CM7-A8.2 Camera glitch - Galaxy 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've successfully installed CM7.2-A8.2 on my phone with the ultra OC kernel, and I had no problems up until now. The thing that got me to register and eventually create a thread is that the camera - which I know is not fully functional - is a bit buggy. I can live with the messed up preview thing, but somehow 1/3rd of all my pictures are being taken later than other parts of the picture. That is a bit annoying, and I wonder if there is any solution to the problem. I tried to put the minimal core frequency up to 360, that didn't help.
Looks like I can't link a picture properly, so I'm gonna do it the ahrd way: bence .heilig .hu /IMG_20120801_221900.jpg

Very strange indeed, did you instal another kernel to CM7.2-A8.2 or just the one that is with the ROM.
I have noticed that other kernel's can somethimes provide weird results.

Actually the kernel I have is not for the A8.2 but for the A8.1a, but I have another phone with the same kernel/ROM (my father's) and the camera on it works just fine. As far as I know A8.2 has no kernel included.

Try g2mod 2.5 kernel, I had some strange bugs on CM7 before using that.
Have you tried different camera applications? Camera360 and Camera Illusion work quite nice with CM7.

Thanks, the g3mod 2.5 kernel did the trick : )

any kernal can be used

no any kernel of this device can be used......I use A8.3 ROM ND Alpha8's ultra oc kernal and it works fine.....just try flashing another kernal or just update Ur ROM to 8.3

Freeze issue on Imnuts' 1/15 kernel

I'm having an annoying issue with my Charge. Whenever I try to record with the Camera the phone just freezes and reboots after about 10 seconds. Yes I'm undervolted, which is what I'm suspecting as the issue but I went into Voltage Control and set the voltages back to 0 and to no avail, it still just froze and rebooted. I tried overclocking to 1.2Ghz without undervolting that clock speed at all(1GHz and below were still all undervolted) and it still just froze and rebooted.
The weird thing is this happens on the stock undervolt settings that the kernel comes with. I'm going to assume Imnuts' just didn't have the time to test all the apps individually for stability issues when implementing his undervolt script. I know it's an issue with the kernel(almost positive it's from the undervolting itself because i had stability issues exactly like this back on EE4 when i would undervolt) because if I reboot and flash imoseyons 4.0.0 kernel recording is fixed.
edit: I just tried removing my Voltage Control boot settings so there shouldn't be any undervolting going on(aside from the stock undervolt script thats included with the kernel) and it still just freezes and reboots. I'm guessing it's either the undervolt script or the kernel itself. Anyone else have this issue? If so how'd you fix it? Thanks in advance.
just tested. i use the default uv settings, oc to 1200.
camera was able to record fine. no freeze.

How long did you let it record? and was it on 1280/720? It usually freezes on me after about 10-20 seconds
I just tried to record.. Freezes after 4 seconds reboots just like you described. Eclipse ROM+PBJ 1.15 kernel. Oh also no overclocking at all for me

That seems to be an issue with Eclipse rom. A lot of people are having that problem and nitro is aware of the issue and says the next version will have a fix.

While I never use the camcorder at that resolution, I tried it now and had the same freeze-up. Running tweakstock (fancy that lol) and pbj kernel - I tried this without any voltage control-style modifications. I have some vague recollection of similar issues at some other point, and for some reason I remember the class of sdcard being part of the conversation... I of course can be (and most likely am) completely off on that, just thought I'd mention it.

I remember that class 2 cards can't do HD video, but class 4's are supposed to be able to. I never do video, but I have a class 4, so I tried to see (on Eclipse) and it crashed to the point of forcing a reboot. Not sure now if it's ROM or kernel.
just tried hd vid. on eclipse w/Imos 4.0 kernel with no problem....
Mine did the same thing and I am just using the kernel and the new eclipse

I have been running the pb&j 1/15 kernel and Infinity rom for a day now with no freeze-ups or reboots. I haven't messed with OC'ing or voltages, just wanted to see if the new kernel made a difference. The phone is now much smoother in operation and quicker in response. Very impressive.
I saw this post and walked around the house scanning barcodes using shop-savvy and had no issues at all. This app does a lot of stuff on top of using the camera and just flies now.
Also getting freeze-up when trying to record HD vid.
Running Tweakstock 1.1 and PBJ 0115
edit: *UPDATE* - I just flashed Imoseyon's 4.0.0 kernel to test, and HD recording worked flawlessly. So it does seem to be the kernel which is causing the issue (in my case at least). Can anybody tell me how to pull a logcat so I can send it over to imnuts?

See anyone running Imos kernel doesn't have the issue so I don't believe that Eclipse is the problem, although it is still possible.

Yeah I remember back when Gummy2.0 was released I had that issue. I know it's not the same thing though because whenever I would record it would give me an error message like "This SD card does not support HD video recording" or something like that and it would just close the camera app, it wouldnt just freeze and reboot.

I'm positive it's not a problem with the SD card. I'm on Tweakstock so for now it's to be assumed that the kernel is the problem since cujo6801 already tested Eclipse with Imos kernel and had no problem, but adrenaline_rush tested Eclipse with Imnuts' kernel and it froze/rebooted. Pretty sure it's a kernel issue at this point.

Try your actual Camera and attempt to record video @ 1280/720, then tell me if it reboots.
I got the freeze and reboot every time with Eclipse and PBJ at 720p. Flashed Tweakstock with PBJ and it worked. Then tried Eclipse with the ep4d kernel and that worked too. I thought it might be the camera so I copied the one from from Tweakstock into Eclipse and 720p recording worked fine undervolted and oc'd to 1200.
Edit: Tried it again since reflashing updated Eclipse and it locked at 10 seconds. Guess I was lucky last time. Shot multiple 45 second plus videos ok.

Tweastock with PBJ freezes and reboots on mine too. Never froze on Tweakstock with included kernel
Checked the comments on Imnuts' kernel over at RootzWiki and i can confirm it's a problem with the kernel, in addition to that the HDMI port doesnt seem to work.
I have been getting froze screens and 1 reboot also, since running imnuts kernel. I thought it was maybe the ROM but doing a little research IM finding the kernel has an issue. I didn't try the camera with imnuts kernel but I've flashed imo 4.0 kernel and the recording does work w/o force closing on me.

Also be careful overclocking on PBJ, I set it to 1600 max on SetCPU, and after a few moments it froze and rebooted. When it rebooted, as soon as SetCPU was granted SU, there goes another freeze. I wasn't able to change the settings due to the freeze, and after a few reboots I was taken to the setup screen like you would see after a factory reset. But this came with random F/C errors and lots of non-functional apps. You can't do anything at this point but restart from stock+PIT and go up from there. Reflashing the ROM, kernel, restoring, even ODINing another ROM won't rid the F/C hell.
Same thing as this, when I tried to use the Voodoo screen tuner:

Oh also people stated imyosen kernel was a battery drain, but it's been very good on battery so far.

Camera Quality ???

in the beginning everything was fine, but from last couple of weeks .. i am noticing a major drop in the quality of the pictures. As i was using Cyanogenmod, i thought it is due to that, but then using the Stock based Custom Rom, or even even the Stock rom is giving the same result. Camera patch available in this forum, also didn't work fine for me.!
Is that, my Camera hardware is, affected.... or are there any other reasons!

i think yours is too much overclocking bro.. if we used cm7 and oc 600mhz up the cam will be flickering.. so i think it's caused of oc.
but as my experience if i reflash to stockrom it will be normal.. may be your cam hardware has small damage bro because of oc.

But ..my phone Doesn't support OC above 729Mhz!!
What should i do, go and get my hardware replaced by the Samsung or wait for the Camera working in ICS, as i have read somewhere that, sometimes phone's camera acts weird due to low shutter speed, and as we know shutter speed in ICS is increased by Google.
Suggest me !

running virtuous infinity... very low speakerphone volume

hi, i used to have a G2 running CM7, recently got a MT4GS (Doubleshot) and was using CM9 on it, but didn't like the camera app, i loved the stock sense camera app on the MT4GS, just don't want the bloatware. so after some googling, i have found VIRTUOUS INFINITY to fit my needs with a stockish feel, but sleeker/quicker.
only thing i've come across that keep this rom from being a homerun, is the speakerphone volume is really really low... is there a fix for this yet? i am running the latest beta with OTA updater.
also, when using instagram, the "blur" effect, causes artificats in the blurred area.
once again, only real gripe i have is the ridiculously low sound i get from speakerphone when on the phone... like literally, the headset speaker is louder then the speakerphone at full volume.
love the rom otherwise, camera works great, and i don't need 1080p recording, perfectly happy with 720p.
Hi! Are you talking about the incall volume? If yes I have made a patch for this already which fixes a couple of bugs. And one of them is the in call volume.
Here's a mirror made by the great WeekendsR2Short who just got his mirror thread stickied now.

Just flash it above the current virtuous infinity ROM you have and clean the dalvik cache.

hi, i appreciate the quick reply. i am referring to the actual speakerphone volume. i was on CM9 for a few hours, and know the speakerphone was loud enough to hear over the radio while driving. after i i went to V.I., the speaker phone volume sucks, but i am loving the rom... small compromise, but was hoping there was a fix, as in my little google efforts showed others have experienced the same thing.
i havn't tried the patch you linked me, i have used the Sound Enhancer Patch.zip from the same stickied thread though. hoping that would be the solution i was looking for, it seemed to increase the speakerphone volume slightly, but nowhere as loud as it was with CM9 or stock rom.
thinking of trying bulletproof right now, i see lots of praise on that rom too.

just tried the patch you linked me to in your reply. that fixed my problem! thanks a lot! my speakerphone is now as audible as it once was! i didn't try the all in one patch, i just tried the sound enhancer one. my problem is solved now.
i will post back with any updates, hopefully phone stays stable, i noticed after i installed the soundenhancer patch, while making a phone call and putting it on speaker to try it out, i was having the phone turn off on me, or OS crash, not sure. going to revert to backup i made in nandroid, and just apply the patch you linked me too. once again, thanks for the help!
I made both the sound enhancer patch and the all in one patch. The sound enhancer patch is buggy and I made a 2nd version of that. And after sometime I compiled all the fixes I made to VI into that all in one patch.

You need to replace the old kernel with the one included in the patch.
Judging by your problem I'm sure your S-On so what you should do is..
extract boot.img from the patch
then fastboot it into your phone.
The new kernel there fixes some other bugs which you might encounter soon so better flash it now rather than later. Else if you insist using the old kernel just replace the bcmdhd.ko in your /system/lib/modules with the one from the original VI flashable zip.

and yea, i am s-on, ill look into s-off this weekend. being able to flash from one different roms without having to fastboot through pc first would be a fun way to kill time. lol.

well, maybe s-off isn't quite needed then, since i'm not quite a developer that will always be flashing new roms on. just trying to have fun with the phone when i can.
anyway, just wanted to report back that phone is running flawlessly now with new kernal and patch, camera is slightly cripser, less lag while multitasking, speakerphone nice and loud, and loving the new battery profiles.
i appreciate the quick help in getting my problem resolved. :good::highfive:
Speaking of camera apps, mattlowry found one for us that works GREAT in this ROM. It adds quite a few more settings that really adds some finetuning abilities for your pictures. If you haven't already, you ought to flash this attachment.....IMHO.

was this included in the unoffical_patch.zip?
i had this flashed onto my phone already, but reverted back to original backup, and flashed the unofficial_patch onto my phone, assuming it had the upgraded camera app too.

thanks for the info. :highfive:
edit- just re-read the section in your sticky. will flash the camera app back on. realized it wasn't included in the AIO patch.
:good: It adds enough that I certainly was glad Matt found it.
so i've been using the phone for about a week with no issues.
rather then starting a new thread, i thought i'd post some questions up in here. since i can't post in the developer thread for the rom.
just to confirm, panoramic picture doesn't work? and slow motion video doesn't work? just tried messing with those settings today, but app would just close. just wanted to make sure it wasn't working to begin with and not a faulty install on my part.
i was looking to buy a new battery, but noticed the phone has a 1800mhz battery from an evo 3d. my girlfriend said she bought it, because the original battery was really bad. is there a better battery upgrade for me than the 1800mhz? i notice battery life is great when not using the phone, but as soon as i start browsing the net, or listening to music, it sees the battery drains almost a percent every few minutes. is there an app or way to test health of a battery?
also, for the launcher/app drawer, is there a way to make the apps scroll vertically versus horizontally?
and while i'm asking questions, anyone have a recommendation for a mobile video editing app? something easy to trim clips, and add transitions, and maintain HD quality.
other then these few questions. i'm loving the phone and rom. been real stable besides the aforementioned things. it still has artifact glitching when using the blur tool in instagram, but that i can live with.
thanks in advance for any insight/help. :highfive::good:

Panoramic picture is a framework issue so downloading a 3rd party camera which doesn't depend on htc framework should work. And regarding slow motion video it's a kernel issue. Virtuous team never really focused on fixing the kernel to fix up it's compatibility(this includes 1080p recording) so we maybe having a decent sense 4 ROM but we got a crippled kernel.

It's a sense 4 thing. Better of using a different launcher instead or fully modify the layout of the rosie.apk. But I can't do it.

thanks for the reply! i will download that app for video editing, and find one for panoramic pictures.
i just downloaded cpu tuner, and set my clock sped to roughly 1.5ghz, phone is nice and snappy, real responsive, feels like a brand new phone. is this a safe stable range to clock at (1.5ghz)? or should i run lower, it was only at 1ghz, and i was reading that some roms actually set the kernal clock speed at 1.7ish... ill probably turn it down to 1.3ish, hopefully for better battery life and overall longevity of phone.
and whats a good minimum clock speed? was unsure what it meant, but i think its basically the resting clock speed when phone isn't in use?

can't wait to get my new anker batteries in the mail, so i can start adding a lot of games and movies and seeing what kind of battery life and phone usage i can get out of tweaked cpu profiles.
once again, thanks for the help everyone.:highfive:

thanks for the reply! i will download that app for video editing, and find one for panoramic pictures.
i just downloaded cpu tuner, and set my clock sped to roughly 1.5ghz, phone is nice and snappy, real responsive, feels like a brand new phone. is this a safe stable range to clock at (1.5ghz)? or should i run lower, it was only at 1ghz, and i was reading that some roms actually set the kernal clock speed at 1.7ish... ill probably turn it down to 1.3ish, hopefully for better battery life and overall longevity of phone.
and whats a good minimum clock speed? was unsure what it meant, but i think its basically the resting clock speed when phone isn't in use?

My phone will get a bit freaky at 1.7gHz if I run it too long. My basic range is 192mHz to 1.5gHz all day everyday. I have yet to need 1.7gHz when 1.5gHz works for everything I need it to.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement

[Q] Kernel Recommendations

I'm looking for a kernel or kernel tweak to fix an issue. My issue isn't with how fast games are running (I can drudge through the bits of lag, its not that bad) or the screen freezing. Its with touching the screen in two places at the same time. I've read about the touch screen CPU spikes, where every time you touch the screen the CPU jumps to 100%. Which would make sense to why when I'm playing games the button pad (on the right side of my screen) hits the corresponding button I'm holding down on the directional pad (on the left side of my screen) and visa versa. Thus making most games, especially games that require jumping in certain directions and hitting two buttons at the same time almost impossible to play.
Currently I'm running backside iho cm7.2 and I'd love to keep this rom so I'm looking for something compatible. I've already tried flashing 4 other kernels and got stuck at boot and had to restore each time which is why I'm not just trying kernel after kernel on my own and looking for recommendations. I'm not really worried about much else in the kernel besides fixing the touch screen bug, overclocking over and governors like performance, smartassv2 and conservative.
Or if there's a script I can run to fix this that would be wayyyyy rad also.
All newer kernel includes the touchscreen fix. The bug is now a thing in the past

All newer kernels for the P500 you mean? He's using an Optimus V, though.

yup, and I haven't changed roms or kernels since flashing backside about a year ago since it worked so well, and who knows how long it had been since the kernel was messed with when I flashed it.

I can compile, or at least try to compile, a kernel for you to test. However, I will only have time for that on Monday or Tuesday. Do you mind waiting until then?

If you want the fixes to that kernel, then sure
Can you give me a link to his kernel? And what fixes did you want to see?
Looks like you want a CPU spike fix, axis inversion fix, and the governors you mentioned?

I linked the rom and kernel in the first post, they came together yeah I pretty much just want the multitouch to be better so I can actually play games that require me to touch the screen at two places at once haha
Thanks alot man I've been on the compatible kernel search for a couple weeks, dunno how many times I had to restore cause it gets stuck at the LG splash (I've even let it sit for over an hour just in case)
If there's anything you can throw in there to improve performance that would be rad but it's not too big of a deal, only game that really lags bad is GTA3

Didn't have much time, so I just attempted to fix the lag and the multi touch problem. As promised, the kernel is here:
http://code.google.com/p/sweetnsour-kernel/downloads/list
Look for VM670-version1-CFS. If I get the time, I can improve it some more, but for now, it is just going to be a fix for the two problems. As for the governors, the governors that you've mentioned are already included, unless you were talking about an upgrade for the governors.
Hopefully I compiled the right kernel, as bobzhome made different branches of the kernel. Please tell me how it goes
So I tried it and I can't tell anything is different :/

Sorry, now that I think about it, the touchscreen driver I put in that kernel is better suited for ICS. I'll have another kernel up with a different touchscreen driver tomorrow.
Uploaded a kernel with the same touchscreen driver, the reason being I don't believe I compiled the previous kernel with the touchscreen driver. I believe I just gave you the same kernel that you had before. Please try it now and tell me if anything has changed.

Unintentional though
Alrighty so I have been busy and haven't been able to tinker with my phone, but I decided to try it again today, cleared cache and dalvik and flashed it, booted up normal after usual amount of time after flashing. Once booted and as usual adw ex and everything else on link2sd wasn't there so I let it sit for like 20 min and rebooted, which usually gets adw ex and link2sd to be back up and goin smooth, but the phone never booted again. Got past all the usual boot stuff but just sat on a black screen (through the entire movie prometheus haha) so thank god I made a backup to restore cause I tried a battery pull a couple times. Sooooo I dunno what's up

I've been running this ROM for last 2 days now & not had any issues at all. Did you dirty flash or do a full wipe?
I had frequent SOD so I couldn't use as needed reboot quite often. Wouldn't wake from any long period of standby.....could be kernel related and linked to double tap to wake.....

I been using for quite pretty much a week or so, and have zero issues, it's doing great in every way.
And about camera? I've been using snapdragon camera, but photos are really pixelated and out of focus a lot of times, I tried several apps, but no success... Any ideas?

I've just been using the standard camera that comes with the ROM which to me seems to work ok, also the zte camera from the stock ROM works pretty good too!
I liked ZTE camera too, but is it available and working for this rom? I installed one version that didn't worked well, lots of FC

Thank you, I'm really not happy with
The camera quality right now, and before giving up I have to try several apps.

Here's my copy of ZTE Camera, http://www.mediafire.com/download/3gdhkc1pkdwdzw8/zte_camera.zip
Ok, already downloaded and tried, no luck... Still not satisfied, too much noise on the photos, but I think I know what the problem is... I also have a LG G4, and the photos are superb, and comparing both phones is not really fair, but I'm forced to compare... But thanks for the camera app, going to keep it.
I've just flashed the rom and working perfect... Thanx man..
2 days edit;
just an issue for this rom, I got a little bit heated back near the camera. when screen is locked, it's 39 Celcius. but while I was using Whatsapp and Facebook I checked it in CPU-Z and around 55 Celcius. Is it normal?
...yes, I been noticing that too, I think that the kernel does not have any thermal control enabled by default, just go to Kernel Adiutor and enable the thermal option, enable Core Control only. It's pretty much just a guess, but I think it may solve the overheat problem... By default it doesn't seem to have any thermal control enabled, you have to manually enable it . The best way is to ask the developer, Nutsda, I'm pretty much just trying to get there...
Thermal control should be enabled by default, if it isn't then enable it using kernel auditor & yes it does seem to be normal, I was reading a while back that it is a issue with the chipset our phones use & other phones using the same chipset, to run hotter than most phones, sitting between 50 & 60 degrees in use. The only real way to lower the temp is to drastically reduce performance
True, it's pretty much confirmed, have done some research and this chipset caused heating problems to several smartphones, it's not even about the phone brand, it's pretty much about the Snapdragon 615. In my phone it easily gets 65.C, but it's not big deal, if it fries up Vodafone will have to give me another one.
can do a port of rom miui 8 or rom pac?
