I realized I was way over my head and I decided to ask for help instead of making things worse by trying to fix it without knowing what I was doing. So, I put the phone in a drawer and asked for help here. That was a month ago. I know you are all very busy and, like I said earlier, I'm sure it's my fault and I messed up somewhere because my post didn't receive any replies.
I can't use my original phone because I have no touch ability and I can't use the used phone because it has an esn lock. At this point I decided to try and (I'm sure I'm using the wrong terminology here) flash the used phone and root it to bypass the bad esn lock. After researching that and seeing the word "illegal" A LOT, I decided I just didn't know if it was legal or not, so I decided to not take the risk of doing something that may get me into trouble.
At this point I decided I didn't have much to lose so I backed up my original phone and, with only the display of the used phone attached, I started the process of flashing it with TWRP and rooting it via this guide https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/recovery-twrp-v3-lg-k20-plus-t3616248 So, it is now successfully rooted but it still has no touch ability. The really weird thing is, while I was in TWRP Recovery mode, the touch ability worked again. But as soon as I rebooted the phone into regular mode, the digitizer stopped working again. I'm so confused and I don't even no where to start looking because I can't define the problem or the exact thing that is failing. I don't even know if it's hardware or software related.
So, I guess my question is, does anybody have any experience with this kind of problem you could share with me. I'd settle for someone being patient enough to explain to me exactly what is going on so I could research it better myself. Asking for help was not my first step. I have been looking and looking for 6 weeks now. I'm way out of my league with this stuff. It's really difficult to find a solution to a problem you don't quite understand. It's a little bit like being told to look up a word in the dictionary to find the spelling.

Here is what you do. Hook it up to a pc. Take a logcat and that will tell you what is failing. It sounds like a kernel compatibility issue.

I'm so sorry but I have run into a few problems .. firstly, on my phone I have to use a mouse connected via OTG cable because I have no touch ability and my usb connection is set to "charge only". Apparently you can't change that until the phone is plugged in and obviously I need the mouse so I can't connect to computer. I downloaded an app called LogCatX and made a log file but I don't know how to attach a file and when I copy/paste it into the reply it says it is too long and reduce by 30000 characters. Any advice?

Apparently you can't change that until the phone is plugged in and obviously I need the mouse so I can't connect to computer. I downloaded an app called LogCatX and made a log file but I don't know how to attach a file and when I copy/paste it into the reply it says it is too long and reduce by 30000 characters. Any advice?

I think the new touch screen will need a calibration.

Sorry for my confusion but I'm not sure if you were telling me what I should do to figure out where the incompatibility issue may be or if you were asking me to upload the catlog so you could look at it and help me. I don't know what a catlog is, nor how to interpret it. At any rate, 6 hours later, I have, finally, figured out how to upload a file. :victory: I've been looking at how to fix a kernel incompatibility issue and I've read you can flash a custom kernel. If I did something like that, would that resolve my problem. Are they specific to the version of operating system your phone has (ie nougat, marshmallow etc) or do you need to use one for your specific phone model? Would flashing a custom ROM do the same thing? And is that model specific or OS specific? Where would I go to find something like that?
NOTE... In looking for differences in my phone to try and figure out where this kernel compatibility issue might be, I noticed that there are two different numbers on the midframe of my phones. I don't know if this means anything. I'm just trying to help someone help me.

Hello? Was this the extent of your help? I'm not sure if you were asking me to run a catlog to upload so you could help me figure out what was wrong or if you were just telling me what to do and then moving on. Because if it was the later, all you've done is piled more stuff on my steadily growing mound of confusion. To make matters worse, my posts is showing as getting a response, so, I fear, nobody else will look at it and I will be left in the same place as before. If someone happens upon this post, could you give me advice that will actually help me solve my problem, along with instructions on how to do whatever I need to do. Thank you in advance. Until then, I'll be anxiously awaiting your reply....
