My Wifi is putting out at 35mbps but when I test my Internet Speed its not even 1mbps.my data is 10 times faster than my Wifi on my phone. What's wrong? On my gs 2 Wifi was 2 times faster than my data..

Any expert can tell me why 3G Data Connection consumes more battery than Wifi?
I have done experiment on turning on just:
1. Wifi
2. 3G Data connection
All other functions/apps stay the same.
1. lasted over 20 hours with minimal usage
2. lasted no more than 13 hours with minimal usage.
Any expert has an explanation?
I'm not an expert, but I've observed the same thing that you have, 3G uses more power than WiFi, both at idle and "in use" (such as streaming music).
On my HTC Hero, using WiFi, 1%/hour idle, approx 2.5-3%/hr "in use". With 3G, approx 4%/hour idle, 10-15%/hour "in use".
It takes more power to boost up your transmit signal from your phone to reach the cell tower 2 miles away compared to the wifi hotspot 5 meters away?

thanks
yeah, because i was thinking when using wifi, there is an extra device running.
but when on 3G data, shouldn't it be the same thing as the normal phone signal?
so why would 3G data consume more battery than wifi? thats what is puzzling me.

3G (UMTS) and 2G (GSM) are usually implemented as two different subsytems. 3 years ago, when I was working with their designs, devices actually had 2 antennas internally, because of optimsation for different frequencies.

i am no technical person but I am guessing .. that means when I turn on 3G data, I am using something that is NOT related to the original phone signal connection and that is why it consumes battery on top of the original phone signal connection?
and so happens the UMTS consumes more battery than Wifi too?
Wifi just sucks more battery in general

but in fact, the phone operates under wifi is more battery saving than operating under 3G connection...
Does anyone else seem to have terrible wireless signal? Using Wireless N, the highest reported link speed (from android wireless settings) I have seen is 58mbps. But, averages around 35-40. Seen as low as 1 being only 20ft from the router. Wifi Analyzer reports signal strength at -83dbm from about 15 feet away. The signal seems so terrible that I normally switch to 4G just to browse the internet.
My old incredible was always pegged at 65+.
What gives?
Yeah, I don't know what's up the WiFi in the Charge. I had a Sammy Vibrant before and it always had 3 full bars of WiFi in my house, while my charge is only showing one or less. I wonder if they put that low-power WiFi in our phones, the same one that was put in the Nexus S 4G. They've had a lot of signal issues with those also.

Ive been usng my phone for quite a long time without Wifi but ive noticed that recently, after I installed Eaglesblood (dont think the rom/its kernel made much of a difference) the battery life with wifi ON has been draining much slower than without wifi and the use of data only. I dont understand because ive been using it constantly and it has been yanking in data constantly but draining much slower. Normally data on lasts me about 11 hrs on a good day. I was home all day, so with wifi on, my batter is at 30% left with 14 hrs of usage now.. Can anyone explain to me why this is happening because I wud much rather have a slower drain on 3g data than wifi (Im not always home and data is used much more extensively in updating).
If you're using wifi, you're generally in good range and have an easy connection.
If you're using data, things like buildings and movement can interfere with your connection, meaning it has to do more "searching" for the proper signal. Even if your bars tell you that you have a good connection, all that tells you is the total amount of signal, not the available amount to you (so sometimes even if you have full bars it needs to search for a good connection).
Correct, if you're on radio (2g/3g/4g), the phone is constantly searching for a signal and will thus spend more battery.
Hence why people say, turn off your radios (airplane mode) when you're in an area with no signal...like out in the boonies, because it will spend time searching for a signal that's nonexistent.
Some people say that Wifi uses up more power than data because it has faster data transfer speeds, but that clearly isn't the truth.

Who said that? I've never heard it. Wi-Fi is known to use less batttery since day 1, clear and simple.
So my wifi tether speed sucks. I am tethering to a first gen iPad. My reception in my house is terrible but my gs3 avg is about 14 down ans 1.2 up.
I'm getting about 3.75 down and .65 up on average.
I tried using foxfi and wifi tether.
I tried with and without encryption (I got 11.5 down once with foxfi, I think it was a bad reading, can't duplicate it),
Wifi is not on power saver (*#0011#)
I also noticed that when using the tethering apps for 20-30 minutes I get kicked off the data network. I thought it might be a heat issue but my phone never passed 42C and the guys at Samsung said I shouldnt have any problems till 46C
What's your tether speed, the device your using, and any ideas you have to boost speed)
I've just switched broadband provider and have noticed that my battery life is just awful compared to how it was with the previous WiFi connection.I could normally go a full day on heavy use and still have around 30% at the end of the night. The phone has been mostly screen off for about 5 hours and it has went from full charge to 16%.
I can confirm it is definately using a 5ghz signal as I logged into the router page and it was listed as a 5ghz connection.
Does anyone know how to make the Z3 run on a 2ghz connection instead?
I'm rooted (locked bootloader) and have xposed if anyone knows any modules which might help
This has to be set on your Router not on your phone.
