So-called vanilla ICS ROMs and mobile gaming - HTC Desire S

Hi,
After about 1 year of worshiping Sense I decided to jump ship and switch to 'vanilla' on my Desire S which was a really good decision. I love the feel and every single tweak you guys make to turn this ROM experience into something great. Thank you for that.
Right now I've been using:
[ROM] | 12 JULY 12 | IceColdSandwich Perfecto-Linaro Edition | ICS | CM9 Kernel
Quadrant score is 1899 (nothing more than 1300-1500 on my previous Sense ROMs), overall performance is fluid and I'm happy with it, but... I also happen to be somewhat more than a casual mobile gamer and that's when the drama begins.
This ROM crashed (auto-rebooted) only once for me (while using Instagram), but freezes happen a lot while gaming. I know it has a lot to do with kernel 3 source not being released etc.
My question is: will switching to:
[ROM][090712]Unofficial AOKP for Desire S [BETA][4.0.4][Milestone 6][Ext. CM9 Kernel
improve gaming experience in any way, or is it just not worth the hassle with changing the ROM?
Maybe some of you used both of these ROMs. If not, many of you are much more experienced in the topic than I am anyway, so I'd be really grateful if you could provide me with some input.
Once again thanks to all the devs for your hard, passionate work, and to all the rest that test it.

This is because Icecold and other ICS and JB ROM's are based on an old kernel with loads of workarounds.
It is known that it causes kernel oops(hang) under heavy graphics(3d) and webpage load.
Low graphics (2d) games like doodle jump work well.
Tapatalked from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3 sources. WAKE UP HTC!!!!!!

So, as I understand it, switching between these two ROMs (or, for example, CM9 alpha for DS) won't make any significant improvement, am I right? And what after HTC finally releases kernel 3.x sources (after OTA 4.0 update)? Is there a chance for really stable ICS ROMs in terms of gaming, camera working etc. on the Desire S?

Yes, switching to CM9 will not make a difference.
After kernel sources are released, it definitely will improve.
We already have JellyBean ROM's, guess if you like stock Google experience you should try JB ROM's in the future.
Who wants ICS when JellyBean is here
BTW camera works on all ICS ROM's

You can try reaper. It should be very stable. I never used it.
Sent from my Desire S using xda app-developers app

Reaper is the most stable Rom I've had in my phone, never had an issue with it, I'm quite a heavy gamer myself and have had a few fcs with ics Roms. Reaper is fast and reliable and I still go back to it during the week for work
Swyped from my desire s running blindIce

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I've gone through the Reaper ROM thread and it really looks promising. The thing is I don't know if I'll ever be able to come back to GB roms after my lick on the frosting of a particular 'ice cream sandwich'
For now I'm gonna stick to my actual choice and if it eventually drives me crazy while gaming/trying to play games, I guess I'll try Reaper.
Thanks once again!

never tried heavy games on my ice ds. well, I will soon, and follow up my report here.

I've used ICE_DS, it's as stable as a rock while gaming. Too bad I'm after stock ICS experience.
Sent from my Desire S using xda premium

I had no end of gaming issues with stock sense, inactive controls, freezing etc. Don't think I'll go back to sense regardless how much I liked it. Love vanilla.
Swyped from my desire s running Vanilla ICE v2.0

tried the CS Portable on ICE DS, working flawlessly. Also tried on aokp/cm9 , lot of freeze and fc. ah man. aokp/cm/aosp/vanilla/etc are cool, but hardware incompatible.. gonna wait for kernel 3 source thou.

Can't wait for kernel sources, will at least get some excellently stable Roms, hope lowveld makes a JB reaper

[Q] ROMS

Hey all I'm currently running Core Droid on my inspire 4G and was wondering which ROM is best to use? What does everybody prefer, and which is the most customizable.
Another question is can anyone port the Liquid Metal rom to this phone from the G2/Desire Z section?
Every ones going to say cm7 but it just personal Preference.

I've tried a few (including CM7), but kept going back to RCMix 5.9.x because it just works, it's fast, and it's very close to stock. A lot will also depend on if you want a 'vanilla' Android experience, or a build with HTC Sense.
If you think you're going to be experimenting with ROMs, I'd urge you to buy Titanium Backup pro. Well worth the money, it hasn't failed me yet.
I have used CoreDroid 5.4 and thought it was very stable currently i am running the inspired saga v1.1 and not only is it stable it is rocking fast and not even oc'd

There is no "best rom" and the rest of those questions are highly subjective.
I'm going to say CM7 because it's awesome and AOSP based, but right now I'm using Inspired Saga and it is pretty awesome.
CM7 Inspire 4G
I like them all. For different reasons. Currently using wuts in my Sig. Its nice and OC'd

i am using RCMix5.9 with 26.08.03.07M radio for a while,

I switch between Inspired Saga and cm7.
Most customizable? MIUI, by a long shot. Very slick, and very fast too.

I'm on my first ROM so I can't really say, but it does seem very subjective. Also, I'd think the launcher you use would make a difference as well.

My question is more towards if somebody can port that rom to this phone.. The first one was just a open thought.
Ignore the haters at least you posted in the right section.
As far as ROMs go I really enjoyed CoreDroid but yet I keep coming back to CM7. I just really love the AOSP/vanilla Android experience.
Also whoever mentioned Titanium Backup Pro earlier was spot on it is a MUST have if you flash to different ROMs a lot!

I might go to CM7.. I just really hope somebody can port Liquid Villian.
/obligatory "it's a matter of preference" statement./
Personally, I used CM7 for the first month that I had the phone, then I found Ultimate Droid and have been running that since. It has some known bugs (camera FC when you try to apply a color filter) but overall, it's probably the quickest and smoothest rom I've flashed. Then again, I don't care for the Sense UI; so take my opinion for what it's worth.

The best stock roms for the inspire are:
1. ClearD
2. TPC
3. the one in my sig

ClearDroid looks pretty nice. Almost finished downloading TPC's rom, gonna start that up soon as I backup everything.
Do all those roms allow installation of non-market apps? Sideloading seems a bit cumbersome.

if the question is "the most stable" the answer could be the stock rom... but if you want the fastest or the most smooth or the best themed, then answer could be Miui, SuperAosp or Cyanogen ( in my opinion, of course...)
The man asked for a stable ROM, not lol ones like MIUI which brings a new bug every week and not CM7 nightlies which are rebooting once at 2 hours.

Exactly what I was going to say nearly word for word.
And yes, this is in the wrong section OP
Based on my limited experience, I don't feel the AOSP-based ROMs and kernels are as stable as stock--those random reboots keep happening on my Tmo NS no matter what I do.
The only other ROM that didn't make my fingernails sore from doing battery pulls is MoDaCo, but it hasn't been updated since March.

Have you tried the ones I mentioned? Oxygen or infinity? They are stock ROMs with extra features. I am using oxygen since 3 days and I haven't had a single reboot so far, even overclocked at 1.4GHz and using proton's suggested voltages. Adam's oxygen ROM is the definition of stability my friend.

MIUI is a wonderful ROM. It has a unique UI and is like a breath of fresh air. It is also rock stable. It does have a slight (very slight) lag for me compared to Oxygen or Infin1ty or SuperCM7. That little issue combined with the fact that in the texting app when you enter a name you just get a list of numbers without differentiating Home from Work from Mobile makes it just a tiny bit short of ready for me to use as a daily.
I'll place a vote for Oxygen; haven't flashed anything else since I installed it a few days back. No reboots or problems of any sort, using Netarchy 1.3.5 bfs universal.

Preferred ICS ROM and why

I just updated my firmware and installed my first ICS ROM, i'm interested to know others opinions on why you chose the ROM you did and why you are still running it. Please share. Thanks
Trips CM9. It's proven to be quite stable in my use, good battery life, everything works smoothly. I'm perfectly happy with it.
..everything except camera recording, bluetooth and whatnot.. Alpha quality.
OpenSensation (or something..) because I hate trip, Vquattro stopped and sense sucks.
was using trips cm9 really liked it, fast and stable but just couldn't get mms working so i've gone to insertcoin with shinzlons aosp theme
ARHD 6.2.1 + Rom Cleaner + Shnizlon AOSP Theme. Stable, reasonably fast, good looking. But I'm keeping an eye om the OpenSensation dev thread

None of us have showed hatred towards him. Calm your tits.
I'm using ARHD 6.2.1 but am only using this because it seemed to be the most stable with the features I wanted. However, I am seriously considering VI.
I'd love to install a fully stable CM9, though.
Legends Blitz 5 (nosense) or VI 3.0...because they rock...try a few! Happy Flashing!!
I used almost every ICS rom,and i am now on ARHD 6.2.1,virtuos inquisition is really great rom but after some time it become so laggy,i dont have that kind of problem with sense roms and they look pretty.
When trip solve bluetooth and camera recording i will flash cm9,until then im stuck with these one
Honestly can't go past the Elegancia Rom...IMV I think it is superior to anything I have used before - by a long shot.
I've been on baadnewz's InsertCoin 4.5.4 for the last couple of days and I love it. It was as though the ROM search had done a full circle. The big ass sense flip clock on the home screen of the stock ROM was probably the catalyst that triggered it all. "Dang, could this be the reason for my battery drain?" And so it began, the quest for the perfect Rom. The de-sensed versions were all tried out. They were stable - most of them - but they didn't show incoming calls on the lockscreen. They looked washed out on the sensation screen; maybe it's just me, but AOSP did seem " blurry" on the sensation.
Finally, sense prevailed. I put InsertCoin on, and sure enough, the big ass flip clock appeared bang in the middle of the homescreen. The battery life wasn't that pleasing either. But then, baadnewz had mentioned in his thread to be patient for a couple of charge cycles. Sure enough, today I've not charged my phone, and it's been cruising for the last 8 hours with 30% battery remaining. I've a hunch it'll get better.
I got the sense 4 golden wallpaper, and it looks beautiful.
And the big ass flip clock? Well, I replaced it with the smaller flip clock that has the weather to the right of it.
God bless the ROM developers that are working to make the Sensation a better user experience.

P.S.: The Sense 3.6 email client has the same deficiencies that Sense 3 had. It doesn't support push mail from corporate servers, and the inbox gets only plain text email. The Cyanogenmod email client can be installed, and it is a joy to hear the "clink" when email comes through, and to see them formatted the way they were sent. Baadnewz and the others - are you listening? This could/should be baked into future ROM releases.

what i like with ics insertcoin rom is that it is really fast, compared of course from the other roms i tried before. the smoothness really impressed me from the start and that up to now it still have not received any reboots or even htc fc's, granted i have only been using it for 2 days but i'm just really happy about it. i have really no issue with the battery since its always plugged in usb even when at home.

Your post suggests everything works. Guy steps in and points out that not everything works and you attack him. I see no troll like qualities in his post. Any ROM with non functioning hardware is alpha quality and this is no insult to the dev just a fact. Peace.
I'm enjoying insert coin ROM 4.5.0, along with the leedroid tweaks lite mod. No reason other than it works and baad is quite an active dev. Gonna update version soon but baad releases so often I can't be bothered flashing new ROM for relatively small changes every second day. Every couple of weeks will do me.

I've been running R4INS AOKP JB builds for a while and they're stable for the most part. Something to keep in mind about Jelly Bean vs ICS is that ICS has been officially released for the SR, JB has not, therefore JB will never be 100% stable IMO. My advice: give AOKP a shot for a day or two, or even CM10, and see if what YOU need to work works.
R4INS AOKP build can be found here: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/34092-aokp-unofficial-galaxy-s-ii-skyrocket-i727-oct-2-jb-build-4/
The roms are STABLE, but they're still works in progress. You need more patience with the JB Roms because they're working off of more generic code that needs to be customized to work with the Skyrocket. The ICS Roms are specific to the Skyrocket (with a few exceptions) so they are much more refined. I tried a few JB roms because my wife has a Galaxy Nexus and I love how smooth it is, but I keep going back to ICS roms because at the moment they are more refined. If you require more stable roms than what is out there then just wait. The Skyrocket is slated to get a JB update, and once it does and the talented developers here get their hands on it, it'll be worth the wait.

I've found the unofficial liquid smooth RC's to be quite stable, besides the occasional screen flicker. RC3 is the latest and I've only been running it for a day, so I cant vouch for it yet, but the screen flicker seems to have been reduced.
Since several people seem interested in turning this into a "best ROM" thread, I'll just drop this on you, OP:
There is NO stable JB ROM for the Skyrocket, period. Many of the JB ROMs out there are close, some very close, but none of them are 100% stable at this point, and none will be until we get an official leak.
There is no stable ROM for JB, you can't make it happen without official source code. Also, as long as people are tinkering, it won't be stable.

Battery life, etc
Yeah I would agree with everyone here, there is no stable ROM, I was running paranoid for a week or so, it ran good but I found myself plugging in my phone all the time. Following the threads closely you will see everyone has different problems with each ROM. Some more then others. I found it stable enough for daily use but as a developer I am probably more tolerable to quirks than most.
i found that the poor battery life seems to be due to the phone never entering deep sleep mode, which is somehow triggered when charging your phone. if i reboot my phone after recharging it, the battery lasts nearly as long as on ICS.
use CPU spy to check if your phone is entering deepsleep mode.
Cm10 just release their nightlies build the other day. I'm running it now without anything wrong. Just sluggish at time and the screen off animation works when it wants to but other than that its solid. Give it a shot

is there such a thing out for the ATT skyrocket yet? On CM 9 stable right now and I am depending on my phone for daily use and task but its killing me that I'm not on the jellybean train yet. Is there a stable jellybean ROM out there yet? or at least close to it which I could use daily for now? Thank you.

I've found the last build of Sky JellyBean to be as stable and fast as Sky-ICS.

Project butter
Are any of the JB roms out there for the skyrocket... uh... doing project butter? Have it implemented? I'm most curious about that feature.
A quick google search failed to get me anything relevant to my question.

Any ROM in the development section that has 4.1.1, JB, CM10, AOKP JB... actually I see like 6-8 different ROMs that are compiled from a JB source, one of the main features of jelly bean is project butter and its just giving the UI a fast transition and if you played with CM10/AOKP JB for a few days then go back to CM9 you will notice the speed difference. Project butter just makes everything snappier and quick to response which is most likely in every JB rom.
T-1000
i use sky T-1000 as my daily driver. i keep a nandroid of sky-ICS by the same dev. Sean is hella talented.
here's a link to sky ICS

[Q] Rooting girlfriends SGS3 best rom?

What is the best Touch Wiz rom that i won't need to update all the time that will be bug free and good on battery?
Same with ASOP. i wanna let my girlfriend decide if she wants to flash a touchwiz or asop rom.
Also whats the difference between the Original Android development and Android development. I'm usually in the MyTouch 4G section and we don't have a thread like that.
original is AOSP roms.
there hasnt been a VZW jellybean leak so for stability and battery life you should flash a touchwiz rom like synergy.
everyone will recommend different AOSP roms. youd have to flash a few to decide on one.
heres a good place to start.

FWIW im running AOKP build 5. the AOSP roms are stable, but have quirks and bugs.
I've had very good luck with CleanRom. I often see that or Synergy recommended for stock Touchwiz-based roms. I tried a couple CM10/JellyBean roms a while ago, but they each had some issues. It should be better now, but since there's no official JB release, it may not be perfect.
alright thanks guy i think ill go with Synergy, seeing as there isnt one stable ASOP or AKOP rom, thanks guys
I have CleanROM on mine, fantastic rom with solid battery life.

No issues at all, lag free. I haven't seen any lag.
I was suggest synergy 73 was the most stable ics
Incubus jellybomb ics I,m hearing awesome news on this one
Cleanrom and Beans16 are suppose to be stable, I have been off ics since the ported jb roms.
For new in loving Jellywiz rsl10 hybrid and loving this Rom. Funny thing is seems like everyone's phone is allure different and sometimes you just have to perform a backup and take the roms for a drive to see what works the best on your S3.

Beans is pretty popular as well, that's the one I've been sticking with the most. Seems to be mixed reviews on each release though with a few people experiences bugs while the majority hasn't had any.
Quick GPS, everything working properly, smooth, fast, and good on battery. Plus tons of customizations.

No issues at all either. I'm using CleanRom2.5 but with Nova launcher. FWIW, I can often go over 24hrs on a single charge too.
